Abstract:Adsorption energy plays a crucial role in surface catalytic reactions and influences the performance of the catalysts. Machine learning offers a novel approach for the computation of adsorption energy. The selection of a crystal plane is critical for the calculation of the adsorption energy, with current research focusing on low-index crystal planes. The prediction of catalytic performance is challenging because of the complexity arising from the surface reactions occurring on multiple crystal planes. However, this challenge can be resolved by introducing effective descriptors and utilizing advanced machine learning methods. This study collected data from various sources, such as databases, literature, and Density Functional Theory calculations, and utilized machine learning to predict the adsorption energies of prevalent adsorbates on multiple crystal planes of several platinum group metals in catalytic reactions. New structural descriptors were developed by leveraging the expertise of material researchers, and feature engineering techniques were employed to improve the predictive accuracy of the machine learning model. To prevent data loss and detect potential regularities, new features are created using symbolic regression. The introduction of these new features significantly enhanced the model's performance, increasing R2 from 0.885 to 0.921, and providing innovative concepts for future catalyst design.
