Abstract:Ethylene oxychlorination on CeO2 provides ethylene dichloride (EDC) and the desired vinyl chloride (VCM) in a single operation, in contrast to the traditional process that requires two separate units. The origin of this outstanding performance is unclear, and the mechanism has not been discussed in detail. In the present work, we combine density functional theory (DFT) with steady-state experiments and temporal analysis of products (TAP) to close this gap. The catalyst surface is found to contain CeOCl, while the bulk phase is CeO2, regardless of the starting materials CeCl3, CeOCl, or CeO2. Catalysis by different nanostructures highlights that the CeO2(111) surface is more active than the (100) surface due to the poisoning of the latter, while the selectivities are comparable. In any case, the degree of oxygen removal from CeO2 and the replenishment of the accordingly formed oxygen vacancies by Cl and its replenishment by Cl species lead to increased selectivity to chlorinated products and decreased selectivity to carbon oxides. DFT and TAP studies reveal that the most likely pathway of VCM formation takes place by a cascade reaction. First, EDC appears and then HCl is extracted in a concerted step to lead to VCM. Such steps are a key characteristic of ceria. Other paths leading to minor products such as 1,2-dichloroethene (DCE) are found possible by starting from VCM or EDC. CO is formed by combustion of chlorinated species, whereas CO2 can either stem from further oxidation of CO or directly from ethylene. In summary, our work points out a rich complex behavior of the chemistry of chlorinated compounds on the oxide surface, indicating that concerted steps and cascade reactions are possible for these materials.

Abstract:In the context of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) production, an oxychlorination catalyst that allows direct VCM formation from gas-derived ethane instead of expensive oil-derived ethene is intensively sought after. A wide range of stable ethane oxychlorination catalysts for this purpose have recently been reported, yet they mainly yield ethene, while VCM remains a minor by-product. Strikingly, the same catalysts are active in ethene oxychlorination, resulting in selective VCM formation under equivalent reaction conditions. This work reveals the origin of these diverging selectivity patterns by combining quantitative catalytic tests, temporal analysis of products (TAP), and density functional theory (DFT) on iron phosphate. Ethane oxychlorination is found to proceed sequentially through ethyl chloride (EtCl) dehydrochlorination to ethene, while ethene oxychlorination directly yields VCM without formation of the intermediate dichloroethane (EDC) on iron phosphate. Furthermore, by co-feeding ethane in ethene oxychlorination, we demonstrate that the alkane suppresses the formation of VCM in ethene oxychlorination. The reason for this VCM inhibition is found in the hydrocarbon competition for a combination of the active, free and chlorinated iron centers. As ethane activation exhibits half of the barrier of ethene activation, the presence of ethane leads to active site depletion, hindering VCM formation. These observations are extended by ethane co-feeding tests in ethene oxychlorination over a wide range of known oxychlorination catalysts (EuOCl, LaOCl, CeO2, and CuCl2-KCl-LaCl3/γ-Al2O3), and corresponding DFT calculations, indicating that the described phenomenon is material independent. The gathered molecular-level understanding explains the major hurdle of using ethane as feedstock for vinyl chloride production.

Abstract:Linear alpha-olefins are currently produced predominantly by the oligomerization of ethylene. Among the most promising catalysts, zirconium catalysts are largely studied due to its mild reaction condition and well-distributed products. In this article, aryloxy zirconium catalysts, Zr(OAr)(n)Cl4-n center dot mArOH, were synthesized via modifying the aryl ring structure. The influence of Zr/Phenol molar ratio and the free phenol content on ethylene oligomerization was studied. Among these catalytic systems, Zr(OPh)(3)Cl center dot mPhOH/TEA/EtAlCl2 was proved to be highly active with the activity up to 6.8x10(4) g/(mol Zr center dot h), while the product consisted of mainly alpha-olefins(C-4-C-24) without polymers. In addition, a suitable amount of free phenol was found to be responsible for stabilizing the active species. It was also found that increasing the ethylene pressure or altering the substituents on the benzene ring could result in the formation of a tandem catalytic system, in which the obtained alpha-olefins were then mostly converted into the corresponding Friedel-Crafts alkylated-toluene products.

Abstract:A bifunctional catalyst comprising CuCl2/Al2O3 and nitrogen‐doped carbon was developed for an efficient one‐pot ethylene oxychlorination process to produce vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) up to 76 % yield at 250 °C and under ambient pressure, which is higher than the conventional industrial two‐step process (≈50 %) in a single pass. In the second bed, active sites containing N‐functional groups on the metal‐free N‐doped carbon catalyzed both ethylene oxychlorination and ethylene dichloride (EDC) dehydrochlorination under the mild conditions. Benefitting from the bifunctionality of the N‐doped carbon, VCM formation was intensified by the surface Cl*‐looping of EDC dehydrochlorination and ethylene oxychlorination. Both reactions were enhanced by in situ consumption of surface Cl* by oxychlorination, in which Cl* was generated by EDC dehydrochlorination. This work offers a promising alternative pathway to VCM production via ethylene oxychlorination at mild conditions through a single pass reactor. Vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) is directly produced by a metal‐free nitrogen‐doped carbon catalyst in one step via the ethylene oxychlorination process at 250 °C. Ethylene oxychlorination and high‐temperature dehydrochlorination reactions are integrated into a single pass with remarkable conversion and selectivity. The efficient combination of tandem reactions produces a VCM yield as high as the current two‐step process, and under mild conditions.

Abstract:Selective coupling of C1 platform molecules to C2 olefins is a cornerstone for establishing a sustainable chemical industry based on non petroleum sources1-3. Vinyl chloride (C2H3Cl), one of top commodity petrochemicals, is commercially produced from coal or oil derived C2 hydrocarbon (acetylene and ethylene) feedstocks with a high carbon footprint4-6. Here, we report a vinyl chloride synthesis via selective oxidative coupling of methyl chloride. This is enabled by a solid catalyst, featuring tungstate sub nanoclusters embedded in a zirconia matrix, which effectively captures CH2Cl radicals homogeneously generated in CH3Cl oxy pyrolysis and selectively couples them into C2H3Cl. In situ synchrotron based vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass spectrometry provides direct experimental evidence of the homogeneous heterogeneous reaction mechanism. The process achieves methyl chloride conversion of 10 – 65% with a high vinyl chloride selectivity (60 – 75%) at a reaction temperature (600 – 750 °C), which is much lower than the traditional pyrolysis (> 850 °C). It also delivers a stable performance (at a vinyl chloride yield of ca. 30%) with no deactivation observed during a 50 hour test. Furthermore, combining with reaction of methanol and HCl to produce methyl chloride, we establish a methanol to vinyl chloride (MTV) route with the potential for significant reductions in climate change impact (24%) and cost (38%) compared to the state of the art ethylene based balanced process, allowing for the efficient utilization of cheaper and renewable C1 feedstocks.

Abstract:Novel LaOCl/LaCl3 catalysts have been discovered that enable the production of vinyl chloride monomer from ethane. An ethane-based process would result in both capital savings and raw materials savings when compared to the current most effective vinyl technology. These materials are unique in the world of chlorination/oxychlorination as the mechanism for chlorination over LaOCl/LaCl3 occurs on a catalyst without a redox metal center, unlike the conventional CuCl2 catalysts used for oxychlorination, where the Cu species are reducible. This report focuses on the engineering approaches taken and the challenges encountered in the scale-up of a fluidized bed reactor based on this catalyst technology. The objective is to highlight the application of chemical reaction engineering principles to an industrial reactor scale-up, with special attention to the unexpected and atypical challenges encountered in this development effort.

Abstract:A series of CeO2-ZrO2-CrOx mixed oxides with different Ce/Zr molar ratios were synthesized by co-precipitation method and tested for deep catalytic oxidation of 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE), as one of the typical chlorinated VOCs pollutants. The results show that the addition of proper amount of ZrO2 significantly improves the catalytic activity of CeO2-CrOx, and only very slight C2H3Cl is detected as the sole byproduct in the oxidation process, due to the relative concentration of oxygen vacancies and Cr6+ species on the catalysts being increased. Moreover, though aged at 700 degrees C for 4 h, the catalytic performances and the thermal stability of the aged CeO2-ZrO2-CrO5 catalysts can be maintained to a large extent, especially for the CZCr catalyst (atom molar ratio Ce:Zr:Cr = 2:2:1). It may be related to that smaller Zr and Cr ions are embedded into CeO2 lattice to form solid solution and thus the structure stability being maintained. Besides, the catalysts exhibit good durability for 1,2-dichloroethane oxidation during the long-term continuous test, whether in dry air or in the existence of water and non-chlorinated VOCs, indicating that the CeO2-ZrO2-CrOx catalysts deserve more attention and may be potential for industrial application. Abstract:The main lines of development in the technology of vinyl chloride in the midterm are considered. It is shown that the balanced process based on ethylene remains the main method of vinyl chloride production despite an increase in the fraction of vinyl chloride production from acetylene in China. Technological solutions that would favor the intensification of current technologies, especially at the stages of dichloroethane pyrolysis and the oxidative chlorination of ethylene, will play important role in the development of these processes. A possible method for the increase in the productivity of dichloroethane pyrolysis is the use of initiators that make it possible to increase the conversion of dichloroethane, decrease the temperature of the process, decrease power consumption, and increase the period of furnace operation without recovery. For the processes of oxidative chlorination of ethylene with the use of fluidized-bed catalysts, a low-active catalyst is recommended together with an increase in the process temperature to 250–260°C. This makes it possible to increase the real productivity of the catalyst and the overall stage by a factor of 1.8–2 because of intensified heat removal in the reactor without a decrease in the selectivity of the process.

Abstract:Using VO2+ as a spin probe, a new method to obtain microenvironmental information on supports was developed which can be used in the choice of supports for coordination catalysts. Utilizing the above method, NaY was chosen as second support component. A complex support catalyst VOCl3/MgCl2/NaY/Al(2)Et(3)Cl(3) was prepared and used in ethylene-propylene copolymerization. Higher polymerization activity was obtained with this catalytic system. Alternating the ratio of two kinds of supports, the composition and sequence structure of copolymers could be controlled, which showed that NaY participated in the active species, affected the insertion of monomer, and changed the composition and sequence structure of copolymers. Abstract:Developing economical and robust catalysts for the highly selective and stable destruction of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) is a great challenge. Here, hollow nanosphere-like VOx/CeO2 catalysts with different V/Ce molar ratios were fabricated and adopted for the destruction of1,2–dichloroethane (1,2–DCE). The V0.05Ce catalyst possessed superior catalytic activity, reaction selectivity, and chlorine resistance owing to a large number of oxygen vacancies, excellent low-temperature redox ability, and chemically adsorbed oxygen (O− and O2−) species mobility. Typical chlorinated byproducts (CHCl3, CCl4, C2HCl3, and C2H3Cl3) derived from the cleavage of C–Cl and C–C bonds of 1,2–DCE were detected, which could be effectively inhibited by the abundant acid sites and the strong interactions of VOx species with CeO2. The presence of water vapor benefited the activation and deep destruction of 1,2–DCE over V0.05Ce owing to the efficient removal of Cl species from the catalyst surface.

Abstract:Highlights • Co–Ce composite oxides were prepared by the pyrolysis of Ce deposited ZIF-67. • Remarkable activity improvement was obtained after the incorporation of cerium. • Cerium incorporation boosts the redox capacity and creats more surface active sites. • The morphological feature from ZIF-67 template plays a crucial role in the reaction. Transition metal oxides are regarded as an economical and efficient catalytic alternate for catalytic oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions. The morphological decoration and the incorporation of extrinsic metals were demonstrated to be effective strategies for achieving noticeable catalytic improvement. In this work, a novel Co–Ce composite oxides catalyst was obtained by the pyrolysis of ZIF-67 template with the impregnation of certain cerium cations (denoted as ZIF-CoCe). Compared with the reference Co–Ce composite oxides by the sol-gel (denoted as SG-CoCe) and physical mixing (denoted as MIX-CoCe) methods, ZIF-CoCe delivers significantly higher catalytic activity for vinyl chloride oxidation, which are demonstrated to be closely related with its superior redox capacity, more abundance of surface active Co 3+ sites and adsorbed active oxygen species from oxygen vacancies. In addition, the unique cage-like morphological feature of the Co-based catalysts derived from ZIF-67 template plays a crucial function in kinetically facilitating the mass transfer of catalytic reaction and promoting the catalytic VC oxidation activity. With regard to in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTs) analysis, enol and carboxylic acid species are identified to be the key organic intermediates during catalytic vinyl chloride oxidation. Abstract:Ethyl acetate is an important chemical, and ethanol dehydrogenative condensation with 95.6% atomic economy is a promising synthetic route. CuZrO-based catalysts are widely applied in this reaction; however, the effect of the ZrO2 crystal phase in the CuCeZrO catalyst upon reaction deserves to be explored further. Herein, the ZrO2 crystal phase in the CuCeZrO catalyst was regulated by controlling the calcination temperature, and a high temperature (≥600 °C) is conducive to the transformation of the tetragonal phase to the monoclinic phase. Additionally, monoclinic ZrO2 (m-ZrO2) with limited density of the strong base is found to be more beneficial to the selective production of ethyl acetate from ethanol, while tetragonal ZrO2 (t-ZrO2) with abundant strongly basic sites is more inclined to the formation of butanol and its downstream esters. This work not only improves our understanding of the crystal phase effect in a CuCeZrO catalytic system but also paves the way for the development of more efficient catalysts for ethyl acetate production.

Abstract:Ethyl acetate, as an important organic solvent, can be produced via ethanol dehydrogenation-condensation route with 96% atomic economy and environmental friendliness. Although CuZr-based catalysts have been widely used in this reaction, high ethyl acetate selectivity with satisfied ethanol conversion remains a great challenge. Herein, an efficient CuCeZr solid solution catalyst is developed and realize the selective synthesis of ethyl acetate from ethanol. The CuCeZr catalyst with 10 wt% Ce doping shows the highest selectivity (87.5%) and 55.9% ethanol conversion, which is superior to other reported CuZr-based catalysts. A 1000 h continuous life-test result indicates an excellent stability of CuCeZr catalyst. The characterization and reaction results suggest that the Ce doping enhanced the formation of Cu (I) species to improve the selectivity of ethyl acetate. Moreover, it decreases the amount of strong acid-base sites, which suppresses the self-condensation of acetaldehyde and dehydration process, reducing the production of C4 by-products.

Abstract:Ethylene oxychlorination is the key technology in vinyl chloride (VCM, the monomer of PVC, polyvinyl chloride) production to close the chlorine loop by consuming the HCl released from the former cracking step. Due to the high demand for PVC, this leads to ethylene oxychlorination being one of the most important processes in the industry. This Review covers an in-depth analysis of the dynamic nature of active sites for the main and side reactions involved in ethylene oxychlorination, featuring the findings and viewpoints from the dynamic kinetics study and analysis under industrial operating conditions. A unified picture of the mechanism of the surface reactions, and the effect of supports and promoters, has been presented based on the decoupled redox-cycle experiments, which leads to a significantly better understanding of the mechanism and provides valuable guidelines for effective catalyst design. Operando techniques and kinetic tools of the rate-diagram, as well as their application to the study of the redox-cycle in ethylene oxychlorination and kinetic models on both the main product and byproduct, are also reviewed. Abstract:Series of Mn-Zr composite oxides with variabe Mn/Zr compositions were prepared by a sol-gel route for catalytic oxidation of vinyl chloride (VC). The resultant catalysts exhibited notable diversity in the physicochemical properties and reaction activity, revealing the significant interaction effect of Mn-Zr comparable to the independent manganese or zircoinum oxide. The presence of Mn-Zr solid solution gave rise to better redox capacity, more plentiful surface acid sites and adsorbed oxygen species, and more abundant high-valance manganese cations (Mn4+ and Mn3+). These superiorities have been demonstrated to be the main origin for the activity enhancement in catalytic VC oxidation. Among all catalysts, Mn0.5Zr0.5 possessed the optimal catalytic activity and good catalytic durability, which makes it a prospective alternative for chlorinated VOCs abatement.

Abstract:In the production process of bioethanol, stripping is usually required to improve the production efficiency of ethanol, and the generated CO 2 fermentation gas direct emissions contribute to increased carbon. Herein, we prepared Zr x /(FeCe) catalyst by co-precipitation method to catalyze CO 2 and ethanol for production of diethyl carbonate (DEC). Compared with FeCe catalysts, the introduction of Zr significantly improved the acid-base active sites and the oxygen vacancies on the catalyst surface, resulted in higher activity and selectivity of the catalysts. The ratio of Zr:(FeCe) in the catalyst, reaction temperature, pressure and time were optimized, resulting a high DEC selectivity of 96.7% under the Zr 0.1 /(FeCe) catalyst. Finally, we used the fermentation tail gas as CO 2 source to react with ethanol for the formation of DEC, and obtained 56.0% selectivity of DEC. This study provides a new idea for the utilization of CO 2 fermentation gas and the development of cleaner fuel production process.
