Abstract:The paper investigates the impact of extending school schedules on the quality of mothers' employment. While the effect of childcare provision on women's participation in the labour force is well-documented, there is far less understanding of how such policies influence job quality – a gap in the literature that this research attempts to fill. This study specifically investigates how an increase in primary school instructional time in Chile – a policy that expanded the extensive margin of labour force participation (LFP), as shown in Berthelon et al. (2023) – affects what might be termed the 'intensive quality margin' of employment. The authors conclude that increased school hours are associated with better job outcomes for mothers, suggesting that more time for children in school enables women to secure higher-quality employment.
