Abstract:Few-mode-fiber (FMF) based mode division multiplexing (MDM) is a promising technique to further increase the transmission capacity of single mode fibers. We propose and numerically investigate a fiber-optical mode converter (MC) using long period gratings (LPGs) fabricated on the FMF by point-by-point CO2 laser inscription technique. In order to precisely excite three modes (LP01, LP11, and LP02), both untilted LPG and tilted LPG are comprehensively optimized through the length, index modulation depth, and tilt angle of the LPG in order to achieve a mode contrast ratio (MCR) of more than 20dB with less wavelength dependence. It is found that the proposed MCs have obvious advantages of high MCR, low mode crosstalk, easy fabrication and maintenance, and compact size.
Dual Concentric-Ring-Core Fiber With Four Zero-Dispersion Wavelengths for Beyond Three-Octave OAM Supercontinuum Generation

Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams, featuring with unique spatial field distributions, have been extensively investigated and applied into a wide range of fields. In most applications, OAM beams covering a certain frequency band are usually required, and supercontinuum (SC) generation is a feasible method to provide broadband OAM source. As a short pulse is incident into a specially designed optical fiber with flat dispersion over broad bandwidth, a broadband SC could be generated along propagation due to the nonlinear spectral broadening. In this work, we propose a dual concentric-ring-core fiber design to achieve near-zero and flat dispersion profile over 3007-nm wavelength range with four zero-dispersion wavelengths for the OAM mode. The precise position of the zero-dispersion wavelengths can be tailored by varying the structural variables and the germanium-doped concentration of the silica-based fiber. The performance of the spectral broadening in terms of flatness and bandwidth is investigated under different input pulse and propagation conditions. Simulation results depict that the OAM3,1 mode supercontinuum spectrum can achieve beyond three-octave spanning from 445 to 3942 nm at 40 dB level by pumping a 50-fs 600-kW Gaussian pulse at the central wavelength of 1900 nm into a 2-mm designed fiber. By further optimizing the proposed fiber structure for the OAM1,1 mode with <60 ps(nmkm) dispersion variation over a 3210-nm bandwidth, the generated supercontinuum can cover nearly three octaves.

Abstract:Light-carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) has exhibited significant potential across a diverse array of fields. In several of these applications, broadband coherent OAM sources are essential for the functioning of optical systems. The emission of dispersive waves facilitates efficient energy transfer to distant spectral domains while preserving coherence between generated frequency components. In this work, we introduce a dual concentric-ring-core fiber design capable of generating two and four OAM dispersive waves (DWs) under conditions of anomalous dispersion and normal dispersion pumping, respectively. The physical phenomena underlying the spectral evolution are delved and each case is discussed separately. Our findings reveal that the locations and quantities of dispersive wave generation in both scenarios align with predictions derived from the corresponding phase matching conditions. This technique paves the way for the development of an efficient OAM supercontinuum source characterized by a high degree of coherence.

Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexing technology is expected as one of the prospective candidates for sustaining the further increment of data-transmission capacity in the optical communication systems. Advanced multiplexing technology of combining OAM-based mode division multiplexing (MDM) in the multicore fiber (MCF) with wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) can further improve the transmission rate and spectrum efficiency in the communication systems. In this paper, a multi-ring-air-core fiber (MRACF) supporting thousands of OAM modes is designed and analyzed. The tradeoffs between ring numberdensity and their corresponding system performance parameters in this fiber are systematically investigated. Based on the analytical results, MRACF with 37 rings can support a record high 4440 radially fundamental OAM modes at 1550 nm, featuring <53 dB inter-ring crosstalk and >5.67 104 intra-ring modal effective refractive index difference. Furthermore, a record-high 4144 radially fundamental OAM modes with <40 dB inter-ring crosstalk can be supported across C and L bands from 1530 nm to 1625 nm, which is one order of magnitude larger than the number of linearly polarized (LP) modes or supermodes ever reported within one single fiber.

Abstract:Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM), inherent to light beams characterized by helical phase fronts, represents an alternative spatial degree of freedom for photons. In recent years, OAM-based communication has gained significant attention as a potential solution to increase the capacity and spectral efficiency of optical fiber communication systems. In optical fibers, OAM modes can be generated and manipulated by utilizing specialized optical components and techniques. One approach involves using specially designed optical fibers, such as ring-core fibers, which have the capability to support multiple OAM modes. In the manufacturing process, the ring fiber is hardly made perfectly, especially the doped-cores. The introduced defect breaks the symmetry of the ring-core, which has a serious impact on OAM mode transmission. Using a material with a slightly higher refractive index than the cladding to wrap the ring-core is effective in reducing impairment of defects. After numerical simulation, the proposed method improves the walk-off length by a factor of 2-40.

Abstract:Beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) have exhibited significant potential across various fields, such as metrology, image coding, and optical communications. High-performance broadband coherent OAM sources are critical to the operation of optical systems. The emission of dispersive waves facilitates the efficient transfer of energy to distant spectral domains while preserving the coherence among the generated frequency components. Light sources that maintain consistency over a wide range can increase the efficiency of optical communication systems and improve the measurement accuracy in imaging and metrology. In this work, we propose a germanium-doped double ring-core fiber for five OAM dispersive waves (DWs) generation. The OAM 1,1 mode supported in the fiber exhibits three zero-dispersion wavelengths (ZDWs) located at 1275, 1720 and 2325 nm. When pumped under normal dispersion, the output spectrum undergoes broadening and exhibits five DWs, situated around 955, 1120, 1450, 2795 and 2965 nm, respectively. Concomitant with blue-shifted and red-shifted dispersive waves, the spectrum spans from 895 to 3050 nm with high coherence. The effect of the fiber and input pulse parameters on DWs generation, as well as the underlying dynamics of the dispersive wave generation process, are discussed. As expected, the number and location of DWs generated in the output spectrum have agreement with the prediction of the phase-matching condition. Overall, this multiple DWs generation method in the proposed fiber paves the way for developing efficient and coherent OAM light sources in fiber-based optical systems.

Abstract:A novel nested three-ring-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is designed and analyzed. OAM modes are transmitted independently in the three guided mode regions and the nested structure increases the number of OAM modes. In the wavelength range of 1.5–2.0 μm, the PCF shows stable transmission of 46 + 62 + 74 OAM modes. The mode purity of all the eigenmodes is greater than 91% and the isolation parameters remain above 55 dB. The larger effective mode field areas result in ultra-low nonlinear coefficients less than 1.04 m2W−1 and the confinement losses of the supported modes are less than 1.18 × 10−8 dB/m. In addition, the structure comprising circular air holes and silica enables easier manufacturing and the excellent performance also suggest large potential in large-capacity transmission systems.

Abstract:We propose and design a hollow As2S3 ring-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with 514 radially fundamental orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes over 360 nm communications bandwidth across all the O, E, S, C, and L bands. The designed PCF with 40 $mu text{m}$ -radius air core and 150 nm-width As2S3 ring can support eigenmodes up to HE130,1 and EH128,1. The numerical analysis shows that the designed ring PCF has large effective refractive index contrast, and can transmit up to 874 OAM modes near 1.55 $mu text{m}$ . Simulation results show that in the C and L bands, the PCF with a hollow-core radius of 40 $mu text{m}$ and a ring width of 0.15 $mu text{m}$ can retain an $2.5times 10 ^{-3}$ effective refractive index difference between the two highest order OAM modes, which achieves effective mode separation, thereby achieving stable OAM mode transmission. The $n_{eff}$ difference between the even and odd fiber eigenmodes and the intra-mode walk-off are also carefully studied under different bending radii. The results show that higher-order OAM modes has better tolerance to the fiber bending, compared with the lower-order modes. The fiber has the potential to support ultra-high capacity OAM mode division multiplexing in the optical fiber communication systems.

Abstract:Recently, orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexing has attracted much attention for providing an exponential growth in optical fiber capacity. As an irreplaceable component to promote long-haul OAM mode fiber transmission system, the on-line OAM mode-multiplexed fiber amplifier need to be developed. In this paper, we propose a Gaussian-like erbium doping distribution design method for ring-core erbium doped fiber (RC-EDF) to optimize the differential modal gain (DMG), which can reduce the fabrication complexity of the fiber preform. With a good match with original design, the fabricated RC-EDF was characterized by all the supporting four OAM modes ($vert l vert$ = 1, 2, 3, 4) multiplexed amplification, which achieves an ultra-low DMG less than 0.3 dB at 1550 nm. The gain is above 15 dB and DMG is less than 1.2 dB for four OAM modes across the C-band under a 500 mW pump power. As a proof for transmission, 32 channels (8 wavelengths 4 OAM modes) carrying 32-Gbaud quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) OAM modes multiplexed-WDM transmission over the OAM-EDFA is demonstrated. The proposed OAM-EDFA with the average OSNR penalties of 0.34 dB may promote the practical implementation for the long-haul OAM modes fiber transmission system.

Abstract:A terahertz hollow-core fiber having a double-layer ring core is presented and investigated to support OAM mode transmission. These two annular cores will work as two separate OAM transmission spaces that are not interfered with and can support more OAM mode transmissions. A numerical model has been developed to assess the transmission performances of EH and HE modes in the 0.3~0.4 THz frequency band. Using only a single material to design the suggested fiber, 22 (in) + 58 (out) OAM modes can be stably transmitted at 0.36 THz. Neighboring EH and HE modes in the identical OAM family can obtain effective refractive index differences of more than 10-4. Furthermore, the designed fiber demonstrates excellent transmission properties, with the highest mode purities in the inner and outer rings being 92.22% and 93.78%, respectively. In the inner ring the effective mode field area is between 5.37×106 and 1.79×107 μm2, while in the outer ring, it is between 8.95×106 and 1.58×107 μm2. The HE1,1 mode has the smallest change in dispersion, with values of 2.76 and 0.87 ps/THz/cm in two high refractive index transmission ring cores, respectively. Additionally, the isolation (ISO) parameter is also analyzed. These mode characteristics indicate that the fiber structure has significant potential for applications in high-capacity terahertz communication systems.

Abstract:This study introduces a distinctive entwined photonic crystal fiber (PCF) featuring two distinct and independent directed mode sections, collectively supporting a total of 112 orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes, comprising 76 + 36 modes. The confinement loss (CL) ranges approximately between and while highest attained OAM purity is and at mode, respectively, for both inner and outer rings. All the modes demonstrate ERIDs exceeding , and minimum dispersion variation observed is . Additionally, we achieved an outstanding isolation performance with the highest attained ISO reaching at mode and observed a substantial effective mode area of 9.15 μm 2 and 25.8μm 2 , respectively, for inner and outer rings. This research leverages COMSOL Multiphysics' finite element method (FEM) and perfectly matched layer (PML) capabilities alongside MATLAB processing to calculate all key properties of the proposed fiber. Therefore, the suggested PCF demonstrates promising prospects for extended-range, high-capacity data transmission within optical communications and applications related to OAM sensing.

Abstract:In this paper, we design a novel type of photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with a kind of typical micro-structure in its innermost cladding area, which can totally transmit 26 orbital angular momentum modes (OAMs). Over a bandwidth of 300 nm from 1.5 to 1.8 μm, this new type PCF shows a great improvement in dispersion property when it is compared with the total internal reflection PCF for reference. Moreover, other mode properties are also calculated and listed in curves, including effective indices, confinement loss and nonlinear coefficient. And basing on the test results, we further ameliorate the micro-structure and cladding of previous PCF structure and propose two effective ways to reduce the dispersion and confinement loss respectively. One is to insert typical type of micro-structure; the other is to change the arrangement and size of air holes in the cladding area. We finally propose an optimized structure which can support 30 OAM modes with the application of the two ways. Results show the optimized structure performs very well and achieves great progress in terms of dispersion and confinement loss.

Abstract:Twisted light carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) is a special kind of structured light that has a helical phase front, a phase singularity, and a doughnut intensity profile. Beyond widespread developments in manipulation, microscopy, metrology, astronomy, nonlinear and quantum optics, OAM-carrying twisted light has seen emerging application of optical communications in free space and specially designed fibers. Instead of specialty fibers, here we show the direct use of a conventional graded-index multi-mode fiber (MMF) for OAM communications. By exploiting fiber-compatible mode exciting and filtering elements, we excite the first four OAM mode groups in an MMF. We demonstrate 2.6-km MMF transmission using four data-carrying OAM mode groups (OAM0,1, OAM+1,1/OAM-1,1, OAM+2,1, OAM+3,1). Moreover, we demonstrate two data-carrying OAM mode groups multiplexing transmission over the 2.6-km MMF with low-level crosstalk free of multiple-input multiple-output digital signal processing (MIMO-DSP). The demonstrations may open up new perspectives to fiber-based OAM communication/non-communication applications using already existing conventional fibers.

Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM) has emerged as a revolutionary technology for communication networks due to its ability to significantly increase the channel capacity. However, traditional optical fibers present significant hurdles to harnessing OAM's full potential, including dispersion and limited bandwidth, which facilitates investigations on supercontinuum (SC) generation for OAM beams. In this paper, an air-core Ge-doped ring fiber is proposed and designed to support high-order OAM mode up to | l | = 24. To achieve this, the fiber has a high refractive index difference between the ring core and the cladding, enabling stable transmission of high-order OAM modes. A key feature of this design is the OAM 24 , 1 mode, which exhibits near-zero and flat dispersion. This characteristic translates into high coherence and a remarkably broad SC generation. The generated SC spans over two octaves (2336 nm) within the infrared wavelength range (764 nm to 3100 nm) at a power level of −40 dB. Furthermore, by optimizing the structural parameters, we ensure near-zero and flat dispersion characteristics for the other OAM modes (| l | < 24), along with broad SC generation exceeding two octaves. This fiber design holds significant promise for future advancements in OAM beam transmission within the infrared spectrum.

Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes, having unique properties of a helical phase structure and doughnut intensity profile, have been widely studied in fiber-optic communications, in terms of OAM modulation and OAM multiplexing. In general, different types of specialty fibers with a ring-shape structure are preferred for more stable OAM transmission, which, however, may face greater manufacturing challenge and larger fiber loss compared to standard multi-mode fibers (MMFs). Therefore, the widely deployed and commercially available standard MMFs that can support hundreds of OAM modes have recently attracted great attention. In this paper, we review recent research progress in OAM communications based on standard MMFs. First, the basic concept of OAM and different types of specially designed OAM fibers are briefly introduced. Then, the OAM mode properties in MMFs and recent works, including OAM mode modulation, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)-free OAM mode group multiplexing, small-scale partial MIMO assisted OAM mode multiplexing, and OAM-based heterogeneous fiber-optic networks, are presented. The OAM communications using other widely deployed standard single-mode fibers are also briefly introduced as supplementary. Finally, key challenges and perspectives of OAM communications based on standard MMF are discussed and summarized.

Abstract:Stochastic nonlinear impairment is the primary factor that limits the transmission performance of high-speed orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode-division multiplexing (MDM) optical fiber communication systems. This Letter presents a low-complexity adaptive-network-based fuzzy inference system (LANFIS) nonlinear equalizer for OAM-MDM intensity-modulation direct-detection (IM/DD) transmission with three OAM modes and 15 wavelength division multiplex (WDM) channels. The LANFIS equalizer could adjust the probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the distorted pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) symbols to fit the statistical characteristics of the WDM-OAM-MDM transmission channel. Therefore, although the transmission symbols in the WDM-OAM-MDM system are subjected to a stochastic nonlinear impairment, the proposed LANFIS equalizer can effectively compensate the distorted signals. The proposed equalizer outperforms the Volterra equalizer with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 2, 1.5, and 1.3 dB for three OAM modes at a wavelength of 1550.12 nm, respectively. It also outperforms a CNN equalizer, with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 1, 0.5, and 0.3 dB, respectively. Moreover, complexity reductions of 67%, 74%, and 99.9% are achieved for the LANFIS equalizer compared with the Volterra, CNN, and ANFIS equalizers, respectively. The proposed equalizer has high performance and low complexity, making it a promising candidate for a high-speed WDM-OAM-MDM system.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes (de)multiplexing and transmission in 2-km few-mode fiber with IO-Gbaud Nyquist 32-QAM coherent detection signals without using MIMO. Favorable BER performance is achieved with low mode crosstalk < -25dB.

Abstract:We propose and numerically demonstrate a conversion and multicasting scheme of orbital angular momentum (OAM) states by using N -core supermode fiber (NCSF), where the topological charges of converted OAM states mainly depend on the injected OAM state and the number of fiber cores. The conversion efficiency (CE) of the converted OAM states could be optimized by properly designing the fiber structure. Take N = 6 as an example, ~37% CE could be achieved at telecom bands. Moreover, even for a fabricated NCSF, the CE could be dynamically changed by stretching the fiber or by adjusting the refractive index of the fiber cores through external control of the environmental conditions. Meanwhile, OAM multicasting could also be realized in the designed NCSF. The crosstalk between the multicasted OAM channels and their neighboring ones are assessed to be less than −30 dB. The proposed fiber-based OAM conversion and multicasting system is compatible with the existing optical fiber communication systems, showing potential applications in the future.

Abstract:Aiming at solving the problems of coupling between modes in a core and mode coupling between cores in few-mode multi-core fiber, a fiber with seven cores each with step index is proposed, and each core can support five modes. Each core has a central low refractive index region and a high refractive index ring to ensure that there is a large refractive index difference between modes in the core, so as to reduce the problem of mode coupling. The bending loss of central core and outer core, the crosstalk characteristics between modes and the influence of core parameters on crosstalk performance are simulated and analyzed by the finite element method. The simulation results show that at a wavelength of 1.55 μm and a bending radius of 50 mm, the bending loss of the proposed multi-core fiber is much lower than its attenuation loss, and the crosstalk between the adjacent cores of the five core modes are less than –20 dB/100 km. Therefore, this multi-core fiber can realize independent transmission of the core modes with long-distance under small bending radius.
