Abstract:In the rapidly developing areas of nanotechnology, nano-scale materials as heterogeneous catalysts in the synthesis of organic molecules have gotten more and more attention. In this review, we will summarize the synthesis of several new types of noble metal nanostructures (FePt@Cu nanowires, Pt@Fe2O3 nanowires and bimetallic Pt@Ir nanocomplexes; Pt-Au heterostructures, Au-Pt bimetallic nanocomplexes and Pt/Pd bimetallic nanodendrites; Au nanowires, CuO@Ag nanowires and a series of Pd nanocatalysts) and their new catalytic applications in our group, to establish heterogeneous catalytic system in green environments. Further study shows that these materials have a higher catalytic activity and selectivity than previously reported nanocrystal catalysts in organic reactions, or show a superior electro-catalytic activity for the oxidation of methanol. The whole process might have a great impact to resolve the energy crisis and the environmental crisis that were caused by traditional chemical engineering. Furthermore, we hope that this article will provide a reference point for the noble metal nanomaterials' development that leads to new opportunities in nanocatalysis.

Abstract:Nanoalloys (NAs), which are distinctly different from bulk alloys or single metals, take on intrinsic features including tunable components and ratios, variable constructions, reconfigurable electronic structures, and optimizable performances, which endow NAs with fascinating prospects in the catalysis field. Here, the focus is on NA materials for chemical catalysis (except photocatalysis or electrocatalysis). In terms of composition, NA systems are divided into three groups, noble metal, base metal, and noble/base metal mixed NAs. Their design and fabrication for the optimization of catalytic performance are systematically summarized. Additionally, the correlations between the composition/structure and catalytic properties are also mentioned. Lastly, the challenges faced in current research are discussed, and further pathways toward their development are suggested.
High-performance Heterogeneous Catalysis with Surface-Exposed Stable Metal Nanoparticles.

Abstract:Protection of metal nanoparticles from agglomeration is critical for their functions and applications. The conventional method for enhancing their stability is to cover them with passivation layers to prevent direct contact. However, the presence of a protective shell blocks exposure of the metal species to reactants, thereby significantly impeding the nanoparticles' utility as catalysts. Here, we report that metal nanoparticles can be prepared and used in a surface-exposed state that renders them inherently catalytically active. This strategy is realised by spatial confinement and electronic stabilisation with a dual-module mesoporous and microporous three-dimensional π-network in which surface-exposed nanoparticles are crystallised upon in situ reduction. The uncovered palladium nanoparticles serve as heterogeneous catalysts that are exceptionally active in water, catalyse unreactive aryl chlorides for straightforward carbon-carbon bond formation and are stable for repeated use in various types of cross couplings. Therefore, our results open new perspectives in developing practical heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:Catalysts play a pivotal role in modern industries, such as energy, pharmaceuticals, and petrochemicals, serving as cornerstone of high-tech production. Noble metals, such as gold, silver, and platinum group elements, possess the superb catalytic characteristics of high-temperature oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance, stable electrochemical performance, high catalytic activity, and so on. These characteristics offer excellent prospects for applications in catalysis. In this review, we summarize innovative approaches to regulating the size and morphology of nano-noble metal catalysts with different dimensions. We also showcase typical prominent examples of their applications in exhaust gas purification, battery manufacturing, water splitting, and selective hydrogenation. Finally, perspectives are discussed in terms of future research opportunities in the realm of noble metal nanocatalysts.

Abstract:The successful synthesis of noble-metal nanocrystals with controlled shapes offers many opportunities to not only maneuver their physicochemical properties but also optimize their figures of merit in a wide variety of applications. In particular, heterogeneous catalysis and surface science have benefited enormously from the availability of this new class of nanomaterials as the atomic structure presented on the surface of a nanocrystal is ultimately determined by its geometric shape. The immediate advantages may include significant enhancement in catalytic activity and/or selectivity and substantial reduction in materials cost while providing a well-defined model system for mechanistic study. With a focus on the monometallic system, this review article provides a comprehensive account of recent progress in the development of noble-metal nanocrystals with controlled shapes, in addition to their remarkable performance in a large number of catalytic and electrocatalytic reactions. We hope that this review article offers the impetus and roadmap for the development of next-generation catalysts vital to a broad range of industrial applications.

Abstract:Mesoporous metals have received increasing attention in catalysis and related applications because of their novel physicochemical properties and functional geometric features. Control of multicomponent compositions and crystalline structures of mesoporous metals is critical for their applications. Recently, mesoporous metals have gradually expanded from traditional metal-metal alloys to metal-metalloid/nonmetal alloys with random solids and/or ordered intermetallics. As new, highly efficient nanocatalysts, mesoporous metal-metalloid/nonmetal alloys not only increase the utilization efficiency of precious noble metals and accelerate electron/mass transfer but also introduce new functions and optimize the surface electronic structure of metal sites, all of which enhance their catalytic activity and stability and tune their catalytic selectivity. In this Perspective, we focus on the latest developments in this area, including the findings from our group regarding the rational design and targeted synthesis of mesoporous noble metal-metalloid/nonmetal alloy nanocatalysts. We summarize the current synthetic strategies for mesoporous noble metal-metalloid/nonmetal alloys and discuss key effects of crystalline mesoporosity and metalloid/nonmetal alloys in enhancing catalytic performances of noble metal catalysts. We also describe the current bottlenecks and major challenges to explore further directions in synthesis and applications of mesoporous noble metal-metalloid/nonmetal alloys.

Abstract:Metal nanoparticles hold great promise for heterogeneous catalysis due to their high dispersion, large concentration of highly undercoordinated surface sites, and the presence of quantum confinement effects, which can drastically alter their reactivity. However, the poor thermal stability of nano-sized particles limits their use to low temperature conditions and constitutes one of the key hurdles towards industrial application. The present perspective paper briefly reviews the mechanisms underlying nanoparticle sintering, and then gives an overview of emerging approaches towards stabilizing metal nanoparticles for heterogeneous catalysis. We conclude by highlighting the current needs for further developments in the field.

Abstract:Inorganic nanomaterials are widely used in heterogenous catalysis. With the development of nanoscience and nanotechnology, chemists can precisely control the size, morphology, and exposed facets of nanocrystals (NCs) in an elegant manner, further tailoring their catalytic performance towards diverse reactions. In this review, we focus on the design principles of high-performance catalysts using metal NCs and oxide NCs. Special attention is paid to the shape control and surface engineering of NCs. Some practically important heterogeneous catalytic reactions over nanocatalysts will be discussed. Finally, an outlook and perspective in nano-catalysis will be provided. The goal of this review is to discuss recent advances and perspective on heterogeneous catalysis using inorganic nanomaterials and motivate researchers to design efficient catalysts with high activity, selectivity and stability.

Abstract:: Noble metals are widely used in many fields, particularly in catalysis, due to their unique physical and chemical properties. However, their large-scale applications are limited, due to the high price, low reserves, easy agglomeration and the sintering of single component. The above problems can be effectively solved by constructing metal alloy nanocrystals and cerium oxide supported noble metal catalysts. In this review, we will summarize recent progress on the controlled synthesis and catalytic performances of noble metals/cerium oxide nanocatalysts. In detail, mainly based on our group’s work, we present the controlled synthetic approaches, the relationship between the structures and properties, and the catalytic applications of those catalysts with specific shapes and nanostructures. Finally, the future developments and challenges of the cutting-edge research on noble metal-based catalysts are prospected.

Abstract:Noble metals, which form a significant proportion of catalysts at present, are not sustainable, which necessitates the need for non-noble metal alternatives. This report contains a thorough analysis of data obtained from the CAS Content CollectionTM, pertaining to the recent development of non-noble metal catalysts, their usage, and applications. We herein identify the research trends since 2012 in four subfields: electrocatalysts, homogeneous catalysts, photocatalysts, and biocatalysts. Within the subfields, we present: the most reported catalysts; emerging catalyst substances; significant reactions, and applications; map of the cooccurrence of catalyst substances with their reactions and applications. With this article, we aim to provide a data driven overview of the complex publication landscape and unique scientific insights for a deeper understanding of the field.

Abstract:Nowadays, due to the worldwide growth demand of energy, over consumption of fossil fuel as well as their accompanying increased negative environmental impacts, the development of renewable energy systems, such as fuel cells and water electrolyzers, is becoming one of the “holy grail” for researchers. However, their large-scale applications have been severely limited by precious and unsustainable noble-metal electrocatalysts. Hence, it is highly desirable to develop robust electrocatalysts composed exclusively of low-cost and earth-abundant elements, to reduce or replace expensive and scarce noble-metals. Carbon-based nanomaterials, including heteroatoms-doped carbons and carbon-encapsulated metal materials, have recently attracted great interests because they show remarkable electrocatalytic performance and long-term stability for energy-related reactions, such as oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (OER), hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR), etc. This review summarizes the recent progress in heteroatoms-doped carbon and carbon-encapsulated metal materials, highlighting the promise as cost-efficient electrocatalysts. Finally, a prospective on the future development of these promising materials is offered.

Abstract:Noble metal-based multimetallic nanoparticles (NMMNs) have attracted great attention for their multifunctional and synergistic effects, which offer numerous catalytic applications. Combined experimental and theoretical studies have enabled formulation of various design principles for tuning the electrocatalytic performance through controlling size, composition, morphology, and crystal structure of the nanoparticles. Despite significant advancements in the field, the chemical synthesis of NMMNs with ideal characteristics for catalysis, including high activity, stability, product-selectivity, and scalability is still challenging. This review provides an overview on structure-based classification and the general synthesis of NMMN electrocatalysts. Furthermore, postsynthetic treatments, such as the removal of surfactants to optimize the activity, and utilization of NMMNs onto suitable support for practical electrocatalytic applications are highlighted. In the end, future direction and challenges associated with the electrocatalysis of NMMNs are covered.

Abstract:Noble metal-based nanoalloys (NAs) with different entropies have great potential in the field of energy and catalysis. However, the reported synthesis strategies are still very difficult to achieve the universal synthesis of small-sized alloys with controllable morphology. Here we develop a general synthesis strategy that combined cation exchange and spatial confinement (CESC). We used this method to construct a library covering 21 NAs from low to high entropies. Importantly, we also demonstrate that the method can controllably achieve framing of almost all the NAs obtained, which can be realized by adjusting the amount of non-precious metals, despite the differences in the number of elements. Moreover, the CESC method showed outstanding ability in suppressing the sintering of NAs and regulating the particle size of NAs. In the NAs library, the framed PtCu/HCN as redox electrocatalysts show superior properties. For methanol oxidation reaction (MOR), the specific and mass activities (7.02 mA cm-2 and 2.81 A mgPt-1) of PtCu/HCN are 28.1- and 13.4-fold enhancements than those of commercial Pt/C, and the peak current density is only attenuated by 5% after 50 k seconds chronoamperometry. For hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), It can operate at ultralow overpotential (23.5 mV, 10 mA cm-2) for 150 h, far exceeding most of the reported catalysts. Moreover, the catalyst is capable of long-term hydrogen evolution at ultra-low overpotentials. Our work offers opportunities for synthesizing framed superfine noble metal-based NAs with different entropies.

Abstract:Metal species with different size (single atoms, nanoclusters, and nanoparticles) show different catalytic behavior for various heterogeneous catalytic reactions. It has been shown in the literature that many factors including the particle size, shape, chemical composition, metal-support interaction, and metal-reactant/solvent interaction can have significant influences on the catalytic properties of metal catalysts. The recent developments of well-controlled synthesis methodologies and advanced characterization tools allow one to correlate the relationships at the molecular level. In this Review, the electronic and geometric structures of single atoms, nanoclusters, and nanoparticles will be discussed. Furthermore, we will summarize the catalytic applications of single atoms, nanoclusters, and nanoparticles for different types of reactions, including CO oxidation, selective oxidation, selective hydrogenation, organic reactions, electrocatalytic, and photocatalytic reactions. We will compare the results obtained from different systems and try to give a picture on how different types of metal species work in different reactions and give perspectives on the future directions toward better understanding of the catalytic behavior of different metal entities (single atoms, nanoclusters, and nanoparticles) in a unifying manner.

Abstract:Noble-metal nanoframes consisting of interconnected, ultrathin ridges have received considerable attention in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. The enthusiasm arises from the high utilization efficiency of atoms for significantly reducing the material loading while enhancing the catalytic performance. In this review article, we offer a comprehensive assessment of research endeavors in the design and rational synthesis of noble-metal nanoframes for applications in catalysis. We start with a brief introduction to the unique characteristics of nanoframes, followed by a discussion of the synthetic strategies and their controls in terms of structure and composition. We then present case studies to elucidate mechanistic details behind the synthesis of mono-, bi-, and multimetallic nanoframes, as well as heterostructured and hybrid systems.
