Abstract:
The accurate prediction of ship trajectory has great significance in maritime transportation. Among all the prediction methods, multi-step prediction has received increasing attention because it can predict both time and position information in the future period. However, the existing methods are either complex or have low prediction accuracy. In order to overcome the limitations, a physical hypothesis is introduced to balance the complexity and the accuracy. The cubic spline interpolation and historical trajectories are used to realize it. The advantages of TPNet and LSTM are combined in the proposed method and four parts are involved: the AIS data preprocessing method, the solutions of destination point and support point, and the uncertainty analysis. The proposed method is not only easy to implement and suitable for real-time analysis, but also has a high prediction accuracy. The case study on a ferry ship in the Jiangsu section of the Yangtze River indicates the validity of the method.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily focuses on addressing the issue of ship trajectory prediction, particularly in the context of maritime transportation. Specifically, the research aims to develop a method capable of accurately predicting the future positions and time information of ships, which is of great significance for maritime traffic safety, risk assessment, and collision avoidance. To overcome the limitations of existing methods (high complexity or low prediction accuracy), the paper proposes a new method called MP-LSTM (Multi-step Prediction LSTM). This method combines the advantages of the Trajectory Prediction Network (TPNet) and Long Short-Term Memory Network (LSTM), and introduces physical assumptions to balance the complexity and accuracy of the prediction model. The key components of the MP-LSTM method include: 1. **AIS Data Preprocessing**: Utilizing cubic spline interpolation and median filtering to address measurement errors and inconsistent time intervals in Automatic Identification System (AIS) data. 2. **Determination of Destination Nodes**: Generating reference trajectories based on historical data and using these trajectories to estimate the predicted endpoint location. 3. **Determination of Support Points**: Using the LSTM model to predict support points, i.e., key turning points on the predicted path, which helps refine the path prediction. 4. **Uncertainty Analysis**: Conducting a quantitative analysis of the uncertainty in the prediction results to improve the reliability of the predictions. This method is not only easy to implement and suitable for real-time analysis but also has high prediction accuracy. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated through a case study of a ferry on the Jiangsu section of the Yangtze River.
