Abstract:Chronic exposure to high stress levels may lead to imbalances in 1 ability to participate in many meaningful roles, including parenting. [ 1 , 2 ] Caregivers often experience stress as a negative psychological response to the obligation of fulfilling parenting roles, and this stress is heightened among caregivers of children with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. [ 3 , 4 ] Over 100 million children under the age of 15 years have a moderate or severe disability, with the majority living in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). [ 5 ] Over 219 million children under 5 living in LMIC are at risk for poor developmental outcomes and disability in sensorimotor, cognitive, and social-emotional domains because of the lack of adequate cognitive stimulation, nutrition, and resources.
