Abstract:This chapter is a brief review of research and developments in the field of flame retardant textiles. The review focuses mainly on the currently available flame retardant solutions for different kinds of textiles. It gives insights into the general mode of action of flame retardants, types of flame retardant fibers, flame retardant additives for fibers and surface treatments and standard test methods for flame retardant textiles. The existing commercial flame retardant treatments for textiles are over 50 years old and some of them have created environmental concerns. Over the past few decades there have been considerable developments in inherently flame retardant synthetic fibers but effective and environmentally friendly flame retardant coatings or finishing solutions for textiles still elude us.

Abstract:This chapter discusses several types of flame retardant systems that are feasible for textiles. The main categories of chemical-and non-chemical flame retardant systems are discussed, so called barrier technologies, their basic mechanisms during fire, and compatibility with natural and polymeric textile materials. The chapter also includes a market review of and forecast information on the most common flame retardants on the market. Finally, developments of new flame retardant systems are described, especially designed for requirements of efficiency, health and environmental friendliness. One of the largest areas of research and development involves the use of nanotechnology to impart flame retardancy and increased functionality to textiles and other areas. However, technical and commercial viability is still limited and their future use in commercial settings remains questionable; only a few combinations of nano flame retardants with traditional flame retardants have met performance requirements.

Abstract:Application of flame retardants plays a crucial protective function to reduce overall fire risk by suppressing the spread of fires or by delaying the time of flashover, thus enabling people or resources to have sufficient time to escape or rescue from the fire hazards, respectively. Among them, only few have gained commercial importance, are halogenated and phosphorus-based flame retardants those proved to be persistent are carcinogenic, bioaccumulative, and toxic for animals and humans. There has been an ever-growing demand for new flame retardant product options recognizing not only to ensure a favourable ecological profile but also to have a durable and cost-effective product. The sustainability concerns of various hazardous textile chemicals have been intensively researched. This chapter discusses fire science concepts, histrotical development in fire retardants their types, applications and some potential alternative products that have recently been reported—such as natural extracts of casein, spinach, and banana—along with currently reported technology such as DNA, nano materials, plasma, etc.

Abstract:Fabrics with durable flame retardancy are of great importance for preventing potential fire threats in daily life. This review presents a comprehensive discussion of advances in durable flame-retardant fabrics by finishing over the decade. The environmentally sustainable and toxicologically acceptable strategies for improving the durable flame retardancy of fabrics are classified into six types:. (i) the formation of covalent bonds, (ii) the formation of crosslinking networks, (iii) the formation of water-insoluble products, (iv) the use of adhesive layers, (v) the construction of hydrophobic layers, and (vi) the intercalation of flame-retardants into fibres. The design principles, methodologies, and existing problems of different fabrication strategies for imparting durable flame retardancy are summarized and reviewed. The advantages and disadvantages of each strategy are critically discussed. The current challenges and future opportunities are also proposed based on the current market requirements and state-of-the-art technologies. Many recent methodologies have great potential for replacing the conventional durable flame-retardant processes of cellulosic textiles.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Almost 50 years ago, the 1950–1960 period witnessed the development of the chemistry underlying most of today’s successful and durable flame retardant treatments for fibres and textiles. In today’s more critical markets in terms of environmental sustainability, chemical toxicological acceptability, performance and cost, many of these are now being questioned. “Are there potential replacements for established, durable formaldehyde-based flame retardants such as those based on tetrakis (hydroxylmethyl) phosphonium salt and alkyl-substituted, N-methylol phosphonopropionamide chemistries for cellulosic textiles?” is an often-asked question. “Can we produce char-forming polyester flame retardants?” and “Can we really produce effective halogen-free replacements for coatings and back-coated textiles?” are others.These questions are addressed initially as a historical review of research undertaken in the second half of the twentieth century which is the basis of most currently available, commercialised flame retardant fibres and textiles. Research reported during the first decade of the twenty first century and which primarily addresses the current issues of environmental sustainability and the search for alternative flame retardant solutions, the need to increase char-forming character in synthetic fibres and the current interest in nanotechnology is critically discussed. The possible roles of micro- and nano-surface treatments of fibre surfaces and their development using techniques such as plasma technology are also reviewed.

Abstract:Flame retardants mitigate the threat of fire from inherently flammable materials responsible for sustaining a high standard of living. Although bulk flame retardants have proven effective for many years, there is now increased interest in the use of surface treatments to localize flame-retardant chemistry at the exterior of a material, where combustion occurs, in an effort to preserve desirable bulk properties and minimize the amount of additive needed. This Review provides a historical overview that leads to the most promising surface treatments that will help pave the way for developing more effective and non-intrusive flame retardants in the future. The way in which a fire transpires, and the various chemistries and mechanisms used to counteract fire propagation, are discussed. Challenges that remain to improve current flame-retardant surface treatments are also addressed, as the success of these treatments depends on the scalability, durability and ability to impart desired functionality without conferring environmental problems.

Abstract:A new flame retardant was synthesized with epichlorohydrin and phosphorus oxychloride and urea as raw materials. There are phosphor, nitrogen and chlorine in the flame retardant. Polyester or cotton fabrics finished with the flame retardant has excellent flame retardant property which can reach grade B1 according to GB/T 17595—1998. Polyester fabrics finished only with the flame retardant have half durable flame retardant property. Especially, polyester or cotton fabrics finished with the flame retardant and cross linking agent has durable flame retardant property. The flame retardant has little affection on strength, color and hand feeling of fabrics.

Abstract:Seven different types of flame-retarding finishes were applied to light-to-medium weight cotton fabric at add-ons appropriate to pass the DOC FF 3–71 test. The finishes studied were based on tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium chloride (THPC), neutralized THPC (THPOH), Fyrol 76, and Pyrovatex CP. The specific finishes were: THPOH-NH 3 , THPOH-urea-trimethylolmelamine, Proban (THPC-urea precondensate)-NH 3 , THPC-urea-disodium hydrogen phosphate, Fyrol 76, Fyrol 76-N-methylolacrylamide, and Pyrovatex CP-methylolmelamine. Textile performance properties are reported as a function of add-on of each type of finish; strengths and abrasion resistance of the finished fabrics are considered and discussed as a function of resilience. General trends of decreasing strength and abrasion resistance with increasing resilience were observed for these flame-retardant fabrics. Within this trend there is latitude for selection of finishes that will provide superior performance in the individual textile property such as abrasion resistance, breaking strength, and tearing strength.

Abstract:The currently available heat and flame resistant textiles are reviewed. These fall into two groups, each of which is based on the use of non-thermoplastic fibres as the major fibre component. The first group consists of flame retarded cellulosic, wool and certain man-made fibre-containing fabrics which are well established in various markets, have moderate to high heat and flame resistance and are available at reasonable cost. Performance limitations are determined by stability of the chars produced following interaction of the flame retardants and the fibre when heated. The second group relies on the exploitation of the inherent heat and flame resistance of aromatic and carbonized fibres which form chars with superior mechanical stabilities, and hence barrier properties, compared with the first group. However, fibres within this group are expensive, often difficult to process and, from an environmental point of view, difficult to recycle.Thermoplastic fibres such as polyester, polypropylene and polyamide, even when flame retarded using either comonomeric, modifications or additives introduced during polymerisation and/or fibre extrusion stages, melt drip and/or form holes when exposed to flame. They cannot, therefore, be used in applications, such as protective clothing and barrier textiles, where sustained thermal protection via char formation is an essential requirement.The mechanism and role of char formation are discussed and the incorporation of intumescents in textile materials explored. Recent developments have shown that combinations of flame retarded char-forming fibres and intumescents may give rise to a consolidated fibrous char-reinforced intumescent char which exhibits enhanced heat and flame resistance compared to individual chars. These interactive fibre-intumescent combinations offer opportunities for creating high performance barrier textiles based on more conventional, cost effective and environmentally acceptable raw materials.

Abstract:<p>Synthetic textiles make a great contribution as the apparel, industrial and technical textile goods, though most of them are inherently flammable. Thus, the fire retardant treatment of synthetic textile materials always puts a huge significance to deal with; meanwhile the art of flame retardant application is taking a new shape globally considering the modification of the textile surfaces as well as the structure of applied flame retardant compounds. Thus, this review depicts the fire retardant treatment of some common synthetic textiles like polyamide 66 (PA66), polyamide 6 (PA6), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) etc. focusing on the traditional approaches as well as the recent practices. In addition, this article aims to be established as a kind of general review that summarizes all relevant works carried out till the date with a view to realize the growing trend of this field in terms of applied compounds and application techniques and try to discover their impacts on anti-dripping, fire and thermal behaviors. In this review, it is seen that the very common drawbacks of most of the synthetic textiles are the melt-dripping and limited charring. Thus, to overcome these phenomena, in many instances, researchers adopt the surface modification technique prior to the final finishing in attaining the fire retardant behaviors. This kind of surface engineering usually using some epoxidized and acyrated aliphatic chains surely modifies the flame retardant and combustion behaviors where some improvements in the reduction of the peak heat release rate (pHRR) and a significant increase in char yield% are realized. In addition, this kind of modification also seems to be much effective in stopping the melt-dripping phenomenon of synthetic textiles. In parallel, it is noticed that the researchers also take initiative to modify the chemical structure of applied flame retardant compounds; especially they do incorporate several flame retardant elements like phosphorus (P), nitrogen (N), silicon (Si) and boron (B) etc. in a single structure to intensify the fire retardant efficacy of the same. For example, some of these compounds are effective both in the condensed and gas phase flame retardant mechanism or in some cases, some structures can enhance the limited charring of synthetic textile materials or can provide thermal stability of these char residues via providing a physical barrier effect due to their synergistic involvement in a typical flame retardant system and thus, an optimum level of flame retardancy are realized for the treated textiles. So, it is thus indispensable to realize the physio-chemical interactions between the polymeric structures (i.e., textiles) and the applied flame retardant compounds to design the future fire retardant treatment through selecting a right compound and an appropriate application method for a typical textile material. From this point of view, this review is a significant work to focus on some key flame retardant and combustion parameters like limiting oxygen index (LOI) values, vertical burning test (VBT) and peak heat release rate (pHRR) data along with an exploration of the flame retardant mechanism and durability issues of such applications.</p>

Abstract:Among the synthetic polymeric textiles, Nylon (Polyamide) textiles (Nylon66/Nylon 6) are one of the most widely used materials, especially as apparel and industrial uses for their excellent properties, namely higher strength and good wear resistance. Unfortunately, due to their organic structures, they show the relative ease of burning, which poses a great risk to fire. For the flame retardant (FR) treatment of nylon textiles, several strategies have been developed throughout the years and the earlier studies show the enormous uses of petroleum-based flame retardant compounds via energy intensive application methods. However, the rapid improvement in living standards as well as the recent call for a reduction of environmental impacts during manufacturing and use have been pushed researchers to come up with environmentally benign chemistries and processes. Therefore, the challenges in search of the most sustainable, efficient and durable flame retardant treatments for nylon textiles still remain as a hot topic to be addressed. This chapter discusses the eco-friendly approaches that have been taken in escalating the fire performance of these novel nylon textiles, especially focusing on the applied compounds and the application techniques along with the durability issues of such applications.

Abstract:After the period of halogenated compounds, the period of nano-structured systems, and that of phosphorus (and nitrogen)-based additives (still in progress), following the increasingly demanding circular economy concept, about ten years ago the textile flame retardant world started experiencing the design and exploitation of bio-sourced products. Indeed, since the demonstration of the potential of such bio(macro)molecules as whey proteins, milk proteins (i.e., caseins), and nucleic acids as effective flame retardants, both natural and synthetic fibers and fabrics can take advantage of the availability of several low-environmental impact/"green" compounds, often recovered from wastes or by-products, which contain all the elements that typically compose standard flame-retardant recipes. The so-treated textiles often exhibit flame-retardant features that are similar to those provided by conventional fireproof treatments. Further, the possibility of using the same deposition techniques already available in the textile industry makes these products very appealing, considering that the application methods usually do not require hazardous or toxic chemicals. This review aims to present an overview of the development of bio-sourced flame retardants, focusing attention on the latest research outcomes, and finally discussing some current challenging issues related to their efficient application, paving the way toward further future implementations.

Abstract:The use of natural and synthetic textile materials in various industries is significant, but their flammability poses a risk in case of fire accidents. These textile materials contain a significant amount of carbon and hydrogen in their structure, which can act as fuel for combustion. As a result, these textile materials can be hazardous in the event of a fire accident. Therefore, the application of fire-retardant treatments to textile materials has great importance to mitigate fire risks. Despite the availability of numerous effective flame retardants for textile applications, there is a need to develop new environmentally friendly flame-retardant agents and treatments that are both effective and environmentally friendly. The application of flame-retardant compounds is evolving globally, considering modifications to textile surfaces and the use of environmentally friendly materials. Thus, this review focuses on the functionalization of textile materials with bio-based and eco-friendly flame retardants and reviews recent studies on the use of compounds such as phytic acid, lignin, eggshell, gelatin, chitosan, nanosized/nanomaterial, and phosphorus-containing flame retardants on natural and synthetic textiles. The review highlights bio-based and eco-friendly approaches and improvement of flame-retardant efficiency of textiles through synergistic interaction of phosphorus with other environmentally acceptable elements like nitrogen and silicon.

Abstract:Poly- and cyclophosphazenes are excellent flame retardants but currently, are not used as textile finishing agents because water-soluble and permanent washing systems are missing. Here, we demonstrate for the first time, the successful usage of a water-soluble cyclotriphosphazene derivative for textile finishing for cotton, different cotton/polyester, and cotton/polyamide blend fabrics. A durable finish was achieved using a photoinduced grafting reaction. The flame retardant properties of the various fabrics were improved with a higher limiting oxygen index, a reduced heat release rate, and an exhibition of intumescent. Furthermore, the finished textiles passed several standardized flammability tests.
A durable flame retardant for cellulosic fabrics

Abstract:A novel halogen- and formaldehyde-free flame retardant named Neo-FR was synthesized and applied to cellulosic fabrics. The chemical structure of the flame retardant was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The flame retardant performance was evaluated by Limiting oxygen index (LOI) and vertical flammability tests. The results indicated that the flame retardant had excellent flame retardancy and durability for cellulosic fabrics. The surface morphology of treated fibre and fibre char residue were observed through scanning electron microscope (SEM). The SEM graphs demonstrated that the Neo-FR system played intumescent flame retarding mechanism on cotton fibre. The thermal property of the flame retardant treated cotton fabric was investigated through thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The results indicated that char residue of the treated fabrics was about 36.5%, which was much higher than that of untreated fabric. The mechanical properties such as tensile strength and elongation of the cotton samples treated with Neo-FR system were much less affected than those treated by a commercial durable flame retardant agent (Pyrovatex CP New). The laundering test results show that the Neo-FR system is a durable flame retardant for cellulosic fabrics.

Abstract:It is well known that bacterial infections and fire-hazards are potentially injurious in daily life. With the increased security awareness of life and properties as well as the improvement of living standards, there has been an increasing demand for multifunctional textiles with flame retardant and antibacterial properties, especially in the fields of home furnishing and medical protection. So far, various treatment methods, including the spray method, the dip-coating method, and the pad-dry-cure method, have been used to apply functional finishing agents onto fabrics to achieve the functionalization in the past exploration stage. Moreover, in addition to the traditional finishing technology, a number of novel technologies have emerged, such as layer-by-layer (LBL) deposition, the sol-gel process, and chemical grafting modification. In addition, some natural biomasses, including chitin, chitosan (CS), and several synthetic functional compounds that possess both flame-retardant and bacteriostatic properties, have also received extensive attention. Hence, this review focuses on introducing some commonly used finishing technologies and flame retardant/antibacterial agents. At the same time, the advantages and disadvantages of different methods and materials were summarized, which will contribute to future research and promote the development and progress of the industry.

Imparting cotton textiles glow-in-the-dark property along with other functional properties: photochromism, flame-retardant, water-repellency, and antimicrobial activity

Abstract:Screen-printing and spray-coating methods were used to produce photoluminescent, water-repellent, and antimicrobial films on textile fibers. The cotton fabrics were firstly finished with a flame-resistant agent. There are a number of functional agents that have been applied during the textile finishing process, including strontium aluminate pigment as antibacterial and photoluminescent agent, flame-retardant organophosphate, and water-repellent silicone rubber. The current research investigated the surface morphologies and chemical compositions of the screen-printed and spray-coated fabric cottons using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WDXRF), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). According to morphological analysis, the phosphor nanoparticles had sizes ranging from 2 to 12 nm. After excitation at 399 nm, the generated colorless photoluminescent layer deposited onto cotton surface showed an emission profile at 516 nm. The luminescence spectra and CIE Lab characteristics confirmed that the phosphor-coated textiles displayed a white color in visible spectrum and green emission in the presence of UV light. It has been shown by analysis that the tested colors are very stable over time. The measurements of static water contact and sliding angles were also explored. The self-extinguishing activity of the coated fabrics retained their flame-retardant properties over 24 laundry cycles. Antimicrobial activity, hydrophobicity, and luminous properties were improved without affecting the intrinsic physical and mechanical features of the treated textiles. Details on the CIE Lab colorimetric measurements were discussed. The stiffness and air permeability were examined to explore the flexibility and breathability of the treated textile fibers. Excellent reversibility and photostability were seen in the phosphor-coated materials.

Abstract:Journal of Fire Sciences, Ahead of Print. Polymeric textile materials, now, find extensive application in modern society than previously imagined, particularly in protective clothing. The application of these polymeric materials has been restricted by their flammability and contribution to fire risk. Flame retarding compounds and inherent flame-retardant materials have been introduced to reduce and even halt the flammability of polymers. However, over time, flame retardants tend to leach out of materials. The exposure of polymer textile to varying heat intensities may trigger polymer and flame retardant's volatilization and thermal degradation. Firefighters may be exposed to toxic chemicals through the volatilization of flame-retardant compounds from the bunker gear. Flame retardant's volatilization is associated with thermal degradation of the flame-retardant chemical compounds in the textile material. This review focuses on volatilization of flame retardants from protective textile materials resulting from exposure to heat and seeks to provide the necessary understanding about the release of flame retardants from flame-retardant textiles, particularly firefighting garments.

Abstract:Durable flame-retardant treatments based on a vinyl phosphonate oligomer or Thps were applied to cotton, cotton/polyester, cotton/wool, and cotton/polyester/wool medium-weight twill fabrics. The treatments were applied by either a pad, dry, cure process or a two-step procedure consisting of a pad, dry, cure application of DMDHEU followed by a Thps-NH 3 cure process. Flammability of the treated fabrics was evaluated by a number of tests, including burning rate, vertical char length, oxygen index, and a flame-extinguishment test. Physical properties were determined by standard tests to measure breaking strength, wrinkle recovery, stiffness, durable- press rating and shrinkage due to laundering.
