Abstract:Natural organisms such as cactus spines or trachea cilia have unique directional transport ability, owing to their anisotropic surface structures or asymmetric motion. However, most artificial interfacial materials are incapable of transporting macroscale object underwater. Herein, we report that anisotropic microcilia arrays, composed of cobalt fine powder and PDMS, can successfully transport the centimeter-scale hydrogel underwater by periodically asymmetric stroke under alternative magnetic field. Reciprocal collective stroke of anisotropic microcilia can generate directional flow, propelling the centimeter-scale hydrogel slice forward. Accompanying computational simulation results are consistent with the directional transport behaviors observed in our experiments. This study provides a clue to design artificial anisotropic interfacial materials with capability of transporting macroscale object at low Reynolds number.

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">Bio-inspired surfaces are usually designed by imitating the surface properties of a particular biological species, or combing with the surface characteristics of multiple biological species to construct a cross-species surface. Herein, inspired by the structure and rhythmic swing of human pulmonary cilia, and the directional migration of pigeons by geomagnetic field, an integrated system of biomimetic hydrophobic magnetic cilia array surface with reversible deformation properties and excellent magnetic response performance for solid microspheres underwater transport is designed and constructed. Driven by an external magnetic field, the magnetic responsive cilia array surface can directionally and continuously transport microspheres underwater in periodic motion. This work will shed new light on the designing of micromanipulation systems for micro-objects transport, and promote the practical application of micro-operating systems in underwater transportation and drug delivery.</p>

Bio-Inspired Magnetically Responsive Silicone Cilia: Fabrication Strategy and Interaction with Biological Mucus

Abstract:Cilia are biological structures essential to drive the mobility of secretions and maintain the proper function of the respiratory airways. However, this motile self-cleaning process is significantly compromised in the presence of silicone tracheal prosthesis, leading to biofilm growth and impeding effective treatment. To address this challenge and enhance the performance of these devices, we propose the fabrication of magnetic silicone cilia, with the prospect of their integration onto silicone prostheses. The present study presents a fabrication method based on magnetic self-assembly and assesses the interaction behavior of the cilia array with biological mucus. This protocol allows for the customization of cilia dimensions across a wide range of aspect ratios (from 6 to 85) and array densities (from 10 to 80 cilia/mm2) by adjusting the fabrication parameters, offering flexibility for adjustments according to their required characteristics. Furthermore, we evaluated the suitability of different cilia arrays for biomedical applications by analyzing their interaction with bullfrog mucus, simulating the airways environment. Our findings demonstrate that the fabricated cilia are mechanically resistant to the viscous fluid and still exhibit controlled movement under the influence of an external moving magnet. A correlation between cilia dimensions and mucus wettability profile suggests a potential role in facilitating mucus depuration, paving the way for further advancements aimed at enhancing the performance of silicone prostheses in clinical settings.

Abstract:The accurate and efficient manipulation of particles and droplets is crucial for the fields of disease diagnosis, target drug delivery, and sample purification, specific microstructure-based particle and droplet manipulation have been widely utilized in bioassays. However, current techniques are mainly based on the fixed microstructures, which is extremely difficult to achieve dynamic modulation by adjusting microstructure morphology and excitation conditions. Herein, we present a novel particle capture and droplet manipulation methodology by using morphologically reconfigurable magnetic micropillar arrays incorporate with acoustic streaming effects, which enables reconfigurable particle capturing, cargo transportation, and droplet manipulation. The mechanism is to assemble NdFeB magnetic powders by magnetic gradient fields to form morphologically variable magnetic micropillar arrays with porous surfaces, and the localized acoustic streaming effects generated by surface acoustic waves (SAWs) enable micropillar arrays to capture nearby particles onto the surfaces or to drive perturbations in droplets in the vicinity. To demonstrate the capabilities of this technology, we have achieved the high-volume acoustofluidic particle capture and loading (0.214 MCF), targeted complex maze navigation, efficient droplets manipulation (≤ 3.96mm/s), and acoustofluidic mixing acceleration (≤ 2.5s). Therefore, this technique enables reconfigurable and versatile manipulation of particles and droplets in biomedical applications.

Abstract:Through the rational fusion of bioinspiration from the G. viridula's feet setae and the directional migration of pigeons by the geomagnetic field, an integrated, flexible microcilia array surface is presented with magnetic responsiveness and superaerophobic properties for underwater bubble manipulation. Under an alternant external magnetic field, underwater bubbles can be continuously and directionally transported on a superaerophobic flexible magnetic microcilia array surface.The manipulation of underwater bubbles is of great significance in scientific research and industrial applications since they are ubiquitous and inevitable in production and life, for example, in agriculture and industry processes. Unfortunately, in an aqueous environment, the bubbles are mainly dominated by buoyancy and move upward, which makes the manipulation of bubbles difficult. To this end, numerous materials have been designed to manipulate bubbles. However, almost all of the existing materials are based on the superaerophilic surface, which has low controllability of bubble and cannot switch the transport velocity. Therefore, realizing the efficient, non‐destructive, and reversible manipulation of bubbles remains a great challenge. Herein, a novel strategy combining the superaerophobic wettability with magnetic response microcilia structure surface to achieve efficient, lossless, and reversible manipulation of bubbles is proposed. The surface can not only realize the non‐destructive manipulation of bubbles with different volumes, but also adjust the bubble transport velocity by adjusting the magnetic field. This study provides a reference for the application of bubbles in more fields and provides a basis for the development and research of expanding the application of microfluidic technology in the future.

Abstract:A ciliary airway stent is proposed to transport viscous mucus in a lung phantom even faster than the respiratory cilia in a healthy human lung. The proposed methods of designing, integrating, and controlling artificial cilia on 3D curved surfaces enable unprecedented functions of removing excessive mucus beyond traditional airway stents for treating various lung diseases in a minimally invasive manner. Small‐scale cilia‐like devices that can manipulate fluids in narrow spaces have great potential in microfluidics, biomechanics, biomedical engineering, and other applications. However, prior studies mostly focus on artificial cilia for pumping fluids in lab‐on‐a‐chip microfluidic applications. The design and control of artificial cilia for transporting viscous mucus in confined and tubular structures remain challenging and medical devices such as airway stents with ciliary function are still missing. Herein, a method is reported that enables integrating artificial cilia arrays on 3D curved surfaces and an airway ciliary stent is presented for excessive mucus transportation. The method allows encoding bioinspired non‐reciprocal motion and metachronal waves for efficient fluid pumping in tubular structures. The method also introduces a lubricant hydrogel coating layer on artificial cilia inspired by the periciliary layer in airway cilia, which further enhances viscous fluid transportation. It is demonstrated that a novel ciliary airway stent can transport viscous porcine mucus in a lung phantom even faster than the respiratory cilia in a healthy human lung. The methods of designing, integrating, and controlling artificial cilia on 3D curved surfaces thus enable the unprecedented function of removing excessive mucus beyond traditional airway stents for treating various lung diseases in a minimally invasive manner.

Abstract:In this paper we quantitatively analyse the performance of magnetically-driven artificial cilia for lab-on-a-chip applications. The artificial cilia are fabricated using thin polymer films with embedded magnetic nano-particles and their deformation is studied under different external magnetic fields and flows. A coupled magneto-mechanical solid-fluid model that accurately captures the interaction between the magnetic field, cilia and fluid is used to simulate the cilia motion. The elastic and magnetic properties of the cilia are obtained by fitting the results of the computational model to the experimental data. The performance of the artificial cilia with a non-uniform cross-section is characterised using the numerical model for two channel configurations that are of practical importance: an open-loop and a closed-loop channel. We predict that the flow and pressure head generated by the artificial cilia can be as high as 18 microlitres per minute and 3 mm of water, respectively. We also study the effect of metachronal waves on the flow generated and show that the fluid propelled increases drastically compared to synchronously beating cilia, and is unidirectional. This increase is significant even when the phase difference between adjacent cilia is small. The obtained results provide guidelines for the optimal design of magnetically-driven artificial cilia for microfluidic propulsion.

Abstract:The artificial ciliary motion has been known not to be hydrodynamically optimal, limiting their associated applications in the microscale flow domain. One of the major hurdles of contemporary artificial cilia is its structural rigidity, which restricts their flexibility. To address this issue, this work proposed a shape-programmable artificial cilia design with distinctive polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and magnetic segments distributed throughout the structure, which provided precise control for time-spatial modulation of the whole artificial cilia structure under external magnetic actuation. For the fabrication of the proposed multi-segment artificial cilia, a facile microfabrication process with stepwise mold blocking followed by the PDMS and magnetic composite casting was adopted. The hydrodynamic analysis further elucidated that the proposed artificial cilia beating induced significant flow disturbance within the flow field, and the associated application was demonstrated through an efficient mixing operation.

Abstract:A novel, efficient, and controllable bubble transport strategy is presented by using magnetically steerable and heteromorphic bioinspired microcilia. The microscopic dynamic evolution behavior of bubble‐cilium interface is studied experimentally and theoretically. This research improves the applicability and flexibility of bubble manipulation and has potential in broader fields including microfluidics and robotics. Controllable transport of underwater gas bubbles is essential in various fields such as gas energy, drug delivery, and heat transfer. Although anisotropic structures are used to transport bubbles, their motion direction can only be adjusted to a limited extent because of weak structural anisotropy and small responsive deformation. Here, anisotropic bubble transport is found on microcilia surfaces of diving beetle's elytra with regular inclination and heteromorphic structure of microcilia, which have hooked tips and crescent‐shaped roots. Inspired by these, a magnetically steerable microcilia surface with large‐range inclination adjustment is proposed for highly controllable bubble transport via a heterogeneous configuration strategy. The dynamic in situ microscopic behavior shows a novel shifting phenomenon of the maximum bubble pinning position from bubble back interface for hydrophobic cilia to front interface for hydrophilic cilia under different cilium wettabilities. This shift varies the bubble shapes from unstable stretching to stable compression, thus increasing the difference in anisotropic transport by three times for hydrophilic cilia. Moreover, bioinspired heteromorphic structures can further enhance such difference by 5.5 times. Based on the proposed theory, several smart functional microcilia are designed to achieve more complex bubble manipulation, thus improving their suitability for widespread application.

Abstract:Biological cilia play essential roles in self-propulsion, food capture, and cell transportation by performing coordinated metachronal motions. Experimental studies to emulate the biological cilia metachronal coordination are challenging at the micrometer length scale because of current limitations in fabrication methods and materials. We report on the creation of wirelessly actuated magnetic artificial cilia with biocompatibility and metachronal programmability at the micrometer length scale. Each cilium is fabricated by direct laser printing a silk fibroin hydrogel beam affixed to a hard magnetic FePt Janus microparticle. The 3D-printed cilia show stable actuation performance, high temperature resistance, and high mechanical endurance. Programmable metachronal coordination can be achieved by programming the orientation of the identically magnetized FePt Janus microparticles, which enables the generation of versatile microfluidic patterns. Our platform offers an unprecedented solution to create bioinspired microcilia for programmable microfluidic systems, biomedical engineering, and biocompatible implants.

Abstract:In nature, fluid manipulation plays a crucial role in the life of organisms, which has attracted great attentions of research and industry. Here, a functional bionic cilia surface is designed via the simple magnetic field assistance and laser etching technique. Multidirectional droplet transportation occurs on superhydrophobic cilia surface, which has good mechanical, physical, and chemical stability. The as‐prepared surface covered with cilia in the superhydrophobic (WCA of 156 ± 2°) and hydrophobic (WCA of 119 ± 3°) area possess different adhesion state, which can be used for multiple chemical reactions as a microreaction platform. Furthermore, bionic cilia surface can be used as a transport tool in the analysis and detection with average transfer speed of 2.3 cm s−1, which provides new opportunities in the development of small analysis equipment. Importantly, magnetically induced bionic cilia surfaces have broad potential applications in developing smart surfaces, droplet control, lab‐on‐a‐chip, etc. The bionic cilia surfaces are prepared by magnetic‐assistant and laser etching method with advantages of strong regioselectivity, fast processing speed, and stable structure. On the superhydrophobic cilia surface, multidirectional droplets transportation can be realized. The biomimetic cilia surface can be used as a transport tool for microchemical reaction and detection platforms.

Abstract:This research provides a comprehensive exploration of the development and characterization of magnetically responsive microwall arrays (MRMAs), presenting a novel approach to precise droplet manipulation. The proposed fabrication process involves microscale wall arrays created using carbonyl iron particles (CIPs) embedded in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) through a replica molding process. The MRMAs demonstrate a unique response to magnetic fields, enabling precise control over droplet movement. Through superhydrophobic coatings, the system facilitates the efficient movement of droplets along predefined routes, achieving outstanding accuracy in droplet directionality and positioning with only a single direction of magnetic field control. The experiments highlight the capability of MRMAs to merge differently colored droplets, underscoring their potential in long-distance droplet transportation. The results suggest applications in microfluidic systems, lab-on-a-chip devices, and targeted drug delivery, marking a significant advancement in microfluidic research.

Abstract:In nature, many organisms have the ability to transport substances, such as bubbles, droplets, or solids, on demand to meet their survival needs. Inspired by these distinct behaviors, a variety of substance transport strategies have been developed for promising applications in microfluidics, microelectronics, and biomedicine. However, it is still challenging to achieve versatile multi-substance (gas, liquid, and solid) transport. In this work, a triple-biologically inspired lubricated slippery magnetic-responsive microplate array (LS-MMA) by integrating the characteristics of fish scales, Nepenthes peristome, and respiratory cilia is proposed for multi-substance transport. Under the actuation of the moving magnetic field, the microplates bend and overlap sequentially to form a continuous slippery surface with large curvature. With the continuous motion of the slippery surface, active multi-substance transport can be realized. The transport speed of the bubbles, droplets, and solid glass balls can reach approximate to 5, approximate to 14, and approximate to 80 mm s(-1), respectively. By virtue of the lubricant's capillary sticking property to the substance, the LS-MMA also realizes 3D on-demand transport of bubbles and droplets. The LS-MMA-based multi-substance transport strategy improves the applicability and flexibility of target manipulation and has a broad potential application in the fields of microchemical reactions and biomedical engineering.
Active Droplet Transport Induced by Moving Meniscus on a Slippery Magnetic Responsive Micropillar Array

Abstract:Intelligent droplet manipulation plays a crucial role in both scientific research and industrial technology. Inspired by nature, meniscus driving is an ingenious way to spontaneously transport droplets. However, the shortages of short-range transport and droplet coalescence limit its application. Here, an active droplet manipulation strategy based on the slippery magnetic responsive micropillar array (SMRMA) is reported. With the aid of a magnetic field, the micropillar array bends and induces the infusing oil to form a moving meniscus, which can attract nearby droplets and transport them for a long range. Significantly, clustered droplets on SMRMA can be isolated by micropillars, avoiding droplet coalescence. Moreover, through adjusting the arrangement of the micropillars of SMRMA, multi-functional droplet manipulation such as unidirectional droplet transport, multi-droplet transport, droplet mixing, and droplet screening can be achieved. This work provides a promising approach for intelligent droplet manipulation and unfolds broad application prospects in microfluidics, microchemical reaction, biomedical engineering, and other fields.

Abstract:Acoustic tweezers based on surface acoustic waves (SAWs) have raised great interest in the fields of tissue engineering, targeted therapy, and drug delivery. Generally, the complex structure and array layout design of interdigital electrodes would restrict the applications of acoustic tweezers. Here, we present a novel approach by using bisymmetric coherent acoustic tweezers to modulate the shape of acoustic pressure fields with high flexibility and accuracy. Experimental tests were conducted to perform the precise, contactless, and biocompatible cluster manipulation of polystyrene microparticles and yeast cells. Stripe, dot, quadratic lattice, hexagonal lattice, interleaved stripe, oblique stripe, and many other complex arrays were achieved by real-time modulation of amplitudes and phase relations of coherent SAWs to demonstrate the capability of the device for the cluster manipulation of particles and cells. Furthermore, rapid switching among various arrays, shape regulation, geometric parameter modulation of array units, and directional translation of microparticles and cells were implemented. This study demonstrated a favorable technique for flexible and versatile manipulation and patterning of cells and biomolecules, and it has the advantages of high manipulation accuracy and adjustability, thus it is expected to be utilized in the fields of targeted cellular assembly, biological 3D printing, and targeted release of drugs.

Abstract:Most microorganisms use hair-like cilia with asymmetric beating to perform vital bio-physical processes. In this paper, we demonstrate a novel fabrication method for creating magnetic artificial cilia capable of such biologically inspired asymmetrical beating pattern essential for creating microfluidic transport in low Reynolds number. The cilia are fabricated using a lithographic process in conjunction with deposition of magnetic nickel-iron permalloy to create flexible filaments that can be manipulated by varying an external magnetic field. A rotating permanent magnet is used to actuate the cilia. We examine the kinematics of a cilium and demonstrate that the cilium motion is defined by an interplay among elastic, magnetic, and viscous forces. Specifically, the forward stroke is induced by the rotation of the magnet which bends the cilium, whereas the recovery stroke is defined by the straightening of the deformed cilium, releasing the accumulated elastic potential energy. This difference in dominating forces acting during the forward stroke and the recovery stroke leads to an asymmetrical beating pattern of the cilium. Such magnetic cilia can find applications in microfluidic pumping, mixing, and other fluid handling processes.

Abstract:Bio-inspired materials are commonly used in the development of functional devices. The fabrication of artificial cilia mimicking the biological functions has emerged as a promising strategy for fluid manipulation in miniaturized systems. In this study, we propose a different physicochemical insight for the preparation of magnetic cilia based on the temperature-triggered reversible assembly of coated iron oxide nanoparticles in a bio-compatible template-free approach. The length of the prepared cilia could be tuned between 10 and 100 microns reaching aspect ratios up to 100 in a very dense array of flexible structures with persistence lengths around 8 microns. Magnetic actuation of the cilia revealed robust structures (over several hours of actuation) with a wide range of bending amplitudes resulting from high susceptibility of the filaments. The results demonstrate that the proposed strategy is an efficient and versatile alternative for templated fabrication methods and producing cilia with remarkable characteristics and dimensions within the template-free approaches.

Abstract:Artificial cilia actuators are described as responsive and actuatable cilia-structured arrays that are mainly made of flexible polymers. Over the past few decades, researchers have investigated the features and functions of cilia in nature, and have developed a vast number of bio-mimicked cilia based on these findings. Nowadays, great progresses are accomplished, including the optimization of the fabrication methods, the increase in the actuation approaches, and the promotion of the application fields. Artificial cilia are tailored to react to magnetics, electrics, light, acoustics, heat, or even multi-stimulus, and are endowed with abilities of moving, sensing, carrying cargos, transporting, etc. These achievements create a great leap for artificial cilia actuators being applied in a huge scope of forefront fields, such as digital microfluidics, organ-on-chip systems, precision medicine, wearable electro-devices, minimal robots, artificial intelligence, and so on.
