Abstract:Solid-state batteries (SSB) have received increasing attention as a next-generation energy storage technology due to their potential in delivering superior energy density, power density and safety compared to commercial Li-ion batteries. One of the main challenges limiting their practical implementation is the rapid capacity decay caused by the loss of contact between cathode active material and solid electrolyte upon cycling. Here we use the promising high voltage, low-cost spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) as a model system to demonstrate the importance of the cathode microstructure in SSBs. We design Al2O3-coated LNMO particles with a hollow microstructure aimed at suppressing electrolyte decomposition, minimise volume change during cycling and shorten the Li-diffusion pathway to achieve maximum cathode utilisation and improve areal capacity. When cycled with a Li6PS5Cl solid electrolyte and a Li-In anode, we demonstrate capacity retention above 70% after 100 cycles with an active material loading of 27 mg/cm2 (2.2 mAh/cm2) at a current density of 0.8 mA/ cm2.

Surprisingly, the LMB of Li|LNFP50|LiFePO4 cell at 0.5 C current density shows good cycling stability (151.5 mAh g-1 for 500 cycles, 96.5% capacity retention, and 99.3% Coulombic efficiency), and high-energy LMB of Li|LNFP50|Li[Ni0.8 Co0.1 Mn0.1 ]O2 cell maintains 80% capacity retention after 170 cycles, which are better than that with traditional liquid electrolytes (LEs). This investigation offers a new approach to commercializing SSEs with excellent comprehensive performance for high-performance LMBs.

Therefore, the development of next-generation batteries is of great technical interest nowadays. Solid state lithium batteries have attracted considerable attention because the replacement of an organic liquid electrolyte with a safer and more reliable inorganic solid electrolyte simplifies the battery design and improves safety and durability of the battery [1]. A crucial material to develop solid state batteries is a solid electrolyte with high Li+ ion conductivity at room temperature. Among different kinds of solid electrolytes, inorganic sulfide-based solid electrolytes are one of the most promising candidates for solid state lithium batteries due to the high ionic conductivity, wide electrochemical window and ease of forming framework structures [2-3]. However, there are still many challenges for the commercialization of solid state lithium batteries with sulfide-based electrolyte [4-5], for instance, the electrolyte/electrodes interface and air stability of sulfide-based electrolytes need to be further improved, and advanced manufacturing technologies are required as well. In this presentation, several strategies to enhance ionic conductivity of sulfide-based solid electrolytes are deliberated; an ionic conductivity as high as 3.0 mS/cm has been achieved. We will then summarize the research progresses of solid state lithium batteries with sulfide-based electrolytes based on our work. Future research trends and perspectives for facilitating further improvement on the performance of sulfide-based solid state batteries will also be discussed. An in-situ generated composite solid-state electrolyte towards high-voltage lithium metal batteries

Abstract:The solid-state electrolyte (SSE) has promising applications in next-generation lithium (Li) metal batteries (LMBs) because of its significantly enhanced safety and more compatible interface characteristics than flammable traditional liquid electrolytes. However, only a few attempts have achieved high-performance high-voltage LMBs, which is attributed to the fact that both high ionic conductivity and good compatibility with electrodes can hardly be achieved simultaneously. Herein, a composite solid-state electrolyte (CSE) based on star-shaped siloxane-based polymer electrolyte coupled with Li6.75La3Zr1.75Ta0.25O12 (LLZTO) ceramic fillers is designed and prepared through a facile in-situ polymerization method. The obtained CSE exhibits high ionic conductivity (i.e., 1.68 × 10−4 S cm−1 at a temperature of 60 °C), superior anodic stability, and high Li-ion transference number (i.e., 0.53) because of the multifunctional synergistic effect of the polymer electrolyte with LLZTO ceramic fillers. Moreover, the as-developed CSE shows excellent compatibility with Li anodes. As a result, the as-developed CSE enables the development of long-life 4.4-V-class solid-state LMBs with a LiCoO2 cathode, with 79.7% capacity retention and 99.74% average Coulombic efficiency after 500 cycles at a 0.5 C rate. Postmortem analysis of cycled batteries confirms that such superior battery performance can be mainly ascribed to the formation of a compatible electrode/electrolyte interface. Furthermore, excellent safety features can be observed in LiCoO2/Li pouch batteries. This work provides an important guide for the rational design of SSEs for high-voltage LMBs.

Abstract:Solid-state lithium-metal batteries (SSLMBs) have been regarded as one of the most promising battery systems due to their high energy density and excellent safety. However, the low ionic conductivity of solid electrolyte (normally < 1 mS cm −1 ) does not meet the practical application of SSLMBs. Herein, we propose a vertically-aligned composite solid electrolytes (VA-CSE) with dual Li + transportation paths: one dimensional (1D) Li + -transportation highway in lithium montmorillonite (Li-MMT) layer along aligned poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) channels and unique Li + hopping path created by aggregated ions pairs in polymerized vinyl ethylene carbonate-based electrolyte. This Li-MMT/PVDF-HFP solid electrolyte (Li-MPSE) exhibits superionic conductivity of 1.99 mS cm −1 and high lithium transference number (0.73) at 30 °C. With this superior Li-MPSE electrolyte, Li/LiFePO 4 solid-state batteries stably cycle 200 times with 99.7% capacity retention at 0.5 C and pouch cell also presents excellent electrochemical performance and safety.

Abstract:Solid‐state electrolytes have been positioned as materials for the next‐generation batteries. Especially, all‐solid‐state lithium metal batteries are promising as they can realize high‐energy‐density, while being safe. This review summarizes recent, past five years, advancements in solid‐state electrolyte designs, and the performance of all‐solid‐state batteries, and provides an outlook for the next 5 years. The use of all‐solid‐state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs) has garnered significant attention as a promising solution for advanced energy storage systems. By employing non‐flammable solid electrolytes in ASSLMBs, their safety profile is enhanced, and the use of lithium metal as the anode allows for higher energy density compared to traditional lithium‐ion batteries. To fully realize the potential of ASSLMBs, solid‐state electrolytes (SSEs) must meet several requirements. These include high ionic conductivity and Li+ transference number, smooth interfacial contact between SSEs and electrodes, low manufacturing cost, excellent electrochemical stability, and effective suppression of dendrite formation. This paper delves into the essential requirements of SSEs to enable the successful implementation of ASSLMBs. Additionally, the representative state‐of‐the‐art examples of SSEs developed in the past 5 years, showcasing the latest advancements in SSE materials and highlighting their unique properties are discussed. Finally, the paper provides an outlook on achieving balanced and improved SSEs for ASSLMBs, addressing failure mechanisms and solutions, highlighting critical challenges such as the reversibility of Li plating/stripping and thermal runaway, advanced characterization techniques, composite SSEs, computational studies, and potential and challenges of ASS lithium–sulfur and lithium–oxygen batteries. With this consideration, balanced and improved SSEs for ASSLMBs can be realized.

Abstract:All-solid-state electrolytes provide a guarantee for the safe running of Li metal batteries (LMBs) with high energy density. Nevertheless, the low ionic conductivity and huge interfacial impedance between lithium anodes and electrolytes are the critical issues baffling their rapid development and practical application, particularly limiting their operation at room temperature. The introduction of ionic liquids (IL) is expected to solve the above problems. However, the effect of the IL-involved solid-state electrolytes on lithium dendrites suppression has not been clearly revealed and still necessitates in-depth evaluation. In this article, we report an in situ LiF-rich solidelectrolyte interphase (SEI) on the lithium anode triggered by reductive decomposition of IL and Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3-involved electrolyte. For the first time, the mechanism of SEI formed on Li metal based on IL-based solid-state electrolyte was unveiled. A combination of experimental and computational investigation manifests that the presence of Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3 promotes the release of fluorine anion from IL, and a SEI layer with high content of LiF can be generated in situ through the reductive decomposition of wandering fluorine anion. Thanks to the high mechanical modulus from Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3, the symmetric Li|Li batteries equipped with synthesized solid-state composite electrolyte (SSCE) exhibit extremely stable Li plating/stripping behavior for more than 2700 h with a small polarization voltage of 50 mV at 0.1 mA cm-2. Moreover, the assembled solidstate Li|LiFePO4 batteries based on SSCE could operate steadily for 196 cycles at ambient temperature, with 90.7% capacity retention. These results provide a promising insight into the design of SSCE and realization of room temperature solid-state LMBs with high performance.

Abstract:Significant progress has been made to replace graphite anode materials with Li metal in next-generation Li ion batteries, called Li metal batteries (LMBs). However, the development of practical LMBs requires the suppression of Li dendrites. Owing to their ability to relax polarization, single-ion solid polymer electrolytes (SSPEs) are widely considered as an effective strategy for preventing dendrite generation. The novel SSPE membrane prepared in this work, which consists of a polymeric lithium salt modified with an electrolyte solvent, shows single-ion conducting behavior that results in the effective restriction of Li dendritic growth. The SSPE membrane delivers an ionic conductivity as high as 1.42 × 10-4 S cm-1 at room temperature. A LiFePO4 (LFP) coin cell assembled with the SSPE membrane shows excellent rate performance and outstanding cycling stability. In addition, the LFP flexible battery using the SSPE membrane exhibits good practicability and environmental adaptability.
Bilayer Zwitterionic Metal‐Organic Framework for Selective All‐Solid‐State Superionic Conduction in Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:Solid‐state batteries (SSBs) hold immense potential for improved energy density and safety compared to traditional batteries. However, existing solid‐state electrolytes (SSEs) face challenges in meeting the complex operational requirements of SSBs. In this study, we introduce a novel approach to address this issue by developing a metal‐organic framework (MOF) with customized bilayer zwitterionic nano‐channels (MOF‐BZN) as high‐performance SSEs. The bilayer zwitterionic nano‐channels consist of a rigid anionic MOF channel with chemically grafted soft multi‐cationic oligomers (MCOs) on the pore wall. This design enables selective superionic conduction, with MCOs restricting the movement of anions while coulombic interaction between MCOs and anionic framework promoting the dissociation of Li+. MOF‐BZN exhibits remarkable Li+ conductivity (8.76 × 10−4 S cm−1), high Li+ transference number (0.75), and a wide electrochemical window of up to 4.9 V at 30°C. Ultimately, the SSB utilizing flame retarded MOF‐BZN achieves an impressive specific energy of 419.6 Wh kganode+cathode+electrolyte−1 under constrained conditions of high cathode loading (20.1 mg cm−2) and limited lithium metal source. An in Situ-Formed LiI Interface Layer for Garnet-Based Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:With regard to solid-state electrolytes (SSEs), garnet-type Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 (LLZT) is a promising option due to its high ionic conductivity and steadiness against lithium metal. However, trace impurities, like Li 2 CO 3 or LiOH, can be easily formed on its surface under ambient atmosphere and significantly influence the conductivity. Herein, the hydrogen iodide (HI) acid vapor is employed to remove surface impurities and a thin LiI layer was in situ generated concurrently. The layer exhibits surprising wetting behavior and high stability towards Li metal and SSE. Benefiting from its unique characteristics, the interface resistance between the LLZT electrolyte and lithium electrode decreased from 6160 to 30 Ω cm 2 , and the critical current density (CCD) value achieved 1.5 mA cm −2 at room temperature. Specifically, the lithium symmetric battery can cycle steadily for more than 1000 hours at a current density of 0.6 mA cm −2 . Moreover, a cumulative Li plating capacity of 0.63 Ah cm −2 can be attained. The assembled solid-state batteries (SSBs) show outstanding cycling stability over prolonged cycles at 0.1 C (LiFePO 4 /LiCoO 2 @room temperature) and a high rate capacity (LiFePO 4 : 104.2 mAh g −1 at 0.8 C). This work provides a plausible approach to interfacial issues, thereby paving the path for tangible advancements in SSBs.

Abstract:Li4Ti5O12, a commercial anode material, is used for solid state electrolyte for the first time via forming a composite with poly(vinylidene fluoride). Endowed by its ion transport ability and electrochemical activity, an electronic/ionic mixed conductive phase spontaneously forms at electrolyte‐lithium anode interface, which contributes to stable performance in solid lithium metal battery. In parallel with researches unveiling the nature and mechanism in solid state battery, numbers of investigations have been pursuing methods to stabilize their performance as well as to reduce the cost. Simple preparation and earth‐abundant ingredients are preconditions for a solid state electrolyte to be suitable for scalable production. In this work, a commercial anode active material, spinel Li4Ti5O12, is introduced for the first time, which has high ionic conductivity to sustain high rate charge/discharge with considerable high performance/cost ratio, into poly(vinylidene fluoride) to achieve a composite solid electrolyte. The membrane solid electrolyte containing 80 wt% of the Li4Ti5O12 (LTO‐8) shows outstanding ionic conductivity of 2.87 × 10−4 S cm−1 at 35 °C and inhibits electronic conductive network. The self‐sacrificed interface contributes to the stabilized performance of the composite. Li||LiFePO4 cells with LTO‐8 present a discharge specific capacity of 150 mAh g−1 at 0.5C and a considerable average specific capacity of 119 mAh g−1 under 5C in 400 cycles, demonstrating its excellent working performance. This investigation provides promising application of Li4Ti5O12 for solid state electrolytes, which is superior to the reported solid state electrolytes in comprehensive performance, and surely paves another commercial way to solid state batteries.

Abstract:Lithium Metal Batteries Lithium metal anodes exhibit over 400 Wh kg−1 energy density based on conversion chemistry and are being prioritized as the next generation of energy storage devices. In article number 2311687 by Shaohua Guo and co‐workers, various organic molecules, including polymer, fluorinated molecules, and organosulfur, are summarized, and insights into how to construct the corresponding elastic, fluorine‐rich, and organosulfur‐containing solid electrolyte interphases (SEIs) are provided. This review offers a design guideline for constructing organic molecule‐derived SEI and will inspire more researchers to concentrate on the exploitation of LMBs.

Abstract:A triple‐salt concentrated electrolyte is developed to achieve stable Li metal batteries with high‐loading cathodes. The underlying mechanism lies in the borate‐rich bilayer solid‐electrolyte interphase produced from preferential anion decomposition that enables uniform and dense Li deposition. The practical application of lithium metal batteries (LMBs) is largely hindered by the notorious lithium dendrite growth, low cycle efficiency associated with insufficient electrode–electrolyte interphase dynamics, and electrolyte combustion. Here, an advanced electrolyte using a combination of three kinds of salts dissolved in carbonate‐based solvents is developed. The salt anions dominate a primary solvation sheath, resulting in weak interaction between Li+ and the solvents, as well as the in situ formation of an inorganic‐rich bilayer solid electrolyte interface (SEI). The designed electrolyte enables high cycle stability in LMBs with a high‐loading NMC cathode (approximately 20 mg cm−2), exhibiting 89.89% capacity retention after 200 cycles with the cutoff voltage of 4.5 V. Cryo‐TEM characterization and density‐functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the borate‐based bilayer SEI, characterized by an exceptional dense structure, effectively suppresses lithium dendrite growth, and certify the crucial role of inorganic component continuity and density within the SEI, which surpasses the absorption and migration energy barrier in terms of significance. This profound understanding of SEI structure holds great potential for advancing the development of high‐stable LMBs and can be expanded to other battery system.

Abstract:Solid-state lithium metal batteries (LMBs) have been extensively investigated owing to their safer and higher energy density. In this work, we prepared a novel elastic solid-state polymer electrolyte based on an in situ-formed elastomer polymer matrix with ion-conductive plasticizer crystal embedded with Li6.5La3Zr1.5Ta0.5O12 (LLZTO) nanoparticles, denoted as LZT/SN-SPE. The unique structure of LZT/SN-SPE shows excellent elasticity and flexibility, good electrochemical oxidation tolerance, high ionic conductivity, and high Li+ transference number. The role of LLZTO filler in suppressing the side reactions between succinonitrile (SN) and the lithium metal anode and propelling the Li+ diffusion kinetics can be affirmed. The Li symmetric cells with LZT/SN-SPE cycled stably over 1100 h under a current density of 5 mA cm−2, and Li||LiFePO4 cells realized an excellent rate (92.40 mAh g−1 at 5 C) and long-term cycling performance (98.6% retention after 420 cycles at 1 C). Hence, it can provide a promising strategy for achieving high energy density solid-state LMBs.

Abstract:Although it has enhanced safety and high energy density, all-solid-state lithium metal battery (ASSLB) still faces challenges in achieving high ionic conductivity, uniform Li + flux, good interfacial compatibility, and enough mechanical strength in solid-state electrolytes (SSEs). In this work, we synthesized a composite solid electrolyte featuring an asymmetric bilayer structure (designated as 3MP-PSE) based on a crosslinked network of MOFs. The as-formed 3MP-PSE had high mechanical strength (16.8 MPa), satisfactory ionic conductivity (0.63 mS cm −1 ), high Li + transference number (0.64), and broad potential window (5.0 V). This unique solid electrolyte enabled uniform Li deposition to ensure good interfacial compatibility with lithium metal electrodes, as evidenced by XPS analysis, which effectively suppressed the growth of lithium dendrites. The Li–Li symmetric battery using the 3MP-PSE was proven to be stable over 400 h at a current density of 0.1 mA cm −2 . Moreover, the Li//3MP-PSE//LiFePO4 battery exhibited impressive electrochemical performance at room temperature, with a high reversible specific capacity of 159.6 mAh g −1 , a capacity retention of 82.7%, and an average Coulombic efficiency (CE) of 99.87% after 200 cycles at 0.2 C, demonstrating highly stable cycling performance of the battery.

Abstract:All-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs) that incorporate solid electrolyte (SE) and lithium metal anode suggest considerable potential in addressing the security concerns and energy density limitation of conventional lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the practical application of ASSLMBs is always restricted by the interfacial instability of lithium metal anode/electrolyte and inevitable lithium dendrites propagation in SE. Herein, a solvate ionic liquid is adopted to modify the interface stability of lithium metal anode/electrolyte and inhibit the growth of lithium dendrites via an in-situ formation of a robust solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the surface of lithium metal anode. Consequently, the ASSLMBs assembled with Li 6 PS 5 Cl (LPSCl) electrolyte, lithium metal anode that protected by robust SEI layer, and LiNbO 3 @NCM622 cathode exhibit high initial capacity of 126.5 mAh·g −1 and improved cycling stability with a capacity retention of 80.3% over 60 cycles at 0.1 C. This work helps to provide a facile route for the design of robust SEI in the application of ASSLMBs.

Abstract:Abstract Solid‐state electrolytes (SSEs) with sufficient ionic conduction, wide voltage window, flexible‐rigid interface, and ease of processibility are determinative to the development of energy‐dense solid‐state lithium metal batteries. Due to the low density and interfacial compatibility, polyether SSE has been studied for decades but remains handicapped by the inherently low ionic conductivity and insufficient voltage window. In this contribution, an ion‐dipole‐reinforced poly‐3‐hydroxymethyl‐3‐methyloxetane is demonstrated as a novel SSE and major substitution to conventional poly(ethylene oxide). By further polypropylene skeleton compositing, the composite solid electrolyte (PHMP) synergistically achieves high voltage tolerance (4.6 V), high ion‐conduction (25 °C, 1.26 × 10 −4 S cm −1 ), and flexible‐rigid mechanical properties. Cryo‐transmission electron microscope has revealed a columnar Li deposition and LiF‐rich solid electrolyte interface, suggesting excellent dendrite suppression. According to density functional theory, the densely branched ether–oxygen groups play an important role as ion solvation cages, favoring strong Li + ‐coordination and fast diffusion kinetics. More importantly, it restrains the proton‐induced decomposition and essentially enhances high‐voltage stability. As a result, PHMP contributes to an improved rate capability, significantly reduced interface impedance, and long‐term cycle stability of Li symmetrical batteries for over 1600 h. PHMP‐modified LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 |Li batteries exhibit a high discharge capacity of 211.5 mAh g −1 and desirable cycle stability.
