Abstract:Solar-induced photothermal catalysis of water splitting is a promising method to produce hydrogen and could be promoted by surface defects, especially oxygen vacancies on the surfaces of metal oxides. The interaction between water and surface is likely to lead to the formation of oxygen vacancies and alters the pathway of overall water splitting. The complete free energy profiles of the two different pathways on the anatase TiO2 (101) surface are calculated based on density functional theory, and hydrogen evolution is found to be the rate-determining step. The doping of Fe and Cu both reduces the energy barriers of oxygen vacancy formation but has different effects on hydrogen evolution on oxygen vacancies. The balance between the formation and reactivity of surface oxygen vacancies is the key factor for the pathway preference for water splitting. Therefore, the two different pathways of overall water splitting on the surfaces of metal oxides should be taken into consideration for photothermal catalyst design and screening.
Effect of oxygen vacancy concentration on the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance of anatase TiO2: DFT and experimental studies

Abstract:Oxygen vacancies (OVs) are important for changing the geometric and electronic structure as well as the chemical properties of anatase TiO2. In this work, we performed a density functional theory (DFT) calculation on the electronic structure and catalytic performance of anatase TiO2 (101) with different numbers of OVs. A comparison of the measured XRD results with the simulated ones of TiO2 demonstrates that OVs can cause changes in the crystal structure. The changes in the electronic structure (Mulliken charges, band structure, and partial density of states) and water splitting on TiO2 (101) surfaces were investigated as a function of oxygen vacancy concentration. The results show that the introduction of OVs forms impurity levels below the conduction band of Ti 3d orbitals, through which electrons can gradually transit from VB to CB. However, when oxygen vacancy concentration is too high, the maximum electron transition energy increases and the promotion effect of OVs on water splitting is weakened. This work would provide more enlightenment and information for the design of defective TiO2 with higher photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Ferroelectric materials hold great promise in the field of photocatalytic water splitting due to their spontaneous polarization that sets up an inherent internal field for the spatial separation of photogenerated charges. The ferroelectric polarization, however, is generally accompanied by some intrinsic defects, particularly oxygen vacancies, whose impact upon photocatalysis is far from being fully understood and modulated. Here, we have studied the role of oxygen vacancies over the photocatalytic behavior of single-domain PbTiO3 through a combination of theoretical and experimental viewpoints. Our results indicate that the oxygen vacancies in the negatively polarized facet (001) are active sites for water oxidation into O2, while the defect-free sites prefer H2O2 as the oxidation product. The apparent quantum yield at 435 nm for photocatalytic overall water splitting with PbTiO3/Rh/Cr2O3 is determined to be 0.025%, which is remarkable for single undoped metal oxide-based photocatalysts. Furthermore, the strong correlation among oxygen vacancies, polarization strength, and photocatalytic activity is properly reflected by charge separation conditions in the single-domain PbTiO3. This work clarifies the crucial role of oxygen vacancies during photocatalytic reactions of PbTiO3, which provides a useful guide to the design of efficient ferroelectric photocatalysts and their water redox reaction pathways.

Abstract:The high-efficiency separation and transfer of photogenerated electrons and holes are significant to achieve highly photoelectrochemical water redox efficiency. Here, we integrate anatase TiO2 with moderate oxygen vacancies and ZnFe-LDH cocatalyst on 3D homojunction r-TiO2(rutile TiO2)/a-TiO2(anatase TiO2) photoanode to promote the separation and transfer efficiency of carriers for a high photoelectrochemical activity. The as-prepared r-TiO2/a-TiO2/ZnFe-LDH photoanode demonstrates an enhanced photocurrent density of 1.86 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE and the onset potential of 0.26 V vs. RHE, 2.55 times and 100 mV cathodic shift by contrast with those of bare r-TiO2. The experimental and calculated results suggest the improved electron transport by oxygen vacancies and r-TiO2/a-TiO2 with matched energy bands, along with the accelerated hole capture and facilitated surface oxygen production reaction kinetics by cocatalyst ZnFe-LDH. The compare researches for the sample without the oxygen vacancies are introduced to further illustrate the increased carrier concentration and conductivity caused by oxygen vacancies. This work manifests the effective use of oxygen vacancies in regulating carriers transport and provides a novel strategy for manufacturing high-performance photoanodes in photoelectrochemical water splitting.

This work could provide new insights into the understanding of the photocatalytic activity enhancement by the surface oxygen vacancies.

Abstract:A consensus is yet to be reached on the effects of oxygen vacancy (V-O) on the performance of TiO2 for photocatalytic water splitting as contrasting viewpoints have been presented in the latest researches. Herein, a comprehensive set of spectroelectrochemical methods are deployed to clearly reveal the advantages and disadvantages of V-O on the performance of TiO2. The results indicate that surface V-O improves the photocatalytic activity while bulk V-O has a negative effect on the water reduction performance of TiO2. Intensity-modulated photocurrent spectroscopy (IMPS) and UV-vis spectroscopy provide compelling evidence that the improvement of H-2 evolution can be attributed to the presence of defect level, while the low interface charge transfer efficiency caused by surface VO limits the further improvement of photocatalytical H-2 evolution, which can be alleviated by an organic hole transport coating. The density functional theory (DFT) and surface photovoltaic (SPV) analyses confirm that the built-in field between TiO2 and hole molecules is the reason for the interface charge transfer efficiency improvement. Our findings provide a comprehensive understanding of VO in TiO2 by carrier behavior analysis and a scheme to further promote the photocatalytic performance. (c) 2022 Elsevier Inc. Interplay between Collective and Localized Effects of Point Defects on Photoelectrochemical Performance of TiO2 Photoanodes for Oxygen Evolution

Abstract:The study presents a successful modification of anatase TiO2 photoanodes with point defects such as oxygen and titanium vacancies to have both collective and localized effects that boost their photoelectrochemical performance. The improved performance is due to enhanced light absorption, conductivity, and photovoltage, as well as a more negative flat‐band potential and increase in hole flux to the semiconductor–electrolyte interface. Among the various photoanode materials investigated for photoelectrochemical water splitting cells, TiO2 stands out due to its abundance, stability, and favorable valence band edge for water oxidation. In this study, the importance of introducing and combining oxygen and titanium vacancy point defects in anatase TiO2 photoanodes to improve their performance is unveiled, achieving a photocurrent density of 0.73 (±0.015) mA cm−2 at +1.23 VRHE under 100 mW cm−2 of simulated sunlight or 26.4 mA cm−2 at +1.23 VRHE under 100 mW cm−2 of 365 nm light. The characterization by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, surface photovoltage, and electron paramagnetic resonance demonstrates that these oxygen and titanium vacancies can have both collective and localized positive effects on the material, leading to a narrowing of the bandgap, an increase in donor density, and an increase in hydroxyl groups on the surface of TiO2. These result in enhanced light absorption, conductivity, and photovoltage, as well as a more negative flat‐band potential and increase in hole flux to the semiconductor–electrolyte interface. These findings provide valuable insights into the role of point defects in modulating the properties of TiO2 and have important implications for the development of high‐performance TiO2‐based devices.

Computational Simulation of Trapped Charge Carriers in TiO2 and Their Impacts on Photocatalytic Water Splitting

Abstract:Titania dioxide (TiO2) stands out as one of the most promising photocatalytic materials in the fields related to energy and environment. Despite extensive experimental studies on TiO2-based systems in photocatalysis, knowledge at the atomic scale on the physical characteristics and catalytic impacts of trapped photo-charges, catalytic mechanisms and kinetics of photoreactions, remains largely elusive. Density functional theory calculations, either with proper on-site Coulomb interaction correction (DFT+U) or via hybrid functional methods (e.g. HSE06), have been widely conducted to elucidate the above scientific issues. In this chapter, we present calculated results regarding the geometric and electronic features of radical species, the impacts of trapped electrons or holes on surface catalytic events, the electron transfer across the metal/TiO2 interfaces, the size-dependent activity of platinum cocatalysts, and complete pathways and kinetic trends for photocatalytic oxygen evolution (OER). We show that surface oxygens with low coordination, such as the hydroxyl group and bridge oxygen, are generally efficient hole traps, which however become less effective in trapping holes in the presence of liquid water owing to the stabilization via H-bonds. A novel proton promoted electron transfer mechanism and the optimal morphology of supported platinum nanoparticles in photocatalytic hydrogen production were evidenced from our results, rationalizing many intriguing experimental observations. The key obstacle that limits OER efficiency was identified as the low concentration of surface-reaching holes rather than the inadequate catalytic activity of TiO2. These results may provide a new scenario for understanding the complicated photochemistry and assisting the photocatalyst design toward better water splitting efficiency.

Abstract:Solar-induced photothermal catalytic H2O splitting is a promising method for H-2 production. On metal oxides, the interaction between H2O and the surface can lead to the formation of oxygen vacancies (VOs) and alter the reaction pathway for overall H2O splitting. Herein, the free energy profiles of two different pathways on the In2O3 (110) surface are calculated based on density functional theory, and the relation between surface VO formation and the reactivity of surface VOs reveals that surface VOs with a lower formation energy are more unfavorable for H-2 evolution. Doping In2O3 with a transition metal can effectively enhance the electron transfer from the surface O atoms to the doped metal, benefitting the formation of surface VOs and causing the doped metal to become the active reaction center for H2O splitting.

Abstract:The practicality of photoanodes for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting was severely hampered by poor bulk photo-carrier separation and slow surface reaction kinetics. Here, we report an oxygen vacancy-enriched TiO2 photoanode modified by a highly crystalline TiO2 layer with enhanced bulk photo-carrier separation and surface reaction kinetics through stepwise gas diffusion at elevated temperatures. Experimental studies reveal that the reduction treatment introduces oxygen vacancy to TiO2, thereby increasing the charge carrier concentration and shifting the Fermi level to conduction band. The oxidation treatment affects the oxygen vacancy distribution of TiO2 surface which forms a suitable Fermi energy difference with the bulk, thus accelerating the carriers’ drift near to semiconductor/electrolyte interface. The as-obtained TiO2 photoanode exhibits an enhanced photocurrent density of 2.26 mA cm−2 at +1.23 V vs. RHE which is 2.75 times higher than that of the pristine TiO2. Hence, the present work illustrates the great potential of oxygen vacancy engineering via simple gas annealing treatment for Fermi level manipulation that can be further explored to other metal oxide semiconductors to design highly efficient oxygen vacancy enriched crystalline PEC photoelectrodes and provides novel insights into contact interfaces between semiconductors and electrolytes in PEC water splitting.

Photo-thermal Coupling Water Splitting over Fe-doped TiO2 with Various Nanostructures

Abstract:Oxygen vacancy (V-O) is an important part of the defect engineering. The direct thermal application of reductive photo-induced V-O has been regarded as an effective way for solar utilization in the field of hydrogen production from pure water splitting. Based on TiO2 nanomaterials synthesized by various preparation methods, the performance of pure water splitting in photo-thermal coupling was tested on a variety of topography TiO2 samples and its promoted form with Fe ions doping. The high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) were utilized for the observation of crystal characteristics. The diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), photoluminescence (PL) and electrochemical characterization were applied to compare the materials properties. Moreover, the whole water splitting reaction pathway was performed via density functional theory (DFT). Compared with hydrothermal nanosheets and nanowires, the nanoparticles prepared by sol-gel own abundant defects, resulting in a decline in hydrogen yield. To increase the photo-induced V-O generation during the photo reaction, which takes the highest energy barriers, the Fe doping was introduced into the nanomaterials, with the advantages of extended photoresponse, enhanced electron-hole pairs separation, prolonged carriers lifetime and decreased impedance. Meanwhile, defects in nanomaterials promote effective doping of Fe atoms, the average hydrogen yield on Fe-doped TiO2 nanoparticles is 9.73 mu mol/g in photo-thermal coupling reaction, which is almost 13 times to the bare TiO2. The comparison and modification of nano TiO2 with various morphologies provide a new approach for the solar functional materials.

Abstract:There is intense interest in developing new novel nanostructured photoanodes for water splitting. It is therefore important that methods to analyze the effect of nanostructuring on water splitting yields are developed in order to rationalize the relative merits of this approach for different materials. In this study the dependence of charge separation efficiency (eta(sep)) on potential during photoelectrochemical water splitting at pH 2 has been quantified in a model electrode system (nanocrystalline, mesoporous TiO2) using two independent methods. These are (i) analysis of incident photon conversion efficiency (IPCE) measurements and (ii) transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy measurements. The techniques provide good agreement with each other and show that a low maximum value of eta(sep) (similar to 0.18) is the primary cause of the low IPCE for water oxidation on these nc-TiO2 electrodes.

Abstract:To reveal the role of oxygen vacancies in the solar water oxidation of α-Fe2O3 photoanodes, the kinetic and thermodynamic properties that are closely related to the water oxidation reaction of the α-Fe2O3 photoanode containing oxygen vacancies were investigated. Compared with the pristine α-Fe2O3 photoanode, the presence of surface oxygen vacancies can improve the water oxidation activity and stability of the α-Fe2O3 photoanode simultaneously, but the bulk oxygen vacancies have a negative effect on the water oxidation performance of the α-Fe2O3 photoanode. In thermodynamics, our investigations revealed that the presence of surface oxygen vacancies narrows the space charge region width of the α-Fe2O3 photoanode, which could boost the charge separation and transfer efficiency of the α-Fe2O3 photoanode during water oxidation. Because the surface property and hydrophilicity of α-Fe2O3 are modified owing to the presence of surface oxygen vacancies, the water oxidation kinetics of the α-Fe2O3 photoanode with surface oxygen vacancies is obviously boosted. Our findings in the present work provide comprehensive understanding of the thermodynamic and kinetic differences for α-Fe2O3 photoanodes with and without oxygen vacancies for solar water oxidation.

Abstract:Oxygen vacancies (O-v) are widely considered to play crucial roles in photocatalysis, but how and why they contribute to improved performances remains controversial. In this work, we studied the promotional effect of O-v on photoelectron transfer in TiO2, using first-principles density functional theory calculations with correction for on-site Coulomb interactions. We explicitly identified three types of O-v with different charge states (i.e., charge-neutral , monovalent , divalent O-v(2+)) via electronic structure analysis. Electron transfer energy calculations revealed that the ionized O-v in anatase TiO2 are able to collect excess electrons whereas those in the rutile phase are not. The presence of ionized O-v further endows anatase TiO2 with directional electron transfer along the [100] orientation, in favor of anatase TiO2(101) for photocatalytic reduction surpassing the (001) termination. After examining various combination modes of ionized O-v involving different charge states and spatial distributions, we demonstrated that the vertical chain in anatase TiO2(101) is the most catalytically effective O-v pattern in TiO2. These results signify the importance of subtle defects in photocatalysis and may assist future photocatalyst design toward higher photocatalytic efficiency.

Abstract:Oxygen deficiency control has become an on-looming strategy for improving the catalytic ability of semiconductors, while the impact of defect distribution on the separation of charge carriers is still an open question. Compared to pristine TiO2, significantly improved photoelectrochemical performance is achieved through suppressing intrinsic defects in Bi2WO6 and tuning the formation sites of interfacial oxygen vacancies. Both experimental and theoretical investigations demonstrate that the distribution of interfacial oxygen vacancies around interface of Bi2WO6 and in the TiO2 side is beneficial for the efficient extraction of photogenerated electrons toward counter electrodes. This research shed atomic-level insight into the interfacial modulation of defect distribution. Therefore, it provides a new principle to develop efficient heterostructures for photoelectrochemical and photocatalytic applications.
Impact of Oxygen Vacancy on Band Structure Engineering of N-P Codoped Anatase Tio2

Abstract:Doping with various impurities is an effective approach to improve the photoelectrochemical properties of TiO2. Here, we explore the effect of oxygen vacancy on geometric and electronic properties of compensated (i.e. V-N and Cr-C) and non-compensated (i.e. V-C and Cr-N) codoped anatase TiO2 by performing extensive density functional theory calculations. Theoretical results show that oxygen vacancy prefers to the neighboring site of metal dopant (i.e. V or Cr atom). After introduction of oxygen vacancy, the unoccupied impurity bands located within band gap of these codoped TiO2 will be filled with electrons, and the position of conduction band offset does not change obviously, which result in the reduction of photoinduced carrier recombination and the good performance for hydrogen production via water splitting. Moreover, we find that oxygen vacancy is easily introduced in V-N codoped TiO2 under O-poor condition. These theoretical insights are helpful for designing codoped TiO2 with high photoelectrochemical performance.

Abstract:The significant effect of impurities or defects,especially oxygen vacancies,on the TiO2-based photocatalysts has intensively attracted much attention according to plentiful researches in these decades.Here,the main methods of introducing oxygen vacancies into the TiO2 are reviewed.Then the influence of oxygen vacancies on the properties of TiO2 is briefly discussed,such as visible light absorption,energy band structure,and photocatalytic performance,etc.Additionally,the controllability of oxygen vacancies is emphasized and then the challenges and opportunities of the application of TiO2-based photocatalysts in the future are pointed out.

Abstract:Improvements to solar water oxidation performance for WO3 photo anodes due to oxygen vacancies have in general been ascribed to thermodynamic effects. Detailed insights into the water oxidation kinetics for WO3 photoanodes with oxygen vacancies are still lacking. Here, our experimental and computational investigations revealed that the water oxidation pathway on WO3 photoanodes with oxygen vacancies is more inclined to follow the four-hole pathway. This finding reasonably explained the common observations of higher faradaic efficiency for oxygen evolution, better stability, and faster kinetics for water oxidation usually achieved on the WO3 photoanodes with oxygen vacancies.
