Abstract:We provide a construction for the kromatic symmetric function $\overline{X}_G$ of a graph introduced by Crew, Pechenik, and Spirkl using combinatorial (linearly compact) Hopf algebras. As an application, we show that $\overline{X}_G$ has a positive expansion into multifundamental quasisymmetric functions. We also study two related quasisymmetric $q$-analogues of $\overline{X}_G$, which are $K$-theoretic generalizations of the quasisymmetric chromatic function of Shareshian and Wachs. We classify exactly when one of these analogues is symmetric. For the other, we derive a positive expansion into symmetric Grothendieck functions for graphs $G$ that are natural unit interval orders.

Noncommutative symmetric functions and skewing operators

Abstract:Skewing operators play a central role in the symmetric function theory because of the importance of the product structure of the symmetric function space. The theory of noncommutative symmetric functions is a useful tool for studying expansions of a given symmetric function in terms of various bases. In this paper, we establish a further development of the theory for studying skewing operators. Using this machinery, we are able to easily reproduce the Littlewood--Richardson rule, and provide recurrence relations for chromatic quasisymmetric functions, which generalizes Harada--Precup's recurrence.

Abstract:The $e$-positivity conjecture and the $e$-unimodality conjecture of chromatic quasisymmetric functions are proved for some classes of natural unit interval orders. Recently, J. Shareshian and M. Wachs introduced chromatic quasisymmetric functions as a refinement of Stanley's chromatic symmetric functions and conjectured the $e$-positivity and the $e$-unimodality of these functions. The $e$-positivity of chromatic quasisymmetric functions implies the $e$-positivity of corresponding chromatic symmetric functions, and our work resolves Stanley's conjecture on chromatic symmetric functions of $(3+1)$-free posets for two classes of natural unit interval orders.
A geometric realization of the chromatic symmetric function of a unit interval graph

Abstract:Shareshian-Wachs, Brosnan-Chow, and Guay-Pacquet [Adv. Math. ${\bf 295}$ (2016), ${\bf 329}$ (2018), <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1601.05498" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1601.05498">arXiv:1601.05498</a>] realized the chromatic (quasi-)symmetric function of a unit interval graph in terms of Hessenberg varieties. Here we exhibit another realization of these chromatic (quasi-)symmetric functions in terms of the Betti cohomology of the variety $\mathscr X_\Psi$ defined in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2301.00862" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2301.00862">arXiv:2301.00862</a>]. This yields a new inductive combinatorial expression of these chromatic symmetric functions. Based on this, we propose a geometric refinement of the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture, whose validity would imply the Shareshian-Wachs conjecture.

Abstract:The chromatic symmetric function (CSF) of Dyck paths of Stanley and its Shareshian-Wachs $q$-analogue have important connections to Hessenberg varieties, diagonal harmonics and LLT polynomials. In the, so called, abelian case they are also curiously related to placements of non-attacking rooks by results of Stanley-Stembridge (1993) and Guay-Paquet (2013). For the $q$-analogue, these results have been generalized by Abreu-Nigro (2020) and Guay-Paquet (private communication), using $q$-hit numbers. Among our main results is a new proof of Guay-Paquet's elegant identity expressing the $q$-CSFs in a CSF basis with $q$-hit coefficients. We further show its equivalence to the Abreu-Nigro identity expanding the $q$-CSF in the elementary symmetric functions. In the course of our work we establish that the $q$-hit numbers in these expansions differ from the originally assumed Garsia-Remmel $q$-hit numbers by certain powers of $q$. We prove new identities for these $q$-hit numbers, and establish connections between the three different variants.

Abstract:We develop a quasisymmetric analogue of the combinatorial theory of Schubert polynomials and the associated divided difference operators. Our counterparts are "forest polynomials", and a new family of linear operators, whose theory of compositions is governed by forests and the "Thompson monoid". Our approach extends naturally to $m$-colored quasisymmetric functions. We then give several applications of our theory to fundamental quasisymmetric functions, the study of quasisymmetric coinvariant rings and their associated harmonics, and positivity results for various expansions. In particular we resolve a conjecture of Aval-Bergeron-Li regarding quasisymmetric harmonics.

Abstract:Abstract We define vertex-colourings for edge-partitioned digraphs, which unify the theory of $P$-partitions and proper vertex-colourings of graphs. We use our vertex-colourings to define generalized chromatic functions, which merge the chromatic symmetric and quasisymmetric functions of graphs and generating functions of $P$-partitions. Moreover, numerous classical bases of symmetric and quasisymmetric functions, both in commuting and noncommuting variables, can be realized as special cases of our generalized chromatic functions. We also establish product and coproduct formulas for our functions. Additionally, we construct the new Hopf algebra of $r$-quasisymmetric functions in noncommuting variables, and apply our functions to confirm its Hopf structure, and establish natural bases for it.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the \emph{$\alpha$-chromatic symmetric functions} $\chi^{(\alpha)}_\pi[X;q]$, extending Shareshian and Wachs' chromatic symmetric functions with an additional real parameter $\alpha$. We present positive combinatorial formulas and provide explicit interpretations. Notably, we show an explicit monomial expansion in terms of the $\alpha$-binomial basis and an expansion into certain chromatic symmetric functions in terms of the $\alpha$-falling factorial basis. Among various connections with other subjects, we highlight a significant link to $q$-rook theory, including a new solution to the $q$-hit problem posed by Garsia and Remmel in their 1986 paper introducing $q$-rook polynomials.

Abstract:Stanley associated with a graph G a symmetric function X_G which reduces to G's chromatic polynomial under a certain specialization of variables. He then proved various theorems generalizing results about the chromatic polynomial, as well as new ones that cannot be interpreted at that level. Unfortunately, X_G does not satisfy a Deletion-Contraction Law which makes it difficult to apply induction. We introduce a symmetric function in noncommuting variables which does have such a law and specializes to X_G when the variables are allowed to commute. This permits us to further generalize some of Stanley's theorems and prove them in a uniform and straightforward manner. Furthermore, we make some progress on the (3+1)-free Conjecture of Stanley and Stembridge.

Abstract:The chromatic quasisymmetric functions (csf) of Shareshian and Wachs associated to unit interval orders have attracted a lot of interest since their introduction in 2016, both in combinatorics and geometry, because of their relation to the famous Stanley-Stembridge conjecture (1993) and to the topology of Hessenberg varieties, respectively. In the present work we study the csf associated to the larger class of interval orders with no restriction on the length of the intervals. Inspired by an article of Abreu and Nigro, we show that these csf are weighted sums of certain quasisymmetric functions associated to the increasing spanning forests of the associated incomparability graphs. Furthermore, we define quasisymmetric functions that include the unicellular LLT symmetric functions and generalize an identity due to Carlsson and Mellit. Finally we conjecture a formula giving their expansion in the type 1 power sum quasisymmetric functions which should extend a theorem of Athanasiadis.

Abstract:The Schur functions, a basis for the symmetric polynomials (Sym), encode the irreducible representations of the symmetric group, $\mathfrak{S}_n$, via the Frobenius characteristic map. In 1996, Krob and Thibon defined a quasisymmetric Frobenius map on the representations of $\mathcal{H}_n(0)$, mapping them to the quasisymmetric functions (QSym). Despite the obvious inclusion of Sym in QSym and the close relationship between $\mathfrak{S}_n$ and $\mathcal{H}_n(0)$, there is no known direct link between these two Frobenius characteristic maps and the related representations. We explore three specific situations in which a deformation of an $\mathfrak{S}_n$ action results in a valid $\mathcal{H}_n(0)$ action and gives a quasisymmetric Frobenius characteristic that is equal to the symmetric Frobenius characteristic. We introduce the concept of quasisymmetric compatibility, which formalizes a link between the two maps, and we show it applies to all $\mathfrak{S}_n$-modules.

Chromatic symmetric functions and change of basis

Abstract:We prove necessary conditions for certain elementary symmetric functions, $e_\lambda$, to appear with nonzero coefficient in Stanley's chromatic symmetric function as well as in the generalization considered by Shareshian and Wachs. We do this by first considering the expansion in the monomial or Schur basis and then performing a basis change. Using the former, we make a connection with two fundamental graph theory invariants, the independence and clique numbers. This allows us to prove nonnegativity of three-column coefficients for all natural unit interval graphs. The Schur basis permits us to give a new interpretation of the coefficient of $e_n$ in terms of tableaux. We are also able to give an explicit formula for that coefficient.

Chromatic symmetric functions via the group algebra of $S_n$

Abstract:We prove some Schur positivity results for the chromatic symmetric function $X_G$ of a (hyper)graph $G$, using connections to the group algebra of the symmetric group. The first such connection works for (hyper)forests $F$: we describe the Schur coefficients of $X_F$ in terms of eigenvalues of a product of Hermitian idempotents in the group algebra, one factor for each edge (a more general formula of similar shape holds for all chordal graphs). Our main application of this technique is to prove a conjecture of Taylor on the Schur positivity of certain $X_F$, which implies Schur positivity of the formal group laws associated to various combinatorial generating functions. We also introduce the pointed chromatic symmetric function $X_{G,v}$ associated to a rooted graph $(G,v)$. We prove that if $X_{G,v}$ and $X_{H,w}$ are positive in the generalized Schur basis of Strahov, then the chromatic symmetric function of the wedge sum of $(G,v)$ and $(H,w)$ is Schur positive.

Abstract:Quasisymmetric functions have recently been used in time series analysis as polynomial features that are invariant under, so-called, dynamic time warping. We extend this notion to data indexed by two parameters and thus provide warping invariants for images. We show that two-parameter quasisymmetric functions are complete in a certain sense, and provide a two-parameter quasi-shuffle identity. A compatible coproduct is based on diagonal concatenation of the input data, leading to a (weak) form of Chen's identity.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a new class of harmonic univalent functions with respect to k-symmetric points by using a newly-defined q-analog of the derivative operator for complex harmonic functions. For this harmonic univalent function class, we derive a sufficient condition, a representation theorem, and a distortion theorem. We also apply a generalized q-Bernardi–Libera–Livingston integral operator to examine the closure properties and coefficient bounds. Furthermore, we highlight some known consequences of our main results. In the concluding part of the article, we have finally reiterated the well-demonstrated fact that the results presented in this article can easily be rewritten as the so-called (p,q)-variations by making some straightforward simplifications, and it will be an inconsequential exercise, simply because the additional parameter p is obviously unnecessary.
Non-Schur-positivity of chromatic symmetric functions

Abstract:We provide a formula for every Schur coefficient in the chromatic symmetric function of a graph in terms of special rim hook tabloids. This formula is useful in confirming the non-Schur positivity of the chromatic symmetric function of a graph, especially when Stanley's stable partition method does not work. As applications, we determine Schur positive fan graphs and Schur positive complete tripartite graphs. We show that any squid graph obtained by adding $n$ leaves to a common vertex on an $m$-vertex cycle is not Schur positive if $m\ne 2n-1$, and conjecture that neither are the squid graphs with $m=2n-1$.

Abstract:We consider quasisymmetric reparametrizations of the parameter space of the quadratic family. We prove that the set of quadratic maps which are either regular or Collet-Eckmann with polynomial recurrence of the critical orbit has full Lebesgue measure. (The intent of this work is just to be a rigorous reference for the companion preprint Statistical properties of unimodal maps: smooth families with negative Schwarzian derivative. It is based on the LaTeX file of the paper Statistical properties of unimodal maps: the quadratic family. The proofs are very similar and in many places differ just by change of constants.)

Abstract:In this work, we study some new applications of symmetric quantum calculus in the field of Geometric Function Theory. We use the cardioid domain and the symmetric quantum difference operator to generate new classes of multivalent q-starlike and q-convex functions. We examine a wide range of interesting properties for functions that can be classified into these newly defined classes, such as estimates for the bounds for the first two coefficients, Fekete–Szego-type functional and coefficient inequalities. All the results found in this research are sharp. A number of well-known corollaries are additionally taken into consideration to show how the findings of this research relate to those of earlier studies.
