Abstract:We present a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor that enhances refractive index (RI) detection using a side-polished hollow core fiber (HCF) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). To excite SPR, we coat a 50-nm-thick gold film on the PDMS. To improve the testing sensitivity, we coat a 25-nm-thick layer of Ge 2 Sb 2 Te 5 (GST) onto the gold film substrate. The effective dielectric constant of the double-layer metal is increased and causes a redshift of the resonance wavelength. Compared to silicon-based waveguides, PDMS has lower RI, which helps to improve detection capability for low RI ranges. Experimental results indicate that when the environmental RI changes from 1.333 to 1.373, the sensor achieves a sensitivity of 10758 nm/RIU. The proposed sensor shows a 622.6% increase in sensitivity compared to traditional side-polished MMF SPR sensors. Its high sensitivity to detect low RI liquids highlights its potential for applications in biosensing, physical quantity measurement, chemical analysis, and environmental monitoring. Finally, we demonstrate that the sensor has outstanding performance in salinity detection, with a sensitivity of 1.48 nm/‰.
