Abstract:This novel organohydrogel featured toughness, tolerance to extreme environment, as well as excellent recognition capability to multiple stimuli. Conductive hydrogels have attracted widespread attention in diverse applications. However, the fragile nature of conducting polymers hinders the long‐time stability of the hydrogels. What's more, hydrogels will lose elasticity and conductivity at room temperature or sub‐zero temperature because of the high water content. Herein, we proposed a long‐term stable and anti‐freezing organohydrogel with high stretchability (up to 1140%), which consist of multi‐functional nano‐micelles (Pluronic F127 diacrylate [F127DA]), Polyacrylamide, and Poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene): polystryrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) in a water/glycerin binary solvent system. The gel is thermal tolerant to maintain all the properties under extreme wide temperature spectrum (−40°C or 60°C). More importantly, the organohydrogel possesses excellent recognition capability to multiple stimuli. It is anticipated that this organohydrogel will have great potential in sensing applications.

Abstract:There is a great demand for the fabrication of soft electronics using hydrogels due to their biomimetic structures and good flexibility. However, conventional hydrogels have poor mechanical properties, which restricts their applications as stretchable sensors. Herein, a facile one-step strategy is proposed to fabricate tough and conductive hydrogels by making use of the graftability of carboxymethyl chitosan without extra conductive matter and crosslinking agent. The obtained polyacrylamide/carboxymethyl chitosan composite hydrogels possess outstanding transmittance and excellent mechanical performances, with tensile breaking stress of 630 kPa, breaking strain of 4560 %, toughness of 8490 kJ/m(3). These hydrogels have low modulus of 5-20 kPa, fast recoverability after unloading, high conductivity of similar to 0.85 S/m without the addition of other conductive substances and good biocompatibility. The ionic conductivity of the gels originates from the counterions of carboxymethyl chitosan, affording the hydrogels as resistive-type sensors. The resultant hydrogel sensors demonstrate a broad strain window (0.12-1500 %), excellent linear response, high sensitivity with the gauge factor reaching 11.72, and great durability, capable of monitoring diverse human motions. This work provides a new strategy to develop stretchable conductive hydrogels with promising applications in the fields of artificial intelligence and flexible electronics.

Abstract:Hydrogels as flexible sensor have attracted significant attention due to its conductivity, stretchability and flexibility. However, it is still a great challenge to prepare hydrogels that simultaneously possess high strength, anti-fatigue, self-adhesion, and anti-freezing. Herein, a multifunctional dual-network hydrogel was prepared by in situ polymerization of acrylic monomer in chitosan chains, and coordinated with aluminum chloride and glycerol. Based on chain entanglement, hydrogen bonding and coordination interactions, this dual-network hydrogel exhibited excellent mechanical properties, good fatigue resistance, and excellent adhesion performance. It can be used as a strain sensor for its stable conductivity and high sensitivity, which could monitor both large human motions and subtle motions. Due to the presence of glycerol, the hydrogel showed outstanding freezing resistance and still kept flexible and conductive even at low temperatures (−20 °C). This hydrogel can be applied as a flexible wearable sensor for monitoring human motion in extreme low-temperature condition.

Abstract:Conventional hydrogel sensors are always restricted in real applications due to weakness in mechanical properties, freezing and dehydration ability, as well as limited sensing functionality. Herein, a multifunctional nanocomposite organohydrogel is constructed by polyvinyl alcohol, tannic acid green reduction of graphene oxide with ethylene glycol-water (EG/H 2 O) binary solvent through a common freezing-thawing process to overcome the above challenges. The organohydrogel shows favorable stretchability (369%), tensile toughness (up to 1850.48 KJ/m3) and strength (tensile/compressive strength of 603 kPa/2181.63 kPa). Meanwhile, it exhibits a super anti-freezing (−133.7 °C) and moisturizing performance. As multifunctional sensors (strain/pressure/temperature sensors), it shows stable and sensitive detection in a large temperature range, and fast response (66 ms/5 ms as a strain/pressure sensor respectively). This high-performance multifunctional organohydrogel shows promising potential in flexible electronic devices, electronic skin and soft robots.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have attracted considerable attention owing to their potential for use as electronic skin and sensors. However, the loss of the inherent elasticity or conductivity in cold environments severely limits their working conditions. Generally, organic solvents or inorganic salts can be incorporated into hydrogels as cryoprotectants. However, their toxicity and/or corrosive nature as well as the significant water loss during the solvent exchange present serious difficulties. Herein, a liquid-like yet non-toxic polymer-polyethylene glycol (PEG) was attempted as one of the components of solvent for hydrogels. In the premixed PEG-water hybrid solvent, polyacrylamide (PAAm) was in situ polymerized, overcoming the inevitable water loss induced by the high osmotic pressure of the PEG solution and achieving tailored water capacity. Interestingly, the mechanical strength ("soft-to-rigid" transition) and anti-freezing properties of organohydrogels can be simultaneously tuned over a very wide range through adjusting PEG content. This was due to that with increasing PEG in solvent, the PAAm chains transformed from stretching to curling conformation, while PEG bonded with water molecules via hydrogen bonds, weakening the crystallization of water at subzero temperature. Additionally, a highly conductive Ti3C2Tx-MXene was further introduced into the organohydrogels, achieving a uniform distribution triggered by the attractive interaction between the rich functional groups of the nanofillers and the polymer chains. The nanocomposite hydrogels demonstrate high electrical conductivity and strain sensitivity, along with a wide working temperature window. Such a material can be used for monitoring human joint movement even at low temperature and has potential applications in wearable strain sensors.

Abstract:Stretchable, conductive, and antifreezing organohydrogels with double‐crosslinked structure are prepared by the free radical polymerization and solvent exchange. Due to a synergistic effect between the triethylene glycol and NaCl, the organohydrogels remained flexible and conductive at −30°C, making the fabricated flexible strain sensor can work at low temperatures. Recently, the wearable electronic devices have attracted extensive attention while the low stretchability and freezing‐induced performance deterioration largely limit the applications in many fields. In this work, the poly(acrylamide‐co‐maleic acid) hydrogels are immersed in the triethylene glycol/sodium chloride/water solution to establish the dual‐crosslinked organohydrogels, which present the extraordinary stretchability (1322 ± 75%) ascribed to the energy dissipation of physical interactions and stability of chemical crosslinked networks. Triethylene glycol forms strong hydrogen bonds with water, which interfere with the formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonds among water molecules at low temperatures and inhibit the formation of ice crystals in the organohydrogel networks. Sodium chloride imparts excellent electrical conductivity to the organohydrogel. As a result, a stretchable electronic sensor based on the organohydrogel is fabricated, which is strain‐sensitive with a wide strain sensing window (0%–440%) and excellent stability. More importantly, the sensor based on the as‐prepared organohydrogel could precisely detect various activities of the human model at −30°C leading to the widely application prospects.

Abstract:As a three-dimensional cross-linked network polymer with electrical conductivity, the ionic conductive hydrogel has enormous application potential in electronic devices, bionic skin, sensors, and other regions. However, due to the limitations of poor mechanical properties and single functionality, conductive hydrogels are difficult to fully meet the application requirements. In this paper, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and tannic acid (TA) were used as raw materials, DMSO/H2O binary solvent system was selected, and NaCl was introduced to construct an ionic organohydrogel with high strength, high toughness, stretchability, frost resistance and ionic conductivity. To demonstrate the application, PVA-TA organohydrogel was used as a wire to light up the LED in circuit and can be used as a touch screen pen for electronic screen painting. Besides, PVA-TA organohydrogel had high sensitivity to both tensile deformation and compression deformation. So it can monitor the movement of the hand and provide a path for flexible mechanical sensors. This new organohydrogel has considerable application prospects in the fields of antifreeze materials and multifunctional sensors.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have attracted much attention because of their adjustable mechanical properties and excellent electrical conductivity. However, the variability and conductivity of traditional conductive hydrogels will be greatly reduced in low temperature environment, which seriously affects their application range. In this study, we fabricated a dual network conductive hydrogel with frost resistance. Here, water and glycerol binary solvents are introduced into the hydrogel to give the hydrogel antifreezing properties. The double-network structure of PAA/CMCs-Ca 2+ (W-G) hydrogel can provide good tensile and energy dissipation properties. The hydrogel strain sensor has high sensitivity (strain coefficient is 3.294 in the range of 100 ~ 250%, strain coefficient is 6.986 in the range of 250 ~ 400%) and good stability. PAA/CMCs-Ca 2+ (W-G) hydrogel has a great potential application in human signal detection.

Abstract:As flexible wearable devices, hydrogel sensors have attracted extensive attention in the field of soft electronics. However, the application or long-term stability of conventional hydrogels at extreme temperatures remains a challenge due to the presence of water. Antifreezing and antidrying ionic conductive organohydrogels were prepared using cellulose nanocrystals and gelatin as raw materials, and the hydrogels were prepared in a water/glycerol binary solvent by a one-pot method. The prepared hydrogels were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The mechanical properties, electrical conductivity, and sensing properties of the hydrogels were studied by means of a universal material testing machine and LCR digital bridge. The results show that the ionic conductive hydrogel exhibits high stretchability (elongation at break, 584.35%) and firmness (up to 0.16 MPa). As the binary solvent easily forms strong hydrogen bonds with water molecules, experiments show that the organohydrogels exhibit excellent freezing and drying (7 days). The organohydrogels maintain conductivity and stable sensitivity at a temperature range (−50 °C–50 °C) and after long-term storage (7 days). Moreover, the organohydrogel-based wearable sensors with a gauge factor of 6.47 (strain, 0−400%) could detect human motions. Therefore, multifunctional organohydrogel wearable sensors with antifreezing and antidrying properties have promising potential for human body monitoring under a broad range of environmental conditions.

Abstract:Recently, conductive hydrogels have gained great attention in intelligent wearable devices, but the simultaneous realization of stretchability, transparency, anti-freezing, self-healing, and adhesion properties by an easy method are still a big challenge. Herein, a novel multifunctional organohydrogel based on noncovalent intermolecular interactions was developed by simply polymerization hydroxyethyl acrylamide (HEAA) in LiCl cryoprotectant/water (Cryo/water) solution via one-pot photo-polymerization method. Hydrogen bonding interactions of PHEAA-PHEAA and PHEAA-Cryo were the main driving force for gel formation. The LiCl and cryoprotectant gave PHEAA-Cryo-LiCl organohydrogel good conductivity and anti-freezing properties, respectively. The effects of the gel composition on the mechanical, transparency, anti-freezing, and conductivity properties of PHEAA-Cryo-LiCl organohydrogels were researched in detail. Moreover, poly(hydroxyethyl acrylamide)-glycerin-lithium chloride (PHEAA-Gl-LiCl) organohydrogel displayed good self-healing and adhesion properties owing to the reversible hydrogen bonding. Based on PHEAA-Gl-LiCl organohydrogel, a strain sensor was prepared for detecting human movements within a wide temperature range (−40 °C–25 °C), and the result showed various human motions could be detected stably, including joint movement, making a fist, swallowing or pronouncing, suggesting the potential applications for the next generation of intelligent wearable sensors.

Engineering robust and transparent dual-crosslinked hydrogels for multimodal sensing without conductive additives

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels are pivotal for the advancement of flexible sensors, electronic skin, and healthcare monitoring systems, facilitating transformative innovations. However, issues such as inadequate intrinsic compatibility, mismatched mechanical properties, and limited stability curtail their potential, resulting in compromised device efficacy and performance degradation. In this research, we engineered functional hydrogels featuring a dual-crosslinked network composed of (PA/PVA)-P(AM-AA) to address these challenges. This design eliminates the need for conductive additives, thereby enhancing intrinsic compatibility. Notably, the hydrogels exhibit exceptional mechanical properties, with high tensile strength (∼700 %), Young's modulus (∼5.33 MPa), increased strength (∼2.46 MPa) and toughness (∼6.59 MJ m-3). They also achieve a compressive strength of ∼7.33 MPa at 80 % maximal compressive strain and maintain about 89 % transparency. Moreover, flexible sensors derived from these hydrogels demonstrate enhanced multimodal sensing capabilities, including temperature, strain, and pressure detection, enabling precise monitoring of human movements. The integration of multiple hydrogels into a three-dimensional sensor array facilitates detailed spatial pressure distribution mapping. By strategically applying dual-crosslinked network engineering and eliminating conductive additives, we have streamlined the design and manufacturing of hydrogels to meet the rising demand for high-performance wearable sensors.
Anti-freezing, Resilient and Tough Hydrogels for Sensitive and Large-Range Strain and Pressure Sensors

Abstract:Hydrogel sensors are peculiarly attractive in flexible wearable electronics due to the stretchability and strain-responsive ability. However, flexible sensors (e.g. electronic skin) in practice require to perceive both strain and pressure concurrently and repeatedly, which put forward an imperative demand for multi-model and durable hydrogel sensors. Additionally, freezing intolerance is also an urgent problem to be addressed for low-temperature applications of hydrogel sensors. Herein, we constructed a wearable multi-model hydrogel sensor featuring with sensitive and large-range strain and pressure detection capacity, together with long-term stability and wide operating temperature range, based on a resilient, anti-fatigue and freezing-tolerant chitosan-poly (hydroxyethyl acrylamide) double-network (CS-PHEAA DN) hydrogel, which was fabricated via post-cross-linking CS-PHEAA composite hydrogel into Na(3)Cit solution. The ions simultaneously furnished the hydrogel with superior mechanics (stretchability, supercompressibility, excellent resilience and remarkable fatigue resistance), prominent ionic conductivity and low temperature tolerance. Impressively, the assembled hydrogel sensor exhibited preeminent sensitivity and cycling stability on detecting multi-type and large-range deformation (elongation, compression and bend), pressure and various human motions even at low temperatures. Remarkably, the fabricated hydrogel/aluminum hybrid combination serving as a flexible sensor maintained mechanical advantages, sensitive sensing capacity and good durability within a wide temperature range. This work provides a feasible method to construct anti-freezing, durable and multi-mode hydrogel sensors with high sensitivity and large-range detection capacity and paves a way for versatile applications in electronic skin, human-motion detection and intelligence device.

Abstract:Ionic conductive hydrogels are an ideal material for use in flexible strain sensors due to their electrical conductivity, accurate data retrieval, and extensibility. However, conventional ionic conductive hydrogels including salt/organics or salt-based hydrogels with high ionic content exhibit modest antifreeze and limited mechanical properties, hampering their practical use across diverse sectors. The preparation process is tedious due to the incorporation of toxic photoinitiator and chemical crosslinking agents. Herein, through a simple, low-cost, and environmentally friendly strategy, we have developed a multi-crosslinked double network ionic conductive hydrogel by using polyvinyl alcohol bearing styrylpyridinium groups (PVA-SbQ) and sodium alginate (SA) via UV irradiation, followed by immersion in a mixed solution of ferric chloride (FeCl 3 ) and glycerol (Gly)/water. This synergistic effect of FeCl 3 and Gly has endowed the PVA-SbQ/SA/FeCl 3 /Gly hydrogel with exceptional mechanical properties (tensile strength of 2.48 ± 0.45 MPa and elongation at break of 1452 ± 101 %), anti-freezing ability (-42.3 °C), and electrical conductivity of 0.38 S/m and 0.32 S/m at room temperature and −30 °C, respectively. Moreover, the hydrogel exhibits remarkable strain sensitivity (GF = 2.49), allowing it to be used as a strain sensor under both room temperature and subzero conditions. Consequently, the prepared hydrogel sensor can monitor various human motions, such as joint bending, running, and speaking. Therefore, our work offers a promising strategy for the preparation of PVA-based hydrogels with outstanding mechanical properties, electrical conductivity, and resistance to freezing, rendering them a practical option for flexible sensors. In addition, our anti-freezing method has significant potential in enhancing the accessibility of ionic conductive hydrogels.

Abstract:Ionic conductive hydrogels used as flexible wearable sensor devices have attracted considerable attention because of their easy preparation, biocompatibility, and macro/micro mechanosensitive properties. However, developing an integrated conductive hydrogel that combines high mechanical stability, strong adhesion, and excellent mechanosensitive properties to meet practical requirements remains a great challenge owing to the incompatibility of properties. Herein, we prepare a multifunctional ionic conductive hydrogel by introducing high-modulus bacterial cellulose (BC) to form the skeleton of double networks, which exhibit great mechanical properties in both tensile (83.4 kPa, 1235.9% strain) and compressive (207.2 kPa, 79.9% strain) stress-strain tests. Besides, the fabricated hydrogels containing high-concentration Ca2+ show excellent anti-freezing (high ionic conductivities of 1.92 and 0.36 S/m at room temperature and -35 degrees C, respectively) properties. Furthermore, the sensing mechanism based on the conductive units and applied voltage are investigated to the benefit of the practical applications of prepared hydrogels. Therefore, the designed and fabricated hydrogels provide a novel strategy and can serve as candidates in the fields of sensors, ionic skins, and soft robots.

Abstract:Hydrogel-based sensors have drawn wide attention in the fields of medical monitoring, electronic skin, human-machine interfaces, and so forth. So far, although the research of hydrogel-based sensors has made great progress, there are still some problems hindering their further developments, such as poor mechanical flexibility, inadequate anti-freezing capability, and weak self-adhesive and antibacterial properties. Herein, a multipurpose hydrogel (GG/PAAm/PA/LiCl) is facile prepared by the thermally-initiated radical polymerization method. The natural guar gum (GG) and chemically cross-linked polyacrylamide (PAAm) chains based dual-network structures endow the hydrogel with excellent stretchability (2102%) and tensile strength (117 kPa). Meanwhile, the hydrogel exhibits extraordinary low-temperature tolerance due to the synergistic effects of phytic acid (PA) and lithium chloride (LiCl), which can basically maintain its original mechanical properties even after being stored at -50 °C for 15 days. Moreover, the introduction of natural biomolecule PA has also contributed to the superior self-adhesive property and prominent antibacterial activity. Furthermore, as a strain sensor with wide sensing range (5-500%) and remarkable signal stability (800 cycles at 200% strain), which displays attractive application prospects in rehabilitation training monitoring and information transmission. Owing to the outstanding anti-freezing capability, the hydrogel-based sensor is also capable of precisely sensing the bending movements of a prosthetic finger in an extreme weather condition of -50 °C. This work provides a new horizon to develop extraordinary freezing-tolerant hydrogels with multiple properties for future wearable electronics and artificial intelligence.

Abstract:Low-temperature tolerant and solvent-resistant soft electronic devices have received increasing attention due to their excellent adaptability under multiple environments. Herein, the poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and zwitterionic betaine (ZB) are introduced into the Al3+ cross-linked polyacrylic acid (PAA) networks to construct a multipurpose hydrogel (PAA-Al3+/PEDOT:PSS/ZB), which exhibits superior stretchability (1457 %), tensile strength (1.43 MPa), freeze-tolerance (−35 °C) and solvent-resistant capability. Furthermore, a strain sensor with multi-environmental stability is fabricated based on this hydrogel, which could not only accurately monitor the different human motions (finger bending, writing, swallowing, breathing, walking, head-up/down and wrist-up/down) at room temperature, but also reliably distinguish the various mechanical deformations in diverse solvent media (water, cyclohexane and methylbenzene) and harsh climatic condition (−35 °C). In addition, a flexible tube-shaped PAA-Al3+/PEDOT:PSS/ZB hydrogel is also successfully developed in the specific reaction mold, which can be utilized as a soft connection for the tap or two severed glass tubes to transport different liquids benefiting from the significant mechanical toughness and anti-swelling property. It is anticipated that the as-prepared hydrogel may be a promising flexible material with multi-environmental stability applying in biomedical devices, soft robotics, electronic skins and wearable sensors under complex environments.
