Abstract:Given the severe environmental issues caused by the abuse of malachite green (MG), it is imperative to develop highly sensitive fluorescent probes to quantify environmental MG residues. Herein, the rationally designed powerful ratiometric fluorescent probe, RB@Zr- fcu -sti (RB = Rhodamine B), was successfully employed for ultra-sensitive sensing of MG. Importantly, RB@Zr- fcu -sti with appropriate pore sizes can efficiently adsorb and preconcentrate MG, facilitating donor–acceptor interaction between RB and MG within the pores of Zr- fcu -sti (i.e. shortening the spatial distance between RB molecules and MG molecules), thus remarkably raising the Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) and photoinduced electron transfer (PET) efficiency between them. Based on the synergistic effect of FRET and PET mechanisms, the red fluorescence emitted from RB can be significantly quenched by MG, while the blue emission of Zr- fcu -sti is virtually unaffected, displaying a distinguishable color evolution from purple to blue. For sensing applications, the method exhibits high sensitivity with an impressive detection limit as low as 2.69 nM. Additionally, integrated with RGB analysis, such ratiometric-sensing method could be applied as a reliable quantitative method for rapid, field-visible detection of MG. This work not only presents an ultra-sensitive fluorescence-based analytical approach for sensing MG but also validates the effectiveness and feasibility of the adsorption-based preconcentration strategy in the rational design of ultra-sensitive fluorescent probes.
