Abstract:Through the subtraction of two digital holographic wrapped phases for different wavelengths, it yields a beat phase image corresponding to an equivalent wavelength to remove the phase wrapping. By comparing the beat phase image with any recoding wavelength, the position and multiple of the single wavelength phase jump are confirmed. Hence, the wrapped phase in single wavelength phase is wrapped and the phase noise is kept fixed. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate the measure error induced by the phase noise can be reduced to 2Λ/λm. An optical microstructure element surface is measured by the proposed digital holography with dual wavelength of 650 nm and 632.8 nm. The measured optical element is produced with Fast Tool Servo (FTS). The unwrapped phase image of machining mark on the surface of microstructure element is acquired clearly. The equivalent wavelength is 0.024 mm. Then, the three dimensional data of the microstructure profile respectively in high frequency and low frequency regions are obtained by frequency filtering. The roughnesses corresponding to different frequency region are 33.2 nm, 19.3 nm and 23.4 nm respectively. The affecting factors for different machining mark are analyzed. The cutting parameters of the FTS are also deduced.

Abstract:Narrow linewidth and fast-chirped frequency are essential in frequency-modulated continuous-wave lasers. We introduce a laser that meets these requirements by coupling a distributed feedback laser with an external high-Q microring resonator, where a bulky stacked piezoelectric chip is attached to the resonator for fast tuning. The laser demonstrates an ultranarrow intrinsic linewidth of 22 Hz in the self-injection-locked state. Actuated by the bulky piezoelectric chip, the maximum triangular actuation bandwidth can reach 100 kHz. The driving voltage is filtered to avoid a resonant mechanical mode, obtaining the minimum residual linearity error at 10 kHz with a 4.2 GHz tuning range. A light detection and ranging system was set up for a proof-of-concept experiment, demonstrating a high detection precision with standard deviations of 2.7 and 4.0 cm for targets at 15 and 30 m, respectively.

Abstract:Laser with high spectral purity plays a crucial role in high-precision optical metrology and coherent communication. Thanks to the rapid development of laser frequency stabilization, the laser phase noise can be remarkably compensated, allowing its ultra-narrow linewidth subject to mostly quantum limit. Nevertheless, the accurate characterization of phase noise dynamics and its intrinsic linewidth of a highly coherent laser remains ambiguous and challenging. Here, we present an approach capable of revealing delay-time-resolved phase noise dynamics of a coherent laser based on coherent optical time domain reflectometry (COTDR), in which distributed Rayleigh scattering along a delay fibre essentially allows a time-of-flight mapping of a heterodyne beating signal associated with delay-time-dependent phase information from a single laser source. Ultimately, this novel technique facilitates a precise measurement of ultra-narrow laser linewidth by exploiting its delay-time-resolved phase jitter statistics, confirmed with the analytical modelling and numerical simulations.

Abstract:Phase noise is a key parameter to evaluate the short-term stability of a single-frequency laser. It is of great important for many applications, such as Lidar, coherent optical communication, optical sensing, and optical atomic clock, just to name a few. In this paper, we propose a method to characterize the phase noise of a single-frequency, which based on an offset phase locked loop (OPLL). The phase of the laser under test and a low noise reference laser are locked via an offset OPLL. The phase noise of the laser under test can be extracted by the beat-note of the two lasers. Experimentally, we achieve the phase noise of a narrow-linewidth laser, which agree well with the results of a commercial optical noise analyzer.

Abstract:A long distance high resolution frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) laser rangefinder with phase noise compensation and two-dimensional (2D) data processing skills is developed. Range-finding ladar consists of a continuously chirped laser source, an auxiliary reference interferometer, and a monostatic optical transceiver for target illumination and return photon collection. To extend the range unambiguity and lower the electronic processing bandwidth, a two-step laser frequency chirping scheme is adopted, where a long pulse width, small frequency bandwidth laser chirping signal are used in step 1 for coarse distance estimation, and a short pulse width and large frequency bandwidth laser chirping signal are applied afterwards for step 2 high resolution distance realization. An auxiliary reference interferometer is to record the phase noise originated from the laser source to compensate for phase errors induced in the target return photons. The 2D data processing skill helps to coherently sum up all the phase noise removed echo photons to achieve high resolution range peak extraction with high detection sensitivity. Experimental demonstration shows that the proposed FMCW ladar at 1550 nm wavelength with a laser chirping bandwidth of 10 GHz and electronic processing bandwidth of 200 MHz can measure a corner cube test target in an outdoor atmospheric environment, and the measurement results are 12013.905 m with a 2.4 cm range resolution under strong return photon levels and 12013.920 m with a 2.5 cm range resolution under weak return photon levels.

Abstract:We proposed and experimentally demonstrated a delay-match sampling method to measure and compensate the laser phase error in optical frequency-domain reflectometry system. By using the error signal extracted from a simple auxiliary Mach-Zehnder interferometer with only a 10-ns delay, the laser phase error is effectively compensated. Considerable improvement is achieved in spatial resolution from 200 m to 7 cm at a measurement distance over 10 times the round-trip laser coherence length.

Abstract:A FMCW LiDAR system of both the distributed feedback laser and external cavity laser is established in baseband beat notes, rather than up-conversion to an intermediate frequency to exclude flicker noise. Meanwhile, utilizing fast-scanning MEMS mirrors, high-quality real-time (1 fps) 4-D images of the slow-moving object (10 mm/s) can be directly constructed at the baseband with a central frequency as low as 100 kHz and a small Doppler shift. The proposed LiDAR architecture based on such a low-frequency baseband significantly improves the optical power budget on the transmitter side and eliminates the costly high-speed sampling circuits on the receiver side.

Abstract:<p>In order to study the influence of photocurrent noise on the detection performance of continuous coherent lidar, the waveform of photocurrent spectrum and the problem of lidar noise are studied theoretically and experimentally. When the optical beam is split after the optical fiber amplifier and the wind measurement experiment is carried out, the "crosstalk" is small, the signal-to-noise ratio of the system is high, and the echo data can be effectively obtained; however, the "crosstalk" is large and the signal-to-noise ratio of the system is low when the beam is split after the seed laser and the wind measurement experiment is carried out, so the effective echo data cannot be obtained. According to the research results, a set of nacelle lidar with beam splitting after the optical amplifier was developed. It was installed in the wind farm and tested in the field. The lidar can achieve 86% data acquisition rate. The experimental results show that the beam splitting at different positions affects the delay distance between the signal reflected by the circulator and the local oscillator light, thus affects the magnitude of the photocurrent in the system, and ultimately affects the detection performance of coherent lidar.</p>

A microcomb-empowered Fourier domain mode-locked LiDAR

Abstract:Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) has emerged as an indispensable tool in autonomous technology. Among its various techniques, frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) LiDAR stands out due to its capability to operate with ultralow return power, immunity to unwanted light, and simultaneous acquisition of distance and velocity. However, achieving a rapid update rate with sub-micron precision remains a challenge for FMCW LiDARs. Here, we present such a LiDAR with a sub-10 nm precision and a 24.6 kHz update rate by combining a broadband Fourier domain mode-locked (FDML) laser with a silicon nitride soliton microcomb. An ultrahigh frequency chirp rate up to 320 PHz/s is linearized by a 50 GHz microcomb to reach this performance. Our theoretical analysis also contributes to resolving the challenge of FMCW velocity measurements with nonlinear frequency sweeps and enables us to realize velocity measurement with an uncertainty below 0.4 mm/s. Our work shows how nanophotonic microcombs can unlock the potential of ultrafast frequency sweeping lasers for applications including LiDAR, optical coherence tomography and sensing.

Abstract:Low-noise lasers are of central importance in a wide variety of applications, including high spectral-efficiency coherent communication protocols, distributed fibre sensing, and long distance coherent LiDAR. In addition to low phase noise, frequency agility, that is, the ability to achieve high-bandwidth actuation of the laser frequency, is imperative for triangular chirping in frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) based ranging or any optical phase locking as routinely used in metrology. While integrated silicon-based lasers have experienced major advances and are now employed on a commercial scale in data centers, integrated lasers with sub-100 Hz-level intrinsic linewidth are based on optical feedback from photonic circuits that lack frequency agility. Here, we demonstrate a wafer-scale-manufacturing-compatible hybrid photonic integrated laser that exhibits ultralow intrinsic linewidth of 25 Hz while offering unsurpassed megahertz actuation bandwidth, with a tuning range larger than 1 GHz. Our approach uses ultralow-loss (1 dB/m) Si$_3$N$_4$ photonic microresonators, combined with aluminium nitride (AlN) or lead zirconium titanate (PZT) microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) based stress-optic actuation. Electrically driven low-phase noise lasing is attained by self-injection locking of an Indium Phosphide (InP) laser chip and only limited by fundamental thermo-refractive noise. By utilizing difference drive and apodization of the photonic chip, a flat actuation response up to 10 MHz is achieved. We leverage this capability to demonstrate a compact coherent LiDAR engine that can generate up to 800 kHz FMCW triangular optical chirp signals, requiring neither any active linearization nor predistortion compensation, and perform a 10 m optical ranging experiment, with a resolution of 12.5 cm.

Abstract:A new delayed self-heterodyne technique using an unbalanced Michelson interferometer (MI) composed of a 3*3 optical fiber coupler is proposed. The principle of the technique to measure the laser phase and frequency noise are analyzed theoretically. The experimental setup is introduced. Also, the technique is used to characterize the phase noise power spectral density (PSD), frequency noise PSD and linewidth of two typical kinds of lasers, distributed feedback (DFB) semiconductor laser (Emcore) and super-narrow linewidth DFB fiber laser (NKT). The results show that the technique can measure the noise characters of different kinds of lasers and it confirms the correction and robustness of the proposed technique.

Abstract:The linearity of the laser frequency modulation is a crucial factor that affects the performance of the frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) LiDAR ranging. Nonlinearity can influence ranging resolution and introduce errors. This paper proposes a method for correcting frequency modulation nonlinearity based on waveform preprocessing for the modulation signal of the laser. After correction, the residual nonlinearity (1-r2) of the laser is reduced to for the up-sweeping and for the down-sweeping using the modulation signal with the repetition frequency of 50 kHz. The full-width at half of the maximum (FWHM) of the spectrum decreases by 86% compared to pre-correction, resulting in the ranging error of 0.37% at the distance of 38 cm. With distances of 0.90 m, 1.80 m, 2.89 m, and 4.13 m, respectively, the ranging error stabilizes at 0.2%, and the minimum deflection of distance can reach .

Abstract:Frequency modulation continuous wave (FMCW) laser radar (Ladar) is a new radar system suitable for long-range detection and high-resolution imaging. However, the transmitted signal inevitably suffers from nonlinear frequency modulation errors which reduce the quality of Ladar imaging. We propose a nonlinear phase estimation and compensation method based on synchrosqueezing wavelet transform (SST). We first use SST to synchrosqueeze the dechirp signal containing a reference range in time–frequency domain and obtain the time–frequency information of the reference dechirp signal. As SST could aggregate the time–frequency distribution of noise, the proposed method is effective even in a noisy environment. A nonlinearity model in time–frequency domain is then built to estimate the nonlinear phase of the transmitted signals by using the time–frequency information of the reference dechirp signal. For the case of long-range detection, we adopt a residual video phase filtering to convert the nonlinear phase of the dechirp signal to range-independent phase errors. Finally, the nonlinearity of the dechirp signal is compensated using the estimated nonlinear phase of the transmitted signals. The experimental and real data tests show that the proposed method effectively improves the resolution of long-range Ladar imaging by compensating for the nonlinearity of the dechirp signal. Its advantage is the effectiveness for noisy and multicomponent FMCW Ladar signals.

Abstract:Frequency-modulated continuous-wave laser detection and ranging (FMCW LiDAR) is a useful technology with various applications. However, numerous existing FMCW LiDAR systems are bulky, restricting their applicability in scenarios where minimizing the form factor is essential. Another major limitation is their echo-signal sensitivity. Considering that the detected targets are typically noncooperative, efficient detection of scattered light is imperative. Based on that, a microcavity Raman laser-based FMCW LiDAR is proposed combined with laser feedback technique. In the laser feedback regime, weak echo signals from targets participate in the stimulated radiation of the laser and are enhanced spontaneously when the measurement signal resonates with the laser relaxation oscillation. Without extra optical amplifiers, the laser cavity functions as an intrinsic amplifier and provides an improved signal-to-noise ratio of over 30 dB compared with conventional frequency swept interference methods. The response optical power limit can be down to 7.92 fW in the experiment. The standard deviation in 10 measurements is about 217 μm when targeting an aluminum block. By combining the proposed system with a 2-axis galvanometer scanner, 3D imaging of actual scenes can also be effectively reconstructed. This study illustrates a microcavity Raman laser-based device for conducting FMCW ranging measurements. It employs an extremely low-power near-infrared laser for detection, effectively addressing the issue of laser active detection equipment being easily detected.

Abstract:Frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) laser interferometry technology holds significant potential for applications in the fields of ultraprecision manufacturing and high-precision sensing. This paper proposes a novel approach among current phase demodulation methods is based on cross-correlation to address the challenge of this technology. On the basis of nonlinear correction of a distributed feedback (DFB) laser, the intercepted beat frequency signal was first preprocessed with Z-score signal normalization and a smoothing filter. Subsequently, the interference beat signal was subjected to processing using a correlation method to derive the correlation function. Finally, the phase difference between adjacent beat signals was determined by pinpointing the maximum value of the cross-correlation function, enabling accurate displacement demodulation. Experimental validation was performed by constructing an FMCW laser interferometric displacement measurement system. The results indicated that the standard deviation of the displacement error for the cross-correlation method was 2.41 nm during static measurements. Compared to conventional maximum-point method, the static measurement error of the cross-correlation method has been reduced by 1.43 times. In dynamic measurements in the 500 μm range, The measurement error of the cross-correlation method has been reduced by 6.04 times, avoiding the dynamic measurement positioning problem of conventional feature point demodulation methods and making the measurement results more accurate. This advancement holds substantial practical value in the realm of phase demodulation in laser interferometry.

Abstract:We propose a novel approach to laser frequency noise characterization by delayed self-heterodyne. Compared with the traditional treatment, our method applies to both long and short delay, corresponding to uncorrelated and correlated self-heterodyne. In the case of long delay, it overcomes the influence of 1/f noise on the intrinsic linewidth extraction from a broadened spectrum, and the results are more accurate than Voigt profile fitting. For short delayed correlated heterodyne, it eliminates artifact peaks at multiples of the reciprocal of delay time introduced by transferring measured RF phase noise to laser phase noise, thus extending the measurement range. In addition, it calibrates the frequency noise overestimation caused by a finite noise floor. This method remains valid when the delay and the coherence time are comparable. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in characterizing lasers with intrinsic linewidth ranging from sub-100 Hz to megahertz.
