Abstract:In this paper a three-parameter family of Boussinesq systems is studied. The systems have been proposed as models of the propagation of long internal waves along the interface of a two-layer system of fluids with rigid-lid condition for the upper layer and under a Boussinesq regime for the flow in both layers. We first present some theoretical properties of well-posedness, conservation laws and Hamiltonian structure of the systems. Then the corresponding periodic initial-value problem is discretized in space by the spectral Fourier Galerkin method and for each system, error estimates for the semidiscrete approximation are proved. The rest of the paper is concerned with the study of existence and the numerical simulation of some issues of the dynamics of solitary-wave solutions. Standard theories are used to derive several results of existence of classical and generalized solitary waves, depending on the parameters of the models. A numerical procedure is used to generate numerically approximations of solitary waves. These are taken as initial conditions in a computational study of the dynamics of the solitary waves, both classical and generalized. To this end, the spectral semidiscretizations of the periodic initial-value problem for the systems are numerically integrated by a fourth-order Runge-Kutta-composition method based on the implicit midpoint rule. The fully discrete scheme is then used to approximate the evolution of perturbations of computed solitary wave profiles, and to study computationally the collisions of solitary waves as well as the resolution of initial data into trains of solitary waves.
Notes on solitary-wave solutions of Rosenau-type equations

Abstract:The present paper is concerned with the existence of solitary wave solutions of Rosenau-type equations. By using two standard theories, Normal Form Theory and Concentration-Compactness Theory, some results of existence of solitary waves of three different forms are derived. The results depend on some conditions on the speed of the waves with respect to the parameters of the equations. They are discussed for several families of Rosenau equations present in the literature. The analysis is illustrated with a numerical study of generation of approximate solitary-wave profiles from a numerical procedure based on the Petviashvili iteration.

Abstract:A general semi-analytic method is suggested to obtain the solitary wave solutions for some kinds of nonlinear equations, by the combination of the function-series method and the simulated annealing technique. The validity and reliability of the method are tested by applying it to the study of a generalized φ4 equation. With the proper boundary and initial conditions, pulse-, kink- and breather-like solitons and their combinations are obtained.

Abstract:We provide the existence and asymptotic description of solitary wave solutions to a class of modified Green-Naghdi systems, modeling the propagation of long surface or internal waves. This class was recently proposed by Duch{ê}ne, Israwi and Talhouk (Stud. Appl. Math.,137 (2016)) in order to improve the frequency dispersion of the original Green-Naghdi system while maintaining the same precision. The solitary waves are constructed from the solutions of a constrained minimization problem. The main difficulties stem from the fact that the functional at stake involves low order non-local operators, intertwining multiplications and convolutions through Fourier multipliers.

Remarks on solitary waves in equations with nonlocal cubic terms

Abstract:In this overview paper, we show existence of smooth solitary-wave solutions to the nonlinear, dispersive evolution equations of the form \begin{equation*} \partial_t u + \partial_x(\Lambda^s u + u\Lambda^r u^2) = 0, \end{equation*} where $\Lambda^s, \Lambda^r$ are Bessel-type Fourier multipliers. The linear operator may be of low fractional order, $s>0$, while the operator on the nonlinear part is assumed to act slightly smoother, $r<s-1$. The problem is related to the mathematical theory of water waves; we build upon previous works on similar equations, extending them to allow for a nonlocal nonlinearity. Mathematical tools include constrained minimization, Lion's concentration-compactness principle, spectral estimates, and product estimates in fractional Sobolev spaces.

Abstract:This study is concerned with solitary wave solutions and the dynamic behavior of the (2+1)-dimensional nonlinear fractional Schrödinger system. By exploring the dynamic properties of the equilibrium levels to the corresponding Hamiltonian, the expressions of exact solutions of the above system are obtained, including solitary wave solutions, periodic wave solutions, singular periodic wave solutions, singular wave solutions, kink wave solutions, and anti-kink wave solutions. Moreover, the linear stability, geometric characteristics, and limiting behavior of these solutions to the nonlinear fractional Schrödinger system were investigated.

Abstract:Considered here are two systems of equations modeling the two-way propagation of long-crested, long-wavelength internal waves along the interface of a two-layer system of fluids in the Benjamin-Ono and the Intermediate Long-Wave regime, respectively. These systems were previously shown to have solitary-wave solutions, decaying to zero algebraically for the Benjamin-Ono system, and exponentially in the Intermediate Long-Wave regime. Several methods to approximate solitary-wave profiles were introduced and analyzed by the authors in Part I of this project. A natural continuation of this previous work, pursued here, is to study the dynamics of the solitary-wave solutions of these systems. This will be done by computational means using a discretization of the periodic initial-value problem. The numerical method used here is a Fourier spectral method for the spatial approximation coupled with a fourth-order, explicit Runge-Kutta time stepping. The resulting, fully discrete scheme is used to study computationally the stability of the solitary waves under small and large perturbations, the collisions of solitary waves, the resolution of initial data into trains of solitary waves, and the formation of dispersive shock waves. Comparisons with related unidirectional models are also undertaken.

Abstract:We describe completely 2-solitary waves related to the ground state of the nonlinear damped Klein–Gordon equation ∂ _ttu+2α∂ _tu-Δ u+u-|u|^p-1u=0 on ℝ^N , for 1⩽ N⩽ 5 and energy subcritical exponents p>2 . The description is twofold. First, we prove that 2-solitary waves with same sign do not exist. Second, we construct and classify the full family of 2-solitary waves in the case of opposite signs. Close to the sum of two remote solitary waves, it turns out that only the components of the initial data in the unstable direction of each ground state are relevant in the large time asymptotic behavior of the solution. In particular, we show that 2-solitary waves have a universal behavior: the distance between the solitary waves is asymptotic to log t as t→∞ . This behavior is due to damping of the initial data combined with strong interactions between the solitary waves.

Abstract:This study delved into the dynamics of wave solutions within the Estevez-Mansfield-Clarkson equation in fractional nonlinear space-time. Utilizing conformable fractional derivatives, the equation governing shallow water phenomena and fluid dynamics was transformed into a nonlinear ordinary differential equation. Applying the Riccati Bernoulli sub-ODE approach yielded a finite series representation. Notably, our findings revealed novel solitary wave solutions characterized by kink, anti-kink, periodic, and shock functions. Visualized through 3D and contour graphs, kink and periodic waves emerged as distinct observable manifestations. Intriguingly, the diversity of results surpassed previous results, contributing to a deeper understanding of the intricate dynamics inherent in the system.

Abstract:This paper considers two-dimensional steady solitary waves with constant vorticity propagating under the influence of gravity over an impermeable flat bed. Unlike in previous works on solitary waves, we allow for both internal stagnation points and overhanging wave profiles. Using analytic global bifurcation theory, we construct continuous curves of large-amplitude solutions. Along these curves, either the wave amplitude approaches the maximum possible value, the dimensionless wave speed becomes unbounded, or a singularity develops in a conformal map describing the fluid domain. This is stronger than what one would expect from a straightforward generalization of existing results for periodic waves. We also show that an arbitrary solitary wave of elevation with constant vorticity must be supercritical. The existence proof relies on a novel reformulation of the problem as an elliptic system for two scalar functions in a fixed domain, one describing the conformal map of the fluid region and the other the flow beneath the wave.

Abstract:In this paper, we present several methods of judging shape of the solitary wave and solution formulae for some nonlinear evolution equations by means of Lienard equations. Then, using the judgement methods and solution formulae, we obtain solutions of the solitary wave for some of important nonlinear evolution equations, which include generalized modified Boussinesq, generalized nonlinear wave, generalized Fisher, generalized Klein–Gordon and generalized Zakharov equations. Some new solitary-wave solutions are found for the equations.

Singular solutions for a class of traveling wave equations arising in hydrodynamics

Abstract:We give an exhaustive characterization of singular weak solutions for ordinary differential equations of the form $\ddot{u}\,u + \frac{1}{2}\dot{u}^2 + F'(u) =0$, where $F$ is an analytic function. Our motivation stems from the fact that in the context of hydrodynamics several prominent equations are reducible to an equation of this form upon passing to a moving frame. We construct peaked and cusped waves, fronts with finite-time decay and compact solitary waves. We prove that one cannot obtain peaked and compactly supported traveling waves for the same equation. In particular, a peaked traveling wave cannot have compact support and vice versa. To exemplify the approach we apply our results to the Camassa-Holm equation and the equation for surface waves of moderate amplitude, and show how the different types of singular solutions can be obtained varying the energy level of the corresponding planar Hamiltonian systems.

All possible phase portraits in the parameter plane for the travelling wavesystems are obtained. The possible solitary wave solutions, periodic wave solutions and cusp waves for the general Boussinesq type fluid model are also investigated.

Abstract:A theory is developed relating to the stability of solitary-wave solutions of the so-called Benjamin-Ono equation. This equation was derived by Benjamin (5) as a model for the propagation of internal waves in an incompressible non-diffusive heterogeneous fluid for which the density is non-constant only within a layer whose thickness is much smaller than the total depth. In his article, Benjamin wrote in closed form the one-parameter family of solitary-wave solutions of his model equation whose stability will be the focus of attention presently.

Abstract:The simplified modified Camassa-Holm equation, a developed Korteweg-de Vries equation, is an integrable nonlinear dispersive water wave equation with potential applications in diverse fields such as shallow water waves, liquid drop patterning, water surface waves in channels, tsunamis in coastal regions, ocean engineering, etc. In this study, we derived solitary wave solutions to the described equation, employing two reliable approaches: the enhanced modified simple equation and the extended Kudryashov methods. The enhanced modified simple equation technique yields solutions with variable coefficients through a generalized wave transformation. On the other hand, the extended Kudryashov method exploits the solutions of the Riccati and Bernoulli differential equations. The determined results include diverse soliton solutions expressed in the form of trigonometric, hyperbolic, and rational functions. Notably, for specific parameter values, these solutions exhibit wave of distinct shapes, including kink, smooth kink, flat kink, periodic, singular periodic, one-sided kink, etc. To apparently explain the physical behavior and the impact of the fractional parameter in the solutions, we plotted three- and two-dimensional graphs. The obtained solutions have potential applications in oceanography, spanning offshore rigs, ocean gravity waves, and wave energy.
