We also acknowledge the unpublished 34-page critique from Allen in response to our 2015 Lancet Commission, in which he, among other points, extolled the benefits of clean coal, and equated the work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to that of “the domain of prophets, clairvoyants, and science fiction”. The Lancet Countdown collaboration comprises some 27 academic institutions and UN agencies from around the world (including WHO, the University of Reading and University College London in the UK, and Tsinghua University in Beijing, China), with expertise in areas ranging from climate science through to public health. Our work is peer-reviewed, and we are committed to the journal's excellent standards of objectivity and scientific rigour. In their Correspondence, Florin and Allen note the role of an urban heat island effect in worsening exposure to extreme heat. Here, we agree. Equally, any CO2 fertilisation effect will eventually be outweighed by the negative effects of heat stress, drought, and flooding on agricultural productivity, resulting from unabated climate change.
