Abstract:Abstract Faraday rotation is a fundamental effect in the magneto-optical response of solids, liquids and gases. Materials with a large Verdet constant find applications in optical modulators, sensors and non-reciprocal devices, such as optical isolators. Here, we demonstrate that the plane of polarization of light exhibits a giant Faraday rotation of several degrees around the A exciton transition in hBN-encapsulated monolayers of WSe 2 and MoSe 2 under moderate magnetic fields. This results in the highest known Verdet constant of -1.9 × 10 7 deg T −1 cm −1 for any material in the visible regime. Additionally, interlayer excitons in hBN-encapsulated bilayer MoS 2 exhibit a large Verdet constant ( V IL ≈ +2 × 10 5 deg T −1 cm −2 ) of opposite sign compared to A excitons in monolayers. The giant Faraday rotation is due to the giant oscillator strength and high g -factor of the excitons in atomically thin semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides. We deduce the complete in-plane complex dielectric tensor of hBN-encapsulated WSe 2 and MoSe 2 monolayers, which is vital for the prediction of Kerr, Faraday and magneto-circular dichroism spectra of 2D heterostructures. Our results pose a crucial advance in the potential usage of two-dimensional materials in ultrathin optical polarization devices.

Giant Nonreciprocal Transmission in Low-Biased Gyrotropic Metasurfaces.

Abstract:Strong magneto-optical effect with low external magnetic field is of great importance to achieve high-performance isolators in modern optics. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a significant enhancement of the magneto-optical effect and nonreciprocal chiral transmission in low-biased gyrotropic media. A designer magneto-optical metasurface consists of a gyrotropy-near-zero slab doped with magnetic resonant inclusions. The immersed magnetic dopants enable efficient nonreciprocal light-matter interactions at the subwavelength scale, providing a giant macroscopic nonreciprocity and strong robustness against the bias disturbance. Microwave measurements reveal that the metasurface can act as a chiral isolator for circular polarization, with extremely weak intrinsic gyromagnetic activity. We also demonstrate its capability of signal isolation for circularly polarized antennas. Our findings provide an experimental verification of nonreciprocal photonic doping with low static magnetic fields.
Faraday-Rotation in Iron Garnet Films Beyond Elemental Substitutions

Abstract:In previous decades significant efforts have been devoted to increasing the magneto-optical efficiency of iron garnet materials for the miniaturization of nonreciprocal devices such as isolators and circulators. Elemental substitutions or proper nano-structuring to benefit from optical resonances have been pursued. However, all these approaches still require film thicknesses of at least several tens of microns to deliver useful device applications, and suffer from narrow bandwidths in the case of optical resonance effects. This Letter reports on a newly discovered enhancement of the Faraday Effect observed experimentally in nanoscale bismuth-substituted iron garnet films. It is shown here that this enhancement is not due to elemental substitution or compositional variations. Nor is it due to photon trapping or resonance effects. Comprehensive experimental and theoretical analysis of the Faraday rotation reveals a dramatic seven-fold amplification in the magneto-optic gyrotropy within only 2 nm of the air-surface interface, corresponding to just a couple of atomic monolayers as a result of symmetry-breaking at the air-film interface. This finding opens up an avenue to the application of monolayer magnetic garnets for the control of light.

Abstract:Single-crystal heterostructured multiferroic (PbTiO3) PTO-(CoFe2O4) CFO nanoplate composites were prepared by a simple two-step hydrothermal process. The CFO nanoparticles with the size of 20-80 nm selectively grow on the positively polarized surface of the single-crystal and single-domain PTO nanoplate. The TEM results demonstrate an epitaxial growth relation between the PTO nanoplates and CFO nanoparticles. The results of the temperature-dependence magnetization of the composites under zero field cooled (ZFC) condition show a novel broad diffuse region around the PTO ferroelectric phase transition (T-c) for the first time. The total change of magnetization (Delta M) near T-c is determined to be (2.71 +/- 0.5) x 10(-3) emu, a change of 46.2%, implying a giant magnetoelectric coupling in these single-crystal heterostructured multiferroic PTO-CFO nanoplate composites. Such effect has been attributed to the absence of the substrate clamping and single domain in ferroelectric PTO nanoplate. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A magnetization-induced rotation in the third-order nonlinear optical response is observed in out-of-plane-magnetized epitaxial EuO films. We discuss the relation of this nonlinear magneto-optical rotation to the linear Faraday rotation. It is allowed in all materials but, in contrast to the linear Faraday rotation, not affected by the reduction of the thickness of the material. Thus, the third-order magneto-optical rotation is particularly suitable for probing the magnetization of functional magnetic materials such as ultra-thin films and multilayers.

Abstract:Magnetic-field control of fundamental optical properties is a crucial challenge in the engineering of multifunctional microdevices. Van der Waals (vdW) magnets retaining a magnetic order even in atomically thin layers, offer a promising platform for hosting exotic magneto-optical functionalities owing to their strong spin-charge coupling. Here, we demonstrate that a giant optical anisotropy can be controlled by magnetic fields in the vdW magnet FePS$_3$. The giant linear dichroism ($\sim$11%), observed below $T_{\text{N}}\!\sim\!120$ K, is nearly fully suppressed in a wide energy range from 1.6 to 2.0 eV, following the collapse of the zigzag magnetic order above 40 T. This remarkable phenomenon can be explained as a result of symmetry changes due to the spin order, enabling minority electrons of Fe$^{2+}$ to hop in a honeycomb lattice. The modification of spin-order symmetry by external fields provides a novel route for controllable anisotropic optical micro-devices.

Giant and controllable nonlinear magneto-optical effects in two-dimensional magnets

Abstract:The interplay of polarization and magnetism in materials with light can create rich nonlinear magneto-optical (NLMO) effects, and the recent discovery of two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals magnets provides remarkable control over NLMO effects due to their superb tunability. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we reported giant NLMO effects in CrI3-based 2D magnets, including a dramatic change of second-harmonics generation (SHG) polarization direction (90 degrees) and intensity (on/off switch) under magnetization reversal, and a 100% SHG circular dichroism effect. We further revealed that these effects could not only be used to design ultra-thin multifunctional optical devices, but also to detect subtle magnetic orderings. Remarkably, we analytically derived conditions to achieve giant NLMO effects and propose general strategies to realize them in 2D magnets. Our work not only uncovers a series of intriguing NLMO phenomena, but also paves the way for both fundamental research and device applications of ultra-thin NLMO materials.

Specular Inverse Faraday Effect in Transition Metals

Abstract:The inverse Faraday effect is an opto-magnetic phenomenon that describes the ability of circularly polarized light to induce magnetism in solids. The capability of light to control magnetic order in solid state materials and devices is of interest for a variety of applications, such as magnetic recording, quantum computation and spintronic technologies. However, significant gaps in understanding about the effect persist, such as what material properties govern the magnitude of the effect in metals. In this work, we report time-resolved measurements of the specular inverse Faraday effect in non-magnetic metals, i.e., the magneto-optic Kerr effect induced by circularly polarized light. We measure this specular inverse Faraday effect in Cu, Pd, Pt, W, Ta, and Au at a laser wavelength of 783 nm. For Ta and W, we investigate both {\alpha} and \{beta} phases. We observe that excitation of these metals with circularly polarized light induces significant circular dichroism. This nonlinear magneto-optical response to circularly polarized light is an order of magnitude larger in {\alpha}-W than other metals, e.g., Pt, Au, and is greater than nearly all other reported values for IFE in other materials. Our results benchmark the range of IFE that can be observed in non-magnetic metals and provide insight into what material properties govern the inverse Faraday effect in metals.

Abstract:The Faraday rotation as a function of photon energy for Cd1−xGdxTe with x=0.012 and 0.030 in the temperature range of 85–300 K has been measured. The Verdet constant includes a positive part and negative part due to pure Zeeman and sp-f exchange interaction contributions, respectively. The sp-f exchange interaction parameter has been determined in Cd1−xGdxTe: (q=9.3×10−4 at 85 K and q=5.3×10−4 at 300 K) in terms of a microscopic model, which takes into account the k dependence of the spin-spin exchange interaction. The normalization parameter C has been found to be independent of both the compositions of Gd and temperature. The agreement between the data and the microscopic model is very good in the whole spectra region even far from the band gap.
Giant natural optical rotation from chiral electromagnons in a collinear antiferromagnet

Abstract:In NiTe$_3$O$_6$ with a chiral crystal structure, we report on a giant natural optical rotation of the lowest-energy magnon. This polarization rotation, as large as 140 deg/mm, corresponds to a path difference between right and left circular polarizations that is comparable to the sample thickness. Natural optical rotation, being a measure of structural chirality, is highly unusual for long-wavelength magnons. The collinear antiferromagnetic order of NiTe$_3$O$_6$ makes this giant effect even more peculiar: Chirality of the crystal structure does not affect the magnetic ground state but is strongly manifested in the lowest excited state. We show that the dynamic magnetoelectric effect, turning this magnon to a magnetic- and electric-dipole active hybrid mode, generates the giant natural optical rotation. In finite magnetic fields, it also leads to a strong optical magnetochiral effect.

Nonlinear Faraday magneto-optic effects in a helically wound optical fiber

Abstract:We thoroughly investigate the Faraday magneto-optical effects in a helically wound nonlinear optical fiber. We find the emergence of an additional rotation angle proportional to the optical intensity, arised from the nonlinear corrections to both the Verdet constant and the fiber torsion. By analyzing an oscillator model describing the electron motions in the fiber medium, we can obtain the third-order susceptibility in the presence of the magnetic field. According to the Maxwell's equations and the minimal coupling principle in the metric expression of the curved space, we derive the propagation equations of light in a helically wound optical fiber. Finally, we have obtained the analytic expressions of Faraday rotation angle for both linearly and elliptically polarized lights, which explicitly indicates an important nonlinear correction on the Faraday rotation angles. Possible experimental observations and some implications of our theoretical findings are discussed.

Abstract:Coupled magnetic-mechanical-electric effects involving linearly and nonlinearly coupling interactions in ferroic composites are investigated using a Green's function technique. We use the theory to suggest a possible giant magnetoelectric effect in a ferroelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluorethylene) copolymer filled by giant magnetostrictive rare-earth-iron alloy particles, which is markedly larger than that in the best known magnetoelectric materials. The flexible composite is expected to exhibit large magnetostriction. Our results show how to design such flexible polymer-matrix magnetoelectric composites with better performance and may stimulate further interest in the areas of coupled multifield effects and magnetoelectric materials for practical applications.

Abstract:By extending our general spin-current model to noncentrosymmetric spin dimers and performing density functional calculations, we investigate the causes for the helical magnetic order and the origin of the giant ferroelectric polarization of CaMn7O12. The giant ferroelectric polarization is proposed to be caused by the symmetric exchange striction due to the canting of the Mn4+ spin arising from its strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Our study suggests that CaMn7O12 may exhibit a novel magnetoelectric coupling mechanism in which the magnitude of the polarization is governed by the exchange striction, but the direction of the polarization by the chirality of the helical magnetic order.

Abstract:The dependences of magneto-optical effect, effective optical constants, and giant magnetoresistance (GMR) on the thickness of Cu layers were investigated in NiCo/Cu multilayers prepared by rf magnetron sputtering. A peak of saturation polar Kerr rotation θK, occurred simultaneously with that of GMR ratio when the Cu thickness is around 1.0 nm, where a clear drop of the effective optical constants n and k appeared. The peak of θK is mainly caused by the reduction of the effective optical constants, which dominate over the small drop of the effective off-diagonal elements of the dielectric tensor. The concurrent variation of GMR and θK is related to antiferromagnetic interlayer coupling, which may change the electron band structure and thus the optical and magneto-optical transitions of electrons.

Abstract:The properties of optics and magneto-optical Faraday effects in a metal-dielectric tri-layer structure with subwavelength rectangular annular arrays are investigated. It is noteworthy that we obtained the strongly enhanced Faraday rotation of the desired sign along with high transmittance by optimizing the parameters of the nanostructure in the visible spectral ranges. In this system, we obtained two extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) resonant peaks with enhanced Faraday rotations, whose signs are opposite, which may provide the possibility of designing multi-channel magneto-optical devices. Study results show that the maximum of the figure of merit (FOM) of the structure can be obtained between two EOT resonant peaks accompanied by an enhanced Faraday rotation. The positions of the maximum value of the FOM and resonant peaks of transmission along with a large Faraday rotation can be tailored by simply adjusting the geometric parameters of our models. These research findings are of great importance for future applications of magneto-optical devices.

Abstract:The magneto-optic rotation enhanced by plamonic resonance brought a new method in the research of magnetoplasmon and magneto-optical devices. To further the availability of this method, the Faraday effect on embedded nano-gratings with Bi-substituted yttrium iron garnet substrate is investigated here to achieve bi-directional rotation enhancement selectively. The surface of the simulation structure is designed as 1-D gratings to excite extraordinary optical transmission, and the transmitted light is rotated in the magneto-optic (MO) material. It is found that the characteristic of the bi-directional Faraday rotation enhancement can be greatly influenced by the embedding depth of the metal strips in the MO material. According to this, without changing the applied magnetic field or turning over the MO material, the selectively enhanced Faraday rotation is produced along two opposite directions. Moreover, by optimizing the thickness of metal, a great improvement of figure of merit is obtained. Finally, in the same wavelength regime, the properties of the structure are contrasted when the metal is set to be gold or silver, respectively. This letter provides a useful thought in magnetoplasmon studies, and can be used to fabricate many magneto-optical devices.

Abstract:Many technological applications are based on electric or magnetic order of materials, for instance magnetic memory. Multiferroics are materials which exhibit electric and magnetic order simultaneously. Due to the coupling of electric and magnetic effects, these materials show a strong potential to control electricity and magnetism and, more generally, the properties and propagation of light. One of the most fascinating and counter-intuitive recent results in multiferroics is directional anisotropy, the asymmetry of light propagation with respect to the direction of propagation. The absorption in the material can be different for forward and backward propagation of light, which in extreme case may lead to complete suppression of absorption in one direction. Another remarkable effect in multiferroics is directional birefringence, i.e. different velocities of light for different directions of propagation. In this paper, we demonstrate giant directional birefringence in a multiferroic samarium ferroborate. The effect is easily observed for linear polarization of light in the range of millimeter-wavelengths, and survives down to very low frequencies. The dispersion and absorption close to the electromagnon resonance can be controlled and fully suppressed in one direction. Therefore, samarium ferroborate is a universal tool for optical control: with a magnetic field as an external parameter it allows switching between two functionalities: polarization rotation and directional anisotropy.

Abstract:Many of the iron pnictides have strongly anisotropic normal-state characteristics, important for the exotic magnetic and superconducting behavior these materials exhibit. Yet, the origin of the observed anisotropy is unclear. Electronically driven nematicity has been suggested, but distinguishing this as an independent degree of freedom from magnetic and structural orders is difficult, as these couple together to break the same tetragonal symmetry. Here we use time-resolved polarimetry to reveal critical nematic fluctuations in unstrained Ba(Fe_(1-x)Co_x)_2As_2. The femtosecond anisotropic response, which arises from the two-fold in-plane anisotropy of the complex refractive index, displays a characteristic two-step recovery absent in the isotropic response. The fast recovery appears only in the magnetically ordered state, whereas the slow one persists in the paramagnetic phase with a critical divergence approaching the structural transition temperature. The dynamics also reveal a gigantic magnetoelastic coupling that far exceeds electron-spin and electron-phonon couplings, opposite to conventional magnetic metals.
Periodic Giant Polarization Gradients in Doped BiFeO3 Thin Films

Abstract:The ultimate challenge for the development of new multiferroics with enhanced properties lies in achieving nanoscale control of the coupling between different ordering parameters. In oxide-based multiferroics, substitutional cation dopants offer the unparalleled possibility to modify both the electric and magnetic properties at a local scale. Herein it is demonstrated the formation of a dopant-controlled polar pattern in BiFeO3 leading to the spontaneous instauration of periodic polarization waves. In particular, nonpolar Ca-doped rich regions act as spacers between consecutive dopant-depleted regions displaying coupled ferroelectric states. This alternation of layers with different ferroelectric state creates a novel vertical polar structure exhibiting giant polarization gradients as large as 70 μC cm-2 across 30 Å thick domains. The drastic change in the polar state of the film is visualized using high-resolution differential phase-contrast imaging able to map changes in ferroelectric polarization at atomic scale. Furthermore, a periodic distortion in the Fe-O-Fe bonding angle suggests a local variation in the magnetic ordering. The findings provide a new insight into the role of doping and reveal hitherto unexplored means to tailor the functional properties of multiferroics by doping engineering.

Abstract:Using in situ electric-field-modulated anisotropic magnetoresistance measurement, a large reversible and nonvolatile in-plane rotation of magnetic easy axis of similar to 35 degrees between the positive and negative electrical poling states is demonstrated in Co40Fe40B20/(001)-cut Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-0.25PbTiO(3) (PMN-PT). The specific magnetoelectric coupling mechanism therein is experimentally verified to be related to the synchronous in-plane strain rotation induced by 109 degrees ferroelastic domain switching in the (001)-cut PMN-PT substrate.
