The way in which the duration of gestation affects infant loss in women of different ages.

Abstract:Shortened gestation periods reach maximum levels at the extremes of the childbearing period and are minimal at 25-29 years. Prolonged pregnancy is common in very young women and decreases with advancing maternal age. Mortality risk is lowest in women under 20 and rises with advancing age. Ages 20-29 are most favorable for childbearing. Over the age of 30 mothers show a progressive tendency toward early delivery but there is a consistent rise in the mortality ratio. Women aged 30-34 years lose their babies 50% more often than those in the optimal 20-24 year age group. Information was not available about gestation in 5.9% of 30-34 year old mothers nor in 16.6% of those under age 20. This high ratio in younger women was associated with the higher incidence of prenuptial conception.
