Abstract:The need to decrease environmental pollution, reduce energy consumption and produce high-purity chemicals has become an increasingly important driving force for sulfur dioxide (SO2) capture. The efficient capture of low concentrations of SO2, a highly corrosive acid gas that is not typically present in high concentrations in industrial settings, is a major challenge. Herein, a novel phosphate-functionalized metal-organic framework, ZU-801, is designed with precisely controlled pore sizes and chemical environment to achieve excellent adsorption capacity for SO2 (1.44 mmol g-1 at 0.002 bar, 2.00 mmol g-1 at 0.01 bar) and high IAST selectivities for SO2/CO2 (145), which provides great potential for selective capture of SO2. ZU-801 shows excellent stability to air, water, SO2, strong acid and strong base solutions, and it is thermally stable up to 733 K. Additionally, ZU-801 exhibits outstanding separation ability in removing SO2 from SO2/CO2 mixtures at temperature as high as 383 K or in humid environments. This work demonstrates the potential of designing ion-functionalized ultramicroporous materials with tailored pore sizes and porous chemical environments for efficient capture and separation of SO2 and sheds light on designing stable high-performance materials that operate at high temperatures.

Abstract:AbstractIn the electronics industry, the efficient recovery and capture of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) from SF6/N2mixtures is of great importance. Herein, three metal–organic frameworks with fine‐tuning pore structures,Cu(peba)2,Ni(pba)2, andNi(ina)2, were designed for SF6capture. Among them,Ni(ina)2has perfect pore sizes (6 Å) that are comparable to the kinetic diameter of sulfur hexafluoride (5.2 Å), affording the benchmark binding affinity for SF6gas.Ni(ina)2exhibits the highest SF6/N2selectivity (375.1 at 298 K and 1 bar) and ultra‐high SF6uptake capacity (53.5 cm3 g−1at 298 K and 0.1 bar) at ambient conditions. The remarkable separation performance ofNi(ina)2was verified by dynamic breakthrough experiments. Theoretical calculations and the SF6‐loaded single‐crystal structure provided critical insight into the adsorption/separation mechanism. This porous coordination network has the potential to be used in industrial applications.
Microporous covalent organic frameworks for sulfur hexafluoride capture and separation

Abstract:Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is the most potent greenhouse gas whose emission is in great need of reducing during the indus-trial processes. Here, a variety of covalent organic frameworks with varying topologies, surface areas, pore size distribu-tions is designed and synthesized for systematically studying structure-property relationships of COF-based SF6 adsor-bents. Surface area was found to be a prerequisite for achieving high SF6 uptakes, and small pore size at ca. 0.9 nm could effectively enhance the adsorbate-adsorbent interaction and hence the SF6/N2 selectivity. With a large specific surface area and a suitable pore size, RCOF-1 showed superior SF6 adsorption capacities up to 4.13 mmol g-1 and large SF6/N2 se-lectivity up to 125 (273 K, 100 kPa), which can be considered one of the most high-performance porous materials for SF6 capture and separation. This work not only provides a series of high-performance SF6 adsorbents, but also broadens the horizon of applications of the emerging COFs, pointing out their development direction in the field of SF6 capture and separation.

Abstract:Sulfur hexafluoride (SF 6 ) has established itself as an invaluable industrial gas, but its remarkable stability in the atmosphere (ca. 3200 years), coupled with its potent greenhouse gas characteristics, necessitates effective strategies to eliminate post-use emissions. Various approaches have been explored, including destructive pathways aimed at depleting emitted SF 6 , which, unfortunately, prevent recycling the gas. In this review, we particularly focus on emerging porous solids including, metal organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and porous cages for selectively capturing and separating SF 6 . These materials have regular pore size distributions, large surface areas, and large gas adsorption capacities and selectivities due to their unique pore environments, which are influenced by metal types, organic linkers, and their combinations. This comprehensive review explores the latest studies on MOFs and newly initiated studies on COFs and porous cages undertaken to selectively and non-destructively remove SF 6 from mixed gases with focus on their pore environments and adsorption performances.

Abstract:Carbon peaking and carbon neutralization trigger a technical revolution in energy & environment related fields. Development of new technologies for green energy production and storage, industrial energy saving and efficiency reinforcement, carbon capture, and pollutant gas treatment is in highly imperious demand. The emerging porous framework materials such as metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), owing to the permanent porosity, tremendous specific surface area, designable structure and customizable functionality, have shown great potential in major energy-consuming industrial processes, including sustainable energy gas catalytic conversion, energy-efficient industrial gas separation and storage. Herein, this manuscript presents a systematic review of porous framework materials for global and comprehensive energy & environment related applications, from a macroscopic and application perspective.
Aluminum-based Metal Organic Frameworks for Greenhouse Gases CF4 and C2F6 Capture with Excellent Capacity and Selectivity

Abstract:The capture and recovery of perfluorinated greenhouse gases CF4 and C2F6 from industrial exaust can not only mitigate global warming but also produce value-added products. Adsorption technology based on porous materials is promising for such purpose, while adsorbents with high capacity and selectivity are still lacking due to the chemical inertness of CF4 and C2F6. Herein, three ultra-microporous Al-MOFs with multiple electropositive binding sites in 1D channel were synthesized and evaluated for CF4/C2F6 adsorption. Among the synthesized Al-MOFs, Al-Fum displayed the best adsorption performance due to its desirable pore environment. It has a record-breaking C2F6 adsorption capacity (3.30 mmol/g at 1 bar and 298 K) and C2F6/N2 (10/90, v/v) selectivity (299.6 at 1 bar). In addition, it also displays excellent CF4 adsorption performance, exceeding most of the reported adsorbents. Theoretical simulations demonstrate the high CF4/C2F6 affinity towards Al-Fum is resulted from the multiple interactions of F atoms with H atoms of fumarate linkers and corner hydroxyl groups in frameworks. Moreover, dynamic column breakthrough tests confirmed the excellent separation performance of CF4/N2 and C2F6/N2 on Al-Fum with outstanding regenerability. Due to the green and energy-efficient synthesis method and outstanding adsorption performance, Al-Fum is considered to be an ideal porous material for CF4/C2F6 capture under practical conditions.

Abstract:The capture and separation of the greenhouse gas sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) from nitrogen (N2) holds significant potential for mitigating the greenhouse effect and yielding economic advantages for the semiconductor industry. In this study, a pair of isoreticular cost-effective and stable metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with slightly different pore environments (CAU-10-H and CAU-10-Py) were prepared at >10 g scale for SF6/N2 separation. CAU-10-Py exhibited a remarkable improvement in SF6 uptake capacity at both low pressure (1.13 mmol/g at 0.1 bar and 298 K, compared to 0.68 mmol/g) and elevated pressure (2.11 mmol/g at 1 bar and 278 K, compared to 1.07 mmol/g). The ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) selectivity of SF6/N2 (10/90) was found to be 204 for CAU-10-Py and 123 for CAU-10-H. These enhanced capacities and selectivity endow CAU-10-Py a highly promising candidate for SF6 capture. Single crystal structural analysis, 77 K N2 adsorption data and theoretical calculations indicated that the substitution of benzene by pyridine slightly expand the pore diameter, facilitating more efficient accommodation of SF6 within the channel pores. The SF6 molecule is adsorbed around four benzene rings in CAU-10-H but trapped by two pyridine rings in CAU-10-py, resulting in one fold increase in adsorption capacity. Intriguingly, time-dependant adsorption experiments revealed that CAU-10-Py exhibited a higher SF6 adsorption rate and a lower N2 adsorption rate compared to CAU-10-H, further highlighting the benefit of CAU-10-Py for SF6/N2 separation. Dynamic breakthrough experiments conducted under simulated working conditions further confirmed the outstanding SF6/N2 separation performance of CAU-10-Py. Considering its excellent regeneration ability and cycling performance, this cost-effective and easily scalable MOF demonstrates great promise for SF6/N2 separation.

Abstract:Removal of low concentration sulfur dioxide (SO2) from gas mixture is of great significance in gas purification, but the selective recognition of SO2 from carbon dioxide (CO2) still remains a great challenge with low separation selectivity. Herein, we reported a highly-stable pillared-layer ultramicroporous material CPL-1-NH2 for efficient separation of SO2 and CO2 with benchmark IAST selectivity (485) in metal organic frameworks (MOFs). The high separation selectivity is attributed to the narrow channel with lined amino groups, which exhibits significantly higher affinity to SO2 than CO2. Even in the presence of CO2 and trace moisture, the dynamic SO2 capture performance is hardly affected, demonstrating its great promise for SO2 capture. Simulation studies were conducted to gain the deep insight into the microscopic adsorption behaviors of SO2 and CO2.

Abstract:Reducing the anthropogenic emission of electron specialty gases (F-gases, e.g., NF3, CF4 and SF6) in semiconductor industry is vital due to the strong greenhouse effect of F-gases. Herein, a microporous metal-organic framework (SBMOF-1) has proved effective for F-gases trapping owing to the enhanced dispersion force in ultramicropores. The 5-8.5 angstrom pocket-like pore offers overlapped intermolecular interactions in SBMOF-1 for trapping F-gases. Outstanding F-gases/N-2 IAST selectivity and time-dependent adsorption tests confirmed the adsorptive separation performance of SBMOF-1. Moreover, breakthrough experiments also manifest the practical potential of SBMOF-1 for capturing F-gases from semiconductor etching exhaust.

Abstract:Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is an extremely severe greenhouse gas. It is an urgently important mission to find excellent candidates for selective adsorption of SF6, in order to reduce the emission of SF6 facilities. Here, we adopt the molecular simulation method to systematically explore the selective adsorption of SF6 in 22 kinds of representative covalent-and metal–organic frameworks. Results indicate that COF-6 is a promising candidate for the SF6 adsorption at low pressure P < 20 kPa because of its small pore size, while MOF-180 and PAF-302 are excellent candidates at high pressure P = 2 × 103 kPa due to their large Brunauer-Emmett-Teller specific surface area (BET-SSA) and pore volumes. For the two cases of the power industry ( X SF 6 =0.1) and the semiconductor industry ( X SF 6 =0.002) environments, COF-6 and ZIF-8 are fairly promising candidates for selective adsorption of SF6 from the SF6/N2 mixtures, because they not only present the high selectivity, but also the large adsorption capacity at ambient environment, which can be considered as potential adsorbents for selective adsorption of SF6 at ambient conditions.

Abstract:Effective capture and separation of the greenhouse gas SF6 from N2 is extremely important to attenuate the greenhouse effect and bring economic benefits to the semiconductor industry. Herein, a highly stable “pillar-layer” MOF (YTU-30) with multiple π-π stacking aromatic rings as pillar in the pores was prepared by mixed ligand strategy. Static equilibrium isothermal adsorption results display that YTU-30 possesses a high SF6 uptake capacity (68.6 cm3 cm−3), while nearly negligible N2 adsorption (3.3 cm3 cm−3) at 298 K and 1 bar. The substance ratio of SF6-to-N2 uptake reached 20.8. Dynamic breakthrough experiments also demonstrate that YTU-30 can achieve the effective separation of SF6/N2 (10/90) mixture. Cycling experiments of static and dynamic were unchanged with a very simple process, which further confirmed the feasibility and directly capture SF6 and separate the SF6/N2 mixture for YTU-30. The dense aryl rings with π-π stacking in the pores not only increases the stability of MOF, but also contributes to its high SF6 adsorption. These results provide a new strategy to achieve the construction of a stable MOF for the separation SF6/N2 gas mixture.

Abstract:Efficient capture of greenhouse gases (SF6 and CO2) is crucial for addressing global climate issues and is highly challenging. Reasonably designing MOFs with expected functions based on pore engineering can help solve the problem. In the present work, a trinuclear cluster based In(III)-MOF (HBU-21) was designed and synthesized, which shows a three-dimensional (3D) network. The BET specific surface area reaches 381.44 m2⋅g-1. Importantly, the appropriate pore size (6.14 Å) is very suitable for selective capture of SF6 from SF6/N2 mixture. The higher IAST selectivity was obtained (SF6/N2, v/v 10:90, 184.05; 1:99, 88.87). In addition, HBU-21 also shows high uptakes of C2H2 and CO2, the capacities achieve 45.21 cm3⋅g−1 and 24.36 cm3⋅g−1 at 298 K 100 kPa, respectively. Theoretical simulations results indicate that the open metal site (OMS) should be responsible for the different adsorption behavior. To further validate its potential application value, recycling experiments were further implemented. The maximum adsorption capacity of SF6 remains basically unchanged after three rounds of adsorption and desorption tests. The results provide certain reference for rational designing MOFs based on pore engineering.

Abstract:Capturing and separating the greenhouse gas SF6 from nitrogen N2 have significant greenhouse mitigation potential and economic benefits. We used a pore engineering strategy to manipulate the pore environment of the metal-organic framework (MOF) by incorporating organic functional groups (-NH2). This resulted in an enhanced adsorption of SF6 and separation of the SF6/N2 mixture in the MOF. The introduction of amino (-NH2) groups into YTU-29 resulted in a reduction of the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface but an increase in interactions with SF6 within the confined pores. Water-stable YTU-29-NH2 showed a significantly higher SF6 uptake (95.5 cm3/g) than YTU-29 (77.4 cm3/g). The results of the breakthrough experiments show that YTU-29-NH2 has a significantly improved separation performance for SF6/N2 mixtures, with a high SF6 capture of 0.88 mmol/g compared to 0.56 mmol/g by YTU-29. This improvement is due to the suitable pore confinement and accessible -NH2 groups on pore surfaces. Considering its excellent regeneration ability and cycling performance, ultrastable YTU-29-NH2 demonstrates great potential for SF6 capturing and SF6/N2 separation.
From pore to process: ultra-efficient SF6/N2 continuous separation using inexpensive robust MOF composites

Abstract:Physisorption presents a promising alternative to cryogenic distillation for capturing the most potent greenhouse gas, SF6, but existing adsorbents face challenges in meeting diverse chemical and engineering concerns. Herein, with insights into in-pore chemistry and industrial process design, we report a systematic investigation that constructed two novel low-cost composites pellets (Al(fum)@2%HPC and Al(fum)@5%Kaolin) coupled with an innovative two-stage Vacuum Temperature Swing Adsorption (VTSA) process for the ultra-efficient recovery of low-concentration SF6 from N2. Record-high selectivities (> 2×104) and SF6 dynamic capacities (~2.7 mmol/g) were achieved, while exceptional SF6 productivities (~58.7 L/kg), yields (~96.8%), and recyclability (~1000 cycles) were demonstrated in fixed-bed adsorption-desorption experiments under mild regeneration conditions. 2D solid-state NMR/in-situ FTIR, DFT-D binding/diffusion simulation analyses revealed the multi-site binding mode and the ultra-fast diffusion of SF6 within the channels. The proposed VTSA processes successfully met the dual stringent requirements of both environmental protection and electricity equipment operation: the SF6 recovery of 99.91% accompanied with a SF6 purity/working capacity of 99.91%/2.1 mmol/g, which significantly outperformed the industrial employed adsorbent zeolite 13X and showed only 19% the energy consumption of the cryogenic distillation.

Abstract:Pursuing best-performing porous adsorbents to realize an effective SF6 recovery from SF6/N2 blends is of pronounced industrial worth. To tackle this key obstacle, we propose a single-molecule SF6 trap, which is based upon a splint-like pore in a highly stable metal–organic framework Ni(adc)(dabco)0.5 through multipoint F···π affinity. The pore walls are decorated with oppositely parallel anthracene rings, and the overlapping region of anthracene rings forms a giant overlap of potential fields. This very strong SF6 trap presents a record initial isosteric heat of adsorption (47.6 kJ mol–1), Henry constant (285.0 mmol g–1 bar–1), and uptake (2.23 mmol g–1) for SF6, making it a new benchmark with an unexampled ideal selectivity (919.4) toward SF6 capture. The SF6 adsorption mechanism within the Ni(adc)(dabco)0.5-based single-molecule trap is identified via in situ powder X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared reflection spectroscopy in conjunction with theoretical studies. The highest selectivity (948.2), SF6 breakthrough uptake (2.1 mmol g–1), and dimensionless time (481.6) with the breakthrough effect of complete separation further consolidated that this MOF-based single-molecule SF6 trap is a novel state-of-the-art candidate toward SF6/N2 separation.

Abstract:Direct air capture is regarded as a plausible alternate approach that, if economically practical, can mitigate the increasing carbon dioxide emissions associated with two of the main carbon polluting sources, namely stationary power plants and transportation. Here we show that metal-organic framework crystal chemistry permits the construction of an isostructural metal-organic framework (SIFSIX-3-Cu) based on pyrazine/copper(II) two-dimensional periodic 4(4) square grids pillared by silicon hexafluoride anions and thus allows further contraction of the pore system to 3.5 versus 3.84 Å for the parent zinc(II) derivative. This enhances the adsorption energetics and subsequently displays carbon dioxide uptake and selectivity at very low partial pressures relevant to air capture and trace carbon dioxide removal. The resultant SIFSIX-3-Cu exhibits uniformly distributed adsorption energetics and offers enhanced carbon dioxide physical adsorption properties, uptake and selectivity in highly diluted gas streams, a performance, to the best of our knowledge, unachievable with other classes of porous materials.

Abstract:The governance of sulfur dioxide emissions in the atmosphere is a global challenge. Herein, a three-dimensional ultramicroporous porous organic framework named TAM-POF with high surface areas, abundant accessible N sites and suitable pore size was synthesized for elimination of SO2 in flue gases and aromatic sulfides in liquid fuels. The adsorption and separation performance of TAM-POF is investigated by equilibrium gas adsorption, instant adsorption rates and column breakthrough experiments. A record-high SO2 dynamic adsorption capacity of 2.92 mmol g−1 in ternary gas mixture (0.5/10/89.5, v/v/v, SO2/CO2/N2) and SO2/CO2 (1 2 4) and 3-methylthiophene/n-octane (42) selectivities were achieved in TAM-POF. The strong interaction between adsorbents and TAM-POF, as well as appropriate pore apertures are the main reason for their excellent desulfurization performance, which are also evidenced by theory simulation.
