Abstract:Large-scale simulations have been performed in the current-driven three-dimensional XY spin glass with resistively shunted-junction dynamics for sample sizes up to 64(3). It is observed that the linear resistivity at low temperatures tends to zero, providing a strong evidence of a finite-temperature phase-coherence (i.e., spin-glass) transition. Dynamical scaling analysis demonstrates that a perfect collapse of current-voltage data can be achieved. The obtained critical exponents agree with those in equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations, and are compatible with those observed in various experiments on high-T-c cuprate superconductors. It is suggested that the spin and the chirality order simultaneously. A genuine continuous depinning transition is found at zero temperature. For low temperature creep motion, critical exponents are evaluated, and a non-Arrhenius creep motion is observed in the low temperature ordered phase. It is proposed that the XY spin glass gives an effective description of the transport properties in high-T-c superconductors with d-wave symmetry.

Abstract:Using Monte Carlo simulations we study the two-dimensional Ising model on triangular, square, and hexagonal lattices with various topologies. We focus on the behavior of the magnetic susceptibility and of the specific heat near the critical point of the planar bulk system. We find that scaling functions of these quantities on the spherical surface (Euler characteristic K = 2) differ from the scaling functions on the projective plane (K = 1) which, in turn, differ from the scaling functions on the torus and on the Klein bottle (both K = 0). This provides strong evidence that phase transitions of the Ising model on two-dimensional surfaces depend on their topologies.

Abstract:We numerically study a triangulated surface model in R2 by taking into account a viewpoint of string model. The models are defined by a mapping X from a two-dimensional surface M to R2, where the mapping X and the metric g of M are the dynamical variables. The sum over g in the partition function is simulated by the sum over bond lengths and deficit angles by using the Regge calculus technique, and the sum over g is defined to be performed independently of the sum over X. We find that the model undergoes a first-order transition of surface fluctuations, which accompanies a collapsing transition, and that the transitions are reflected in the internal geometry of surface. Fluid surface models are also studied on dynamically triangulated surfaces, and the transitions are found to be of second order. The order of the transition remains unchanged from that of the conventional model defined only by the variable X both in the fixed-connectivity and the fluid models.

Abstract:We have performed Monte Carlo simulations of the Ising model coupled to three-dimensional quantum gravity based on a summation over dynamical triangulations. These were done both in the microcanonical ensemble, with the number of points in the triangulation and the number of Ising spins fixed, and in the grand-canonical ensemble. We have investigated the two possible cases of the spins living on the vertices of the triangulation (direct case) and the spins living in the middle of the tetrahedra (dual case). We observed phase transitions which are probably second order, and found that the dual implementation more effectively couples the spins to the quantum gravity.

Abstract:The geometric frustration of the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on the triangulated Kagome (triangles-in-triangles) lattice is investigated within the framework of an exact analytical method based on the generalized star-triangle mapping transformation. Ground-state and finite-temperature phase diagrams are obtained along with other exact results for the partition function, Helmholtz free energy, internal energy, entropy, and specific heat, by establishing a precise mapping relationship to the corresponding spin-1/2 Ising model on the Kagome lattice. It is shown that the residual entropy of the disordered spin liquid phase is for the quantum Ising-Heisenberg model significantly lower than for its semi-classical Ising limit (S_0/N_T k_B = 0.2806 and 0.4752, respectively), which implies that quantum fluctuations partially lift a macroscopic degeneracy of the ground-state manifold in the frustrated regime. The investigated model system has an obvious relevance to a series of polymeric coordination compounds Cu_9X_2(cpa)_6 (X=F, Cl, Br and cpa=carboxypentonic acid) for which we made a theoretical prediction about the temperature dependence of zero-field specific heat.

Abstract:We describe a Monte Carlo procedure for the simulation of dynamically triangulate random surfaces with a boundary (topology of a disk). The algorithm keeps the total number of triangles fixed, while the length of the boundary is allowed to fluctuate. The algorithm works in the presence of matter fields. We here present results for the pure gravity case. The algorithm reproduces the theoretical expectations.

Abstract:With a large-scale Monte Carlo simulation, the aging of the two-dimensional dynamic Ising and XY models is numerically studied. Starting from a disordered state, the systems are quenched to critical temperature Tc and then evolve according to dynamics of model A. By calculating the autocorrelation function A(t,t′) we observe the aging phenomenon for both spin systems. Then, relatively accurate values of the dynamic critical exponent λc and z are estimated. Especially, we confirm that for the two-dimensional XY model, there is a strong logarithmic correction to scaling in the dynamic relaxation starting from a completely disordered.

Abstract:Two-dimensional random surfaces are studied numerically by the dynamical triangulation method. In order to generate various kinds of random surfaces, two higher derivative terms are added to the action. The phases of surfaces in the two-dimensional parameter space are classified into three states: flat, crumpled surface, and branched polymer. In addition, there exists a special point (pure gravity) corresponding to the universal fractal surface. A new probe to detect branched polymers is proposed, which makes use of the minbu(minimum neck baby universe) analysis. This method can clearly distinguish the branched polymer phase from another according to the sizes and arrangements of baby universes. The size distribution of baby universes changes drastically at the transition point between the branched polymer and other kind of surface. The phases of surfaces coupled with multi-Ising spins are studied in a similar manner.

An improved algorithm for dynamical triangulations and simulations of finer lattices

Abstract:We introduce a new algorithm for the simulation of Euclidean dynamical triangulations that mimics the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm, but where all proposed moves are accepted. This rejection-free algorithm allows for the factorization of local and global terms in the action, a condition needed for efficient simulation of theories with global terms, while still maintaining detailed balance. We test our algorithm on the $2d$ Ising model, and against results for EDT obtained with standard Metropolis. Our new algorithm allows us to simulate EDT at finer lattice spacings than previously possible, and we find geometries that resemble semiclassical Euclidean de Sitter space in agreement with earlier results at coarser lattices. The agreement between lattice data and the classical de Sitter solution continues to get better as the lattice spacing decreases.

Abstract:Interacting quantum spin models are remarkably useful for describing different types of physical, chemical, and biological systems. Significant understanding of their equilibrium properties has been achieved to date, especially for the case of spin models with short-range couplings. However, progress towards the development of a comparable understanding in long-range interacting models, in particular out-of-equilibrium, remains limited. In a recent work, we proposed a semiclassical numerical method to study spin models, the discrete truncated Wigner approximation (DTWA), and demonstrated its capability to correctly capture the dynamics of one- and two-point correlations in one dimensional (1D) systems. Here we go one step forward and use the DTWA method to study the dynamics of correlations in 2D systems with many spins and different types of long-range couplings, in regimes where other numerical methods are generally unreliable. We compute spatial and time-dependent correlations for spin-couplings that decay with distance as a power-law and determine the velocity at which correlations propagate through the system. Sharp changes in the behavior of those velocities are found as a function of the power-law decay exponent. Our predictions are relevant for a broad range of systems including solid state materials, atom-photon systems and ultracold gases of polar molecules, trapped ions, Rydberg, and magnetic atoms. We validate the DTWA predictions for small 2D systems and 1D systems, but ultimately, in the spirt of quantum simulation, experiments will be needed to confirm our predictions for large 2D systems.

Abstract:The dynamical triangulations approach to quantum gravity is investigated in detail for the first time in five dimensions. In this case, the most general action that is linear in components of the f-vector has three terms. It was suspected that the corresponding space of couplings would yield a rich phase structure. This work is primarily motivated by the hope that this new viewpoint will lead to a deeper understanding of dynamical triangulations in general. Ultimately, this research programme may give a better insight into the potential application of dynamical triangulations to quantum gravity. This thesis serves as an exploratory study of this uncharted territory. The five dimensional (k,l) moves used in the Monte Carlo algorithm are proven to be ergodic in the space of combinatorially equivalent simplicial 5-manifolds. A statement is reached regarding the possible existence of an exponential upper bound on the number of combinatorially equivalent triangulations of the 5-sphere. Monte Carlo simulations reveal non-trivial phase structure which is analysed in some detail. Further investigations deal with the geometric and fractal nature of triangulations. This is followed by a characterisation of the weak coupling limit in terms of stacked spheres. Simple graph theory arguments are used to reproduce and generalise a well-known result in combinatorial topology. Finally, a comprehensive study of singular structures in dynamical triangulations is presented. It includes a new understanding of their existence, which appears to be consistent with the non-existence of singular vertices in three dimensions. The thesis is concluded with an overview of results, general discussion and suggestions for future work.

Abstract:We compute the zero temperature dynamical structure factor $S({\bf q},\omega)$ of the triangular lattice Heisenberg model using a Schwinger Boson approach that includes the Gaussian fluctuations ($1/N$ correction) of the saddle point solution. While the ground state of this model exhibits a well-known 120$^{\circ}$ magnetic ordering, the excitation spectrum revealed by $S({\bf q},\omega)$ has a strong quantum character that is not captured by low-order $1/S$ expansions. The low-energy magnons consist of two spinon bound states confined by gauge fluctuations of the auxiliary fields, which can produce internal structure of the magnon peaks. In addition, the high-energy continuum of spinon modes extends up to about three times the single-magnon bandwidth.

Abstract:We study numerically a model of fluid membrane with fixed triangulation, where the number of bonds per molecule is made as uniform as possible. The action of the model is dependent on the triangulation of surfaces. We pay special attention to whether or not the observables are dependent on the triangulation at the critical point of the second-order phase transition. By making use of different triangulated surfaces, we observe that the specific heat is divergent at the critical point and that the observables of the model seem to be independent of the triangulations. From the peak height of the specific heat, we obtain a critical exponent of the phase transition. We see that the critical exponents of the models of fixed triangulation and of the dynamical one are not identical.

Abstract:Quantum dimer models are known to host topological quantum spin liquid phases, and it has recently become possible to simulate such models with Rydberg atoms trapped in arrays of optical tweezers. Here, we present large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulation results on an extension of the triangular lattice quantum dimer model with terms in the Hamiltonian annihilating and creating single dimers. We find distinct odd and even $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquids, along with several phases with no topological order: a staggered crystal, a nematic phase, and a trivial symmetric phase with no obvious broken symmetry. We also present dynamic spectra of the phases, and note implications for experiments on Rydberg atoms.

Abstract:We investigate a new phase structure of the three-dimensional dynamical triangulation model with an additional local term by Monte Carlo simulation. We find that the first order phase transition observed for the naive Einstein-Hilbert action terminates at a finite coefficient of the new term. The phase transition turns into second order at the endpoint, beyond which it becomes a crossover.

Abstract:We investigated numerically the critical scaling and universality in the short-time dynamics for the spin models on the two-dimensional triangle lattices. By using the dynamic Monte Carlo simulations, the critical exponents θ, ζ and β/ν are estimated from short-time dynamic scaling relations and the power-law behavior of the magnetization, auto-correlation and the second magnetic moment. Our results confirmed the universality proposal.

Abstract:The magnetization behavior and spin configurations of anisotropic triangular spin-chain systems are investigated using Monte Carlo simulations based on two- and three-dimensional Ising models, in order to understand the fascinating magnetic phenomena observed in Ca3Co2O6 compound. By taking into account the strong intrachain ferromagnetic interaction and relatively weak interchain antiferromagnetic interaction, the simulations reproduce quantitatively the temperature-dependent magnetization behaviors against external magnetic field at low temperature. We present the one-to-one correspondence between the magnetizations and the nearest-neighboring pattern-count/spin snapshots, and demonstrate that the steplike magnetizations are ascribed to the inhomogeneous in-plane spin configurations and ferrimagnetically ordered equilibrium state. It is indicated that for the multistep magnetizations that appeared at low temperature, the substeps are always equidistant and the interval of critical magnetic field for spin flip keeps on 1.2 T. However, the inhomogeneity of the spin configurations makes a mean field approach to the magnetization behavior unsuccessful in predicting the multistep magnetizations.

Abstract:We compute the zero-temperature dynamical structure factor S(q, omega) of the triangular lattice Heisenberg model (TLHM) using a Schwinger boson approach that includes the Gaussian fluctuations (1/N corrections) of the saddle-point solution. While the ground state of this model exhibits a well-known 120 degrees magnetic ordering, experimental observations have revealed a strong quantum character of the excitation spectrum. We conjecture that this phenomenon arises from the proximity of the ground state of the TLHM to the quantum melting point separating the magnetically ordered and spin-liquid states. Within this scenario, magnons are described as collective modes (two-spinon bound states) of a spinon condensate (Higgs phase) that spontaneously break the SU(2) symmetry of the TLHM. Crucial to our results is the proper account of this spontaneous symmetry breaking. The main qualitative difference relative to semiclassical treatments (1/S expansion) is the presence of a high-energy spinon continuum extending up to about three times the single-magnon bandwidth. In addition, the magnitude of the ordered moment (m = 0.224) agrees very well with numerical results and the low-energy part of the single-magnon dispersion is in very good agreement with series expansions. Our results indicate that the Schwinger boson approach is an adequate starting point for describing the excitation spectrum of some magnetically ordered compounds that are near the quantum melting point separating this Higgs phase from the deconfined spin-liquid state.
