Abstract:Indoor Positioning System (IPS) is a system for locating the position of a person or object in a room. Unlike the Global Positioning System (GPS), which uses satellites to determine position, IPS uses objects in a room such as Bluetooth or WiFi. The WiFi signal strength can be used to determine the distance between a receiver (a device) and a sender of the signal (a device locator) using the signal propagation model. The trilateration technique is the typical model to find the position of an object. The technique locates a device using three distances from three points whose coordinates are known. The drawback of the technique is often inaccurately due to WiFi signal strength fluctuation. We use the Kalman filter to reduce the instability of WiFi signals by predicting the internal state of the fluctuating signals. More stable signals result in more accurate distance measurements and thus more accurate location prediction.
