Abstract:By measuring the fundamental constants in astrophysical objects one can test basic physical principles as space-time invariance of physical laws along with probing the applicability limits of the standard model of particle physics. The latest constraints on the fine structure constant alpha and the electron-to-proton mass ratio mu obtained from observations at high redshifts and in the Milky Way disk are reviewed. In optical range, the most accurate measurements have already reached the sensitivity limit of available instruments, and further improvements will be possible only with next generation of telescopes and receivers. New methods of the wavelength calibration should be realized to control systematic errors at the sub-pixel level. In radio sector, the main tasks are the search for galactic and extragalactic objects suitable for precise molecular spectroscopy as well as high resolution laboratory measurements of molecular lines to provide accurate frequency standards. The expected progress in the optical and radio astrophysical observations is quantified.

Abstract:We review recent activity searching for variations in the fundamental constants of nature in quasar absorption spectra and in the laboratory. While research in this direction has been ongoing for many decades, the topic has recently been stimulated by astronomical evidence for spatial variation in the fine-structure constant, alpha. This result could be confirmed using different quasar data and atomic clock measurements, but there are significant challenges to obtain the required accuracy. We review existing measurements and discuss some of the most promising systems where any variations would be strongly enhanced.

Abstract:Review of recent works devoted to the temporal and spatial variation of the fundamental constants and dependence of the fundamental constants on the gravitational potential (violation of local position invariance) is presented. We discuss the variation of the fine structure constant $\alpha=e^2/\hbar c$, strong interaction and fundamental masses (Higgs vacuum), e.g. the electron-to-proton mass ratio $\mu=m_e/M_p$ or $X_e=m_e/\Lambda_{QCD}$ and $X_q=m_q/\Lambda_{QCD}$. We also present new results from Big Bang nucleosynthesis and Oklo natural nuclear reactor data and propose new measurements of enhanced effects in atoms, nuclei and molecules, both in quasar and laboratory spectra.

Abstract:Review of recent works devoted to the variation of the fundamental constants is presented including atomic clocks, quasar absorption spectra, and Oklo natural nuclear reactor data. Assuming linear variation with time we can compare different results. From the quasar absorption spectra: $\dot{\mu}/\mu=(1 \pm 3) \times 10^{-16}$ yr$^{-1}$. A combination of this result and the atomic clock results gives the best limt on variation of $\alpha$: $\dot{\alpha}/\alpha=(-0.8 \pm 0.8) \times 10^{-16}$ yr$^{-1}$. The Oklo natural reactor gives the best limit on the variation of $m_s/\Lambda_{QCD}$ where $m_s$ is the strange quark mass. Huge enhancement of the relative variation effects happens in transitions between close atomic, molecular and nuclear energy levels. We suggest several new cases where the levels are very narrow. Large enhancement of the variation effects is also possible in cold atomic and molecular collisions near Feshbach resonance. Massive bodies (stars or galaxies) can also affect physical constants. They have large scalar charge $S$ proportional to number of particles which produces a Coulomb-like scalar field $U=S/r$. This leads to a variation of the fundamental constants proportional to the gravitational potential, e.g. $\delta \alpha/ \alpha = k_\alpha \delta (GM/ r c^2)$. We compare different manifestations of this <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://effect.The" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> strongest limit $k_\alpha +0.17 k_e= (-3.5\pm 6) \times 10^{-7}$.

Abstract:Theories unifying gravity and other interactions suggest the possibility of spatial and temporal variation of physical ``constants'' in the Universe. Detection of high-redshift absorption systems intersecting the sight lines towards distant quasars provide a powerful tool for measuring these variations. We have previously demonstrated that high sensitivity to the variation of the fine structure constant $\alpha$ can be obtained by comparing spectra of heavy and light atoms (or molecules). Here we describe new calculations for a range of atoms and ions, most of which are commonly detected in quasar spectra: Fe II, Mg II, Mg I, C II, C IV, N~V, O I, Al III, Si II, Si IV, Ca I, Ca II, Cr II, Mn II, Zn II, Ge II (see the results in Table 3). The combination of Fe II and Mg II, for which accurate laboratory frequencies exist, have already been used to constrain $\alpha$ variations. To use other atoms and ions, accurate laboratory values of frequencies of the strong E1-transitions from the ground states are required. We wish to draw the attention of atomic experimentalists to this important problem. We also discuss a mechanism which can lead to a greatly enhanced sensitivity for placing constraints on variation on fundamental constants. Calculations have been performed for Hg II, Yb II, Ca I and Sr II where there are optical transitions with the very small natural widths, and for hyperfine transition in Cs I and Hg II.

Abstract: The possibility of variations of the values of fundamental constants is a phenomenon predicted by a number of scenarios beyond General Relativity. This can happen if ``our'' fundamental constants are not the actual constants of the fundamental theory and their value is instead determined, for example, by the background value of some new field or the size of extra dimensions. So far, most studies have been devoted to constrain possible temporal variations of the electromagnetic fine structure constant $\alpha$, the proton to electron mass ratio $\mu = m_p/m_e$, and the gravitational constant $G_{\rm N}$. Apart some claims of the detection of a temporal or spatial variation of $\alpha$ and $\mu$, so far there is no clear observational evidence of any variation of our fundamental constants.

Abstract:The recently demonstrated methods for cooling and trapping diatomic molecules offer new possibilities for precision searches in fundamental physical theories. Here, we propose to study the variations of the fine-structure constant (α=e 2 /ħc) and the proton-to-electron mass ratio (μ = m p /m e ) with time - by taking advantage of the nearly degenerate rovibrational levels in the electronic states of the magnesium fluoride (MgF) molecule. Specifically, due to the cancellation between the fine structure splitting and the rovibrational intervals in the different MgF natural isotopes, a degeneracy occurs for the A 2 Π (3/2) (v'=0,J'=18.5,-) and the A 2 Π (1/2) (v''=0,J''=20.5,-). We find that using the nearly degenerate energy level of such states can be 104 times more sensitive than using a pure rotational transition to measure the variations of α and μ. To quantify the small gap between the A 2 Π( 3/2) (v'=0,J'=18.5,-) and the A 2 Π( 1/2) (v''=0,J''=20.5,-), the special transitions of choice are feasible: the X 2 Σ (1/2) + (v=0,J=19.5,+) to the A 2 Π (3/2) (v'=0,J'=18.5,-) and the X 2 Σ (1/2) + (v=0,J=19.5,+) to the A 2 Π (1/2) (v''=0,J''=20.5,-). In addition, we estimate the frequency uncertainties caused by the narrow linewidth, Zeeman shift, the Stark shift, Doppler boarding and the Blackbody radiation.

Abstract:The remarkable detection of a spatial variation in the fine-structure constant, alpha, from quasar absorption systems must be independently confirmed by complementary searches. In this letter, we discuss how terrestrial measurements of time-variation of the fundamental constants in the laboratory, meteorite data, and analysis of the Oklo nuclear reactor can be used to corroborate the spatial variation seen by astronomers. Furthermore, we show that spatial variation of the fundamental constants may be observable as spatial anisotropy in the cosmic microwave background, the accelerated expansion (dark energy), and large-scale structure of the Universe.

Varying fundamental constants meet Hubble

Abstract:Fundamental physical constants need not be constant, neither spatially nor temporally. -- This seeming simple statement has profound implications for a wide range of physical processes and interactions, and can be probed through a number of observations. In this chapter, we highlight how CMB measurements can constrain variations of the fine-structure constant and the electron rest mass during the cosmological recombination era. The sensitivity of the CMB anisotropies to these constants arises because they directly affect the cosmic ionization history and Thomson scattering rate, with a number of subtle atomic physics effects coming together. Recent studies have revealed that variations of the electron rest mass can indeed alleviate the Hubble tension, as we explain here. Future opportunities through measurements of the cosmological recombination radiation are briefly mentioned, highlighting how these could provide an exciting avenue towards uncovering the physical origin of the Hubble tension experimentally.

Abstract:Fundamental constants are a cornerstone of our physical laws. Any constant varying in space and/or time would reflect the existence of an almost massless field that couples to matter. This will induce a violation of the universality of free fall. It is thus of utmost importance for our understanding of gravity and of the domain of validity of general relativity to test for their constancy. We thus detail the relations between the constants, the tests of the local position invariance and of the universality of free fall. We then review the main experimental and observational constraints that have been obtained from atomic clocks, the Oklo phenomenon, Solar system observations, meteorites dating, quasar absorption spectra, stellar physics, pulsar timing, the cosmic microwave background and big bang nucleosynthesis. At each step we describe the basics of each system, its dependence with respect to the constants, the known systematic effects and the most recent constraints that have been obtained. We then describe the main theoretical frameworks in which the low-energy constants may actually be varying and we focus on the unification mechanisms and the relations between the variation of different constants. To finish, we discuss the more speculative possibility of understanding their numerical values and the apparent fine-tuning that they confront us with.

Searching for new physics using high precision absorption spectroscopy; continuum placement uncertainties and the fine structure constant in strong gravity

Abstract:Searches for variations of fundamental constants require a comprehensive understanding of measurement errors. This paper examines a source of error that is usually overlooked: the impact of continuum placement error. We investigate the problem using a high resolution, high signal to noise spectrum of the white dwarf G191$-$B2B. Narrow photospheric absorption lines allow us to search for new physics in the presence of a gravitational field approximately $10^4$ times that on Earth. Modelling photospheric lines requires knowing the underlying spectral continuum level. We describe the development of a fully automated, objective, and reproducible continuum estimation method. Measurements of the fine structure constant are produced using several continuum models. The results show that continuum placement variations result in small systematic shifts in the centroids of narrow photospheric absorption lines which impact significantly on fine structure constant measurements. This effect should therefore be included in the error budgets of future measurements. Our results suggest that continuum placement variations should be investigated in other contexts, including fine structure constant measurements in stars other than white dwarfs. The analysis presented here is based on NiV absorption lines in the photosphere of G191$-$B2B. Curiously, the inferred measurement of the fine structure constant obtained in this paper using NiV (the least negative of our measurements is $\Delta\alpha/\alpha = -1.462 \pm 1.121 \times 10^{-5}$) is inconsistent with the most recent previous G191$-$B2B photospheric measurement using FeV ($\Delta\alpha/\alpha = 6.36 \pm 0.35_{stat} \pm 1.84_{sys} \times 10^{-5}$). Given both measurements are derived from the same spectrum, we presume (but in this work are unable to check) that this 3.2$\sigma$ difference results from unknown laboratory wavelength systematics.

Fundamental constants: from measurement to the universe, a window on gravitation and cosmology

Abstract:Fundamental constants are a cornerstone of the physical laws. Any constant varying in space and/or time would signal a violation of local position invariance and be associated with a violation of the universality of free fall, and hence of the weak equivalence principle. It will reflect the existence of new degrees of freedom that couple to standard matter. Thus, testing for the stability of fundamental constants is of utmost importance for our understanding of gravity and for characterizing the domain of validity of General Relativity. Besides, it opens an independent window on dark matter and dark energy. As a consequence, thanks to the active development of experiments and of their accuracy, fundamental constants have become a key player in our search for physics beyond the standard model of and beyond General Relativity. This review details the roles of the fundamental constants in the laws of physics and in the construction of the International System of units. Then, the relations between constants, tests of the local position invariance and of the universality of free fall are exposed, as well as the construction of field theories that account for "varying constants". Then, the main experimental and observational constraints are described. It details the basics of each system, its dependence with respect to the primary parameters the variation of which can be constrained from observations, the known systematics effects and the most recent constraints. It also describes how these primary parameters can be related to the fundamental constants and the model-dependencies. Both time and space variation are considered. Given the huge increase of data and constraints, a general scheme to present experimental and observational results and to construct a collaborative data base that will be more efficient for the community and allow for better traceability, is proposed.

Abstract:Atoms and molecules can serve as sensitive probes of a possible variation of the fine structure constant $\alpha$ and electron-to-proton mass ratio $\mu$. Two types of sensitivity coefficients are often used to quantify and compare the sensitivity of different species to the variation of fundamental constants. The dimensionless coefficients $K$ are related to the fractional sensitivity, while dimensional factors $q$ are related to the absolute sensitivity. Here we discuss several common errors and misconceptions regarding these coefficients that frequently appear in the literature.

Abstract:Accurate molecular spectroscopy in the mid-infrared region allows precision measurements of fundamental constants. For instance, measuring the linewidth of an isolated Doppler-broadened absorption line of ammonia around 10 $\mu$m enables a determination of the Boltzmann constant k B. We report on our latest measurements. By fitting this lineshape to several models which include Dicke narrowing or speed-dependent collisional effects, we find that a determination of k B with an uncertainty of a few ppm is reachable. This is comparable to the best current uncertainty obtained using acoustic methods and would make a significant contribution to any new value of k B determined by the CODATA. Furthermore, having multiple independent measurements at these accuracies opens the possibility of defining the kelvin by fixing k B, an exciting prospect considering the upcoming redefinition of the International System of Units.

Abstract:Experiments aimed at searching for variations in the fine-structure constant $\alpha$ are based on spectroscopy of transitions in microscopic bound systems, such as atoms and ions, or resonances in optical cavities. The sensitivities of these systems to variations in $\alpha$ are typically on the order of unity and are fixed for a given system. For heavy atoms, highly charged ions and nuclear transitions, the sensitivity can be increased by benefiting from the relativistic effects and favorable arrangement of quantum states. This article proposes a new method for controlling the sensitivity factor of macroscopic physical systems. Specific concepts of optical cavities with tunable sensitivity to $\alpha$ are described. These systems show qualitatively different properties from those of previous studies of the sensitivity of macroscopic systems to variations in $\alpha$, in which the sensitivity was found to be fixed and fundamentally limited to an order of unity. Although possible experimental constraints attainable with the specific optical cavity arrangements proposed in this article do not yet exceed the present best constraints on $\alpha$ variations, this work paves the way for developing new approaches to searching for variations in the fundamental constants of physics.

Abstract:We present a new framework to study the time variation of fundamental constants in a model-independent way. Model independence implies more free parameters than assumed in previous studies. Using data from atomic clocks based on $^{87}$Sr, $^{171}$Yb$^+$ and $^{133}$Cs, we set bounds on parameters controlling the variation of the fine-structure constant, $\alpha$, and the electron-to-proton mass ratio, $\mu$. We consider variations on timescales ranging from a minute to almost a day. In addition, we use our results to derive some of the tightest limits to date on the parameter space of models of ultralight dark matter and axion-like particles.

Abstract:We set up a framework for a model-independent analysis of the time variation of $e$, $\hbar$, and $c$ indiviually. It is shown that the time-evolution of each constant can be determined uniquely from the time evolution of the fine structure constant $\alpha$ provided that the choice of basic time-independent units (i.e., the clock and ruler) is fixed. Realistic systems of units are considered as examples and implications for metrology are discussed.

Abstract:The possible time variation of dimensionless fundamental constants of nature, such as the fine-structure constant $\alpha$, is a legitimate subject of physical enquiry. By contrast, the time variation of dimensional constants, such as $\hbar$, $c$, $G$, $e$, $k$,... which are merely human constructs whose number and values differ from one choice of units to the next, has no operational meaning. To illustrate this, we refute a recent claim of Davies et al that black holes can discriminate between two contending theories of varying $\alpha$, one with varying $c$ and the other with varying $e$. In Appendix A we respond to criticisms by P. Davies and two Nature referees. In Appendix B we respond to remarks by Magueijo and by T. Davis. In Appendix C we critique recent claims by Copi, A. Davis and Krauss to have placed constraints on $\Delta G/G$.} In Appendix D we provide extracts of a lecture by Dirac, of which we have only recently become aware, which includes the comment "Talking about whether a thing is constant or not does not have any absolute meaning unless that quantity is dimensionless".

Abstract:Since Dirac predicted in 1937 possible variation of gravitational constant and other coupling constants from his large number hypothesis, efforts continue to determine such variation without success. Such efforts focus on the variation of one constant while assuming all others pegged to their currently measured values. We show that the variations of the speed of light $c$, the gravitational constant $G$, the Planck constant $h$, and the Boltzmann constant $k$ are interrelated: $G\thicksim c^{3}\thicksim h^{3/2}\thicksim k^{3/2}$. Thus, constraining any one of the constants leads to inadvertently constraining all the others. It may not be possible to determine the variation of a constant without concurrently considering the variation of others. We discuss several astrophysical observations that have been explained recently with the concomitant variation of two or more constants. We also analyze the reported and unexplained 35 micro-gram decrease of 1 Kg Pt-Ir working standards over 22 years of measurements and show that the Kibble balance, that measures mass in units of Planck constant, cannot determine the variation of h when h and c variations are interrelated as determined in here.
