Abstract:The valve side dry bushing of the converter station is a crucial component of the high voltage direct current transmission system. The dry bushing carries AC and DC voltages with multi order harmonics under operating conditions and is vulnerable to insulation defects at the edge of the pole plate, leading to partial discharges and resulting in insulation failure. Mastering the characteristics of epoxy resin insulation under composite voltage is becoming a crucial aspect in determining its safe and stable operation. To further investigate the insulation characteristics of epoxy resin under thermoelectric coupling, epoxy resin samples were prepared using a special formulation for valve side dry bushing and a pin plate model was used to simulate the internal defects of the bushing. An experimental observation platform for electrical tree degradation and a partial discharge measurement platform were constructed. Experimental samples were heated in an oil bath using a thermostatic heating table. The insulation degradation test of epoxy resin electrical tree growth using valve side dry bushing actual operating voltage waveform superimposed on positive and negative DC bias voltages within temperature range from 80°C to 120°C. The growth images of electrical trees were taken and partial discharge signals during the growth process were measured. The experimental results show that as the degradation temperature increases, the initiation voltage and breakdown time of the electrical tree decrease significantly, and the intensity of partial discharge is enhanced. The electrical tree transforms from a state of “conductive tree initiation, non conductive tree growth” to a state of “clumped conductive tree growth”. The degradation area of epoxy material is further deepened by composite voltage under negative polarity DC bias. The phase resolved partial discharge(PRPD) shows “multi peak” characteristics with the peak value of the composite voltage, and exhibits saturation in the same cycle. The superposition of high temperatures and harmonics further contribute to the deterioration of epoxy resin insulation. The impact of harmonics on the performance of insulation materials in valve side dry bushing insulation research should be further evaluated.
