Abstract:Inspired by gradient materials in nature, the gradient design of electrodes is a simple and cost-effective solution to improve overall battery performance. This study proposes a simple and scalable dual-gradient carbon-silicon composite electrode based on traditional coating processes. By controlling the spatial distribution of graphite and silicon, as well as the porosity distribution throughout the electrode, mechanical degradation and electrochemical side reactions are mitigated. Meanwhile, an in-situ curvature testing system combining the chemomechanical model offers the quantitative analysis of stresses within the gradient electrodes. Compared to other electrodes, the prepared decreasing gradient silicon/carbon electrode (DG-Si/C) exhibits better cycling performance (94 cycles before reaching the theoretical capacity of graphite), with characterization analysis showing lower diffusion impedance (37.8 Omega). Mechanically, although the DG-Si/C composite electrode experiences higher compressive stress at the interface between the active layer and the current collector, it endures minimal stress overall. In particular, the compressive stress (similar to- 26 MPa) at the surface of the active layer is significantly reduced, thereby minimizing mechanical damage. The silicon-deficient outer layer in the DG-Si/C composite electrode offers robust support and effectively maintains structural stability, while the silicon-rich inner layer guarantees high capacity. This study provides the guideline for the structural optimization of composite electrodes in lithium-ion batteries.
