Abstract:Arsenic(As), a detrimental impurity in Cu electrolyte, has historically been challenging to separate with Cu efficiently. Traditional two-stage sulfide for initial Cu recovery followed by As(V) removal from Cu electrolyte is criticized for the high As content in the Cu slag and excessive sulfide agent consumption. Herein, a four-stage continuous coupled sulfide process was developed, comprising two for Cu recovery followed by two for As(V) removal. Selective recovery of Cu and efficient removal of As(V) from the high As-bearing Cu electrolyte and the reduction of sulfide agent consumption were achieved through precise addition of Na 2 S(S 2- ). For Cu recovery, most Cu was selectively recovered with sub-stoichiometric S 2- first followed by fully recovering the remaining Cu with sufficient S 2- in the second stage. 98.53% (71.03%+27.50%) of total Cu was recovered with only 8.95% (2.84%+6.11%) As(V) precipitated. For the remaining As(V) removal, the third and fourth stages involve adding sub-stoichiometric S 2- to pre-reduce As(V), followed by adding sufficient S 2- to completely remove As. A total of 99.49% As(V) was precipitated solely with stoichiometric S 2- . Thermodynamic analysis and characterization results elucidate the selective recovery of Cu attributed to the maintenance of the appropriate concentration difference between Cu and As(V), which prevents As(V) reduction and precipitation. The pathway for As(V) precipitation was identified as H 3 AsO 4 →H 3 AsO 3 S→HAsO 2 →As 2 S 3 . Compared with the traditional method, the proposed method results in a 50% reduction in As precipitation into Cu slags, while also significantly reducing total S 2- consumption by nearly half. The proposed method is advantageous in the high Cu recovery, low S 2- consumption, and minimal generation of As-containing hazardous waste, promoting the sustainable development of the Cu smelting industry.
