Abstract:In this work, a novel approach is proposed for precisely and swiftly identifying potential time-delays in datasets. This method utilizes a newly developed indicator, which is a statistical complexity measure defined by the methodology of nonlinear time series analysis incorporating the theory of multi-scale transition networks. The reliability of the proposed approach is demonstrated by numerical simulation results related to time series consisting of state variable measurements from the renowned Mackey–Glass equation. A detailed discussion is provided regarding the influence of the two inherent parameters of multi-scale transition networks on the proposed technique’s performance, which leads to an optimal pairing of these parameters. Furthermore, we have discovered that the proposed method demonstrates good robustness to datasets contaminated with observational or dynamical Gaussian white noise. This fine robustness is manifested in the following two ways: In the case of datasets impacted by observational Gaussian white noise, an interesting noise-enhanced phenomenon is observed, which implies that the new method’s identification performance is even more efficient in certain higher noise levels. In the scenario of datasets impaired by dynamical Gaussian white noise, our method’s identification capability surpassed that of both the classical delayed mutual information tool and the recently proposed technique that uses statistical complexity measures rooted in the ordinal pattern transition networks theory, at relatively higher noise intensities.
