Abstract:We developed a facile approach to synthesize thin-film nano-templated composite (TFNt) nanofiltration membrane with high water permeability, high NaCl/MgSO4 selectivity and strong antimicrobial properties. A polydopamine (PDA) coating on a polysulfone support was used as a nano-template to generate silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in situ with high loading and high uniformity. A subsequent interfacial polymerization reaction of piperazine and trimesoyl chloride was performed on this nano-template substrate to form the TFNt membrane. The TFNt membrane had significantly increased both the water permeability and salt rejection compared to the control thin-film composite (TFC) membrane as well as a thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membrane prepared by the conventional way of loading AgNPs directly during the interfacial polymerization process. Furthermore, the TFNt membrane showed better antimicrobial properties than both the TFC and the conventional TFN membranes. The current work presents an exciting approach to fabricate novel nanofiltration membranes using nano-templates, which provides important insights for high performance NF membrane synthesis.
“Mix-Then-On-Demand-Complex”: In Situ Cascade Anionization and Complexation of Graphene Oxide for High-Performance Nanofiltration Membranes

Abstract:Assembling two-dimensional (2D) materials by polyelectrolyte often suffers from inhomogeneous microstructures due to the conventional mixing-and-simultaneous-complexation procedure ("mix-and-complex") in aqueous solution. Herein a "mix-then-on-demand-complex" concept via on-demand in situ cascade anionization and ionic complexation of 2D materials is raised that drastically improves structural order in 2D assemblies, as exemplified by classical graphene oxide (GO)-based ultrathin membranes. Specifically, in dimethyl sulfoxide, the carboxylic acid-functionalized GO sheets (COOH–GOs) were mixed evenly with a cationic poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) and upon filtration formed a well-ordered layered composite membrane with homogeneous distribution of PIL chains in it; next, whenever needed, it was alkali-treated to convert COOH–GO in situ into its anionized state COO––GO that immediately complexed ionically with the surrounding cationic PIL chains. This "mix-then-on-demand-complex" concept separates the ionic complexation of GO and polyelectrolytes from their mixing step. By synergistically combining the PIL-induced hydrophobic confinement effect and supramolecular interactions, the as-fabricated nanofiltration membranes carry interface transport nanochannels between GO and PIL, reaching a high water permeability of 96.38 L m–2 h–1 bar–1 at a maintained excellent dye rejection 99.79% for 150 h, exceeding the state-of-the-art GO-based hybrid membranes. The molecular dynamics simulations support the experimental data, confirming the interface spacing between GO and PIL as the water transport channels.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Pore Size Tailoring from Ultrafiltration to Nanofiltration with PVC-g-PDMA Via Rapid Immersion Thermal Annealing

Abstract:Different from the typical interfacial polymerization for nanofiltration membrane fabrication, we proposed a novel method to prepare charged nanofiltration membrane via rapid immersion thermal annealing process with the ultrafiltration membrane, which was prepared from the amphiphilic copolymer, poly(vinyl chloride)-g-poly (2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate) (PVC-g-PDMA) via non-solvent induced phase separation. The pore structures and chemical properties of the membranes, and annealing conditions including the media where the membrane was annealed, annealing temperature and time, were investigated in detail. It is found that the porous separation layer was collapsed to be a stable, defect-free, and smooth film as the dense separation layer of nanofiltration membrane when it was annealed in n-heptane above its glass transition temperature (Tg) for only 1 min while the pore size cutoff was tailored from 20 nm to 2 nm. Salt rejections were in the order of MgCl2> NaCl > MgSO4> Na2SO4 at neutral condition due to Donnan repulsion, indicating a typical positively charged nanofiltration membrane. Overall, this rapid immersion thermal annealing process provides a facile and effective strategy to tailor ultrafiltration membrane toward nanofiltration applications for amphiphilic copolymer based membranes.

Abstract:Microporous organic nanotubes (MONs) hold considerable promise for designing molecular-sieving membranes because of their high microporosity, customizable chemical functionalities, and favorable polymer affinity. Herein, we report the use of MONs derived from covalent organic frameworks to engineer 15-nm-thick microporous membranes via interfacial polymerization (IP). The incorporation of a highly porous and interpenetrated MON layer on the membrane before the IP reaction leads to the formation of polyamide membranes with Turing structure, enhanced microporosity, and reduced thickness. The MON-modified membranes achieve a remarkable water permeability of 41.7 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 and high retention of boron (78.0%) and phosphorus (96.8%) at alkaline conditions (pH 10), surpassing those of reported nanofiltration membranes. Molecular simulations reveal that introducing the MONs not only reduces the amine molecule diffusion toward the organic phase boundary but also increases membrane porosity and the density of water molecules around the membrane pores. This MON-regulated IP strategy provides guidelines for creating high-permeability membranes for precise nanofiltration.

High-performance Thin Film Nanocomposite Membranes Enabled by Nanomaterials with Different Dimensions for Nanofiltration

Abstract:The incorporation of nanomaterials into a polyamide (PA) matrix has been demonstrated to be effective in the design of advanced thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes. In this study, a novel TFN membrane was developed by simultaneous introduction of two nanofillers with different dimensions. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were co-deposited onto a substrate surface with piperazine (PIP) monomers via vacuum filtration, followed by interfacial polymerization (IP) with trimesoyl chloride (TMC). A series of characterizations showed that the pre-loaded g-C3N4 was present as nanoaggregates wrapped by the formed PA film, while one-dimensional HNTs inclined to be horizontally aligned as a hydrophilic interlayer. This unique architecture led to a crumpled membrane surface with convex and ridged structures, and provided additional water transport channels. The surface roughness and hydmphilicity of the TFN membranes were also enhanced with the addition of nanomaterials. Although g-C3N4 and HNTs were able to elevate the water permeance, a superior separation performance could only be achieved by simultaneously incorporating these two nanofillers. The best performing TFN membrane containing 16.4 mu g cm(-2) g-C3N4 and 19.7 mu g cm(-2) HNTs exhibited a water permeance of 20.5 L m(-2) h(-1) bar(-1), nearly twice as high as that of the thin film composite (TFC) membrane, while maintaining a comparably high Na(2)SO(4 )rejection of 94.5%. This demonstrated the effectiveness of g-C3N4 and HNTs in developing high-performance TFN membranes, which were ascribed to their respective advantages as well as the combined effect in the regulation of the PA layer microstructure.

Abstract:Nanofiltration has been attracting great attention in alleviating the global water crisis because of its high efficiency, mild operation, and strong adaptability. Over decades, it remains a challenge to break the upper limit of performance and establish the formation-structure-property relationship for nanofiltration membranes. This feature article summarizes our recent progress in the preparation of high-performance thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration membranes, focusing on the mussel-inspired deposition method and the optimized interfacial polymerization (IP). By accelerating the oxidation of polydopamine and equilibrating the rate of aggregation and deposition processes, the mussel-inspired deposition method realizes the rapid and uniform formation of selective coatings or nanofilms. Diverse deposition systems endow the selective layer with rich chemical structures and easy post-functionalization, highlighting its potential in water treatment. As for optimizing the conventional IP, the rapid polycondensation of amine and acid chloride groups is slowed down to enable the controllability of IP at the water-organic interface. The homogeneity and integrity of the TFC membranes are improved by constructing a uniform reaction platform and introducing a viscous medium to control the amine diffusion, which facilitates the water permeability and promotes the separation efficiency. We have proposed a series of practical strategies for improving TFC membranes and might provide more inspiration for other nanofiltration techniques.

Abstract:The interfacial properties within a composite structure of membranes play a vital role in the separation properties and application performances. Building an interlayer can facilitate the formation of a highly selective layer as well as improve the interfacial properties of the composite membrane. However, it is difficult for a nanomaterial-based interlayer to increase the flux and retention of nanofiltration membranes simultaneously. Here, we report a nanofiltration membrane with a hybrid dimensional titania interlayer that exhibits excellent separation performance. The interlayer, composed of Fe-doped titania nanosheets and titania nanoparticles, helps the formation of an ultrathin (∼30 nm thick) and defect-free polyamide selective layer with an ideal nanostructure. The hybrid dimensional interlayer endows the membrane with a superior permeability and alleviates flux decline. In addition, the rigid interlayer framework on a PVDF support drastically improves the pressure resistance of nanofiltration membranes and shows negligible flux loss up to 1.5 MPa of pressure.

Polyamide‐imide Nanofiltration Hollow Fiber Membranes with Elongation‐induced Nano‐pore Evolution

Abstract:The molecular design of nanoporous membranes with desired morphology and selectivity has attracted significant interest over the past few decades. A major problem in their applications is the trade-off between sieving property and permeability. Here, we report the discovery of elongation-induced nano-pore evolution during the external stretching of a novel polyamide-imide nanofiltration hollow fiber membrane in a dry-jet wet-spinning process that simultaneously leads to a decreased pore size hut increased pure water permeability. The molecular weight cutoff, pore size, and pore size distribution were finely tuned using this approach. AFM and polarized FTIR verified the nano-pore morphological evolution and an enhanced molecular orientation in the surface skin layer. The resultant nanofiltration membranes exhibit highly effective fractionation of the monovalent and divalent ions of NaCl/Na2SO4 binary salt solutions. More than 99.5% glutathione can be rejected by the nanofiltration membranes at neutral pH, offering the feasibility of recovering this tripeptide. Abstract:The boron nitride nanosheets/aramid nanofibers/covalent organic frameworks (BNNS/ANF/COF) membranes with abundant 1D and 2D nanofluid channels are obtained by a mixed‐dimensional assembly. Owing to the synergies of the size sieving and Donnan effect, the BNNS/ANF/COF membrane demonstrates high rejection (among 98%) for those dyes whose size exceeds 1.0 nm. Moreover, it also exhibits remarkable durability, superior mechanical stability, and excellent anti‐swelling properties. 2D lamellar nanofiltration membrane is considered to be a promising approach for desalinating seawater/brackish water and recycling sewage. However, its practical feasibility is severely constrained by the lack of durability and stability. Herein, a ternary nanofiltration membrane via a mixed‐dimensional assembly of 2D boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS) is fabricated, 1D aramid nanofibers (ANF), and 2D covalent organic frameworks (COF). The abundant 2D and 1D nanofluid channels endow the BNNS/ANF/COF membrane with a high flux of 194 L·m‒2·h‒1. By the synergies of the size sieving and Donnan effect, the BNNS/ANF/COF membrane demonstrates high rejection (among 98%) for those dyes whose size exceeds 1.0 nm. Moreover, the BNNS/ANF/COF membrane also exhibits remarkable durability and mechanical stability, which are attributed to the strong adhesion and interactions between BNNS, ANF, and COF, as well as the superior mechanical robustness of ANF. This work provides a novel strategy to develop robust and durable 2D lamellar nanofiltration membranes with high permeance and selectivity simultaneously.

Abstract:Thin film composite (TFC) membranes with ultrathin dense selective layer have emerged as a promising candidate for nanofiltration with excellent permeation and rejection performance. Herein, novel organic–inorganic TFC nanofiltration membranes (TFC NFMs) are fabricated via the mussel-inspired modification of ultrafiltration membrane followed by a mineralization process. Hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile (HPAN) ultrafiltration membrane is facilely co-deposited with polydopamine (PDA) and polyetheylenimine (PEI), and the PDA-PEI coating further induces the growth of zirconia (ZrO2) nanoparticles on the membrane surface. The formed zirconia selective layer is defect-free, uniform, and ultrathin (10–20nm). The organic–inorganic TFC NFMs show high retention (>90%) for bivalent cations with a salts rejection sequence of MgCl2>CaCl2>MgSO4>NaCl>Na2SO4 at pH 6.0 ascribed to the positively charged membrane surface. The water flux reaches as high as 60L/m2h under 0.6MPa due to the ultrathin and hydrophilic properties of the inorganic selective layer. Moreover, the organic–inorganic TFC NFMs show good structure stability for long-term nanofiltration operation.

Abstract:A novel approach to fabricating thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) nanofiltration membranes was reported in this study. It involved the preparation of a polysulfone support in situ embedded with zeolite nanoparticles followed by interfacial polymerization to form the polyamide layer. Compared with the TFN membranes prepared by the conventional method (TFN-C), the new TFN membrane (TFN-I) had higher loading and more uniform dispersion of nanoparticles in the polyamide layer. The nanoparticles incorporation resulted in an increase of surface roughness but no change of surface hydrophilicity. The TFN-I membrane doubled the water permeability compared with the control membrane (TFC). The TFN-I membrane had a similar rejection of MgSO4 (>93% at 150 psi) and negatively charged pharmaceuticals (PhACs) with TFC, but a reduced rejection of NaCl and a slightly lower rejection of neutral and positively charged PhACs of small molecular weights. The TFN-I membrane performed much better than the TFN-C membrane. The demonstrated performance of TFN-I could be due to the internal pores of zeolite nanoparticles, the increased membrane surface roughness and, though undesirable, the microporous defects between the nanoparticles and the polyamide matrix. The newly developed approach is highly promising for the fabrication of TFN nanofiltration and reverse osmosis membranes of improved performance by incorporating various nanoparticles. Abstract:Polymer membranes for water treatment are constrained by the permeability-separation trade-off. Herein, two-dimensional (2D) zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) made of benzimidazole interconnected with Zn ions are used to create 2D Zn2(Bim)4 molecular sieve nanosheets, which is explored as an asymmetric, thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration (NF) membrane for removing organic dyes and salts from water with a high water permeability under a low operating pressure (1 bar). The 2D Zn2(Bim)4 TFC NF membrane is synthesized via ionic bonds between polycations and the peripheral hydroxy groups of 2D Zn2(Bim)4 nanosheets, regulating the assembly of 2D Zn2(Bim)4 to create a novel crack-free functional layer on top of a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration membrane. FESEM and XPS confirmed the presence of a polycations-regulated ultrathin functional layer with a thickness of ∼37 nm on the PVDF support. Benefiting from its structural feature, our 2D Zn2(Bim)4 TFC NF membrane could achieve an ultra-high flux of ∼290 L/(m2·h·bar) (5-10-fold higher than that of graphene-based membranes), good anti-fouling properties and high rejection rates (above 98%) for organic dyes. Moreover, the desalinization rate is 50-75%. That is, our membrane is endowed with NF capability, and its intrinsic ultrafiltration features (high water permeance, ultrafast, and energy-saving) are also well maintained.

Abstract:Two-dimensional nanosheet membranes with responsive nanochannels are appealing for controlled mass transfer/separation, but limited by everchanging thicknesses arising from unstable interfaces. Herein, an interfacially stable, thermo-responsive nanosheet membrane is assembled from twin-chain stabilized metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets, which function via two cyclic amide-bearing polymers, thermo-responsive poly(N-vinyl caprolactam) (PVCL) for adjusting channel size, and non-responsive polyvinylpyrrolidone for supporting constant interlayer distance. Owing to the microporosity of MOF nanosheets and controllable interface wettability, the hybrid membrane demonstrates both superior separation performance and stable thermo-responsiveness. Scattering and correlation spectroscopic analyses further corroborate the respective roles of the two polymers and reveal the microenvironment changes of nanochannels are motivated by the dehydration of PVCL chains.

Abstract:Hydrophilic and porous nanofillers have shown great benefits in the attainment of high-performance nanofiltration (NF) membranes. In this work, a novel nanoporous covalent organic framework (NCOF) was facilely synthesized under mild conditions and deposited onto a polyethersulfone substrate to induce formations of crumpled polyamide layers via interfacial polymerization. With the incorporation of NCOFs, the surface of the COF-based thin-film nanocomposite (CTN) membranes gradually transformed from tent-like to mesh morphology, which significantly enhanced the water permeance owing to the increased effective membrane filtration area and additional water transport channels provided by NCOFs. Besides, the favorable compatibility between NCOFs and the polyamide layer endowed the CTN membranes with high rejection capacities to a variety of solutes. The optimal membrane with the NCOF deposition density of 19.27 μg cm−2, CTN9 membrane, showed nearly twice higher water permeance of 15.52 L m−2 h−1 bar−1 while maintaining high rejections of Na2SO4 and MgCl2 (98.91% and 94.20%, respectively). In addition, the CTN membranes exhibited a satisfying stability during the long-term filtration of saline solutions as well as an improved antifouling ability to the model foulants of bovine serum albumin. The superior NF performance rendered the NCOF functionalized membranes highly promising for water treatment.

Abstract:Highly Permeable Nanofiltration Membranes In article number 2300672, Keizo Nakagawa, Hideto Matsuyama, and co‐workers present a porphyrin‐based metal–organic framework (MOF) nanosheet membrane induced by graphene oxide interlayer space via in‐situ transformation from ZnO. Suitable deposition of a metal source of ZnO allows horizontal alignment of the MOF nanosheets, and the exposed in‐plane pores of the MOF nanosheets serve as nanochannels for rapid water transport and efficient separation.

Abstract:In this work, we report a novel thin film composite (TFC) nanofiltration membrane (NFM) by incorporating a thin hydrophilic multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) interlayer between the microfiltration membrane support and the dense skin layer from interfacial polymerization. The MWCNT interlayer can absorb and storage the aqueous amino solution to facilitate the following interfacial polymerization, as well as provide a robust mechanical support to enable the nanofiltration of thin skin layer on the microporous substrate. Compared to those TFC NFMs supported by the ultrafiltration membranes, our membranes exhibit increased water permeation flux as high as 105.4Lm−2h−1 at 0.6MPa (which doubles the flux of the conventional ones) with high rejection for Na2SO4 (~95%). Moreover, the TFC NFMs show good stability during a long-term nanofiltration operation. This research provides us a promising approach to fabricate the high-flux NFMs for low pressure operation.

Abstract:Presently, advanced Thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) nanofiltration membranes fabricated using microporous materials displayed distinctly enhanced separation performance. Herein, tetrakis(hydroxymethyl) phosphonium chloride (THPC)-modified COF nanosheets (termed as NSs) were designed as the intermediate layer to construct a high-hydrophilic membrane support, with the purpose of regulating interfacial polymerization (IP) to optimize the physicochemical characters of polyamide films. Due to the high hydrophilicity and favored dispersion of NSs in aqueous phase, the as-fabricated COF nanosheet interlayer not only promotes uniform distribution of amine monomers, but also slows down their diffusion toward the organic interface. Compared pristine thin-film composite (TFC) membranes, the IC-TFN membranes yield a nodular polyamide film with a higher surface roughness (from 14.5 to 54.5 nm) and a lower film thickness (from 95 to 30 nm). Introducing NSs additionally improves the pore size (from 0.31 to 0.47 nm) of the functionalized TFN membrane revealed by the MWCO measurement. Consequently, NSs-interlayer polyamide (IC-TFN) membrane manifests a high permeability of 36.5 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 and satisfactory Na 2 SO 4 rejection of 98.5 %. The usage of 2D hydrophilic COF nanosheet as an interlayer to optimize the polyamide membranes offers a guideline for the design of high-performance TFN membrane.

Abstract:Nanofiltration membranes (NFMs) are widely used in saline water desalination, wastewater treatment, and chemical product purification. However, conventional NFMs suffer from broad pore size distribution, which limits their applications for fine separation, especially in complete separation of molecules with slight differences in molecular size. Herein, defect-free composite NFMs with narrow pore size distribution are fabricated using a contra-diffusion method, with dopamine/polyethylenimine solution on the skin side and ammonium persulfate solution on the other side of the ultrafiltration substrate. Persulfate ions can diffuse through the ultrafiltration substrate into the other side and in situ trigger dopamine to form a codeposited coating with polyethylenimine. The codeposition is hindered on those sites completely covered by the polydopamine/polyethylenimine coating, although it is promoted at the defects or highly permeable regions because it is induced by the diffused persulfate ions. Such a “self-completion” process results in NFMs with highly uniform structures and narrow pore size distribution, as determined by their rejection of neutral solutes. These near electrically neutral NFMs show a high rejection of divalent ions with a low rejection of monovalent ions (MgCl2 rejection = 96%, NaCl rejection = 23%), majorly based on a steric hindrance effect. The as-prepared NFMs can be applied in molecular separation such as isolating cellulose hydrogenation products.
