Abstract:Lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) co-doped by mixed lanthanide ions is a preeminent candidate for ratiometric luminescence thermometers. In recent years, there are few studies on the synthesis of such MOFs by introducing Ln(3+) ions of no luminescent properties such as Y3+. Herein, a novel Y/Eu co-doped Ln-MOF (Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA, H(4)NDPA = 5,5 '-naphthalene-1,4-diyl-diisophthalic acid) was synthesized via solvothermal methods, which showed good phase purity and thermal stability. Compared with EuNDPA, the Y3+ ions in Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA dilute the molar concentration of Eu3+, causing the emerge of ligand emission band. The luminescence intensity ratio of organic ligands and Eu3+ owns a good exponential dependence on temperature variation. As investigated, Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA owns the merits including a wide temperature sensing range (303-423 K), high relative sensitivity (3.04 %K-1 at 423 K), good spectral repeatability (>92 %) and distinct emission color change from red to blue. This novel Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA ratiometric thermometer is expected to promote the application and development of dual-emission MOF materials in the field of microelectronic temperature measurement.

Abstract:Mixed-lanthanide (Ln) luminescent materials have important application values in ratiometric temperature sensing. Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) offer a self-supporting network to conveniently tune multiple Ln3+ ions, but challenges still exist in material design. In this work, we selected two simple organic molecules as hydrogen-bonded building blocks, which are melamine (MA) and 2,5-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (PDC) owning the suitable energy to sensitize Tb3+ and Eu3+ ions. MA assists PDC molecules to support the network in a new HOF (MA-PDC), where the abundant carboxylic groups enable Ln3+ ions to combine with the HOF. Based on the effective energy transfer process, the emission of Tb3+ and Eu3+ from TbxEu1–x@MA-PDC (x = 0.75, 0.85, 0.90) shows the obvious temperature dependence, which benefits ratiometric temperature detection. Taking Tb0.85Eu0.15@MA-PDC as an example, when temperature varies from 303 to 443 K, the intensity ratio exhibits distinct S-type response based on Mott-Seitz model. It also behaves good relative sensitivity (1.03%/K at 383 K), low temperature resolution (0.059 K) and large reproducibility (>96%). This work demonstrates that functionalization of a simple-component HOF with mixed Ln3+ ions is a fantastic strategy to develop novel ratiometric thermometers of both low cost and good performance.
Cryogenic Luminescent Tb/Eu-MOF Thermometer Based on a Fluorine-Modified Tetracarboxylate Ligand.

Abstract:A fluorine-modified tetracarboxylic acid ligand, namely, 2'-fluoro-[1,1':4',1''-terphenyl]-3,3'',5,5''-tetracarboxylic acid (H4FTPTC), with suitable triplet energy excited state, was designed and applied to construct the luminescent lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (LnMOFs) for cryogenic temperature sensing. With the lanthanides codoping strategy, we developed a new Tb3+/Eu3+ mixed LnMOF system Tb1- xEu xFTPTC ( x = 0.05, 0.1, 0.2), which feature excellent linear responses to temperature with high relative sensitivity in the cryogenic range of 25-125 K. It was found that the relative sensitivity of such mixed LnMOF could readily be tuned by adjusting the incorporation amount of Eu3+ ions in the host framework. In addition, the energy transfer efficiency between the Tb3+ and Eu3+ ions in the framework with different Tb3+/Eu3+ ratios are also investigated and discussed.

Abstract:Five novel three-dimensional lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) constructed by 4-(3',5'-dicarboxylphenoxy) phthalic acid (H(4)dcppa), namely, {[Eu(Hdcppa)(H2O)(2)]center dot H2O}n (Eu-1), [Eu-1.5(dcppa) (HCOO)(0.5)(H2O)(2)]. (Eu-2), {[Ln(2)K(2)(dcFPa)(2)(H2O)(6)].m}H2O}(n) (Ln = Eu-3, Tb-4, Gd-5, m = 5 for Eu-3 and Tb-4; m = 4 for Gd-5) (HCOOH = formic acid) have been prepared by hydro(solvo)thermal method and fully characterized. Structural analyses indicated that H(4)dcppa ligand took four different coordination fashions in 1-5 and, thus, resulted in diversity of the targeted Ln-MOFs: Eu-1 displays the rare 3D (5,5)-connected vbk net, containing one-dimensional left and right-handed helical chains; Eu-2 possesses a 3D (3,8) -connected tfz-d topology constructed by trinuclear paddlewheel [Eu-3(CO)(26)] SBUs; 3-5 are isostructural and show 3D (Ln-dcppa(4-)) + 2D (K-dcppa(4-)) -> 3D (LnK-dcppa(4-)) structure. Eu-3, with regular 1D channels and open Lewis basic oxygen atoms on the pore surface was utilized for specific sensing and binding of metal ions through Lewis base interactions, shows high selectivity, fast response time (8 min), and high sensitivity (K-sv = 4.3/5.2 X 10(4) L/mol) for Fe3+ and Cu2+ ions with luminescent quenching. Furthermore, the detection limit of the sensor is in the 10(-6) M level. The triplet state (T-1 = 23364 cm(-1)) of H4dcppa studied by the Gd(III)-MOF and Gd-5 demonstrates that the ligand ideally populates Eu(III)/Tb(III) emission with luminescent quantum yields (Phi(overall) ) of 11.2% for Eu-1, 27.6% for Eu-2, 18.5% for Eu- 3, and 62% for Tb-4, respectively.

Abstract:A series of Eu/Gd-mixed metal-organic frameworks Eu x Gd ( 1-x N DC（x = 0.0005, 0.001, 0.003, 0.01;H2 NDC = 1,4-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid） utilizing back energy transfer have been developed for physiological temperature sensing. The suitable high triplet level of H 2 NDC allows an efficient back energy transfer from Eu 3+ ions to ligands. The back energy transfer efficiency is further enhanced by the Eu 3+ /Gd（3+）-mixed strategy. As a consequence, the emission of Eu3+dramatically weakens when temperature arises. The resultant Eu0.0005 Gd0.9995 NDC exhibits exceptional stability and good biocompatibility, and can detect physiological temperature in single-emission, dual-emission, and colorimetric models with ultra-high sensitivity.

The targeted self-referencing luminescent thermometer Eu(0.0069)Tb(0.9931)-DMBDC (DMBDC = 2, 5-dimethoxy-1, 4-benzenedicarboxylate) based on two emissions of Tb(3+) at 545 nm and Eu(3+) at 613 nm is not only more robust, reliable, and instantaneous but also has higher sensitivity than the parent MOF Tb-DMBDC based on one emission at a wide range from 10 to 300 K.

Abstract:A new luminescent lanthanide metal-organic framework was synthesized under hydrothermal conditions by introducing the tetracarboxylic acid ligand (H(4)bptc) as a chromophore to sensitize the luminescence of the Tb3+ ion. Interestingly, despite the achiral nature of H(4)bptc, the resulting framework exhibited rare chiral helical channels. The luminescence studies revealed that this material showed a highly selective fluorescence quenching response to Fe3+ ions in liquid suspension, which can be conveniently observed by the naked eye under UV light. Thus, this material can be potentially used as a chemosensor for sensing Fe3+ ions and its selective luminescence quenching response can be explained in terms of the competitive absorption mechanism.

Abstract:A bimetallic EuxTb2−x‐MOF has been obtained and characterized, which exhibited color tunable emission and excellent temperature response in a range of 293–373 K, with the supreme relative sensitivity of 2.46%·K−1 at 373 K. Temperature in various scientific and industrial applications requires accurate detection and measurement. Herein, a range of novel isostructural lanthanide‐based metal–organic frameworks (Ln‐MOFs), [EuxTb2−x(3,5‐pdc)3(phen)2(H2O)2]n (x = 0, Tb‐MOF; x = 2, Eu‐MOF; x = 0.002, 0.010, 0.020, 0.040, 0.080, EuxTb2−x‐MOF), were solvothermally synthesized using 3,5‐pyridinedicarboxylic acid (3,5‐H2pdc) and 1,10‐phenanthroline (phen) as ligands. Based on binuclear second building units, Ln‐MOFs exhibited 2D layered structure with sql topology. The luminescent properties of series Ln‐MOFs show systematic tuning shifted from green to red by adjusting the ratio of Eu3+ to Tb3+. The temperature sensing experiments showed that Eu0.020Tb1.980‐MOF exhibited self‐calibration temperature response in a range of 293–413 K, achieving maximum relative sensitivity (Sr) 2.46%·K−1 at 413 K, outscoring many state‐of‐the‐art temperature sensors reported in literature. This study poses great promise of the newly designed Eu0.020Tb1.980‐MOF for the ultra‐sensitive temperature sensing in diverse and large‐scale applications.

Abstract:The application of one kind of metal-organic framework (MOF) material used in multiple fields is one of the most interesting research topics. In this work, four new tetra-nuclear cluster-based lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (LnMOFs) [Ln2(BTDB)3(DMA)(phen)]n (Ln = Tb TbMOF, Eu EuMOF, Gd GdMOF, Tb1.830Eu0.170 Tb,EuMOF, 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)-4',4″-dicarboxytriphenylamine = H2BTDB, 1,10-phenanthroline = phen) are obtained based on the ligand of H2BTDB that is synthesized in our laboratory, and the precise single-crystal structure of H2BTDB is obtained for the first time. The white phosphor was obtained by facilely hybridizing two components of the orange-yellow emission phosphor of Tb,EuMOF and the blue luminescence material of triphenylamine according to the trichromatic theory. At the same time, TbMOF, EuMOF, Tb,EuMOF, and the white phosphor can be used for information encryption, demonstrating their potential application in the field of anti-counterfeiting. Tb,EuMOF is also a multi-mode and self-calibrating thermometer within a broad temperature range of 110-300 K. Further studies show that EuMOF is a rapid response sensor for Fe2+, with a very low limit of detection of 2.0 nM, which is much lower than the national standards for Fe2+ (GB 5749-2005, 5.357 μM). It can achieve strong anti-interference detection of Fe2+ in actual samples of tap water and lake water. In addition, EuMOF can also be made into an easy-to-use sensing device of test paper for real-time and visual sensing of Fe2+.

Abstract:A series of neutral lanthanide metal–organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) with the formulas {[Ln4(L)3.5(μ3-OH)3(μ4-O)(H2O)2]·H2O} n (Ln = Sm for 1, Ln = Eu for 2, Ln = Gd for 3, H2L = 2,5-pyrazine dicarboxylic acid) were prepared by using the multicarboxylic acid 2,5-pyrazine dicarboxylic acid to control the hydrolysis of Ln3+ ions. The coordination sites of Ln3+ ions were partially occupied by L2–, leaving only a limited number of sites available for aqua coordination, which inhibited the further hydrolysis of Ln3+ ions to form the precipitates of lanthanide oxides/hydroxides. Finally, the three-dimensional metal frameworks of compounds 1–3 were formed by {Ln4O4} as secondary building units (SBUs) and organic ligand L2– as linkers. These three compounds showed high stability, and especially compound 2 exhibited high chemically stability. The solid-state fluorescence emission spectra showed that compound 2 exhibited the red characteristic emission of Eu3+ ions. The studies of the luminescence recognition of different organic solvents indicated that compound 2 had an obvious fluorescence recognition effect on n-hexane featuring luminescent quenching. Meanwhile, compound 2 showed a sensitive detection effect and good cyclic effect on CrO4 2– in water solution, suggesting that compound 2 might be used as a highly stable and sensitive fluorescent probe for CrO4 2– ions in aqueous medium. Besides, magnetic studies showed that compound 3 had large magnetocaloric effects with a −ΔS m value of 42.4 J kg–1 K–1 at 2 K and 7 T, which might be a potential cryogenic magnetic cooler.

Abstract:A new three-dimensional porous metal-organic framework, {[NH2(CH3)(2)][Zn(atz)(ox)]center dot H2O}(n) (1) (Hatz = 5-amino-1H-tetrazole, H(2)ox = oxalic acid), has been solvothermally synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, TG, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Complex 1 exhibits an anionic framework that can be simplified as a rarely reported 4-connected lon network. Complex 1 could be utilized as a platform for emission tuning by doping different lanthanide ions. In addition, gas adsorption studies reveal that 1 has a high isosteric heat of CO2 and good adsorption selectivity for CO2 over CH4 and N-2.

Abstract:Ratiometric luminescent temperature sensing based on a single matrix is highly desirable at current. However, the adjustments of temperature response range and sensitivity are still a huge challenge. Herein, a novel series of isostructural three-dimensional (3D) lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) {[Ln4(ebdc)6(DMF)2.75(H2O)7]}n (HPU-99, where Ln = Eu and EuxTb1-x, H2ebdc = 5-ethynyl-isophthalic acid) are synthesized by solvothermal method using 5-ethynyl-isophthalic acid ligand (H2ebdc). Notably, a series of Ln-MOFs EuxTb1-x-HPU-99 (x = 0.05, 0.1, 0.2) are obtained by adjusting the proportion of Eu3+/Tb3+ in bimetallic materials, which exhibit temperature dependent luminescent behavior with fluorescence color gradient and demonstrate that chemical components would affect ratiometric luminescent temperature sensing performance. Furthermore, the luminescence of HPU-99 is altered after the argentophilic alkynyl groups anchor the silver nanoclusters (Ag NCs). This work showcases that bimetallic Ln-MOFs have great potential in luminescent sensing at an atomically precise level.

Abstract:Thermal sensing and imaging in the physiological temperature range are of great importance for studying physiological processes and treating diseases. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit great promise for developing luminescent thermometers due to their remarkable structural diversities and tunable luminescence properties. Here, we synthesized a series of luminescent mixed-lanthanide MOFs, Eu(x)Tbi(1-x),BPT (x = 0.019, 0.058, 0.106; H3BPT = biphenyl-3,4',5-tricarboxylate acid) and adopted powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) to characterize the resulting products. The temperature-dependent photoluminescence emission spectra were recorded to investigate their potential applications in physiological temperature readout. It is found that the intensity ratio of Tb3+ to Eu3+ is linearly correlated with temperature and the relative sensitivity is higher than 1.5%/degrees C over the entire physiological temperature range. Furthermore, the temperature-dependent luminescence color emission allows for visual colorimetric temperature measurements. Abstract:In this work, we prepared two types of isostructural Ln3+-based metal-organic frameworks (LnMOFs) under solvothermal conditions, where two structurally similar pyridine-containing dicarboxylate ligands, 6-(4-carboxyphenyl)nicotinic acid and [2,2'-bipyridine]-5,5'-dicarboxylic acid, were used as the organic linkers. The as-synthesized LnMOF compounds were characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), powder XRD, and thermogravimetric analysis. With the lanthanide co-doping approach, two mixed LnMOFs, Tb0.95Eu0.05cpna and Tb0.95Eu0.05bpydc, were obtained and evaluated for application as potential ratiometric luminescence thermometers. The temperature-dependent luminescence of the two materials was investigated, and their emission intensities, luminescence lifetimes, and thermometric parameters were compared. They exhibit an excellent S-shaped response for temperatures in the range of 25-300 K, with favorable relative sensitivity and temperature uncertainty. Moreover, their color changes from green at 25 K to red at 300 K, so that they are also suitable as colorimetric luminescent probes.

Abstract:An important result of research on mixed-lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (M'LnMOFs) is the realization of highly sensitive ratiometric luminescent thermometers. Here, we report the design and synthesis of the new M'LnMOF Tb0.80Eu0.20BPDA with high relative sensitivity in the physiological temperature regime (298-318 K). The emission intensity and luminescence lifetime were investigated and compared to those of existing materials. It was found that the temperature-dependent luminescence properties of Tb0.80Eu0.20BPDA are strongly associated with the distribution of the energy levels of the ligand. Such a property can be useful in the design of highly sensitive M'LnMOF thermometers.
A Family Of Doped Lanthanide Metal-Organic Frameworks For Wide-Range Temperature Sensing And Tunable White Light Emission

Abstract:A family of lanthanide MOFs (LnL) with high thermal and air stability have been successfully synthesized. Based on this robust framework, a series of binary and ternary co-doped LnMOFs, EuxTbyL (y = 1-x) and EuxTbyGd1-x-yL, are achieved for use as ratiometric temperature sensors and white-light-emitting materials. In a binary co-doped system, Eu0.0066Tb0.9934L and Eu0.0089Tb0.9911L show good linear responses to temperature with high sensitivities over a very wide range (from 77 K to 450 K), of which Eu0.0066Tb0.9934L exhibits a maximum relative sensitivity (S-m) of 3.76% K-1 at 450 K. This value is comparable to those of other excellent LnMOF thermometers reported recently whereas the response temperature range is greatly enlarged. The ternary mixed LnMOFs based on energy transfer of different lanthanide ions as ratiometric luminescent thermometers are firstly investigated, in which Eu0.013Tb0.060Gd0.927L displays an extremely high sensitivity (S-m = 6.11% K-1), representing one of the largest values reported so far in mixed LnMOFs. Furthermore, by virtue of carefully adjusting the composition of the mixed LnMOFs and the wavelength of excitation, the emission color can be systematically modulated and a tunable white light emission material, Eu0.0062Tb0.0087Gd0.9851L, is successfully developed.
