Abstract:The advancement of supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs) has been primarily limited by the challenges associated with the precise preparation of nanosheet-based materials. This study introduces a novel approach for the efficient separation of CO2 and H2 using SILMs. Specifically, we developed a new type of membrane, IL@AEt-GO-M−w, by functionalizing graphene oxide (GO) with 1-aminoethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (AEtMImBF4). The resulting AEt-GO was used to construct the IL@AEt-GO-M membrane. The AEt-GO’s abundant nitrogen-containing functional groups interact well with CO2, leading to a significant enhancement in CO2 selectivity from 1.3 to 17.7. After washing the membrane with ethanol, the CO2 permeability of the resulting IL@AEt-GO-M−w membrane increased from 3.8 GPU to 12.2 GPU, with selectivity remaining stable at 19.2. Further washing achieved a CO2 permeability of 21.2 GPU while maintaining excellent selectivity. These findings highlight the potential of the IL@AEt-GO-M membrane for efficient CO2 and H2 separation. Additionally, the method of washing away residual IL from the substrate to enhance membrane permeability offers valuable insights for optimizing ionic liquid-loaded membranes.
