Abstract:Microbial-induced carbonate precipitation technology (MICP) enables concrete to self-perceive and heal cracks by autonomously forming bio deposited minerals in the cracked area to fill defects and improve performance. However, the highly alkaline environment and the dense structure inside the concrete make it necessary to use rational methods to protect the bacteria to achieve improved healing effectiveness and performance. With further research on different types of mineralizing microorganisms as well as microbial carriers, different microbial self- healing agents have been gradually developed and experimentally applied in practical engineering. The purpose of this review is to provide a comprehensive and systematic overview of the latest advances in the existing laboratory work on microbial self-healing concrete, and to organize and summarize the applications from theoretical studies to practical engineering, so as to facilitate subsequent systematic and in-depth research. In this review, we first elaborate on the classification of microbial species based on the type of mineralization and whether or not they can produce spores, followed by different immobilization strategies in order to classify different microbial self-healing agents. The advantageous properties of microbial self-healing concrete, including crack self-healing, mechanical recovery, impermeability, and corrosion resistance of steel reinforcement, are summarized in order to conclude the suitable application environments. Finally, the practical application work on microbial self-healing concrete is summarized, leading to further clarification of the differences in research applications as well as directions for future work.
