Abstract:Photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE) with high efficiency and controllable transmission is widely pursued. In the paper, we designed a dielectric metasurface that could yield spin splitting effect with energy transfer efficiency up to 84%. Switching the output photonic spin states is realized by controlling the polarization azimuthal angle of the incident light. Introducing a background phase gradient, we also propose a high-efficiency asymmetric PSHE metasurface that could give rise to arbitrary transmission angles for the left and right circularly-polarized light. These results are numerically validated, which are of the significance in guiding the design of high-performance photonic spin manipulation devices. (C) 2017 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

Abstract:An EIT (electromagnetically induced transparency)-based prism coupler is suggested for realizing tunable re∞ection spectrum via quantum coherence of phases in a multilevel system, where destructive and constructive quantum interference will occur among multilevel transition pathways that are driven by two external control flelds. In this prism coupler, a semiconductor-quantum-dot (SQD) medium layer, which can exhibit EIT and relevant quantum coherent efiects, bounds the prism base, and the two external control flelds are used to manipulate the probe fleld and the excited surface plasmon wave (on the SQD layer surface). Then the surface plasmon wave modes, which are generated by the probe fleld incident into this multilevel SQD medium layer, can be coherently tunable through the switchable quantum interference (destructive and constructive quantum interference) among the energy levels in the SQD systems. Such switchable quantum interference can be realized if we tune the intensities (i.e., adjust a proper intensity ratio) of the two control flelds that drive the SQD multilevel EIT system. New switchable photonic devices, which could flnd applications in photonic microcircuits as well as some areas in integrated optical circuits, could be designed based on this quantum-interference switchable surface plasmon resonance.

Abstract:High-index dielectric nanoparticles supporting a distinct series of Mie resonances have enabled a new class of optical antennas with unprecedented functionalities. The great wealth of multipolar responses has not only brought in new physical insight but also spurred practical applications. However, how to make such a colorful resonance palette actively tunable is still elusive. Here, we demonstrate that the structured phase-change alloy Ge 2 Sb 2 Te 5 (GST) can support a diverse set of multipolar Mie resonances with active tunability. By harnessing the dramatic optical contrast of GST, we realize broadband (Δ λ / λ ~ 15%) mode shifting between an electric dipole resonance and an anapole state. Active control of higher-order anapoles and multimodal tuning are also investigated, which make the structured GST serve as a multispectral optical switch with high extinction contrasts (>6 dB). With all these findings, our study provides a new direction for realizing active nanophotonic devices.

Abstract:We present the design methodology of a light reconfigurable geometric phase optical element with multi-stable diffraction efficiency states, enabled by a photoresponsive self-organized chiral liquid crystal. Experimental demonstration shows the device exhibits a broad diffraction efficiency tunable range that can be smoothly modulated under alternate stimulation of ultraviolet and green lights. Distinctive to previous designs, the regulation of diffraction efficiency fundamentally stems from the modulation of geometric phase together with dynamical phase retardation, and any intermediate diffractive state is memorized. Such multi-stability facilitates applications including energy-saving all-optical signal processing in classical and quantum level, and phase hologram for anti-counterfeit.

Abstract:Using a photoalignment technique with a sulphonic azo-dye as the surfactant aligning material, we fabricated electrically tunable liquid crystal q-plates with topological charge 0.5, 1.5 and 3 for generating optical vortex beams with definite orbital angular momentum (OAM) 1,3 and 6 per photon (in units of ¯h), respectively. We carried out several tests on our q-plates, including OAM tomography, finding excellent performances. These devices can have useful applications in general and quantum optics.

The great wealth of multipolar responses and their delicate interplay have not only spurred practical developments but also brought new insight into fundamental physics such as the recent observation of nonradiating anapole states in the optical regime. However, how to make such a colorful resonance palette actively tunable and even switchable among different elemental multipoles is still elusive. Here, for the first time, we demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally that a structured phase-change alloy Ge$_2$Sb$_2$Te$_5$ (GST) can support a diverse set of multipolar Mie resonances with active tunability and switchability. By harnessing the dramatic optical contrast ({Delta}n u003e 2) and the intermediate phases of the GST material, we realize continuous switching between a scattering bright state (electric dipole mode) and a dark state (anapole mode) in a broadband range ({Delta}{lambda} u003e 600 nm). Dynamic control of higher-order anapoles and resulting multimodal switching effects are also systematically investigated, which naturally make the structured GST serve as a multispectral optical switch with high extinction contrasts (u003e 6 dB) and multi-level control capabilities. With all these findings, our study provides an entirely new design principle for realizing active nanophotonic devices.

Abstract:This paper reports tunable integrated photonic devices in the visible and near-infrared (NIR) regions using a phase change material, Germanium Telluride (GeTe), within sub-wavelength layered optical cavity structures. GeTe exhibits two distinct index of refraction values at its amorphous and crystalline states in this spectral range. Utilizing this property, we demonstrate a multi-color filter working in visible range (400 nm-750 nm), achieving four colors through novel optical and thermal engineering of a thin film stack that includes two GeTe layers with only a single integrated joule heater element. Specifically, ultra-thin GeTe films were sandwiched between a bottom metallic mirror and a top high-index dielectric (titanium dioxide). It is shown that the crystallization temperature (Tx) of GeTe is dependent on the film thickness when less than ~20 nm. The refractive index of GeTe only changes significantly in the NIR region when it undergoes phase transitions when heated. To enhance the color contrast, a 250-nm thick silicon dioxide layer is placed under GeTe to create an optical cavity between GeTe and a bottom metal reflector. Using this optimized design, the tunable color filter shows four distinct colors using the integrated heater. In addition to a color filter, we demonstrate an electrically tunable multi-mode optical shutter in near infrared range of 1.1 m and 800 nm with more than 20 dB modulation depth. The low static power consumption of these devices achieved through reliable memory-base phase transitioning of GeTe makes them prime candidates for a number of portable consumer electronic applications.

Abstract:Optical beam shaping plays a key role in optics and photonics. In this work, meta-q-plate featured by arbitrarily space-variant optical axes is proposed and demonstrated via liquid crystal photoalignment based on a polarization-sensitive alignment agent and a dynamic micro-lithography system. Meta-q-plates with multiple-, azimuthally/radially variant topological charges and initial azimuthal angles are fabricated. Accordingly, complex beams with elliptical, asymmetrical, multi-ringed and hurricane transverse profiles are generated, making the manipulation of optical vortex up to an unprecedented flexibility. The evolution, handedness and Michelson interferogram of the hurricane one are theoretically analysed and experimentally verified. The design facilitates the manipulation of polarization and spatial degrees of freedom of light in a point-to-point manner. The realization of meta-q-plate drastically enhances the capability of beam shaping and may pave a bright way towards optical manipulations, OAM based informatics, quantum optics and other fields.

Abstract:Spin-to-orbital-angular-momentum conversion has attracted considerable interest as a tool to create exotic light beams, leading to the emergence of novel devices that implement this function. These converters exploit the geometrical phase to create helical beams of handedness determined by the chirality of the incident light. This property is finding important applications in quantum optics thanks to the demonstration of liquid crystal spin-to-orbital angular momentum converters (SOC) known as q-plates. Here we demonstrate high-efficiency SOCs in the visible based on dielectric metasurfaces that generate vortex beams with high and even fractional topological charge and show for the first time the simultaneous generation of collinear helical beams with different and arbitrary orbital angular momentum. We foresee that this versatile method of creating vortex beams, which circumvents the limitations of q-plates, will significant impact microscopy and vector beam shaping.

Abstract:The spin Hall effect of light, associated with spin-orbit interactions, describes a transport phenomenon with optical spin-dependent splitting, leading to a plethora of applications such as sensing, imaging, and spin-controlled nanophotonics. Although geometric meatsurfaces can mimic photonic spin Hall effect by spatially splitting left-hand circularly polarized and righthand circularly polarized states of electromagnetic waves with anomalous refraction or reflection angles, the geometric phase generated by metasurfaces hinders metalenses to realize simultaneous focusing of different spin states, limiting further applications. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an approach to realizing a spin Hall metalens that can focus terahertz waves with different spin states and flexibly manipulate spindependent focal points in multiple spatial dimensions based on a pure geometric phase. A dielectric metasurface consisting of micropillars with identical shape and different in-plane orientations is designed to realize the multidimensional manipulation of photonics spin Hall effect in terahertz region. Furthermore, helicity-dependent imaging is demonstrated by the terahertz spin Hall metalens. The uniqueness and robust approach for manipulating spin photons may have a significant impact on designing ultra-compact and multifunctional devices and spin photonics devices.

By arranging the orientations of anisotropic nano-antennas, the geometric phase-based metasurfaces can convert the incident spin light to its orthogonal state, and enable flexible wavefront engineering together with the function of a half-wave plate. Here, by incorporating the propagation phase, we realize another important optical device of quarter-wave plate together with the wavefront engineering as well, which is implemented by controlling both the cross- and co-polarized light simultaneously with a singlet metasurface. Highly efficient conversion of the spin light to a variety of linearly polarized light are obtained for meta-holograms, metalens focusing and imaging in blue light region. Our work provides a new strategy for efficient metasurfaces with both phase and polarization control, and enriches the functionalities of metasurface devices for wider application scenarios.
Dielectric geometric phase optical elements from femtosecond direct laser writing

Abstract:We propose to use femtosecond direct laser writing technique to realize dielectric optical elements from photo-resist materials for the generation of structured light from purely geometrical phase transformations. This is illustrated by the fabrication and characterization of spin-to-orbital optical angular momentum couplers generating optical vortices of topological charge from 1 to 20. In addition, the technique is scalable and allows obtaining microscopic to macroscopic flat optics. These results thus demonstrate that direct 3D photopolymerization technology qualifies for the realization of spin-controlled geometric phase optical elements.

Abstract:Vortex beams are a type of structured light characterized by phase rotation around the propagation axis, resulting in orbital angular momentum. Their properties make them useful in various applications such as high-resolution microscopy, optical tweezing, and telecommunications. This has led to a comprehensive development of methods for their generation, ranging from using single-purpose glass elements to utilizing computer-generated holograms using spatial light modulators. One of the most commonly used elements for vortex transformation is a vortex half-wave retarder called a q-plate, which can transform a Gaussian beam into a scalar vortex or vector beam depending on the input polarization. Although the commercially available ones are limited in the range of possible output topological charges, they can be stacked to perform arithmetic operations to expand them. However, changing the output or working wavelength requires rearranging the elements. We present an improvement to this method that solves these problems by introducing Q-modules, easy-to-fabricate, electrically tunable liquid crystal devices that combine the features of q-plates and half-wave plates and can be used as building blocks in modular assemblies. Electrical tuning makes it possible to change the working wavelength as well as the topological output charge or polarization order without the need to interact mechanically with the setup.

Abstract:Reciprocal spin-orbit coupling (SOC) via geometric phase with flat optics provides a promising platform for shaping and controlling paraxial structured light. Current devices, from the pioneering q-plates to the recent J-plates, provide only spin-dependent wavefront modulation without amplitude control. However, achieving control over all the spatial dimensions of paraxial SOC states requires spin-dependent control of corresponding complex amplitude, which remains challenging for flat optics. Here, to address this issue, we present a new type of flat-optics elements termed structured geometric phase gratings that is capable of conjugated complex-amplitude control for orthogonal input circular polarizations. By using a microstructured liquid crystal photoalignment technique, we engineered a series of flat-optics elements and experimentally showed their excellent precision in arbitrary SOC control. This principle unlocks the full-field control of paraxial structured light via flat optics, providing a promising way to develop an information exchange and processing units for general photonic SOC states, as well as extra-/intracavity mode convertors for high-precision laser beam shaping.

Abstract:Dielectric metasurfaces have made great progress over the past decade to enhance light-matter interaction. Recently, dielectric nanohole structures have been employed for the creation of dielectric metasurfaces. However, the optical characteristics of most dielectric nanohole structures remain fixed once they are manufactured. This study investigates the optical properties of Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) film perforated with a periodic dual nanohole array. The GST dual nanohole array is capable of supporting multiple guided resonances and bound states in the continuum (BICs). By introducing asymmetry in the radius, BICs can be transformed into quasi-BICs with high-Q resonances. The wavelengths of guided resonances and quasi-BICs can be dynamically controlled through the phase transition of GST. Furthermore, modifying the gap allows for the achievement of active high-Q electromagnetically induced transparency, resulting from the interaction between one guided resonance and one quasi-BIC mode. The GST asymmetric nanohole array holds potential for applications in optical modulators, slow-light devices, and nonlinear optical devices.

Abstract:Photonic components with adjustable parameters, such as variable-focal-length lenses or spectral filters, which can change functionality upon optical stimulation, could offer numerous useful applications. Tuning of such components is conventionally achieved by either micro- or nanomechanical actuation of their constituent parts, by stretching or by heating. Here, we report a novel approach for making reconfigurable optical components that are created with light in a non-volatile and reversible fashion. Such components are written, erased and rewritten as two-dimensional binary or greyscale patterns into a nanoscale film of phase-change material by inducing a refractive-index-changing phase transition with tailored trains of femtosecond pulses. We combine germanium–antimony–tellurium-based films with a diffraction-limited resolution optical writing process to demonstrate a variety of devices: visible-range reconfigurable bichromatic and multi-focus Fresnel zone plates, a super-oscillatory lens with subwavelength focus, a greyscale hologram, and a dielectric metamaterial with on-demand reflection and transmission resonances.

Abstract:We report on the observation of optical spin-controlled modes from a quasicrystalline metasurface as a result of an aperiodic geometric phase induced by anisotropic subwavelength structure. When geometric phase defects are introduced in the aperiodic structured surface, the modes exhibit polarization helicity dependence resulting in the optical spin-Hall effect. The radiative thermal dispersion bands from a quasicrystal structure were studied where the observed bands arise from the optical spin-orbit interaction induced by the aperiodic space-variant orientations of anisotropic antennas. The optical spin-flip behavior of the revealed modes that arise from the geometric phase pickup was experimentally observed within the visible spectrum by measuring the spin-projected diffraction patterns. The introduced ability to manipulate the light-matter interaction of quasicrystals in a spin-dependent manner provides the route for molding light via spin-optical aperiodic artificial planar surfaces.

Abstract:Geometric phases have attracted considerable attention in recent years, due to their capability of arbitrary beam shaping in a most efficient and compact way, while traditional geometric phases are usually limited to handling single-structured beams and lack the capability of parallel manipulation. Here, we propose a digitalized geometric phase enabling parallel optical spin and orbital angular momentum encoding. The concept is demonstrated in inhomogeneous anisotropic media by imprinting a particularly designed binary phase into a space-variant geometric phase. We theoretically analyze its spin orbit interaction of light and experimentally created higher-order Poincare sphere beam lattices, the order number and symmetry of which can be flexibly manipulated. Special lattices of cylindrical vector beams and orbital angular momentum modes with square and hexagonal symmetry are presented. This work discloses a new insight in programming geometric phases for tailoring the optical field and inspires various photonics applications.
