Abstract:From metamaterials to metasurfaces, optical nano-structure has been widely investigated for novel and high efficiency functionalities. Apart from the intrisinsic properties of composite material, rich capabilities can be derived from the judicious design of metasurfaces, which enable more excellent and highly integrated optical devices than traditional bulk optical elements. In the meantime, the abundant manipulation abilites of light in the classical domain can be carried over into quantum domain. In this review, we highlight recent development of quantum optics based on metasurfaces, ranging from quantum plasmonics, generation, manipulation and appplication of quantum light to quantum vaccum engineering etc. Finally, some promising avenues for quantum optics with the help of optical metasurface are presented.
Anisotropic Mode Excitations and Enhanced Quantum Interference in Quantum Emitter-Metasurface Coupled Systems

Abstract:This study proposes a nanophotonic structure that supports quantum interference (QI) between orthogonal decay channels in multilevel quantum emitters within the framework of the quantum master equation. The Green functions of the electric field are obtained by applying boundary conditions in the presence of two-dimensional metasurfaces. We demonstrate distinct in-plane excitation features of the surface plasmon modes (SPMs) with the anisotropic metasurfaces tailored to conductivity components. In particular, we observed that the Purcell factor of transitions with orthogonal polarizations experiences unequal enhancements, owing to the anisotropic propagation of the SPMs. This property depends only on the anisotropy of the metasurfaces; thus, it is easily manipulated. Using this platform and considering experimentally achievable material parameters, we predict a strong interference effect in three-level quantum emitters. In principle, this enables the generation of maximum QI. Our study provides a method for realizing QI systems and has potential applications in highly integrated, tuneable quantum devices.

Abstract:Optical metasurfaces, i.e., subwavelength planar nanostructures, have attracted increasing attention due to their unprecedented capabilities of molding classical light and revolutionized conventional optics by replacing bulky optical components with ultrathin, lightweight, and ultracompact meta-optics. In addition to controlling classical light, meta-optics demonstrate the potential to efficiently manipulate nonclassical light and start to enter the realm of quantum photonics. Here, we briefly overview recent advances in quantum meta-optics for generation and manipulation of nonclassical light, highlighting innovative approaches, and discuss future opportunities in this burgeoning area, ranging from fundamental research to practical applications.

Abstract:Rapid progress in the development of metasurfaces allowed to replace bulky optical assemblies with thin nanostructured films, often called metasurfaces, opening a broad range of novel and superior applications to the generation, manipulation, and detection of light in classical optics. Recently, these developments started making a headway in quantum photonics, where novel opportunities arose for the control of nonclassical nature of light, including photon statistics, quantum state superposition, quantum entanglement, and single-photon detection. In this Perspective, we review recent progress in the field of quantum-photonics applications of metasurfaces, focusing on innovative and promising approaches to create, manipulate, and detect nonclassical light.

Abstract:Nanoscale quantum optics explores quantum phenomena in nanophotonics systems for advancing fundamental knowledge in nano and quantum optics and for harnessing the laws of quantum physics in the development of new photonics-based technologies. Here, we review recent progress in the field with emphasis on four main research areas: Generation, detection, manipulation and storage of quantum states of light at the nanoscale, nonlinearities and ultrafast processes in nanostructured media, nanoscale quantum coherence, cooperative effects, correlations and many-body physics tailored by strongly confined optical fields. The focus is both on basic developments and technological implications, especially concerning information and communication technology, sensing and metrology, and energy efficiency.

Abstract:Quantum metaphotonics has emerged as a cutting-edge subfield of meta-optics employing subwavelength resonators and their planar structures such as metasurfaces to generate, manipulate, and detect quantum states of light. It holds a great potential for the miniaturization of current bulky quantum optical elements by developing a design of on-chip quantum systems for various applications of quantum technologies. Over the past few years, this field has witnessed a surge of intriguing theoretical ideas, groundbreaking experiments, and novel application proposals. This perspective paper aims to summarize the most recent advancements and also provide a perspective on the further progress in this rapidly developing field of research.

Abstract:Metasurfaces mold the flow of classical light waves by engineering sub-wavelength patterns from dielectric or metallic thin films. We describe and analyze a method in which quantum operator-valued reflectivity can be used to control both spatio-temporal and quantum properties of transmitted and reflected light. Such a quantum metasurface is realized by preparing and manipulating entangled superposition states of atomically thin reflectors. Specifically, we show that such a system allows for massively parallel quantum operations between atoms and photons and for the generation of highly non-classical states of light, including photonic GHZ and cluster states suitable for quantum information processing. We analyze the influence of imperfections and decoherence, as well as specific implementations based on atom arrays excited into Rydberg states. Finally, the extension to quantum metamaterials and emulations of quantum gravitational background for light are discussed.

Abstract:Advanced metasurface‐based optical field manipulation techniques are currently being used in the field of quantum precision measurement, providing new opportunities for low‐cost, high‐performance, multifunctional miniature quantum sensors. This review summarizes the latest advances and potential applications of optical field modulation techniques in quantum precision measurement, and discusses the challenges and prospects of metasurface development. Metasurface‐based optical field manipulation has significantly broadened the application range of micro‐optical components and integrated optics, gradually replacing bulky and complicated optical components. With the continuous development of micro and nano processing technology as well as computational analysis technology, metasurfaces have progressively shown their superior application prospects. After demonstrating tremendous results in classical optical applications, their application range has now extended to the field of quantum sensing. Due to their unique properties, such as small planar size, easy integration, flexible performance design, and tunable functionality, they have opened up a series of novel and rich applications for generating, manipulating, controlling, and detecting optical fields. In this paper, the basic principle and implementation of quantum measurement are presented and an overview of the design principles of metasurfaces, along with a summary of the latest advancements and potential applications of these surfaces in optical field modulation techniques for quantum precision measurement. Additionally, a thorough discussion and analysis of the challenges encountered by metasurfaces and their future development prospects is provided. Metasurfaces offer brand‐new opportunities for low‐cost, high‐performance, multifunctional miniaturized quantum sensors and are expected to play a significant role in the development of next‐generation quantum sensors.

Abstract:Optical metasurfaces open new avenues for precise wavefront control of light for integrated quantum technology. Here, we demonstrate a hybrid integrated quantum photonic system that is capable to entangle and disentangle two-photon spin states at a dielectric metasurface. By interfering single-photon pairs at a nanostructured dielectric metasurface, a path-entangled two-photon NOON state with circular polarization is generated that exhibits a quantum HOM interference visibility of 86 $\pm$ 4%. Furthermore, we demonstrate nonclassicality and phase sensitivity in a metasurface-based interferometer with a fringe visibility of 86.8 $\pm$ 1.1 % in the coincidence counts. This high visibility proves the metasurface-induced path entanglement inside the interferometer. Our findings provide a promising way to hybrid-integrated quantum technology with high-dimensional functionalities in various applications like imaging, sensing, and computing.

Abstract:Photons for quantum technologies have been identified early on as a very good candidate for carrying quantum information encoded onto them, either by polarization encoding, time encoding or spatial encoding. Quantum cryptography, quantum communications, quantum networks in general and quantum computing are some of the applications targeted by what is now called quantum photonics. Nevertheless, it was pretty clear at an early stage that bulk optics for handling quantum states of light with photons would not be able to deliver what is needed for these technologies. More recently, single photons, entangled photons and quantum optics in general have been coupled to more integrated approaches coming from classical optics in order to meet the requirements of scalability, reliablility and efficiency for quantum technologies. In this article, we develop our recent advances in two different nanophotonic platforms for quantum photonics using elongated optical fibers and integrated glass waveguides made by the so-called ion-exchange technique. We also present our latest results on quantum nanoemitters that we plan to couple and incorporate with our photonics platforms. These nanoemitters are of two kinds: nanocrystals made of perovskites as well as silicon-vacancy defect centers in nanodiamonds. Some of their properties are developed in this work. We will then give the general steps necessary in order to couple these nanoemitters efficiently with our platforms in the near future.

Abstract:Going quantum with metamaterials Metasurfaces should allow wafer-thin surfaces to replace bulk optical components. Two reports now demonstrate that metasurfaces can be extended into the quantum optical regime. Wang et al. determined the quantum state of multiple photons by simply passing them through a dielectric metasurface, scattering them into single-photon detectors. Stav et al. used a dielectric metasurface to generate entanglement between spin and orbital angular momentum of single photons. Quantum Imaging Using Spatially Entangled Photon Pairs from a Nonlinear Metasurface

Abstract:Nonlinear metasurfaces with subwavelength thickness were recently established as versatile platforms for the enhanced and tailorable generation of entangled photon pairs. The small dimensions and inherent stability of integrated metasurface sources are attractive for free-space applications in quantum communications, sensing, and imaging, yet this remarkable potential remained unexplored. Here, we formulate and experimentally demonstrate the unique benefits and practical potential of nonlinear metasurfaces for quantum imaging at infrared wavelengths, facilitating an efficient protocol combining ghost and all-optical scanning imaging. The metasurface incorporates a subwavelength-scale silica metagrating on a lithium niobate thin film. Its distinguishing feature is the capability to all-optically scan the photon emission angle in the direction across the grating simply by tuning the pump beam wavelength. Simultaneously, the photon emission is broad and anti-correlated along the grating direction, allowing for ghost imaging. Thereby, we reconstruct the images of 2D objects using just a 1D detector array in the idler path and a bucket detector in the signal path, by recording the dependencies of photon coincidences on the pump wavelength. Our results reveal new possibilities for quantum imaging with ultra-large field of view and improved imaging resolution as compared to photon pairs from conventional bulky crystals. The demonstrated concept can be extended to multi-wavelength operation and other applications such as quantum object tracking, paving the way for advancements in quantum technologies using ultra-compact nanostructured metasurfaces.

A spatial light modulator selectively excites different sets of metalenses to carry out the quantum algorithms, while the photon arrival data or interference patterns captured by a single photon camera are used to extract information about the output state. Our programmable quantum metasurface approach holds potential as a cost-effective means of miniaturizing components for quantum computing and information processing.

Abstract:Engineering the optical properties using artificial nanostructured media known as metamaterials has led to breakthrough devices with capabilities from super-resolution imaging to invisibility. In this article, we review metamaterials for quantum nanophotonic applications, a recent development in the field. This seeks to address many challenges in the field of quantum optics using recent advances in nanophotonics and nanofabrication. We focus on the class of nanostructured media with hyperbolic dispersion that have emerged as one of the most promising metamaterials with a multitude of practical applications from subwavelength imaging, nanoscale waveguiding, biosensing to nonlinear switching. We present the various design and characterization principles of hyperbolic metamaterials and explain the most important property of such media: a broadband enhancement in the electromagnetic density of states. We review several recent experiments that have explored this phenomenon using spontaneous emission from dye molecules and quantum dots. We finally point to future applications of hyperbolic metamaterials of using the broadband enhancement in the spontaneous emission to construct single photon sources.

Abstract:Nanophotonics offers opportunities for engineering and exploiting the quantum properties of light by integrating quantum emitters into nanostructures, and offering reliable paths to quantum technology applications such as sources of quantum light or new quantum simulators, among many others. In this Review, we discuss common nanophotonic platforms for studying light–matter interactions, explaining their strengths and experimental state-of-the-art. Each platform works at a different interaction regime: from standard cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) setups to unique quantum nanophotonic devices, such as chiral and non-chiral waveguide QED experiments. When several quantum emitters are integrated into nanophotonic systems, collective interactions emerge, enabling miniaturized, versatile and fast-operating quantum devices. We conclude with a perspective on the near-term opportunities offered by nanophotonics in the context of quantum technologies.

Abstract:Metasurfaces arc optical elements that use two-dimensional planar microstructures to control the light field. In recent years, the research and application of mctasurfaccs in quantum optics have received more and more attention. The mctasurfacc is able to realize the miniaturization and integration of quantum devices. In addition, it can also improve the luminous efficiency and quality of quantum light sources. Based on the combination of quantum optics and mctasurfaccs, this article introduces the latest research and progress in five aspects, including quantum plasmonics, the use of mctasurfaccs to optimize quantum light sources, the use of mctasurfaccs to measure and manipulate quantum states, the application of quantum optics, and the quantum vacuum engineering of quantum emitters. Finally, some potential applications of mctasurfaccs were prospected.

Abstract:Metamaterials have been a major research area for more than two decades now, involving artificial structures with predesigned electromagnetic properties constructed from deep subwavelength building blocks. They have been used to demonstrate a wealth of fascinating phenomena ranging from negative refractive index and epsilon-near-zero to cloaking, emulations of general relativity effects, and super-resolution imaging, to name a few. In the past few years, metamaterials have been suggested as a new platform for quantum optics, and several pioneering experiments have already been carried out with single photons. Here, we employ a dielectric metasurface to generate entanglement between spin and orbital angular momentum of single photons. We demonstrate experimentally the generation of the four Bell states by utilizing the geometric phase arising from the photonic spin-orbit interaction. These are the first experiments with entangled states with metasurfaces, and as such they are paving the way to the new area of quantum metamaterials.

Recent Advances in Metasurface Design and Quantum Optics Applications with Machine Learning, Physics-Informed Neural Networks, and Topology Optimization Methods

Abstract:As a two-dimensional planar material with low depth profile, a metasurface can generate non-classical phase distributions for the transmitted and reflected electromagnetic waves at its interface. Thus, it offers more flexibility to control the wave front. A traditional metasurface design process mainly adopts the forward prediction algorithm, such as Finite Difference Time Domain, combined with manual parameter optimization. However, such methods are time-consuming, and it is difficult to keep the practical meta-atom spectrum being consistent with the ideal one. In addition, since the periodic boundary condition is used in the meta-atom design process, while the aperiodic condition is used in the array simulation, the coupling between neighboring meta-atoms leads to inevitable inaccuracy. In this review, representative intelligent methods for metasurface design are introduced and discussed, including machine learning, physics-information neural network, and topology optimization method. We elaborate on the principle of each approach, analyze their advantages and limitations, and discuss their potential applications. We also summarise recent advances in enabled metasurfaces for quantum optics applications. In short, this paper highlights a promising direction for intelligent metasurface designs and applications for future quantum optics research and serves as an up-to-date reference for researchers in the metasurface and metamaterial fields.
