Abstract:New applications of technology have the potential to support learning across the curriculum, and allow effective communication between teachers and learners in ways that have not been possible before. Problems arise when teachers are expected to implement changes in what may well be adverse circumstances. To identify key factors which are barriers to using Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in education, this chapter describes some of the diverse influences on practising teachers. The chapter suggests some factors which may support teachers as users of ICT, including a model for understanding and evaluating the position of teachers as they move from uptake to proficiency. The context for many teachers attempting to assimilate ICT into their practice has been lack of appropriate equipment, training, and time to evaluate new applications. The benefits ICT offers to all learners have at last been extended to those most essential to the success of all the exciting and visionary proposals: teachers.
