Why feed more doctors into the specialty training bottleneck?

Abstract:Waters reports that the planned expansion of medical training places risks causing the medical education system to collapse.1As specialty training competitions ratios continue climbing,2 I find myself in a growing, disparate band of doctors who didn't secure a training post. United only in circumstance, we may be unseen in the workplace and shy to share our failure.I seek regular NHS work and the security it brings. Locum and fixed term posts might be preferable for some, but their insecurity deems them a last resort for others, and early career doctors aren't eligible for specialist, associate specialist, and specialty doctors (SAS) contracts. I would not naively expect to walk into training of my choice, but after nine years of learning my trade in university and work, it does not feel unreasonable to seek ongoing employment that will pay regular bills and provide sick pay.
