Abstract:Two three-dimensional supramolecular organic frameworks, [(H(2)bpdc)(0.5)(bipy)(0.5)] (1) and [(H(3)dpob)(bipy)center dot 3H(2)O] (2), have been successfully constructed and structurally characterized (H(2)bpdc = 2,2'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid; H(3)dpob = 3-(2',3'-dicarboxylphenoxy)benzonic acid; bipy = 4,4'-bipydine). 1 is driven by C-H center dot center dot center dot pi hydrogen-bonded packing to three dimension. 2 origins form parallel-packed wavy chains and show pi-pi stacking-directed structure. After the SOFs are formed via weak noncovalent interaction, 1 and 2 show an enhancement in thermostability. The different conformations of bipy induced by weak noncovalent interactions are responsible for the huge dissimilarity of structural and luminescence behavior between them. Under the excitation of 365 nm ultraviolet light, 1 and 2 show stronger blue-white and green-white luminescent emissions in the solid state, respectively. In comparison with 2, supramolecular organic framework 1 shows superior performance in aggregation-induced emission (AIE) activity, which is explained and elaborated via the simple model from the viewpoint of planarity (Psi(r)) and rotatability (theta(r)). Moreover, stimuli-responses behaviors to mechanical force were evaluated to explore stability of AIE materials, luminescent shift (Delta lambda(em) approximate to 36 nm) was observed in 2, whereas almost no change of 1 was found. Subsequently, 1 doped poly(methyl methacrylate) film demonstrates the comparable intensity with the solid state at concentrations of 2.0%, accompanied by the improvement of thermal stability.

Abstract:Fluorescence detecting both organic and inorganic analytes has aroused tremendous scientific interests, because fluorescence techniques have high sensitivity and are easy to operate. A new three-dimensional (3D) MOF {[(CH 3 ) 2 NH 2 ][Zn 3 (bbip)(BTDI) 1.5 (OH)]•DMF•MeOH•3H 2 O} n ( JXUST-13 , bbip = 2,6-bis(benzimidazol-1-yl)pyridine and H 4 BTDI = 5,5'-(benzo[ c ][1,2,5]thiadiazole-4,7-diyl)diisophthalic acid) with new 4,4,8-connceted topology has been successfully synthesized and structurally characterized. Importantly, JXUST-13 could recognize H 2 PO 4 − and acetylacetone (Acac) by obvious fluorescence blue shift and slight enhancement with the detection limits of 2.70 μmol/L and 0.21 mmol/L, respectively. In addition, JXUST-13 exhibits relatively good thermal stability, chemical stabilities as well as reusability, and the analytes could be distinguished by naked eye and fluorescence test paper. Remarkably, JXUST-13 is the first dual-responsive MOF sensor based on fluorescence blue shift for the detection of H 2 PO 4 − and Acac with good selectivity in a handy, economic, and environmentally friendly manner.

Tetra-Nuclear Cluster-Based Lanthanide Metal-Organic Frameworks as White Phosphor, Information Encryption, Self-Calibrating Thermometers, and Fe2+ Sensors

Abstract:The application of one kind of metal-organic framework (MOF) material used in multiple fields is one of the most interesting research topics. In this work, four new tetra-nuclear cluster-based lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (LnMOFs) [Ln2(BTDB)3(DMA)(phen)]n (Ln = Tb TbMOF, Eu EuMOF, Gd GdMOF, Tb1.830Eu0.170 Tb,EuMOF, 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)-4',4″-dicarboxytriphenylamine = H2BTDB, 1,10-phenanthroline = phen) are obtained based on the ligand of H2BTDB that is synthesized in our laboratory, and the precise single-crystal structure of H2BTDB is obtained for the first time. The white phosphor was obtained by facilely hybridizing two components of the orange-yellow emission phosphor of Tb,EuMOF and the blue luminescence material of triphenylamine according to the trichromatic theory. At the same time, TbMOF, EuMOF, Tb,EuMOF, and the white phosphor can be used for information encryption, demonstrating their potential application in the field of anti-counterfeiting. Tb,EuMOF is also a multi-mode and self-calibrating thermometer within a broad temperature range of 110-300 K. Further studies show that EuMOF is a rapid response sensor for Fe2+, with a very low limit of detection of 2.0 nM, which is much lower than the national standards for Fe2+ (GB 5749-2005, 5.357 μM). It can achieve strong anti-interference detection of Fe2+ in actual samples of tap water and lake water. In addition, EuMOF can also be made into an easy-to-use sensing device of test paper for real-time and visual sensing of Fe2+.
Fluorescent Sensors Based on Lanthanide-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks via Devices and pH Response

Abstract:In light of the escalating industrial and environmental pollution, there is a pressing need for the development of novel materials capable of swiftly detecting pollutants. Here, we report the synthesis of five lanthanide metal-organic frameworks sharing a common structure, prepared via a hydrothermal method and denoted as [Ln2(H2DHBDC)2(phen)(H2O)6]n (where CUST-888 corresponds to Tb, CUST-889 corresponds to Eu, CUST-890 corresponds to Gd, CUST-891 corresponds to Dy, and CUST-892 corresponds to Nd). Notably, CUST-888 and CUST-889 exhibit discernible visual alterations in response to acidic and alkaline conditions. To assess their practical utility, luminescent test strips and light-emitting diode lights based on CUST-888 and CUST-889 were devised, enabling the visual detection of luminescence color changes induced by Hg2+, Cr2O72-, tetracycline, and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol. Furthermore, highlighters derived from CUST-888 and CUST-889 were designed, showcasing robust stability, adjustable color, and substantial potential for application in the realm of anticounterfeiting.

Abstract:A new luminescent lanthanide metal-organic framework was synthesized under hydrothermal conditions by introducing the tetracarboxylic acid ligand (H(4)bptc) as a chromophore to sensitize the luminescence of the Tb3+ ion. Interestingly, despite the achiral nature of H(4)bptc, the resulting framework exhibited rare chiral helical channels. The luminescence studies revealed that this material showed a highly selective fluorescence quenching response to Fe3+ ions in liquid suspension, which can be conveniently observed by the naked eye under UV light. Thus, this material can be potentially used as a chemosensor for sensing Fe3+ ions and its selective luminescence quenching response can be explained in terms of the competitive absorption mechanism.

Abstract:A luminescent terbium metal-organic framework [Tb(HPIA-)(PIA2-)(H2O)2] (Tb-MOF), synthesized by a lanthanide metal ion (Tb3+) and nitric heterocyclic carboxylic acid ligands H2PIA (H2PIA = 5-(1H-pyrazol-3-yl)isophthalic-acid), was structurally characterized as a three-dimensional skeleton structure in which layered coordination frameworks are connected by hydrogen bonds. Based on the antenna effect, Tb-MOF can emit bright green fluorescence under 254 nm excitation, and the fluorescence emission presents excellent durability in aqueous solutions among a wide pH range. Moreover, the structure of Tb-MOF also possesses outstanding thermal stabilities. In some ways, PO4 3- and its derivatives are thought to be a kind of pollutant ion causing series environmental and health problems. The as-synthesized Tb-MOF exhibits prominent selectivity and remarkable sensitivity for detecting PO4 3- as an easy-to-use fluorescent probe with low detection limit, fast response, and wide detection range. Therefore, Tb-MOF has significant applications in the fields of human health and environmental monitoring.
Stable Terbium Metal-organic Framework with Turn-on and Blue-shift Fluorescence Sensing for Acidic Amino Acids (L-aspartate, L-glutamine) and Cations (Al3+, Ga3+)

Abstract:A terbium-based metal-organic framework, namely {[Tb2(ADIP)(H2ADIP)(HCOOH)(H2O)2]∙2DMF∙2H2O}n (Tb-MOF, H4ADIP = 5,5'-(anthracene-9,10-diyl) diisophthalic acid ), was synthesized and characterized. The single-crystal structure analysis shows that the Tb-MOF crystallizes in the C2/C space group in the monoclinic system, and its asymmetric unit contains two TbIII ions, one ADIP4-, one H2ADIP2-, one coordinating formic acid and two coordination water molecules. Tb-MOF has a three-dimensional porous structure with a porosity of 41.5%. Tb-MOF is a highly selective and sensitive fluorescent turn-on and blue-shift sensor for L-aspartate (Asp), L-glutamine (Glu), Al3+ and Ga3+with detection limits of 0.25, 0.23 μM, 0.069 and 0.079 μM, respectively. Experimental studies and theoretical calculations show that the sensing process is mainly attributed to the energy transfer and the absorbance caused enhancement (ACE) mechanism. Therefore, Tb-MOF is a good multi-response fluorescence sensor for acidic amino acids and Al3+, Ga3+cations.

Abstract:A reaction between a Zr-IV salt and a porphyrinic tetracarboxylic acid leads to a metal-organic framework (MOF) with two types of open channels, representing a MOF featuring a (4,8)-connected sqc net. The MOF remains intact in both boiling water and aqueous solutions with pH ranging from 1 to 11, a remarkably extensive pH range that a MOF can sustain. Given its exceptional stability and pH-dependent fluorescent intensity, the MOF can potentially be applied in fluorescent sensing.

Abstract:A new tripodal carboxylic ligand, 2-(4-carboxylphenoxy) terephthalic acid (H3L2), readily reacts with Zn(II) salt in the presence of 4,4′-bipyridine (4,4′-bipy) to afford a new metal-organic framework of {Zn3(L2)2(μ2-H2O)(4,4′-bipy)}n (1). 1 shows 3D two-fold interpenetrating network with (3,8)-connected tfz-d topology. 1 exhibits impressive pH stability and strong luminescence, making it an excellent candidate as a fluorescent chemical sensor. It is extremely responsive to toxic heavy metal ion (Hg2+) and TNT explosive. Importantly, 1 as the luminescent probe of Hg2+ can be simply and quickly regenerated, which represents a rare example in reported luminescent sensors of Hg2+. Furthermore, the photocatalytic property of 1 for degradation of the Rhodamine B (RhB) has been examined.

Abstract:Lanthanide metal–organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) have attracted extensive attention because of their structural adjustability and wide optical function applications. However, MOFs with a wide linear pH response and stable framework structures in acidic or alkaline solutions are rare to date. Here, we used 4,4′,4″-s-triazine-2,4,6-triyltribenzoate (H3TATB) as an organic ligand, coordinated with lanthanide ions (Eu3+/Tb3+), and synthesized a new metal–organic framework material. The material has a porous three-dimensional square framework structure and emits bright red or green fluorescence under 365 nm UV light. The carboxyl group of the ligand is prone to protonation in an acidic environment, and negatively charged OH− and ligand (TATB3−) have a competitive effect in an alkaline environment, which could affect the coordination ability of ligand. The luminescence degree of the framework decreases with the increase in the degree of acid and base. In particular, such fluorescence changes have a wide linear response (pH = 0–14), which can be used as a potential fluorescence sensing material for pH detection.

Abstract:A Tb-based metal–organic framework TbNTA H2O (TbNTA1, NTA=nitrilotriacetate) was synthesized and characterized. Photoluminescence (PL) properties of anion incorporated TbNTA1 were investigated with the addition of the aqueous solution of different anions such as F−, Cl−, NO2−, CO32−, SO42− and PO43−. The luminescence intensity of the anion-incorporated TbNTA1 showed a different degree of changes, particularly for the PO43− incorporated TbNTA1, which showed a significant quenching effect. The unique selective detection of PO43− ions in water indicates that TbNTA1 is promising to be employed as a novel luminescence probe for phosphate ions in biological system.

Abstract:Formic acid is a common chemical raw material, the effective detection of which is of importance to food safety and environmental quality. In this work, the lanthanide functionalized dual-emission metal-organic framework (TH25) was prepared as a ratiometric fluorescent sensor for formic acid. This ratiometric sensor has a good detection performance with high selectivity, sensitivity, and reproducibility. Together with a low limit of detection of 2.1 ppm, these characters promise the ability to sense at low levels as well as a practical detection ability. This work provides ideas for the design and synthesis of effective chemical sensors for organic acids.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks have attracted great attention due to their extensive applications in energy storage, gas separation, catalysis, and photoelectric devices over the past decades. However, the design and synthesis of COFs with fluorescent units have been considered as a big challenge. Herein, we report a porphyrin-based covalent organic framework (TPE-Por-4) by the condensation of the C4-symmetric and D2h-symmetric monomers. Through a series of characterizations, its structure was confirmed. It was found that TPE-Por-4 shows unique fluorescent properties originated from both of porphyrin and tetraphenylethylene building blocks, its suspensions emit strong fluorescence and display an apparent response to pH fluctuation ranging from 2 to 4, and thus, a promising method was provided for spectroscopic monitoring of medium pH value.

Abstract:A Tb-active metal-organic framework Tb(BTC)·(DMF)·(H2O) (1) was synthesized and characterized. Photoluminescence (PL) properties of Tb3+ ions in the partially desolvated compound Tb(BTC)·(DMF)0.8(H2O) (1a) were investigated as it was introduced into n-propanol mixed with other various solvents such as DMF, acetonitrile, tetrahydrofuran (THF) and acetone. The fluorescence intensity of compound 1a emulsions in n-propanol increased and decreased remarkably with the additions of DMF and acetone solvents, respectively, whereas the changes in the luminescence intensity of that in other cases were not obvious, which indicated the compound is promising to be employed as a novel luminescent probe for certain of small organic molecules.
Highly Stable Mixed-Lanthanide Metal-Organic Frameworks for Self-Referencing and Colorimetric Luminescent Ph Sensing

Abstract:A strategy utilizing mixed-lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for self-referencing and colorimetric luminescent pH sensing has been developed. The mixed-lanthanide MOFs Eu(x)Tb(1-x)Hdpda (x=0.097, 0.205, 0.303, H(4)dpda=4-(3,5-dicarboxyphenyl)pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid) exhibit excellent stability in phosphate buffer solution with pH values varying from 3.90 to 7.50. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the deprotonation of uncoordinated carboxyl groups in ligands results in the elevation of the triplet excited state (T-1) energy level of H(4)dpda, thus increasing the energy transfer probability from the T-1 to D-5(4) level of Tb3+. As a result, the emission intensity of Tb3+ in Eu(x)Tb(1-x)Hdpda increases gradually while that of Eu3+ is almost not changed with the pH varying from 3.90 to 7.50. The intensity ratios of Eu3+ to Tb3+ can be correlated to the pH value, suggesting they are promising self-referencing luminescent pH sensors. Furthermore, the significant pH-dependent emission color change enables them to act as a luminescent colorimetric pH sensor for in situ and real-time pH imaging. Because the energy transfer between the ligand and lanthanide ion can be easily tuned by selecting an appropriate ligand to further optimize the pH response range and sensitivity, such a strategy opens a new perspective for the development of self-referencing luminescent pH sensors.
Designing Functional Metal-Organic Frameworks from a New Tripodal Carboxylate Ligand: Fluorescence Sensing and Photocatalytic Properties

Abstract:A new tripodal carboxylic ligand, 2-(4-carboxylphenoxy) terephthalic acid, readily (H3L) reacts with Cd(II) salts in the presence of N-donor ligands to afford three different metal-organic frameworks of {Cd3(L)2(H2O)4·2CH3CN}n (1), {Cd3(L)2(2,2′-bipy)4·2H2O}n (2), and {Cd3(L)2(phen)2·2CH3CN}n (3). The structure of 1 consists of a 1D metal chain extending to three-dimensional network. The structures of 2 and 3 can be described as a repetition of a trinuclear core with subtle differences. 1–3 exhibit impressive chemical stability, pH stability and strong luminescence, making them excellent candidates as multifunctional fluorescent sensors for selective and sensitive detection of Hg2+, nitroaromatics as well as Cr2O72-. 1–3 are all extremely responsive to Hg2+ ion at a parts per million level, the limits of detection towards Hg2+ ion are 2.55 × 10−6M, 2.72 × 10−6M, and 9.79 × 10−7M for 1–3, respectively. The KSV value for 3 (5.155 × 104M−1) is the highest among most MOFs reported to date. 1–3 represent the first case on the recyclable luminescent probe for Hg2+ ion. Furthermore, the photocatalysis properties of 1–3 for degradation of the Rhodamine B (RhB) have also been examined.
A multi-responsive luminescent sensor based on a stable Eu( iii ) metal–organic framework for sensing Fe 3+ , MnO 4 − , and Cr 2 O 7 2− in aqueous solutions

Abstract:A stable benzothiadiazole-based Eu( iii ) metal–organic framework with cco topology has been successfully constructed, and represents the multifunctional fluorescence sensor toward Fe 3+ , MnO 4 − and Cr 2 O 7 2− in aqueous solutions.
