Abstract:The fine chemical industry manufactures products that are used by many major industrial sectors, including food and beverage, cosmetic, nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, electronic, paper, automotive, painting and water industries. The industry saw significant changes in the first quarter of the current century, including the uptake of new “greener” production technology, digitalization, and changes in structure and geographical distribution. Despite its relevance and significant annual growth rates lasting since decades, knowledge of this industry amid chemistry and chemical engineering scholars, including graduate and undergraduate students, is often limited. Providing an updated critical insight on the industry and the main changes occurred in the last 25 years, this study identifies the technology and policy drivers of change. The conclusions of the study may inform further practice-oriented education on the industrial aspects of the chemical enterprise.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve are the major changes experienced by the fine chemical industry in the first 25 years of the 21st century and their impacts on education and practice. Specifically, the paper aims to: 1. **Provide industry - updated insights**: The paper offers the latest insights into the fine chemical industry, especially the significant changes that have occurred since 2000, including technological progress, policy - driving factors, and changes in geographical distribution. 2. **Identify technology and policy - driving factors**: The paper analyzes in detail the technology and policy factors that drive industry transformation, such as biocatalysis, advanced chemical catalysis, continuous manufacturing (Continuous Manufacturing, CM), digital process design and control technologies, etc. 3. **Promote practice - oriented education**: Through the above - mentioned analysis, the paper aims to provide practice - oriented education suggestions on the industrial aspects of the fine chemical industry for scholars, postgraduates and undergraduates in the fields of chemistry and chemical engineering. 4. **Address supply chain disruptions**: The paper also explores the impacts of supply chain disruptions caused by the COVID - 19 crisis in 2020 on the industry, as well as the incentive measures taken by the governments in Europe, North America and Japan to revive the production of key drugs. Through these analyses, the paper hopes to raise the awareness of the importance of the fine chemical industry in academia and industry, and provide guidance for future education and research directions.
