Abstract:Southern Africa is an amalgamation of a distinct Archean core, several Proterozoic mobile belts, and large igneous provinces, making it an ideal natural laboratory for studying Precambrian crustal evolution and deformation. Here we present a new radially anisotropic shear-velocity model of the crust and uppermost mantle beneath Southern Africa using Rayleigh- and Love-wave ambient noise tomography from multiple seismic networks. In the upper and middle crust, the distribution of the isotropic shear velocity correlates well with known surface geology. However, in the lower crust there is no systematic lateral variation of shear velocity between the Archean and Proterozoic terranes, which is likely due to the intensive modifications of Precambrian crust by several later thermo-tectonic events through processes such as lower crustal flow. The strong positive radial anisotropy (V-SH > V-SV) in the lower crust, when combined with weak azimuthal anisotropy imaged previously, suggests a complex flow pattern, the directions of which likely varied on local-scale due to inhomogeneous shortening or extension during the multiple post-cratonization thermo-tectonic events.

Abstract:The Central Red Sea Rift is a natural laboratory to study the transition from rifting to spreading. Based on new reflection seismic profiles and gravity modeling, we examined the crustal structure, tectonic evolution, breakup mechanism, and future evolution of the Central Red Sea Rift. Along this rift axis, the breakup of continental lithosphere is discontinuous and the oceanic crust is limited to the axial deeps. The punctiform breakup and formation of deeps is assisted by mantle upwelling and topographic uplift, but the nucleation is directly controlled by the normal-fault system. The discontinuities spaced between axial deeps within the relatively continuous central troughs are presently axial domes or highs and will evolve into new deeps with tectonic subsidence. Isolated deeps will grow and connect with each other to become a continuous central trough, before transitioning into a unified spreading center.

Abstract:The Southwestern Branch of the East African Rift System propagates through the Central and Southern African plateaus and ends in the Okavango Makgadikgadi Zambezi Basin. This basin hosts the Okavango Graben and the Eiseb Graben, considered as the terminus of the Southwestern Branch of the rift. To the southeast, the Makgadikgadi Basin is affected by a series of normal faults forming the Makgadikgadi Rift Zone (MRZ) which regional geodynamic significance remains unclear. Based on fieldwork and geomorphic analysis, we revisited the geomorphological features associated with paleolakes and the fault pattern within the Makgadikgadi Basin to better constrain the dynamics of the MRZ. Fault scarps and offsets along linear dunes show normal‐dip kinematics of faults, indicating a NW‐SE extension direction in the area. Furthermore, lacustrine shorelines in the basin are undeformed, proving that they post‐date the fault activity. The previously published ages of these shorelines demonstrate that the MRZ currently has a low tectonic activity. Integrated in the geodynamic framework of the region, these results suggest that present‐day deformation shifts toward the Okavango Graben north of the MRZ. We therefore propose a "zip‐opening" model to explain the propagation of the Southwestern Branch of the East African Rift System where the tip of the system progressively progresses southwestward, driven by motions of the continental plates.

Abstract:Numerous investigations of the mature segments of the East African rift system (EARS) have significantly improved our understanding of the structure and processes associated with well-developed continental rifts. In contrast, knowledge of rifting processes at their early stage is still significantly limited. Here we present results from a teleseismic P-wave tomography investigation of the incipient Okavango rift zone (ORZ), which is located at the southwestern terminus of the EARS. P-wave relative travel-time residuals recorded by 17 recently deployed portable seismic stations were manually picked and inverted for three-dimensional upper-mantle and mantle transition-zone tomographic images beneath the ORZ and its adjacent areas. High-velocity anomalies probably representing cratonic lithosphere are visible under the Congo and Kalahari cratons, extending to depths of ∼250–350 km. The tectonic boundary of the Congo craton is observed along the western edge of the ORZ. A localized low-velocity anomaly of about –1% in magnitude is revealed in the upper asthenosphere beneath the ORZ, which is interpreted to represent decompression melting induced by lithospheric thinning. The results support the notion that the initiation and early-stage development of the ORZ are mostly due to lithospheric stretching resulted from the relative motion between the Archean Congo and Kalahari cratons along preexisting ancient orogenic zones.

Abstract:We report new PKS, SKS, and SKKS splitting measurements for 88 seismic stations in Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, and Mozambique. When combined with measurements from previous studies, the ensemble of measurements shows a fairly uniform NNE to NE (∼41° on average) fast‐polarization direction (φ) and delay time (δt) (∼0.7 s on average) across the entire southern African subcontinent. It is difficult to attribute the NNE‐NE φ direction to just one source of anisotropy either within the lithospheric or sublithospheric mantle. We instead propose the observed anisotropy pattern could result from a combination of several sources that together give rise to a pervasive NNE‐NE φ direction; (a) fossil anisotropy in the lithospheric mantle resulting from the Neoproterozoic collision of the Congo and Kalahari cratons to form the Damara Belt, (b) movement of the African plate over the asthenosphere, and (c) flow in the upper mantle induced by the African Superplume. In addition, a contribution from anisotropy in the lowermost mantle in the vicinity of the African large low shear velocity province cannot be ruled out.

Abstract:Recent biological surveys of ancient inselbergs in southern Malawi and northern Mozambique have led to the discovery and description of many species new to science, and overlapping centres of endemism across multiple taxa. Combining these endemic taxa with data on geology and climate, we propose the 'South East Africa Montane Archipelago' (SEAMA) as a distinct ecoregion of global biological importance. The ecoregion encompasses 30 granitic inselbergs reaching > 1000 m above sea level, hosting the largest (Mt Mabu) and smallest (Mt Lico) mid-elevation rainforests in southern Africa, as well as biologically unique montane grasslands. Endemic taxa include 127 plants, 45 vertebrates (amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals) and 45 invertebrate species (butterflies, freshwater crabs), and two endemic genera of plants and reptiles. Existing dated phylogenies of endemic animal lineages suggests this endemism arose from divergence events coinciding with repeated isolation of these mountains from the pan-African forests, together with the mountains' great age and relative climatic stability. Since 2000, the SEAMA has lost 18% of its primary humid forest cover (up to 43% in some sites)—one of the highest deforestation rates in Africa. Urgently rectifying this situation, while addressing the resource needs of local communities, is a global priority for biodiversity conservation.

Abstract:Abstract The Kalahari Basin in southern Africa, shaped by subsidence and epeirogeny, features the Okavango Rift Zone (ORZ) as a significant structural element characterized by diffused extensional deformation forming a prominent depocenter. This study elucidates the Pleistocene landscape evolution of the ORZ by examining the chronology of sediment formation and filling this incipient rift and its surroundings. Modeling of cosmogenic nuclide concentrations in surficial eolian sand from distinct structural blocks around the ORZ provides insights into sand's residence time on the surface. Sand formation occurred from ∼2.2 to 1.1 Ma, coinciding with regional tectonic events. Notably, provenance analyses of sand within ORZ's lowermost block where large alluvial fans are found indicate different source rocks and depositional environments than those of the eolian sands found at a higher elevation. This suggests that the major phase of rift subsidence and the following incision of alluvial systems into the rift occurred after eolian dune formation. Luminescence dating reveals that deposition in alluvial fan settings in the incised landscape began not later than ∼250 ka, and that a lacustrine environment existed since at least ∼140 ka. The established chronological framework constrains the geomorphological effects of the different tectono‐climatic forces that shaped this nascent rifting area. It highlights two pronounced stages of landscape development, with the most recent major deformation event in the evolving rift probably occurring during the middle Pleistocene transition (1.2–0.75 Ma). This event is reflected as a striking change in the depositional environments due to the configurational changes accompanying rift progression.

Abstract:The idea of Africa Alive Corridors (AAC) evolved from Gondwana geological mapping to a comprehensive, more inclusive and dynamic approach to transdisciplinary research known as Earth Stewardship Science. Twenty designated corridors explore the geo-biological and cultural heritage of different regions of Africa over various periods, from deep time to the Anthropocene. Each corridor reveals a specific lens through which to investigate some of the rich scientific narratives embedded within it. The concept also facilitates learning and knowledge exchange across numerous disciplines: archeology, geology, geophysics, oceanography, glaciology, biology, botany, ecology, agriculture, engineering, spatial statistics, social sciences, and the humanities. This contribution analyses ten selected corridors in southern and western Africa, the Congo Basin, East Africa, and Madagascar. The various research themes explored include Earth impact hazard, origins of humankind, Snowball Earth, coastal food systems and conservation, the biogeography of lemurs, human settlement dynamics in Cameroon, tectonically linked earthquake occurrences in Algeria and Morocco, modelling land-use changes in the Western Rift Valley, trades and civilizations of the Mali Empire, Mbira music, and contemporary art. The ongoing work on these—and ten other—corridors has considerable potential to host new international collaborations to develop the links between society and natural sciences in Africa. Ultimately, AAC will benefit all stakeholders, especially the youth, in understanding and responding to societal needs and current global challenges.

Abstract:The discovery of the South East Africa Montane Archipelago has unveiled a biologically significant ecoregion with a high level of endemism, showcasing at least 127 endemic plants and 45 endemic vertebrates, including unique genera of both plants and reptiles. This remarkable find highlights Africa's ongoing contributions to global ecological knowledge, despite often being underrepresented in the international research sphere due to biases and marginalisation. To address these issues and enhance the visibility and impact of African ecological research, this Editorial outlines several key strategies. First, it emphasises the importance of making hypothesis‐driven research in ecological studies, following Popper's philosophy of science. Second, it advocates for generalising research findings to broader contexts rather than focusing narrowly on local specifics. Additionally, it underscores the need use clear, generalised terminology and producing detailed, context‐rich maps, so that the authors can enhance the comprehensibility and appeal of their research. Finally, the Editorial highlights the growing influence of African ecology, as evidenced by that the difference in impact factor between AJE and major international general ecology journals has decreased greatly. The Editorial also suggests that by adopting the strategies highlighted herein, African ecologists can further elevate their global presence and contribute more substantially to the field.

Abstract:Abstract There are far too few studies on Namibian art and artists in the diaspora. In response to this, I look at the work of Herman Mbamba, Jackson Wahengo and Shishani Vranckx. Mbamba is a visual artist based in Haugesund, Norway while musicians Wahengo and Vranckx are based in Copenhagen, Denmark and Amsterdam, The Netherlands, respectively. I offer an aesthetic reading, unpacking their work as counter-hegemonic maps, that signal the places of imagining otherwise. Wahengo and Vranckx’s songs lean towards national cultural memory while Mbamba’s abstract and figurative paintings conceal everyday realities. The concept of speculative cartography is applied, to read how these artists as African Diasporic subjects, speak to historic displacements and scatterings, while orientating themselves within national cultural memory that goes beyond ‘Namibianess’ or the African Diaspora. I argue that the speculative cartographies generate Thirdspaces that collapse binaries between settled and unsettled, imaginable and unimaginable, material and metaphysical spaces.
Role of Pan-African Events in the Circum-East Antarctic Orogen of East Gondwana: a Critical Overview

Abstract:Abstract Recent studies of Pan-African events in East Gondwana are critically reviewed, particularly recent models of amalgamation of East Gondwana during the Pan-African period. It is pointed out that critical data are insufficient to constrain the newly proposed models and so the classical model of the Grenvillian Circum-East Antarctic Orogen cannot yet be replaced. Grenvillian tectonothermal events with a peak between 1.0 and 1.2Ga assembled different crustal blocks of the East Antarctic Shield with different geohistories. Pan-African tectonothermal reworking took place over wide but selected areas of the orogen. Careful geochronological studies, including SHRIMP dating associated with structural and petrological investigations to correlate ages with those events, are shown to be important, since fluid-rich and/or deformational conditions are equally effective as temperature conditions for mineral recrystallization and resetting of isotopic systematics. Pan-African suture zones, one extending from the Mozambique Belt to the Shackleton Range and another connecting the Mozambique Belt to the Zambezi Belt, are equally possible, although the width of the southern Mozambique Ocean is poorly understood. The extent of Pan-African sutures in the Prydz Bay area is enigmatic, although they represent definite orogens. Palaeomagnetic studies may provide critical constraints in evaluating the sutures, provided that the age of magnetization is well established.
South Atlantic continental margins of Africa: a comparison of the tectonic vs climate interplay on the evolution of equatorial west Africa and SW Africa margins

Abstract:The comparative review of 2 representative segments of Africa continental margin: the equatorial western Africa and the SW Africa margins, helps in analysing the main controlling factors on their development. Early Cretaceous active rifting S of the Walvis Ridge resulted in the formation of the SW Africa volcanic margin. The non-volcanic rifting N of the Walvis ridge, led to the formation of the equatorial western Africa margin, with thick and extensive, synrift basins. Regressive erosion of SW Africa prominent shoulder uplift accounts for high clastic sedimentation rate in Late Cretaceous - Eocene, while dominant carbonate production on equatorial western Africa shelf suggests little erosion of a low hinterland. The early Oligocene climate change had contrasted response in both margins. Emplacement of the Congo deep-sea fan reflects increased erosion in equatorial Africa, under the influence of wet climate, whereas establishment of an arid climate over SW Africa induced a drastic decrease of denudation, and thus reduced sedimentation on the margin. Neogene emplacement of the African superswell beneath S. Africa renewed onshore uplift on both margins, but it accelerated erosion only in the Congo catchment, due to wetter climate. Neogene high sedimentation rate reactivated gravitational tectonics that had remained quiescent since late Cretaceous.

Abstract:In the context of a weakening of Namibia's resource-oriented economy, which is anchored on a rather narrow and vulnerable footing, tourism is placed to play a more prominent role in the future. It will provide a more sustainable development perspective as a potential mechanism to address socio-economic inequalities, in particular for regional and rural areas. This research note describes Namibia's tourism economy and tourism products noting the country's commitment to sustainable tourism. It then puts forward the notion that the advancement of geotourism presents a sustainable development opportunity based on Namibia's rich and diverse geological assets and landscapes. Case studies are presented of two current geotourism attractions, the /Ai/Ais-Richtersveld Transfrontier Park and Hoba Meteorite National Monument. The paper concludes by arguing that geotourism can be a valuable sustainable development vehicle for Namibia through the generation of economic revenue, community wellbeing, and conservation.

Abstract:New mapping of the Barberton Greenstone Belt in South Africa shows that the central part is a pseudo-stratigraphy made of shallow-water and deep-water siliciclastic and volcanic slide blocks, with individual blocks ranging in size from tens of meters to >10 km in length. The outcrop pattern and scale are remarkably similar to those of large-scale Miocene to recent submarine landslides in New Zealand along the active Hikurangi subduction zone that are periodically triggered by earthquakes on the subduction megathrust, providing evidence for megathrust earthquakes in the Paleoarchean.

Abstract:The decline of biodiversity is a key topic in public discussions around the globe. These debates have triggered massive efforts to increase protected areas and to safeguard the corridors connecting them. The wildlife corridors dealt with in this article are mainly thought to facilitate the mobility of elephants and some other large herbivores (for example, zebra and buffalo). Wildlife corridors are not only essential for species connectivity but also an integral part of the booming ecotourism in north-eastern Namibia's conservation landscapes. Coexistence infrastructure is meant to contribute to economic development and local incomes. Conservancies - community-based conservation organisations in the Namibian context - gazette corridors and market wildlife abundance to ecotourists, potential investors in tourism and commercial hunters. The coexistence of humans and wildlife is challenging, though. Human-wildlife interactions frequently result in damage, and often conservationist environmental infrastructuring runs against the aims of farmers to expand their fields for commercial crop production and to gain pastures for growing cattle herds. It also runs against other governmentally endorsed infrastructuring that brings tarred roads, water pipelines and boreholes. This article analyses contested wildlife corridors as part of a larger conservationist project in the western parts of Namibia's Zambezi Region.

Abstract:A detailed understanding of the association between magmatism and rift initiation is key to defining the prevailing tectonic conditions active during the initial break-up of Gondwana. The Bumbeni Complex in northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa represents an early Cretaceous silicic volcanic centre exposed at the southwestern termination of a linear zone of magnetic anomalies which are buried beneath sedimentary cover. Newly acquired high resolution aeromagnetic data combined with legacy seismic and borehole data is analysed to define the structural architecture of the basement beneath the Zululand Basin in northern KwaZulu-Natal. Multiple prominent positive and negative anomalies ranging from −200 nT to +300 nT based on International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF) and corrected Reduced to Pole (RTP) data are resolved and form a distinct geophysical lineament. Geophysical and borehole core data indicate that the lineament represents a chain of silicic central volcanoes developed as a ridge feature, the Bumbeni Ridge, along the axial zone of an incipient rift structure. Detailed geological mapping and high resolution geophysical data are analysed and compared with analogous contemporary continental rift environments, as well as published data within the adjacent offshore Northern Natal Valley. Results are presented which propose a continental rift evolutionary model for Gondwana breakup in the Zululand Basin in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

Abstract:Africa is experiencing extensive biodiversity loss due to rapid changes in the environment, where natural resources constitute the main instrument for socioeconomic development and a mainstay source of livelihoods for an increasing population. Lack of data and information deficiency on biodiversity, but also budget constraints and insufficient financial and technical capacity, impede sound policy design and effective implementation of conservation and management measures. The problem is further exacerbated by the lack of harmonized indicators and databases to assess conservation needs and monitor biodiversity losses. We review challenges with biodiversity data (availability, quality, usability, and database access) as a key limiting factor that impact funding and governance. We also evaluate the drivers of both ecosystems change and biodiversity loss as a central piece of knowledge to develop and implement effective policies. While the continent focuses more on the latter, we argue that the two are complementary in shaping restoration and management solutions. We thus underscore the importance of establishing monitoring programs focusing on biodiversity-ecosystem linkages in order to inform evidence-based decisions in ecosystem conservation and restoration in Africa.
