Abstract:Ghost imaging is an indirect system that allows the imaging of an object without directly seeing the object. The speckle pattern that contains the information about light and objects has increasingly become a popular topic in pseudothermal light ghost imaging. However, existing research still has encountered problems of poor imaging quality and slow sampling speeds. We propose a ghost imaging method based on N-order speckle patterns to recover the object (NSGI). The N-order speckle patterns combine N independent laser speckles individually produced by passing an expanded and collimated He-Ne laser through a digital micro-mirror device (DMD). The sampling frequency can be improved by controlling the trigger signals of different DMDs. The results of the simulation and experiment have verified that our method can increase sampling speed and reconstruction accuracy. In addition, NSGI can be applied to more applications by designing multiple independent speckles with different properties. (C) 2018 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE).

Abstract: A simple and robust experiment demonstrating computational ghost imaging with structured illumination and a single-pixel detector has been performed. Our experimental setup utilizes a general computer for generating pseudo-randomly patterns on the liquid crystal display screen to illuminate a partially-transmissive object. With an incoherent light source, this object is imaged. The effects of light source, light path, and the number of measurements on the reconstruction quality of the object are discussed both theoretically and experimentally. The realization of computational ghost imaging with computer liquid crystal display is a further setup toward the practical application of ghost imaging with ordinary incoherent light.

Abstract:We outline and experimentally demonstrate a method to image pure phase objects using traditional quantum ghost imaging with single pixel detectors. We provide a theoretical description of the process, showing how phase information is embedded in the correlation measurements of spatially entangled photon pairs in which only one of the pair interacts with the object. Using pairs of digital projective masks, one amplitude-only and one phase-only, we reconstruct two partial phase images of the object. Using both these images, we can retrieve the full detailed phase profile of the object without ambiguity, which we demonstrate on objects exhibiting phase steps and gradients.

Quantified Advantage of Ghost Imaging over Regular Imaging

Abstract:Ghost imaging is a remarkable technique where light that never interacts with an object is detected with a camera and still the image of the object is recorded. The method relies on the use of correlated light and an additional bucket detector. Ghost imaging has been used in archaeology, bio-medicine, for seeing through turbid media, and promises X-ray imaging improvements, amongst many other applications. However, the advantage of ghost imaging over regular imaging can be difficult to quantify. For classical ghost imaging of a single pixel aperture (the object), we find a closed analytic expression for the signal-to-noise ratio using basic statistics. We find that this signal-to-noise ratio can exceed that of regular imaging with the same exposure of the aperture when the detectors are sufficiently noisy, illustrating a simple and quantifiable advantage. Numerical simulation confirms the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:Real-time computational ghost imaging (CGI) has received significant attention in recent years to overcome the trade-off between long acquisition time and high reconstructed image quality of CGI. Inspired by compound eyes, we propose a parallel computational ghost imaging with modulation patterns multiplexing and permutation to achieve a faster and high-resolution CGI. With modulation patterns multiplexing and permutation, several small overlapping fields-of-view can be obtained; meanwhile, the difficulty in alignment of illumination light field and multiple detectors can be well resolved. The method combining compound eyes with multi-detectors to capture light intensity can resolve the issue of a gap between detector units in the array detector. Parallel computation facilitates significantly reduced acquisition time, while maintaining reconstructed quality without compromising the sampling ratio. Experiments indicate that using m × m detectors reduce modulation pattern count, projector storage, and projection time to around 1/m2 of typical CGI methods, while increasing image resolution to m2 times. This work greatly promotes the practicability of parallel computational ghost imaging and provides optional solution for real-time computational ghost imaging.

Abstract:We establish a quantum theory of computational ghost imaging and propose quantum projection imaging where object information can be reconstructed by quantum statistical correlation between a certain photon number of bucket signal and DMD random patterns. The reconstructed image can be negative or positive depending on the chosen photon number. In particular, the vacuum state (zero-number) projection produces a negative image with better visibility and contrast-to-noise ratio. The experimental results of quantum projection imaging agree well with theoretical simulations and show that, under the same measurement condition, vacuum projection imaging is superior to conventional and fast first-photon ghost imaging in low-light illumination.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a novel ghost imaging experiment utilizing a classical light source,capable of resolving objects with a high visibility.The experimental results show that our scheme can indeed realize ghost imaging with high visibility for a relatively complicated object composed of three near-ellipse-shaped holes with different dimensions.In our experiment,the largest hole is ~36 times of the smallest one in area.Each of the three holes exhibits high-visibility in excess of 80%.The high visibility and high spatial-resolution advantages of this technique could have applications in remote sensing.

Abstract:The underwater environment is extremely complex and variable, which makes it difficult for underwater robots detecting or recognizing surroundings using images acquired with cameras. Ghost imaging as a new imaging technique has attracted much attention due to its special physical properties and potential for imaging of objects in optically harsh or noisy environments. In this work, we experimentally study three categories of image reconstruction methods of ghost imaging for objects of different transmittance. For high-transmittance objects, the differential ghost imaging is more efficient than traditional ghost imaging. However, for low-transmittance objects, the reconstructed images using traditional ghost imaging and differential ghost imaging algorithms are both exceedingly blurred and cannot be improved by increasing the number of measurements. A compressive sensing method named augmented Lagrangian and alternating direction algorithm (TVAL3) is proposed to reduce the background noise imposed by the low-transmittance. Experimental results show that compressive ghost imaging can dramatically subtract the background noise and enhance the contrast of the image. The relationship between the quality of the reconstructed image and the complexity of object itself is also discussed.

Abstract:Single photon detection and timing gathered increasing interest in the last few years due to both its necessity in the field of quantum sensing and the advantages of single quanta detection in the field of low level light imaging. While simple bucket detectors are mature enough for commercial applications, more complex imaging detectors are still a field of research with mostly prototype level detectors. A major problem in these detectors is the implementation of in-pixel timing circuitry, especially for two-dimensional imagers. One of the most promising approaches is the use of voltage controlled ring resonators in every pixel. Each of those is running independently, based on a voltage supplied by a global reference. However, this yields the problem that across the chip the supply voltage can change, which in turn changes the period of the ring resonator. Due to additional parasitic effects, this problem can worsen with increasing measurement time, leading to a drift of the timing information. We present here a method to identify and correct such temporal drifts of single photon detectors, based on asynchronous quantum ghost imaging. We also show the effect of this correction on a recent QGI measurement from our group.

Abstract:Ghost imaging can capture 2D images with a point detector instead of an array sensor. It therefore offers a solution to the challenge of building area format sensors in wavebands where such sensors are difficult and expensive to produce and opens up new imaging modalities due to high-performance single-pixel detectors. Traditionally, ghost imaging retrieves the image of an object offline, by correlating measured light intensities and applied illuminating patterns. Here we present a feedback-based approach for online updating of the imaging result that can bypass post-processing, termed self-evolving ghost imaging (SEGI). We introduce a genetic algorithm to optimize the illumination patterns in real-time to match the objects shape according to the measured total light intensity. We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate this concept for static and dynamic imaging. This method opens new perspectives for real-time ghost imaging in applications such as remote sensing (e.g. machine vision, LiDAR systems in autonomous vehicles) and biological imaging.

Abstract:Ghost imaging can be implemented with illumination light with pronounced quantum characters. In this work, we address the inverse problem of ghost imaging, i.e., the tomography of the quantum states of illumination light based on ghost imaging. We showcase the characterization of multimode Gaussian state light represented by its covariance matrix. With the information of spatial modes, we reconstruct the quantum states of light using the variation of SNR of the ghost images formed by the input light under a given set of optical operations. We demonstrate that ghost imaging can also be used to characterize the non-Gaussian light by its deviation from Gaussian states, which can serve as a criterion for the non-Gaussianity of the input light. The spatial resolving power of the proposed method can be advantageous for quantum information applications involving structured light, such as multiplexing with spatial modes. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.20.044001 © 2023 American Physical Society
