Abstract:The digital economy can enhance the energy efficiency and resource allocation of manufacturing enterprises, boost their R&D and innovation capabilities, and has increasingly become a key driver of the green-oriented transition in the sector. This paper explores the dynamic impact of the digital economy on the green-oriented transition of manufacturing and investigates whether the sector can meet the carbon emission reduction targets outlined in the "dual-carbon" policy within the context of the digital economy. We clarify the causal relationships between key variables and construct a system dynamics model to predict the future development of manufacturing’s green-oriented transition under different policy scenarios. The study yields the following conclusions:(1) Manufacturing enterprises are unlikely to meet the carbon reduction targets without any changes to the Current scenario. (2) The growth of the digital economy positively impacts both the economic efficiency and the green-oriented transition of manufacturing, with a cumulative effect that expands over time. (3) Key strategies for advancing the green transition include: increasing the electrification of manufacturing, reducing the carbon intensity of fossil fuels used in production, and decreasing investment in high-carbon industries. Meanwhile, continuing to increase R&D investment in manufacturing without prioritizing green and low-carbon technologies will significantly raise carbon intensity. (4) Comparing the carbon reduction outcomes of different scenarios reveals a divergence between short-term and long-term results. Achieving carbon emission reduction and sustainable development in manufacturing will require scaling up the digital economy, leveraging its carbon-reduction potential, balancing economic efficiency with green transition targets, and setting appropriate long-term and short-term targets.
