Abstract:Employing simulation as a strategic approach to enhance the thermal performance of insulating oils presents a scientifically grounded and efficient methodology. The thermal stability of insulating oils plays a crucial role in ensuring the safe and reliable functioning of transformers. This research employs molecular dynamics theory to assess the variations and discrepancies in microscopic thermal parameters—such as density, free volume fraction, self-diffusion coefficient, and enthalpy of vaporization—across different temperatures for mineral oils, natural esters, and modified natural esters. It identifies the insulating oil molecules exhibiting superior thermal stability from among mineral and ester-based oils. Furthermore, the study develops an evaluation framework for the thermal stability of insulating oils, leveraging the distinct microscopic thermal attributes of these molecules. The applicability of this evaluation method is validated through flash point and thermogravimetric analyses on representative insulating oils. The findings of this research offer a practical and reliable means for forecasting the thermal stability of various insulating oils, applicable to mineral, ester-based, and mixed insulating oils. Additionally, this investigation furnishes theoretical insights for enhancing the thermal stability of insulating oils and serves as a reference for anticipating the performance of other liquids.
