Abstract:We define the singular elliptic genus for arbitrary normal surfaces, prove that it is a birational invariant, and show that it generalizes the singular elliptic genus of Borisov and Libgober and the stringy $\chi_y$ genus of Batyrev and Veys.

Abstract:We use the Atiyah-Bott-Segal-Singer Lefschetz fixed point formula to calculate the Hirzebruch ?y genus Xy(S[n]), where S[n] is the Hilbert scheme of points of length n of a surface S. Combinatorial interpretation of the weights of the fixed points of the natural torus action on ( 2)[n] is used. This is the first step to prove a conjectural formula about the elliptic genus of the Hilbert schemes.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the distribution of the genuses of cluster quivers of finite mutation type. First, we prove that in the $11$ exceptional cases, the distribution of genuses is $0$ or $1$. Next, we consider the relationship between the genus of an oriented surface and that of cluster quivers from this surface. It is verified that the genus of an oriented surface is an upper bound for the genuses of cluster quivers from this surface. Furthermore, for any non-negative integer $n$ and a closed oriented surface of genus $n$, we show that there always exist a set of punctures and a triangulation of this surface such that the corresponding cluster quiver from this triangulation is exactly of genus $n$.

Abstract:For any complex reductive group $G$ and any compact Riemann surface with genus $g>1$, we show that every connected component of the associated character variety has symplectic singularities, and has terminal singularities unless $g=2$ and the Dynkin diagram of $G$ contains an $A_1$-component. We also show that the identity component is $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial. The singularities caused by irreducible local systems with automorphism groups larger than the centre of $G$ are controlled by elliptic endoscopy.

Local Euler characteristics of $A_n$-singularities and their application to hyperbolicity

Abstract:Wahl's local Euler characteristic measures the local contributions of a singularity to the usual Euler characteristic of a sheaf. Using tools from toric geometry, we study the local Euler characteristic of sheaves of symmetric differentials for isolated surface singularities of type $A_n$. We prove an explicit formula for the local Euler characteristic of the $m$th symmetric power of the cotangent bundle; this is a quasi-polynomial in $m$ of period $n+1$. We also express the components of the local Euler characteristic as a count of lattice points in a non-convex polyhedron, again showing it is a quasi-polynomial. We apply our computations to obtain new examples of algebraic quasi-hyperbolic surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^3$ of low degree. We show that an explicit family of surfaces with many singularities constructed by Labs has no genus $0$ curves for the members of degree at least $8$ and no curves of genus $0$ or $1$ for degree at least $10$.

Abstract:Given a weighted dual graph such that the canonical cycle K ′ K’ exists, is there a singularity corresponding to the given weighted dual graph and which has Gorenstein structure? This is one of the important problems in normal surface singularities. In this paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of Gorenstein structures for weakly elliptic singularities. A necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of maximally elliptic structure is also given. Hence, the above question is answered affirmatively for a special kind of singularities. We also develop a theory for those elliptic Gorenstein singularities with geometric genus equal to three.

Abstract:A germ of normal complex analytical surface is called a Hirzebruch-Jung singularity if it is analytically isomorphic to the germ at the 0-dimensional orbit of an affine toric surface. Two such germs are known to be isomorphic if and only if the toric surfaces corresponding to them are equivariantly isomorphic. We extend this result to higher-dimensional Hirzebruch-Jung singularities, which we define to be the germs analytically isomorphic to the germ at the 0-dimensional orbit of an affine toric variety determined by a lattice and a simplicial cone of maximal dimension. We deduce a normalization algorithm for quasi-ordinary hypersurface singularities.

Abstract:Wall-crossing formulas for various flavors of elliptic genus can be obtained using master spaces. We give a topological criterion which implies that such wall-crossing formulas are trivial. Applications are given for: GIT quotients, following Thaddeus; moduli of sheaves, following Mochizuki; Donaldson-Thomas and Vafa-Witten theory, following Joyce and Tanaka-Thomas respectively.

Abstract:In an earlier work we used a path integral analysis to propose a higher genus generalization of the elliptic genus. We found a cobordism invariant parametrized by Teichmuller space. Here we simplify the formula and study the behavior of our invariant under the action of the mapping class group of the Riemann surface. We find that our invariant is a modular function with multiplier just as in genus one.

Abstract:We give positivity conditions on the embedding of a smooth variety which guarantee the normality of the secant variety, generalizing earlier results of the author and others. We also give classes of secant varieties satisfying the Hodge conjecture as well as a result on the singular locus of degenerate secant varieties.

Abstract:Singular ruled surface is an interesting research object and is the breakthrough point of exploring new problems. However, because of singularity, it’s difficult to study the properties of singular ruled surfaces. In this paper, we combine singularity theory and Clifford algebra to study singular ruled surfaces. We take advantage of the dual number of Clifford algebra to make the singular ruled surfaces transform into the dual singular curves on the dual unit sphere. By using the research method on the singular curves, we give the definition of the dual evolute of the dual front in the dual unit sphere, we further provide the k -th dual evolute of the dual front. Moreover, we consider the ruled surface corresponding to the dual evolute and k -th dual evolute and provide the developable conditions of these ruled surfaces.

Abstract:We prove an all genera version of the Crepant Resolution Conjecture of Ruan and Bryan-Graber for type A surface singularities. We are based on a method that explicitly computes Hurwitz-Hodge integrals described in an earlier paper and some recent results by Liu-Xu for some intersection numbers on the Deligne-Mumford moduli spaces. We also generalize our results to some three-dimensional orbifolds.

Abstract:In this paper we classify all singular irreducible symplectic surfaces, i.e., compact, connected complex surfaces with canonical singularities that have a holomorphic symplectic form $\sigma$ on the smooth locus, and for which every finite quasi-étale covering has the algebra of reflexive forms spanned by the reflexive pull-back of $\sigma$. We moreover prove that the Hilbert scheme of two points on such a surface $X$ is an irreducible symplectic variety, at least in the case where the smooth locus of $X$ is simply connected.

Abstract:Let $(f,g): (S,s) \to (\mathbb{C}^2, 0)$ be a finite morphism from a germ of normal complex analytic surface to the germ of $\mathbb{C}^2$ at the origin. We show that the affine algebraic curve in $\mathbb{C}^2$ defined by the initial Newton polynomial of a defining series of the discriminant germ of $(f,g)$ depends up to toric automorphisms only on the germs of curves defined by $f$ and $g$. This result generalizes a theorem of Gryszka, Gwoździewicz and Parusiński, which is the special case in which $(S,s)$ is smooth. Our proof uses a common generalization of formulas of Lê and Casas-Alvero for the intersection number of the discriminant with a germ of plane curve. It uses also a theorem of Delgado and Maugendre characterizing the special members of pencils of curves on normal surface singularities. We apply it to the pencils generated by all pairs $(f^b, g^a)$, for varying positive integral exponents $a, b$, following a strategy initiated by Gwoździewicz. This is similar to the Eudoxian method of comparison of magnitudes by comparing the sizes of their positive integral multiples.

A Geometric description of almost Gorensteinness for two-dimensional normal singularities

Abstract:Let $A$ be an excellent two-dimensional normal local ring containing an algebraically closed field. Then $A$ is called an elliptic singularity if $p_f(A)=1$, where $p_f$ denotes the fundamental genus. On the other hand, the concept of almost Gorenstein rings was introduced by Barucci and Fröberg for one-dimensional local rings and generalized by Goto, Takahashi and Taniguchi to higher dimension. In this paper, we describe almost Gorenstein rings in geometric language using resolution of singularities and give criterions to be almost Gorenstein. In particular, we show that elliptic singularities are almost Gorenstein. Also, for every integer $g\ge 2$, we provide examples of singularities that is almost Gorenstein (resp. not almost Gorenstein) with $p_f(A)=g$. We also provide several examples of determinantal singularities associated with $2\times 3$ matrices, which include both almost Gorenstein singularities and non-almost Gorenstein singularities.

Abstract:We match the elliptic genus of a Berglund-Hubsch Landau-Ginzburg orbifold with the supertrace of y(J[0]) q(L[0]) on a vertex algebra V-1,V-1. We show that it is a weak Jacobi form and the elliptic genus of one theory is equal (up to a sign) to the elliptic genus of its mirror.
Surface quotient singularities and bigness of the cotangent bundle: Part II

Abstract:In two parts, we present a bigness criterion for the cotangent bundle of resolutions of orbifold surfaces of general type. As a corollary, we obtain the \textit{canonical model singularities} (CMS) criterion that can be applied to determine when a birational class of surfaces has smooth representatives with big cotangent bundle and compare it with other known criteria. We then apply this criterion to the problem of finding the minimal degrees $d$ for which the deformation equivalence class of a smooth hypersurface of degree d in $\PP^3$ has a representative with big cotangent bundle; applications to the minimal resolutions of cyclic covers of $\PP^2$ branched along line arrangements in general position are also obtained. The CMS criterion involves invariants of canonical singularities whose values were unknown. In this part of the work, we describe a method of finding these invariants and obtain formulas for $A_n$-singularities. We also use our approach to derive several extension results for symmetric differentials on the complement of the exceptional locus $E$ of the minimal resolution of an $A_n$-singularity; namely, we characterize the precise extent to which the poles along $E$ of symmetric differentials on the complement are milder than logarithmic poles.

Isotrivial elliptic surfaces in positive characteristic

Abstract:We study relatively minimal surfaces equipped with a strongly isotrivial elliptic fibration in positive characteristic by means of the notion of equivariantly normal curves introduced and developed recently by Brion. Such surfaces are isomorphic to a contracted product $E\times^G X$, where $E$ is an elliptic curve, $G$ is a finite subgroup scheme of $E$ and $X$ is a $G$-normal curve. Using this description, we compute their Betti numbers to determine their birational classes. This allow us to complete the classification of maximal automorphism groups of surfaces in any characteristic. When $G$ is diagonalizable, we compute additional invariants to study the structure of their Picard schemes.
