Abstract:There is a shortage of personnel to provide care for older adults with dementia, and traditional teaching methods could be improved. The teaching method used in the Care for Older Adults With Dementia course is mainly theoretical, lacking real-life care scenarios and practical procedural training. In the current study, we developed a virtual reality (VR) teaching system and designed a randomized controlled trial aimed at testing the availability of the VR-assisted teaching system, filling the gap in teaching through care scenarios, enabling students majoring in intelligent health and oldage care service management to have a more positive attitude toward learning, and improving students' knowledge and course satisfaction. This study showed that the developed VR system can meet the initial needs of daily teaching, help students have a more positive attitude toward learning, and improve their academic performance and course satisfaction. Abstract:Objectives: Our objective was to develop and implement a system to solve the problems that students have as a result of few opportunities for consultation and hands-on exercise in nursing practice teaching, including an inability to participate in the whole process of patients' treatment and nursing, and lack of humanistic care for patients. Methods: The application of the system was conducted among undergraduate nursing students. In 2020, we cooperated with companies and jointly developed a virtual reality (VR) simulation of rehabilitation nursing for patients with cervical spondylosis (CS) and applied it to undergraduate nursing students. Results: The cumulative online training time of 79 students was (30.52±16.28) minutes/person and the average number of learning times was (3.12±1.78) times/person. Overall, 97.5% of the students rated the system as excellent. Conclusions: In thi s paper, we introduce the design, system construction, teaching design, and preliminary application effects of the system. In addition, we discuss the advantages, characteristics, limitations and countermeasures of the system, to provide reference for the construction of VR simulation experimental teaching courses for undergraduate nursing students under the background of new medical science.

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of this study is to develop a virtual reality simulation education program for nursing students to care for agitation (VRSEPforNSA) in patients with dementia). Method: The VRSEPforNSA was developed using the ADDIE model (analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation). Result: Analysis was performed using the nursing journal database from 2017 to 2021 with keyword of virtual reality, nursing, nursing education and program. Design was consisted based on the Jeffries’ 5E learning cycle model. VRSEPforNSA was developed with 3 stages: the assessment and care for agitation in patients with dementia, patient falls to floor, and back to bed in room. The VRSEPforNSA is run for a total of 100 minutes and the module is consisted of a pre-test, VR simulation running, debriefing, nursing record and reflection, and so on. Conclusion: There is a need to apply the VRSEPforNSA for senior nursing students and to test the effects on agitation care performance, self-efficacy and decision making.

Abstract:Core nursing skills are emphasized in nursing education, given their vital role in nurses' competence; however, invasive nursing procedures like catheterization and enemas are infrequently performed in actual clinical practice, primarily being observed rather than executed. Virtual reality simulation training involves performing core nursing skills on virtual patients in a three-dimensional virtual reality environment, following the correct procedures. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of VR simulation on nursing students' confidence, proficiency, task engagement, and satisfaction. The study participants included 76 second-year nursing students, with 37 in the VR group and 39 in the control group. The VR group engaged in immersive VR (IVR) training sessions including enemas, nasogastric feeding, and nelaton catheterization. Conversely, the control group practiced these skills using mannequins. Assessments evaluated confidence, proficiency, learning satisfaction, and task engagement before and after the intervention. The average age of the study participants was 21.07 years, with 78.95% being female and 21.05% being male. The study findings revealed no significant differences between the VR and control groups regarding confidence (F = 3.878, p = 0.053), task engagement (F = 0.164, p = 0.687), and learning satisfaction (F = 0.668, p = 0.416). However, the VR group demonstrated significantly higher proficiency in the overall assessment of nasogastric feeding (F = 5.389, p = 0.023) and core components of nelaton catheterization (F = 4.046, p = 0.048). The IVR program emerged as an effective and valuable teaching tool, particularly well-suited for second-year nursing students, significantly enhancing proficiency.

Abstract:BackgroundSimulation education is needed to train a highly competent nursing workforce. In-person simulation requires many resources, such as faculty, space, and time, that can negatively affect its feasibility. These barriers have prompted educators to seek new technologies to provide experiential learning opportunities, such as virtual simulation (VS). The COVID-19 pandemic further highlighted the need for educators to investigate alternative learning opportunities.MethodsA quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted with pre-licensure and advanced practice nursing students. They participated in a VS learning experience that was evaluated using the System Usability Scale (SUS)®, the Clinical Learning Environment Comparison Survey (CLECS 2.0), and the Simulation Effectiveness Tool-Modified (SET-M).Result197 pre-licensure and 11 advanced nursing practice students completed post-simulation evaluations. The results from the SUS scale found the overall virtual system effective. Evaluating the CLECS tool found students' perceived experience was relatively similar for face-to-face simulation and screen-based simulation. The SET-M indicated students rated the VS simulation experience positively.ConclusionVS for nursing education can be an effective experiential learning tool.

Abstract:Virtual reality simulation offers students the opportunity to acquire clinical and psychomotor skills in a safe and interactive environment. This study describes the usability of virtual reality simulation among undergraduate nursing and midwifery students. Participants were recruited using convenience and snowball sampling and engaged in a 20-minute virtual reality simulation scenario of their choice. They then completed a 21-item survey comprising a sociodemographic questionnaire, the System Usability Scale, a satisfaction questionnaire, and open-ended questions. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and qualitative data were analyzed using deductive content analysis. Forty-three students participated in this study. The mean (SD) System Usability Scale score was 75.87 (13.7), indicating that virtual reality simulation was acceptable. Almost all participants were either “extremely satisfied” or “somewhat satisfied” with virtual reality simulation, which was perceived as informative and enjoyable, fostering safe and self-directed learning without causing patient harm. Participants recommended using virtual reality simulation to practice clinical skills, prepare for clinical placements, and learn about rare clinical situations. Virtual reality simulation needs to be underpinned by a strong pedagogy and aligned with learning outcomes. Educators and students should be trained in virtual reality simulation prior to its integration into the curriculum.

Abstract:The use of simulation in the undergraduate nursing curriculum is gaining popularity and is becoming a foundation of many nursing programs. The purpose of this paper is to highlight a new simulation teaching strategy, virtual reality (VR) simulation, which capitalizes on the technological skills of the new generation student. This small-scale pilot study focused on improving interpersonal skills in senior level nursing students using VR simulation. In this study, a repeated-measure design was used to evaluate the effectiveness of VR simulation on improving student’s performance over a series of two VR scenarios. Using the Emergency Medicine Crisis Resource Management (EMCRM) tool, student performance was evaluated. Overall, the total EMCRM score improved but not significantly. The subscale areas of communication ( P = .047 , 95% CI: − 1.06 , − .007 ) and professional behavior ( P = .003 , 95% CI: − 1.12 , − .303 ) did show a significant improvement between the two scenario exposures. Findings from this study show the potential for virtual reality simulations to have an impact on nursing student performance.

Abstract:Background: Simulation, whether conducted live or through virtual technologies, provides students with experiential learning by replicating realistic clinical experiences that can develop learner competencies in a safe environment. Virtual reality simulation may provide the same level of effective and engaging experiential learning in a fully immersive learning environment without many of the limitations inherent to traditional live simulation environments, such as simulation equipment and designated labs. Problem: While there are vendor-provided resources and a new tool kit covering immersive technology simulation implementation in nursing, a lived example to contextualize the implementation process is missing from the literature. Approach: This article discusses the selection and implementation of virtual reality simulations in a nursing undergraduate program and lessons learned in the process. Conclusions: Nurse educators seeking such experiences for their students may benefit from the insights shared in this article.

Abstract:Nursing schools struggle to increase enrollments due to insufficient faculty and limitations in clinical site placements. New strategies must be employed to optimize learning, engage learners, and provide methods to ensure competency in future nursing graduates. A convenience sample of junior-level prelicensure nursing students (n = 48) were assigned to the immersive virtual reality (VR) group (n = 24) or the hospital-based group (n = 24). This mixed-methods quasi-experimental pilot study examined the effectiveness of an immersive VR simulation training program to replace pediatric clinical practice. The intervention group participated in immersive VR. The control group received the usual inpatient clinical training. Both groups then completed a traditional in-person simulation to compare performance outcomes. Performance scores for the immersive VR training group were significantly higher for total performance compared to the hospital-based training group. These preliminary results offer promise and demonstrate the potential of VR in the future of nursing education.

Exploring the experiences of nursing students in using immersive virtual reality to learn nursing skills

Abstract:Background: In recent years, virtual reality teaching applications exhibited exponential development in numerous fields. An increasing number of virtual reality application cases and modules have been developed in the nursing education field to verify their effectiveness. Objective: The research objective is to understand the experience of nursing students in using virtual reality skill learning process. Design: This study is a qualitative research that adopts focus group research methods. The participants were able to freely describe their subjective feelings toward the virtual reality skill learning process. Participants/settings: This research was conducted in a nursing school in Taiwan. Purposive sampling was adopted to select 60 nursing students who participated in the Adult Nursing and Practice course. The participants were divided into six focus groups containing 10 participants each. Method: Aside from learning with traditional practice equipment, the students also experienced the virtual reality nasogastric tube care skill learning system. Focus group interviews were held from March 25 to 27, 2019. During the interview, we inquired about the students' subjective feelings toward the virtual reality skill learning system and reflected on its influence on the students' learning process. Results: An analysis of the focus group interview content of 60 students, revealed that the students' experience toward the virtual reality skill learning process could be classified into five themes, namely "convenient to practice, but requires adaptation," "fast skill learning process," "stress-free learning environment," "environmentally friendly," and "lacks a sense of reality." Conclusions: Instead of replacing conventional skill teaching methods, future applications of the virtual reality nursing skill education support system shall serve as a student self-learning supporting tool. Additionally, the research and development of the virtual reality nursing skill education support system should focus on its stereognosis aspect and include an interactive function to upgrade the system into a practical teaching and learning support material.

Abstract:Introduction: With an increase in the aging population, the application of evidence-based practice in geriatric education can strengthen knowledge, skills, and clinical experience for healthcare students caring for older adults. The Age-Friendly Health System (AFHS) is one of the frameworks founded on providing evidence-based and low-risk care centered on what matters most to older adults, their families, and caregivers. Virtual reality (VR) platforms are gaining popularity due to their ability to provide an immersive, hands-on learning experience resembling an actual medical practice or care setting. Immersive learning enhances students' sensory perceptions, promoting an innovative and engaging way of acquiring concepts that are difficult to teach in real life. This study aimed to design, develop, implement, and evaluate a case-based training module highlighting AFHS and educating medical students on the 4Ms approach in geriatric care (What Matters, Medication, Mentation, and Mobility). Methodology: The project was a feasibility study completed in two phases. Phase one included planning and developing a case-based scenario incorporating the 4Ms of AFHS. Phase two included implementing and evaluating the VR training module into the geriatric curriculum for medical students. Results: The final VR case displays a hospital and post-acute setting where an elderly patient is admitted for a hip fracture. Students learn how to triage and treat patients from admission to discharge while demonstrating their knowledge of AFHSs. Approximately 10% of students completed the evaluation survey, and preliminary results indicate significant knowledge change in pre-post scenario-based training on an AFHS. Conclusions: The VR education platform and embedded scenario promise an innovative adaptation of technology in learning the concepts of the 4Ms of AFHSs. However, future studies should explore VR education with clinical assessment evaluation to ensure competence in providing age-friendly care.
Effectiveness of a virtual reality triage simulation program for nursing students: A mixed-methods study

Abstract:Aims: To examine the effectiveness of a virtual reality simulation (VRS) triage in improving students' learning motivation, attitudes, satisfaction and learning experiences in an emergency nursing course. Background: VR facilitates the realization of clinical scenarios that are significant for teaching emergency nursing. Triage presents a unique challenge in emergency nursing courses, where practical learning opportunities are seldom available. Design: The study employed a convergent parallel mixed-methods design. Methods: A total of 164 third-year nursing students were recruited from an emergency nursing course. The experimental group of 73 students participated in a VRS triage program and the control group of 91 students received a traditional program based on written case studies. The learning outcomes were evaluated using the Attention, Relevance, Confidence and Satisfaction motivational learning inventory together with questionnaires on learning attitudes and satisfaction. Qualitative data were collected through phenomenographic interviews. Results: The learning outcomes from the experimental group showed significant improvement in motivational learning inventory scores, with the greatest increase in satisfaction, followed by confidence, attention and relevance. Qualitative interviews with 30 students revealed four main themes in their learning experiences: "reflecting a real-world clinical environment," "enabling the internalization of knowledge," "enhancing clinical skills proficiency," and "cultivating a positive attitude toward patient care." The core theme was the establishment of professional core competency. Conclusions: VRS learning shows positive outcomes in enriching students' learning experiences. This study contributes to the literature on the use of VR technology in nursing education by offering insights into the effectiveness of VRS learning.
Development and assessment of a curriculum model for virtual simulation in nursing: curriculum development and pilot-evaluation

Abstract:Background: To introduce virtual simulation as a strategy of nursing education and provide valid educational content, the best curriculum model of virtual simulation needs to be developed. Methods: Curriculum development process and pilot evaluation was used. The curriculum content and structure was developed by analyzing literature including previous studies and major nursing classification systems, and key words derived from focus group interviews of 14 nurses and 20 faculty members with expertise in simulation education. 35 nursing students participated in the evaluation of the developed virtual simulation curriculum. Results: The curriculum developed for virtual simulation in nursing education contained three domains of content areas: (1) enhancing clinical decision-making, (2) experiencing low-exposed situations, and (3) building professional resilience. In addition, seven subdomains of content areas and 35 representative topics in the virtual simulation curriculum were derived. Scenarios of nine representative topics were created, translated into 3D modeling and pilot-evaluated. Conclusions: Considering that nursing education is encountering new demands and challenges from students and the changing society, the newly suggested curriculum for virtual nursing simulation can help nurse educators to plan better educational opportunities for students.

Abstract:Technology developments change education strategies. Incorporating virtual reality into lesson plans allows education to focus not only on learning knowledge but also on knowledge and skills integration. In simulation education, learning environments are designed to approximate actual clinical situations, allowing students to practice skills in virtual clinical situations continuously. In addition, clinical lecturers may observe the students' practice process and provide feedback. Furthermore, through experiencing and practicing clinical procedures, students gain critical clinical judgment, skills, and teamwork operation competences, which may be applied in the real world. In Taiwan, the majority of nurse practitioner training is implemented in hospitals, and clinical training is done using hands-on and face-to-face teaching strategies within a mentorship framework. Because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this hospital-based training model has been significantly challenged. However, this represents an opportunity to migrate the nurse practitioner training model toward technology-based simulation education. Developing more virtual-reality-based lesson plans centered on clinical situations may help students complete training that is normally conducted in hospital teaching environments. Through repetitive practice in virtual reality settings, students may obtain comprehensive knowledge and clinical skills that will help relieve the subsequent stress of clinical practicum work and promote care quality and patient safety.

Abstract:Background Virtual reality has gradually been applied to nursing education, with many advantages. Methods A quasi-experimental, pretest-posttest study was conducted to verify the teaching effectiveness of a virtual reality-based cognitive assessment and rehabilitation simulation course. The Chinese version of the Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory was used to measure the critical thinking abilities of participants. The teaching evaluation included the evaluation of the virtual system, course, teaching, and students themselves. Results The difference between the pre- and post-tests was statistically significant for the dimensions of truth seeking, open mindedness, systematicity, self-confidence, inquisitiveness, maturity, and the total score of critical thinking ability ( p < .05). Conclusion The course can significantly improve the critical thinking ability of nursing undergraduates and provide an effective teaching method.

Abstract:Background and objectives: Virtual reality simulation (VRS) can be used to complement experiential learning, as it enables nursing students to further learn and refine nursing skills outside of the clinical setting. However, gathering evidence for its effectiveness as a teaching method in achieving learning outcomes is still ongoing, and thus there is a lack of systematic synthesis. The objective of this systematic literature review is to analyze VRS scenarios with a high level of immersion and their impact on learning outcomes in nursing education.Methods: A literature search was performed in the MEDLINE, CINAHL, and ERIC databases in November 2022. As a result, fifteen studies were included and analyzed using deductive content analysis.Results: The studies reported twelve different scenarios for virtual reality simulations with high levels of immersion, the focus of which was on acute critical care, broader nursing processes, neonatal and pediatric care, single nursing interventions, and observation of patients’ symptoms. The associated learning objectives were mainly achieved in the domains of cognition and psychomotor skills.Conclusions: There are several VRS scenarios that show potential for use in nursing education. The VRS scenarios are effective in improving learning outcomes, particularly those related to knowledge and skills. Overall, the supportive body of evidence gained through this review may help nurse educators in integrating virtual simulations in their curricula. In the future, nursing and adult learning theories should be given greater consideration, and the aspect of affective learning could be included in design and implementation. Moreover, future research could benefit from exploring the long-term effects of learning after using VRS with a high level of immersion to provide valuable evidence for developing VRS teaching methods in nursing.
Nursing Students from China and the United States: Learning Together Through Virtual Simulation.

Abstract:AIM:The purpose of this project was to connect nursing students from schools of nursing in China and the United States for colearning using virtual simulations.BACKGROUND:With technology and international partnerships, nursing programs can offer global education without students traveling to other countries.METHOD:Virtual simulations were produced by each school for the project. Students completed them in two synchronous 1.5-hour virtual sessions, one month apart. At the end of each session, students completed the Simulation Effectiveness Tool-Modified and the Nurses Clinical Reasoning Scale.RESULTS:Scores on the Simulation Effectiveness Tool-Modified ranged from 75.0 percent to 100 percent on Simulation 1 (video vignettes focused on prioritization) and 88.9 percent to 100 percent on Simulation 2 (computer-based obstetrics case). Most students strongly agreed or agreed that the simulation improved their clinical reasoning skills.CONCLUSION:Virtual simulations allowed students to learn together and develop an awareness of differences in nursing practices across countries.

Abstract:Because nurse competency has a significant impact on patient outcomes, devising effective teaching-learning methods has become an increasingly important concern in the field of nursing education. With the COVID-19 pandemic, non–face-to-face education has become the new normal, thereby increasing the necessity of education and training approaches focused more on digital solutions. Therefore, digitalized education has recently garnered significant attention as an innovative alternative to conventional education. In fact, the situation in Korea is unfavorable for clinical practices because, although the number of nursing universities is growing, the number of institutions for clinical practice programs is inadequate to meet the demand. Furthermore, observation-oriented training, which is alternatively performed to ensure the safety and privacy of patients, is not effective enough to nurture quality in nurses. 1 Therefore, most nursing schools have embraced simulation technology for clinical practices to overcome the limitations of clinical practices while maximizing the capabilities of nursing students.

Multidisciplinary Design–Based Multimodal Virtual Reality Simulation in Nursing Education: Mixed Methods Study

Abstract:Background: The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the necessity for innovative educational methods in nursing. Our study takes a unique approach using a multidisciplinary simulation design, which offers a systematic and comprehensive strategy for developing virtual reality (VR) simulations in nursing education. Objective: The aim of this study is to develop VR simulation content for a pediatric nursing module based on a multidisciplinary simulation design and to evaluate its feasibility for nursing education. Methods: This study used a 1-group, posttest-only design. VR content for pediatric nursing practice was developed by integrating the technological characteristics of a multimodal VR system with the learning elements of traditional nursing simulation, combining various disciplines, including education, engineering, and nursing. A user test was conducted with 12 nursing graduates (preservice nurses) followed by post hoc surveys (assessing presence, VR systems, VR sickness, and simulation satisfaction) and in-depth, one-on-one interviews. Results: User tests showed mean scores of 4.01 (SD 1.43) for presence, 4.91 (SD 0.81) for the VR system, 0.64 (SD 0.35) for VR sickness, and 5.00 (SD 1.00) for simulation satisfaction. In-depth interviews revealed that the main strengths of the immersive VR simulation for pediatric pneumonia nursing were effective visualization and direct experience through hands-on manipulation; the drawback was keyword-based voice interaction. To improve VR simulation quality, participants suggested increasing the number of nursing techniques and refining them in more detail. Conclusions: This VR simulation content for a pediatric nursing practice using a multidisciplinary educational design model was confirmed to have positive educational potential. Further research is needed to confirm the specific learning effects of immersive nursing content based on multidisciplinary design models.
A Pilot Study of an Interprofessional Program Involving Dental, Medical, Nursing, and Pharmacy Students

Abstract:Objective: The silent epidemic of oral diseases disproportionately affects disadvantaged communities, especially the elderly who have complex needs for healthcare. This study was to evaluate a pilot oral health interprofessional program that provided hands-on experiences for students across four disciplines: dentistry, medicine, nursing, and pharmacy. Methods: The 8-weeks program was built on four pedagogical principles: care, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration coupled with the 4Ms model: what matters, medication, mentation, and mobility. The curriculum contained four scenarios of a dental complication in an elderly: Alzheimer's Disease, oral cancer, Parkinson's Disease, and stroke. A mixed-methods approach was used to evaluate this pilot program. Results: The average score of knowledge and attitude has increased from 2.94 to 4.39 ( p < 0.05) on a 5-point Likert scale. The qualitative responses also showed that students became more confident in practicing within the Age-Friendly health system. Discussion: By the end of the program, all students recognized the significance of the interprofessional program to improve their knowledge and skills to work with professionals across disciplines. Two key features that contributed to the success of the program were (1) an interprofessional education that increased students' awareness of other types of services and (2) four scenarios that allowed students to solve the case and gain hands-on experience. Conclusion: An interprofessional education may equip students with competence to address the health of geriatric patients. Materials used in this study could be shared and adapted to prepare learners for other scenarios that require interprofessional team practice.
