Abstract:To meet the increasing lithium demands created by global electrification, a fast, flexible, inexpensive and sustainable mining process is needed, which is yet to be realized. Here we explore an untapped energy source that is inherent in all ion-separation processes to achieve spontaneous Li extraction with net energy production. The driving force comes from the huge concentration difference of counter ions (usually chloride) between the feeding and receiving solutions. Experimental results under various feeding compositions can be well explained by the Gibbs–Donnan equilibrium. Utilizing a Li-selective ceramic membrane and a chloride-storing silver electrode, we successfully achieved Li extraction from simulated brine with an energy output of 1.6 Wh mol Li −1 . The system is stable over 300 hours of operation, maintaining a high Li/Mg selectivity of 450. Moreover, even spontaneous enrichment can be achieved when the counter ion concentration is much greater than that of Li ion in the feeding brine. We anticipate that the concept of this work could not only reshape the Li supply chain but also seed a fundamental transformation of all ion-separation processes.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) has been considered as the backbone of modern energy infrastructures. In recent years, the production rate of Li has lagged behind the global demand due to the proliferation of electric devices and vehicles. To ensure a stable and sustainable supply of Li, electrochemical extraction of Li from unconventional aqueous sources, especially seawater containing almost inexhaustible Li resource, has received extensive attention. To proceed the way to real practices, this review covers a broad knowledge of electrochemical Li recovery processes, including cell configurations, working principles, and performance metrics. Specifically, Li-selective materials (electrodes, adsorbents, and membranes), pivotal to achieve superior Li selectivity and extraction performance, has been carefully summarized to spur innovative design strategies. Herein, an integrated system is conceived where electrochemical Li recovery unit functions as a bridge to connect desalination plant and battery industry, offering a feasible solution to circular economy at the water-energy nexus.

Abstract:The sustainability of lithium-based energy storage or conversion systems, e.g., lithium-ion batteries, can be enhanced by establishing methods of efficient lithium extraction from harsh brines. In this work, we describe a decoupled membrane-free electrochemical cell that cycles lithium ions between iron-phosphate electrodes and features cathode (brine) and anode (fresh water) compartments that are isolated from each other yet electrochemically connected through a pair of silver/silver-halide redox electrodes. This design is compatible with harsh brines having magnesium/lithium molar ratios of up to 3258 and lithium concentrations down to 0.15 millimolar, enabling the production of battery-grade (>99.95% pure) lithium carbonate. Energy savings of up to ~21.5% were realized by efficiently harvesting the osmotic energy of the brines. A pilot-scale cell with an electrode surface area of 33.75 square meters was used to realize lithium extraction from Dead Sea brine with a recovery rate of 84.0%.

Abstract:The supply and demand of lithium resources are seriously unbalanced due to the rapid growth of energy storage technologies designed to meet proposed carbon emission reduction targets. Lithium resources in the form of liquid solutions, such as seawater, salt-lake brine, and underground brine contribute greatly to this development due to their low cost and relatively abundant reserves. Electrochemical methods are particularly promising to extract lithium from solutions due to their excellent selectivity, environmental friendliness, and low energy consumption. From the perspective of fundamental research on new technologies, it is critical to maximize lithium extraction ability as well as potential applications. In this paper, operation modes of electrochemical lithium extraction processes as well as significant developments of key electrode materials are reviewed. Trends in routes for development are analyzed, and future research directions are correspondingly identified.

Abstract:With the rapid development of industry, the demand for lithium resources is increasing. Traditional methods such as precipitation usually take 1–2 years, and depend on weather conditions. In addition, electrochemical lithium recovery (ELR) as a green chemical method has attracted a great deal of attention. Herein, we summarize the systems of electrochemical lithium extraction and the electrode materials of the Li-ion battery from brine/seawater. Some representative work on electrochemical lithium extraction is then introduced. Finally, we prospect the future opportunities and challenges of electrochemical lithium extraction. In all, this review explores electrochemical lithium extraction from brine/seawater in depth, with special attention to the systems and electrode of electrochemical lithium extraction, which could provide a useful guidance for reasonable electrochemical-lithium-extraction.

Abstract:This review presents the global lithium supply, demand, and distribution, and explains the importance of saline lithium extraction. It compares several common methods for salt lake lithium extraction. The demand for lithium resources is growing rapidly due to the continuous development of the lithium‐ion battery, which plays an important part in the renewable energy industry. Global sources of lithium are ores and brine, of which 59% are distributed in saline brine. However, the significant lithium resources in saline brine have not been fully utilized. The electrochemical deintercalation method (EDM) for lithium extraction from saline brine is a promising technique because of its environmental friendliness, high selectivity, and cost‐effectiveness. Nevertheless, the application of EDM is greatly limited by the easy dissolution of electrode materials like LiMn2O4 and the cost of mass production. Also, there are a few existing review articles on the EDM for lithium extraction. To address this gap, this review provides a comprehensive overview of the current methods for lithium extraction from saline brine, systematically summarizes the technical status of the EDM, and pays special attention to the preparation method and modification of electrode materials. This review gives new insight into the mechanism of EDM and provides a new design strategy for the evaluation methods of EDM.

Abstract:With the rapid increase in lithium consumption for electric vehicle applications, its price soared during the past decade. To secure a reliable and cost-effective supply chain, it is critical to unlock alternative lithium extraction resources beyond conventional brine. In this study, we develop an electrochemical method to directly leach lithium from α-phase spodumene. We find the H2O2 promoter can significantly reduce the leaching potential by facilitating the electron transfer and changing the reaction path. Upon leaching, β-phase spodumene shows a typical phase transformation to HAlSi2O6, while leached α-phase remains its original crystal phase with a lattice shrinkage. To demonstrate the scale-up potential of electrochemical leaching, we design a catalyst-modified high-throughput current collector for high loading of suspended spodumene, achieving a leaching current of 18 mA and a leaching efficiency of 92.2%. Electrochemical leaching will revolutionize traditional leaching and recycling processes by minimizing the environmental footprint and energy consumption.
Solar-enhanced lithium extraction with self-sustaining water recycling from salt-lake brines.

Abstract:Lithium is an emerging strategic resource for modern energy transformation toward electrification and decarbonization. However, current mainstream direct lithium extraction technology via adsorption suffers from sluggish kinetics and intensive water usage, especially in arid/semiarid and cold salt-lake regions (natural land brines). Herein, an efficient proof-of-concept integrated solar microevaporator system is developed to realize synergetic solar-enhanced lithium recovery and water footprint management from hypersaline salt-lake brines. The 98% solar energy harvesting efficiency of the solar microevaporator system, elevating its local temperature, greatly promotes the endothermic Li+ extraction process and solar steam generation. Benefiting from the photothermal effect, enhanced water flux, and enriched local Li+ supply in nanoconfined space, a double-enhanced Li+ recovery capacity was delivered (increase from 12.4 to 28.7 mg g-1) under one sun, and adsorption kinetics rate (saturated within 6 h) also reached twice of that at 280 K (salt-lake temperature). Additionally, the self-assembly rotation feature endows the microevaporator system with distinct self-cleaning desalination ability, achieving near 100% water recovery from hypersaline brines for further self-sufficient Li+ elution. Outdoor comprehensive solar-powered experiment verified the feasibility of basically stable lithium recovery ability (>8 mg g-1) directly from natural hypersaline salt-lake brines with self-sustaining water recycling for Li+ elution (440 m3 water recovery per ton Li2CO3). This work offers an integrated solution for sustainable lithium recovery with near zero water/carbon consumption toward carbon neutrality.

Abstract:The demand for lithium has soared in recent years as the adoption of electric vehicles has grown rapidly, and lithium supply will need to grow another ~5x from current day to meet projected demand for lithium in 2030. To keep pace with this exponentially growing demand, novel methods of lithium sourcing are needed. Direct lithium extraction (DLE) from saltwater brines holds promise to unlock the lithium resources needed to power the electric vehicle revolution. Lithium is traditionally sourced via two methods. Open pit hard rock mining is the method which many are familiar with. In this method, rocks are excavated, roasted with sulfuric acid, and the eluent is processed to produce a pure lithium product. This is well known to be environmentally destructive, and it produces larges amounts of waste products. The second method employed to produce lithium chemicals is brine evaporation ponds. In this method, brine is pumped to a surface pond, often multiple acres across, and solar evaporation concentrates the lithium in the brine to the point that it can undergo further processing. This method is extremely land and water intensive, and local residents adjacent to such ponds are increasingly worried about the effects of such methods on local water tables. Electroflow employs a DLE process to convert brine directly into pure, battery grade lithium chemicals via a sustainable electrochemical process. Our electrochemical cell design enables extraction from dilute lithium brine resources with as low as 10 ppm Li, which unlocks huge swaths of new lithium resources across the globe, and specifically in North America. We use lithium-selective electrode materials as the basis for lithium separation from brine solutions, and this allows a new paradigm of DLE processes that have not yet been thoroughly studied. This talk will describe the operation of our technology and explore the impact that it could have at scale.
Electro-driven Direct Lithium Extraction from Geothermal Brines to Generate Battery-Grade Lithium Hydroxide

Abstract:As Li-ion batteries are increasingly being deployed in electric vehicles and grid-level energy storage, the demand for Li is growing rapidly. Extracting lithium from unconventional aqueous sources such as geothermal brines plays an important role in meeting this demand. Electrochemical intercalation offers high Li selectivity and avoids the use of harsh chemical regenerants, thus holding great promise in directly extracting lithium from unconventional sources. In this work, we design an integrated electrochemical process that achieves selective lithium extraction from geothermal brine, purification of lithium chloride, and conversion to lithium hydroxide. The lithium extraction process utilizes a lithium-intercalation electrode, LiFePO 4 (LFP), as the working electrode coupled with an activated carbon electrode as the counter electrode. A 91% purity LiCl is extracted from simulated Salton Sea geothermal brine containing 42 mM Li + , 3.1 M Na + (Li/Na molar ratio 1:74), 1070 mM Ca 2+ , and 540 mM K + , and a further purification step achieves a pure LiCl solution with no Na detected. Subsequently, lithium hydroxide is further produced through a bipolar membrane electrodialysis system and finally crystallized to obtain battery grade (> 99.5% purity) LiOH•H 2 O solid. We investigated the selectivity of lithium separation in solutions with different cation concentration ratios as well as in synthetic geothermal brines. We further conducted density-functional theory (DFT) calculations to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the high Li selectivity of olivine FePO 4 in aqueous solution. Finally, we conducted techno-economic assessments using a parametric model and estimated the levelized cost of produced LiOH•H 2 O (LCOL) as 4.1 $/kg LiOH•H 2 O, which is 6 times lower than the current market price. The results demonstrate the great potential of our technology for electro-driven, chemical-free lithium extraction from unconventional sources.
Solar-driven ultrafast lithium extraction from low-grade brine using microfluidics-mediated vortex in scalable electrochemical reactors

Abstract:Electrochemical lithium (Li) extraction from low-grade salt lake brine, when powered by off-grid renewables, represents a potential approach to meeting the substantially increasing demand for battery-grade Li2CO3. However, this technology has been drastically challenged by the low extraction rate and high production cost, largely due to the lack of research on reactor engineering and system scale-out. Herein, we rationally designed a scalable spiral-microstructured electrochemical reactor (SMER) to accomplish ultrafast and economical Li extraction under harsh brine conditions by virtue of significantly accelerated mass transfer. We showcased that the SMER was stably operated at a Li extraction rate over 5.6 times as much as that of state-of-art devices, and could be up-scaled for commercial production of battery-grade Li2CO3 driven by solar cells. This work lays the ground for sustainable Li extraction from remote low-grade salt lake brine and can be readily applied to more minable Li reserves/resources.

Abstract:Lithium is known as the "white petroleum" of the electrification era, and the global demand for lithium grows rapidly with the quick development of new energy industry. The aqueous solutions, such as salt lake brine, underground brine, and seawater, have large lithium reserves, thus this kind of lithium resource has become a research hotspot recently. Compared with other lithium extraction technologies, electro-sorption method shows good prospects for practical applications with advantages in the aspects of efficiency, recovery ratio, cost, and environment. Herein, this review covers recent progress on electro-sorption technology for lithium recovery from aqueous solutions, including the concept illustration, research progress of the applied working electrodes and counter electrodes, and the evaluation indicators of electro-sorption system. Meanwhile, some prospects for the development of this technology are also proposed. We hope this review is beneficial for the construction of high-efficient electrochemical lithium recovery system to achieve an adequate lithium supply in the future.

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries are ubiquitous as energy storage technology in mobile electronics and hybrid electric vehicles. There is a necessity to develop new lithium extraction technologies to meet growing demand and diversify the global lithium supply chain. Electrochemical recovery is a promising method of Li + extraction that is highly lithium selective, environmentally friendly and economical. In this work, the hydrophilicity of ZnO-coated LiMn 2 O 4 (derived from regenerated lithium-ion battery cathode materials, rLMO) is modulated to construct electrochemical systems for the recovery of lithium from brine. The effects of current density, potential, the concentration of simulated brine, and the concentration of recovery solution on lithium extraction from the simulated brine are investigated via the response surface methodology-central composites design. The structure and morphology of the materials during lithium extraction were studied using SEM, TEM, XRD and Raman, and the electrochemical lithium extraction performance was investigated by cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic and constant voltage. rLMO with Li vacancies has the dual functions of selective lithium extraction and ZnO coating to adjust the interface hydrophilicity, which can effectively improve the electrochemical performance. The average electro-adsorption capacity of the ZnO-modulate rLMO was 13.12 mg/g/cycle over five cycles. In the high-concentration feed solution (240 mM), the maximum adsorption capacity was 41.06 mg/g.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) is one of the critical industrial materials and an indispensable component in manufacturing Li-ion/Li batteries. However, Li resource is very limited and geographically uneven in earth’s crust and its mining is not sustainable due to the low efficiency and complicated separation and refining processes. Hence, direct Li recovery (from brines, seawater or used cells) and utilization are desired. Here, we report a novel technology to recover Li from low concentration solutions into a form of Li resource, which can be directly used for commercial battery materials production by fully eliminating the costly Li separation steps. By using both Li-ion selective membrane and low-cost Li host structural material, highly selective Li extraction was realized. Li-ion cathodes (e.g., spinel LiMn2O 4 and layered LiNix MnyCozO2) were synthesized with the extracted Li and have high phase purities and economic superiorities (e.g., $12.8 kg-1 for LiMn2O4) over other Li extraction methods and even commercial cathodes ($15 kg-1 for LiMn2O4). This contribution provides a potential technical pathway to overcome the challenges of both Li supply and battery cost for future electrification and decarbonization of socioeconomic system.
Pulsed electric field controlled lithium extraction process by LMO/MXene composite electrode from brines

Abstract:Low-cost and highly efficient extraction of lithium from brine is the key to solving energy and environmental problems for sustainable development. The electrochemical lithium extraction method is of high selectivity, low energy consumption and environmental friendly. In this work, two innovations were proposed for electrochemical lithium extraction technology. Firstly, the layered Ti3C2-MXene was combined with a LiMn2O4 (LMO) electrode to reduce the damage to the LMO crystal structure caused by manganese dissolution and the Jahn-Teller effect, and to greatly improve the lithium-ion transport rate and the cyclic stability of the electrode material. The good cyclic stability and high capacity were verified by XRD, SEM, and electrochemical tests before and after cycling. Secondly, the influence of four electric field controlling modes, namely constant current (CC) mode, pulse-rest(P10r2 and P10r10), pulse-rest-reverse pulse(P12r2R2), on the selectivity of lithium extraction was studied in simulated brine with an initial lithium/sodium ratio as low as 0.01. The results show that the Pulse Electric Field controlling method can effectively improve the lithium/sodium separation coefficient. Finally, an actual lithium extraction test was carried out in Atacama salt Lake brine with an initial Li/Na ratio of about 0.06. The Li/Na separation coefficient reached 1020 under the optimized electrode material structure and electric field mode. In conclusion, the application of LMO/MXene electrode under the pulse electric field mode is a highly selective method for lithium extraction with low initial lithium/sodium ratios.

Abstract:Due to the abundant reserves and increasing demand, the extraction and separation of lithium from salt-lake brines have attracted great interest worldwide. This review aims to summarize the major developments in lithium recovery from brines, starting from an overview of lithium demand and consumption, available resources and processing methods, and challenges of processing brines, followed with the advancements in solvent extraction, ion-sieve adsorption, electrochemical approaches, and membrane technology, successively. The paper focuses on the principles, mechanisms, operations, and comparison of the various approaches. Other promising techniques, such as the modification of ion-sieves, rocking-chair batteries, and liquid-membrane electrodialysis, also are discussed in the depth of mechanisms. These processes present excellent performance in the separation of Li+/Mg2+ or Li+/Na+. Finally, insights into the directions and prospects of lithium extraction from brines are presented. It can be concluded that only by integrating the advantages of various recent technologies will it be possible to develop an efficient, low cost, environmentally sustainable, and scalable process for lithium extraction from brines.

Abstract:The growing market demands for large-scale applications of lithium such as lithium-ion batteries increase the significance of its production. Land lithium resources are drastically decreasing; thus, lithium extraction from water lithium resources involving salt-lake brine and seawater has a growing tendency owing to its merits of low cost and abundant reserves. Lithium extraction from water lithium resources, especially those with high Mg/Li ratios, is challenging. Among all kinds of aqueous lithium-extraction methods, the electrochemical-battery approach is considered the most promising one as a result of its excellent lithium selectivity, high insertion capacity, low energy consumption, high reversibility, and ecofriendliness. The present work reviews the advantages and challenges of current electrochemical-battery systems involving lithium manganese oxide and lithium iron phosphate systems. The effects of several parameters and relevant mechanisms are discussed, including applied voltage, ionic concentration, pH, time, and coexisting ions. We stress that a combination of the electrochemicallithium-recovery process with a desalination process enables the highly efficient and economical extraction of lithium from low-concentration solutions. Currently available electrochemical batteries still suffer from problems of low stability and high cost of raw materials. Future research should focus on the enhancement in the battery-system stability, process optimization, and reduction of operating costs.

Abstract:Electrochemical extraction of lithium from solution is an urgently needed process because of the abundant reserves of lithium in seawater/brine and many disadvantages of the present technologies including high energy consumption, low separation efficiency, and being harmful to the environment. Competitive electrode materials used in electrochemical extraction require high cyclic stability in corrosive ion-rich seawater/brine. In this work, a three-dimensional (3D) nanostructured hybrid inorganic-gel framework electrode of polypyrrole/Al2O3 was introduced on the surface of LiMn2O4 for the first time. It was paired with activated carbon to construct an asymmetric lithium capacitor with advantages of cost effectiveness, good cycle stability in brine, high selectivity, and capacity. Furthermore, a flow control system was induced to make lithium extraction a continuous operation, which will be favored by the industry. The Li+ extraction energy consumption was 1.41 W h·mol–1 Li+ with a capacity of 1.85 mmol·g–1 in simulated brine. The capacity retention after 30 cycles was 91.66% at the 1 C rate. These promising results indicate that the PPy/Al2O3-modified LMO possesses high extraction efficiency and long-term stability in complex brine medium.

Highly Efficient Lithium Extraction from Brine with a High Sodium Content by Adsorption-Coupled Electrochemical Technology

Abstract:The demand for lithium resources continues to increase due to the rapid development of electronic vehicles, energy storage equipment, and other electronic products. Extracting lithium from salt lake brines is of great significance because of the predominance of brine lithium resources. Because both sodium and lithium ions are monovalent cations and have similar chemical properties, it is difficult to extract lithium from high-sodium brine. Herein, an adsorption-coupled electrochemical (ACEC) technology was utilized for lithium extraction. Manganese oxide coated with an ultrathin (1–2 nm) carbon layer ( MnOx@C), obtained by a precursor method, is utilized as a membrane electrode in a membrane capacitive device. The crystal structure and carbon layer thickness of MnOx@C are effectively controlled by adjusting the preparation conditions. When the core is mainly a MnO phase, the lithium extraction capability of the membrane electrode is significantly improved. The lithium adsorption capacity reaches as high as 51.8 mg/g, and the adsorption time is 550 s from high-sodium brine (Na/Li ratio = 48.6). The desorption rate of lithium ions is 91.3% during a reverse process. Compared with either membrane capacitance or adsorption methods, the adsorption capacity reached with this technology is in the lead. The synergy of adsorption and Faradaic redox reactions leads to remarkably enhanced lithium extraction capability.
