Abstract:<p>The synthesis of fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) using hyaluronic acid as a carbon source was studied here. The results indicated that the addition of citric acid can improve the chemical stability and fluorescence intensity of the CDs. The citric acid plays a positive role in the synthesis of the CDs and prevent excessive carbonization of hyaluronic acid. Therefore, a bright blue carbon dots was obtained by one-step hydrothermal method using hyaluronic acid and citric acid. As a small number of ferric ions (Fe3+) and folic acid (FA) can quench the fluorescence of the carbon dots, and the fluorescence quenching ratio has a good linear relationship with Fe3+ and FA concentrations. Two fluorescence analysis methods for sensitive detection of Fe3+ and FA respectively were established. The different fluorescence quenching mechanisms of HCA-CDs toward the two targets respectively and the analytical parameters for the detection of the two targets were studied. The results indicated the proposed methods have the potential for sensing Fe3+ and FA in real samples.</p>
