Abstract:In this study, the Reynolds number sensitivity on the aerostatic characteristics around a fixed long-span railcum-road bridge girder with three separated boxes is investigated using 3D large eddy simulation (LES). Based on the overall center height H of the bridge, the range of Reynolds number investigated is 1e2 <= Re <= 2.8e4. Through the surface pressure distribution and the dominant frequency distribution of the pressure fluctuations, the aerostatic characteristic of the separated three-box girder is found to exhibit significant Reynolds number sensitivity. The LES simulation results indicate that the separation-reattachment scenario of the surface flow and the collision of gap vortices are responsible for the aerostatic instability of the three-box girder. In addition, at high Reynolds numbers, ' dual-frequency ' or even ' multi-frequency ' phenomena are observed on the threebox girder surface. The non-Gaussian characteristic points are identified to reflect the unsteady effects of the flow field, occurring at different regions on the three-box girder surface depending on different Reynolds numbers. Finally, by analyzing the spatial correlation between some typical monitoring points and the total circumferential monitoring points, we further confirm the existence of different unsteady effects in the flow field, i.e. the flow separation and the vortex collision, on the pressure fluctuations in local regions of the three-box girder surface. The spatial correlation of the box girder surfaces at both sides of the gap indicates that the unsteady effect of the gap flow field is primarily caused by the upward movement of the gap vortices acting on the box girder surfaces with the increasing Reynolds number.
