Abstract:The Beijing area has suffered from severe air pollution in recent years, including ozone pollution in the summer. In addition to the anthropogenic emissions inventory, understanding local ozone pollution requires a reliable biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emission inventory. Forest coverage rose from 20.6 to 35.8 % from 1998 to 2013 in Beijing according to the National Forest Resource Survey (NFRS), and accurate representations of land cover for recent years is crucial for estimating BVOC emissions and their impacts on air quality. In this study, we established a high-resolution BVOC emission inventory in Beijing using the Model of Emissions of Gases and Aerosols from Nature (MEGAN) v2.1 with three independent leaf area index (LAI) products and three independent land cover products. Various combinations of the Global LAnd Surface Satellite (GLASS), Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) MCD15, and GEOland (GEO) v2 LAI datasets and the Finer Resolution Observation and Monitoring of Global Land Cover (FROM-GLC), MODIS MCD12Q1 plant functional type (PFT) products, and Climate Change Initiative Land Cover (CCI LC) products are used in five model sensitivity experiments (E1–E5), and the experiment using the FROM-GLC with the highest spatial resolution of 30 m and GLASS LAI products was treated as the baseline. These sensitivity calculations were driven by hourly, 3 km meteorological fields from the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The following results were obtained: (1) according to the baseline estimate, the total amount of BVOC emissions is 75.9 Gg for the Beijing area, and isoprene, monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes and other VOCs account for 37.6, 14.6, 1.8 and 46 % of the total, respectively. Approximately three-quarters of BVOC emissions occur in the summer. (2) According to the sensitivity experiments, the LAI input does not significantly affect the BVOC emissions. Using MODIS MCD15Q1 and GEO v2 LAI led to slight declines of 2.6 and 1.4 %, respectively, of BVOC emissions in the same area. (3) The spatial distribution of PFTs from different inputs strongly influenced the spatial distribution of BVOC emissions. Furthermore, the cross-walking table for converting land cover classes to PFTs also has a strong impact on BVOC emissions; the sensitivity experiments showed that the estimate of BVOC emissions by CCI LC ranged from 42.1 to 70.2 Gg depending on the cross-walking table used.

In this study, by utilizing a recently released high-resolution land cover dataset, we develop the first set of emission inventories of U-BVOCs in China at spatial resolutions as high as 1 km. This new dataset resolved densely distributed U-BVOCs in urban core areas. The U-BVOC emissions in megacities could account for a large fraction of total BVOC emissions, and the good agreement of the interannual variations between the U-BVOC emissions and ozone concentrations over certain regions stresses their potentially crucial role in influencing ozone variations. The newly constructed U-BVOC emission inventory is expected to provide an improved dataset to enable the research community to re-examine the modulation of BVOCs on the formation of ozone, SOA, and atmospheric chemistry in urban environments.

An Inventory of Biogenic Volatile Organic Compounds for a Subtropical Urban–rural Complex

Abstract:Increases in atmospheric volatile organic compounds (VOC), especially in relation to biogenic VOC (BVOC), and haze days that affect the built-up areas are believed to be closely correlated. The present study aims to provide a spatially and temporally resolved BVOC inventory of a subtropical urban-rural complex, the Greater Hangzhou Area (GHA) in China. Urban green space was subdivided into block green space and linear green space; rural areas were classified into four primary forest types. A field survey was conducted to assess the vegetation composition (species, size) and foliar mass of each tree species. BVOC emission potentials were obtained from measurement and literature. Results showed (1) the emission intensity (annual BVOC emissions per land area) in the entire GHA is 3.37 x 10(6) g C km(-2) yr(-1), and rural forest (excluding bamboo forest) exhibits lower average emission intensity (2.74 x 10(6) g C km(-2) yr(-1)) than that of urban green space (3.13 x 10(6) g C km(-2) yr(-1)); (2) Within the built-up area, the block green space has higher emission intensity (3.93 x 10(6) g C km(-2) yr(-1)) than the linear green space (2.63 x 10(6) g C km(-2) yr(-1)); (3) in Hangzhou city, BVOC emissions of native and exotic trees exhibited no differences; and (4) in rural areas, bamboo forests and coniferous forests were the major contributors of BVOC emissions, whereas the original vegetation type of this region, evergreen broad-leaved forest, possessed lower BVOC emissions. The results suggest that total BVOC emission can be controlled to low levels by planting low-emitting species in built-up areas while restoring original broad-leaved forest vegetation in rural areas. The Estimation of Volatile Organic Compounds Emission from Landscape Plants in Beijing

Abstract:Based on the general survey results of urban garden of Beijing City in 2000, the VOC emission condition of urban garden greenland plants in Beijing City was studied, the natural emission inventory of VOCs in the garden greenland in Beijing City was established. The 2000 annual total emission amount was about 3.85×104 C, in which isoprene was 3.09×104 C, monoterpenes was 0.59×104 C and other VOCs(OVOC) was 0.16×104 C. The emissions possessed distinct seasonal dependence in which the emission amount in summer was the largest, being 2.49 104 C, occupying 64.7% of annual emission; in winter was the lowest, being 0.0086×104 C, occupying 0.2% of annual emission. The total emission amount in urban areas were higher than that in sub-urban areas, the highest was in Chaoyang district, being 1.37×104 C, occupying 36.0% of the entire city, followed by the emissions in Haidian, Fengtai and Shijingshan districts, occupying 16.2%, 13.8%, 4.7% respectively.

Abstract:One comprehensive emission inventory of CO, HC, NOX, PM10, PM2.5, BC, CH4, CO2 and N2O with high spatial reso-lution (0.01 degrees x 0.01 degrees) for 58 cities in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and its surrounding areas (BTHSA) during 2000-2020 are developed by using COPERT model and ArcGIS methodology. The results show that vehicular emissions of CO, HC, NOX, PM10, PM2.5, BC and CH4 have begun to decrease or slow their growth rates in recent years due to the imple-mentation of measures to control vehicular emissions. However, vehicular emissions of CO2 increase rapidly due to lit-tle fuel economy improvement. Besides, the usage of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems by heavy duty truck (HDT) is the main factor impacting the growth trend of vehicular N2O emissions since 2017. By 2020, vehicular emis-sions of CO, HC, NOX, PM10, PM2.5, BC, CO2, CH4 and N2O are estimated at about 1.65 Mt, 0.35 Mt, 1.39 Mt, 87.44 kt, 55.06 kt, 15.57 kt, 527.71 Mt, 36.20 kt and 8.56 kt, respectively. Therein, China III, IV, IV and IV passenger cars (PCs) are the predominated models for vehicular emissions of CO, HC, CH4 and CO2, accounting for 19.59-28.26 % of the total vehicular emission of corresponding pollutant. Nevertheless, the major contributors of vehicular emissions of NOX, PM10, PM2.5, BC and N2O are China III (29.64 %), III (18.03 %), III (22.81 %), III (42.16 %) and V (22.28 %) HDTs, respectively. The gridded vehicular emissions vary significantly, with emissions of CO, HC, CH4 and CO2 being mainly concentrated in central urban areas of cities (e.g., Beijing, Tangshan, Zhengzhou, Tianjin, Qingdao, Jinan). Nevertheless, the grids with high vehicular emissions of NOX, PM10, PM2.5, BC and N2O are mainly distributed along the expressway and the suburban roads of cities (e.g., Linyi, Tangshan, Jining, Weifang, Shijiazhuang, Tianjin, Baoding). Finally, multi-year uncertainties of vehicular emission inventory are discussed.
A Temporally and Spatially Resolved Validation of Emission Inventories by Measurements of Ambient Volatile Organic Compounds in Beijing, China

Abstract:Understanding the sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is essential for ground-level ozone and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) abatement measures. We made VOC measurements at 27 sites and online observations at an urban site in Beijing from July 2009 to January 2012. Based on these measurement data, we determined the spatial and temporal distribution of VOCs, estimated their annual emission strengths based on their emission ratios relative to carbon monoxide (CO), and quantified the relative contributions of various sources using the chemical mass balance (CMB) model. These results from ambient measurements were compared with existing emission inventories to evaluate the spatial distribution, species-specific emissions, and source structure of VOCs in Beijing. The measured VOC distributions revealed a hotspot in the southern suburban area of Beijing, whereas current emission inventories suggested that VOC emissions were concentrated in downtown areas. Compared with results derived from ambient measurements, the annual inventoried emissions of oxygenated VOC (OVOC) species and C2–C4 alkanes may be underestimated, while the emissions of styrene and 1,3-butadiene may be overestimated by current inventories. Source apportionment using the CMB model identified vehicular exhaust as the most important VOC source, with the relative contribution of 49%, in good agreement with the 40–51% estimated by emission inventories. The relative contribution of paint and solvent utilization obtained from the CMB model was 14%, significantly lower than the value of 32% reported by one existing inventory. Meanwhile, the relative contribution of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) usage calculated using the CMB model was 6%, whereas LPG usage contribution was not reported by current emission inventories. These results suggested that VOC emission strengths in southern suburban area of Beijing, annual emissions of C2–C4 alkanes, OVOCs and some alkenes, and the contributions of solvent and paint utilization and LPG usage in current inventories all require significant revisions.

Abstract:Background and AimAn accurate estimation of biogenic emissions of VOC (volatile organic compounds) is necessary for better understanding a series of current environmental problems such as summertime smog and global climate change. However, very limited studies have been reported on such emissions in China. The aim of this paper is to present an estimate of biogenic VOC emissions during summertime in China, and discuss its uncertainties and potential areas for further investigations.Materials and MethodsThis study was mainly based on field data and related research available so far in China and abroad, including distributions of land use and vegetations, biomass densities and emission potentials. VOC were grouped into isoprene, monoterpenes and other VOC (OVOC). Emission potentials of forests were determined for 22 genera or species, and then assigned to 33 forest ecosystems. The NCEP/NCAR reanalysis database was used as standard environmental conditions. A typical summertime of July 1999 was chosen for detailed calculations.Results and DiscussionThe biogenic VOC emissions in China in July were estimated to be 2.3×1012gC, with 42% as isoprene, 19% as monoterpenes and 39% as OVOC. About 77.3% of the emissions are generated from forests and woodlands. The averaged emission intensity was 4.11 mgC m-2 hr-1 for forests and 1.12 mgC m-2 hr-1 for all types of vegetations in China during the summertime. The uncertainty in the results arose from both the data and the assumptions used in the extrapolations. Generally, uncertainty in the field measurements is relatively small. A large part of the uncertainty mainly comes from the taxonomic method to assign emission potentials to unmeasured species, while the ARGR method serves to estimate leaf biomass and the emission algorithms to describe light and temperature dependence. ConclusionsThis study describes a picture of the biogenic VOC emissions during summertime in China. Due to the uneven spatial and temporal distributions, biogenic VOC emissions may play an important role in the tropospheric chemistry during summertime.Recommendations and PerspectiveFurther investigations are needed to reduce uncertainties involved in the related factors such as emission potentials, leaf biomass, species distribution as well as the mechanisms of the emission activities. Besides ground measurements, attention should also be placed on other techniques such as remote-sensing and dynamic modeling. These new approaches, combined with ground measurements as basic database for calibration and evaluation, can hopefully provide more comprehensive information in the research of this field.

Abstract:O3 and PM2.5 pollution are prominent in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are important precursors of both. However, few studies has been conducted to establish a high-precision BVOC emission inventory by vegetation types and species for the BTH region yet, and to further analyze the contribution of BVOC emissions to O3 and PM2.5 on this basis. This study established an emission inventory of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) in the BTH region using two methods: (a) the coupled method of stock volume conversion and plant function types (PFTs) and (b) MEGAN method. The contributions from different vegetation types to O3 and PM2.5 in the BTH region in July 2018 were simulated with WRF-CMAQ and verified using the O3 and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation potential method. Relatively consistent results were obtained using the different inventory establishment and air quality impact analysis methods. Fruiters, crops, shrubs & grasslands, evergreen forests, and deciduous forests emitted 6.25%, 31.18%, 18.27%, 11.42%, and 32.88% of total BVOCs, respectively. The simulation results showed that BVOCs contributed 23.73% to O3 and 37.99% to SOA in the BTH region. Deciduous trees, such as poplar and Quercus, were the main contributors to O3, while Pinus tabulaefoimis and Quercus were the main contributors to SOA.

Estimation of Biogenic VOCs Emissions in Eastern China Based on Remote Sensing Data

Abstract:In order to study emission features of biogenic VOCs（BVOCs） in Eastern China,the widely-used model of emissions of gases and aerosols from nature（MEGAN） was adopted.Recent information on leaf area index（LAI） and leaf biomass density of vegetations were based on the remote sensing data.Up-to-date observations on emission factors were investigated from literature.Based on average conditions of vegetation and meteorology between the year 2008 and 2010,hourly biogenic emissions of BVOCs in eastern China were calculated,with spatial grid resolution of 10 km.The results showed that the total amount BVOCs emissions was 11.3×106 t（C）,with isoprene（ISOP）,monoterpene（MON） and other VOC（OVOC） accounting for 44.9%、31.5%,and 23.6%,respectively.Seasonal variations were significant,and contributions of spring,summer,autumn and winter to the yearly total were 11.2%,71.8%,14.1% and 3.0%,respectively.High emission intensities were usually found in Xing＇an Mountain,Changbai Mountain,Qinling-Daba Mountain and southern hilly areas,generally between 1500 and 6500 kg · km-2 · a-1.Both total amount and intensities of emissions from provinces of Fujian,Guangdong,Jiangxi,Zhejiang,Hunan and Hubei are relatively high.Attentions should be paid on the interactions between BVOCs and anthropogenic pollutants（e.g.,nitrogen oxides） in these areas.The inventory of BVOCs emissions achieved in this study is an important groundwork for environmental and climate modeling.

Abstract:Biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emissions from urban greenspace have recently become a global concern. To identify key factors affecting the dynamics of urban BVOC emissions, we built an estimation model and utilized the city of Hangzhou in southeastern China as an example. A series of single-factor scenarios were first developed, and then nine multifactor scenarios using a combination of different single-factor scenarios were built to quantify the effects of environmental changes and urban management strategies on urban BVOC emissions. Results of our model simulations showed that (1) annual total BVOC emissions from the metropolitan area of Hangzhou were 4.7 x 10(8) g of C in 2010 and were predicted to be 1.2-3.2 Gg of C (1 Gg = 10(9) g) in our various scenarios in 2050, (2) urban management played a more important role in determining future urban BVOC emissions than environmental changes, and (3) a high ecosystem service value (e.g., lowest BVOC/leaf mass ratio) could be achieved through positive coping in confronting environmental changes and adopting proactive urban management strategies on a local scale, that is, to moderately increase tree density while restricting excessive greenspace expansion and optimizing the species composition of existing and newly planted trees.

Abstract:With above 20% growth of vehicle population in Chinese large cities, motor vehicle emissions are becoming important issues concerning public health. However, the emissions contribution of motor vehicles is not well established in China. In this paper, updated International Vehicle Emissions (IVE) model was used to study the hourly variety of emission factors of CO, HC and NOx. The geographic information system (GIS) was used to build a highly spatial and temporal vehicle emission inventories. The results show that hourly variaty of vehicle emission factors are obviouse during a day, with three relative peaks in 7:00, 14:00 and 17:00. The start emissions of CO and HC account for 25%-40% of total emissions, and NOx, only accounting for 5%, which is lower than the other two pollutants. The distribution map of GIS-based vehicle emission indicates that over 90% of CO and NOx cover 84% and 70% of Hangzhou urban area respectively.

Abstract:Aiming to reduce the large uncertainties of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) emissions estimation, the emission inventory of BVOCs in China at a high spatial and temporal resolution of 36 km × 36 km and 1 h was established using MEGANv2.1 with MM5 providing high-resolution meteorological data, based on the most detailed and latest vegetation investigations. BVOC emissions from 82 plant functional types in China were computed firstly. More local species-specific emission rates were developed combining statistical analysis and category classification, and the leaf biomass was estimated based on vegetation volume and production with biomass-apportion models. The total annual BVOC emissions in 2003 were 42.5 Tg, including isoprene 23.4 Tg, monoterpene 5.6 Tg, sesquiterpene 1.0 Tg, and other VOCs (OVOCs) 12.5 Tg. Subtropical and tropical evergreen and deciduous broadleaf shrubs, Quercus, and bamboo contributed more than 45% to the total BVOC emissions. The highest biogenic emissions were found over northeastern, southeastern, and southwestern China. Strong seasonal pattern was observed with the highest BVOC emissions in July and the lowest in January and December, with daily emission peaked at approximately 13:00 or 14:00 local time.

Abstract:Urban green spaces (UGSs) are often positively associated with the health of urban residents. However, UGSs may also have adverse health effects by releasing biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) and increasing the ambient concentrations of ozone (O-3) and secondary organic aerosols in urban areas. BVOC emissions from UGSs might be underestimated because of the lack of consideration of the UGS land-use type in urban areas. As such, in this study, we used a newly released satellite dataset, Sentinel-2, with a resolution of 10 m, to derive the classification distribution of UGSs and predict the UGS emissions of BVOCs in Beijing in 2019. The results showed that the annual emissions of BVOCs from UGSs were approximately 2.9 Gg C (95% confidence interval (CI): 2.4-3.3) in the six core districts, accounting for approximately 39% of the total UGS emissions in Beijing. Compared with the results based on Sentinel-2, the BVOC emissions might be underestimated by approximately 37% (95% CI: 11-63) using the commonly used satellite dataset. UGSs produced the highest BVOC emissions in summer (from June to August), accounting for 75.2% of the annual emissions. UGSs contributed the most to the O-3 formation potential in summer, accounting for 41.5% of the total. We could attribute a considerable amount of the O-3 concentration (27.0 mu g m(-3), 95% CI: 21.4-32.6) to the UGS BVOCs produced in the core districts of Beijing in July. The new BVOC emissions dataset based on Sentinel-2 vegetation information facilitates modeling studies on the formation of surface O-3 in urban areas and assessments of the impact of UGSs on public health.

Abstract:This research established GIS-based urban-scale emission inventories of SO2, NOX, and PM10 from both fossil energy consumption and industrial production process. Hangzhou, a typical Yangtse Delta city in south China, was selected to be the case study city. It is found that PM10 emission from industrial production process is the third highest, about 17.1% of total PM10 emission. The total emissions of SO2, NOX, and PM10 were 41385.9, 54780.4, and 24239.2ta−1 in 2004. AERMOD model was used to simulate pollutants concentration in the urban area of Hangzhou. The simulated concentrations were compared with the observed data collected at seven air quality-monitoring stations. The results show that simulated data of SO2 and NOX annual average concentrations agreed reasonably with observation data in five monitoring stations, but had obvious differences with observation data in the other two monitoring stations because of boundary and geographical data limitation in the simulation. The simulated data of PM10 annual average concentrations were much lower than observation data of all monitoring stations because secondary PM10 data were not included in the simulation.

Abstract:Background and Aim. An accurate estimation of biogenic emissions of VOC (volatile organic compounds) is necessary for better understanding a series of current environmental problems such as summertime smog and global climate change. However, very limited studies have been reported on such emissions in China. The aim of this paper is to present an estimate of biogenic VOC emissions during summertime in China, and discuss its uncertainties and potential areas for further investigations. Materials and Methods. This study was mainly based on field data and related research available so far in China and abroad, including distributions of land use and vegetations, biomass densities and emission potentials. VOC were grouped into isoprene, monoterpenes and other VOC (OVOC). Emission potentials of forests were determined for 22 genera or species, and then assigned to 33 forest ecosystems. The NCEP/NCAR reanalysis database was used as standard environmental conditions. A typical summertime of July 1999 was chosen for detailed calculations. Results and Discussion. The biogenic VOC emissions in China in July were estimated to be 2.3×1012gC, with 42% as isoprene, 19% as monoterpenes and 39% as OVOC. About 77.3% of the emissions are generated from forests and woodlands. The averaged emission intensity was 4.11 mgC m–2 hr–1 for forests and 1.12 mgC m–2 hr–1 for all types of vegetations in China during the summertime. The uncertainty in the results arose from both the data and the assumptions used in the extrapolations. Generally, uncertainty in the field measurements is relatively small. A large part of the uncertainty mainly comes from the taxonomic method to assign emission potentials to unmeasured species, while the ARGR method serves to estimate leaf biomass and the emission algorithms to describe light and temperature dependence. Conclusions. This study describes a picture of the biogenic VOC emissions during summertime in China. Due to the uneven spatial and temporal distributions, biogenic VOC emissions may play an important role in the tropospheric chemistry during summertime. Recommendations and Perspectives. Further investigations are needed to reduce uncertainties involved in the related factors such as emission potentials, leaf biomass, species distribution as well as the mechanisms of the emission activities. Besides ground measurements, attention should also be placed on other techniques such as remotesensing and dynamic modeling. These new approaches, combined with ground measurements as basic database for calibration and evaluation, can hopefully provide more comprehensive information in the research of this field.

Abstract:Under China’s rapid urbanization, the transformation of urban-rural human settlements contributes to the dramatic increase of greenhouse gas emissions in cities. Yet conventional methods of city-level greenhouse gas emission inventory have focused little on space and people, leading to blind-sided decisions for CO2 mitigation. This paper first establishes a "land use–CO2 " relationship framework based on the Chinese urban-rural land use category, the conventional inventory structure and the role of spatial planning in the reduction of CO2 emission, then combines the "top-down" and "bottom-up" inventory approaches, and further creates a "people/ land + emission intensity + secondary impact factors" index system. Finally, the application of this new approach in Beijing is illustrated.

Abstract:A new method was developed to estimate biogenic VOC emissions with high temporal and spatial resolution by use of Mesoscale Meteorology Modeling System Version5 (MM5). In this method, the isoprene and monoterpene standard emission factors for some types of tree in China were given and the standard VOC emission factors and seasonally average densities of leaf biomass for all types of vegetation were determined. A biogenic VOC emissions inventory in South China was established which could meet the requirement of regional air quality modeling. Total biogenic VOC emissions in a typical summer day were estimated to be 1.12 x 10(4) metric tons in an area of 729 km x 729 km of South China. The results showed the temporal and spatial distributions of biogenic VOC emission rates in this area. The results also showed that the geographical distribution of biogenic VOC emission rates depended on vegetation types and their distributions and the diurnal variation mainly depended on the solar radiation and temperature. The uncertainties of estimating biogenic VOC emissions were also discussed.

Abstract:Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) emissions lead to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ground-level ozone pollution, and are harmful to human health, especially in urban areas. However, most BVOCs estimations ignored the emissions from urban green spaces, causing inaccuracies in the understanding of regional BVOCs emissions and their environmental and health effects. In this study, we used the latest local vegetation datasets from our field survey and applied an estimation model to analyze the spatial-temporal patterns, air quality impacts, health damage and mitigating strategies of BVOCs emissions in the Greater Beijing Area. Results showed that: (1) the urban core was the hotspot of regional BVOCs emissions for the highest region-based emission intensity (3.0 g C m-2 yr-1) among the 11 sub-regions; (2) urban green spaces played much more important roles (account for 62% of total health damage) than rural forests in threating human health; (3) BVOCs emissions from green spaces will more than triple by 2050 due to urban area expansion, tree growth and environmental changes; and (4) adopting proactive management (e.g. adjusting tree species composition) can reduce 61% of the BVOCs emissions and 50% of the health damage related to BVOCs emissions by 2050.
