Abstract:In this work, MnFe2O4/sepiolite composite as PMS catalyst was prepared via a hydrothermal method. The improved reaction rate constant was obtained in the MnFe2O4/sepiolite/PMS system for tetracycline (TC) degradation (0.13227 min−1), which was around 1.94 times that of pure MnFe2O4. The composites possessed improved TC degradation properties, which could be attributed to the deposition of MnFe2O4 on the sepiolite surface, leading to more reaction active sites of adsorption and degradation. The point of zero charges (pHpzc) of the composite was about at 6.64. The quenching experiments results indicated that not only SO4•-, •OH and •O2−, but also 1O2 participated in TC degradation, and the 1O2 species were the major oxidation species. Furthermore, the surface hydroxyl groups and redox cycle of iron ions and manganese ions were important responsible for TC efficient degradation. The TC degradation mechanisms and possible degradation pathways were proposed. Moreover, the toxicity of intermediates was also evaluated. In brief, this work provides a new insights for the rational design of environmentally friendly and effective catalysts for wastewater treatment by activating PMS.
