Abstract:Catalysts can significantly promote the reaction dynamics and are therefore considered crucial components for achieving high electrochemical energy conversion efficiency. However, the active sites of the catalysts, particularly for nano-level and atomic-level catalysts commonly undergo reconstruction under practical applications. Therefore, obtaining an in-depth and systematic understanding on the real active sites through in situ/operando characterization techniques is a prerequisite for establishing the structure-performance relationship and guiding the future design of more efficient electrocatalysts. Herein, we summarize the recent progress of in situ/operando characterization techniques for identifying the nature of active sites of electrocatalysts when used in electrocatalytic energy conversion reaction. Specifically, our focus lies in the fundamental principles of various in situ/operando characterization techniques, with particular emphasis on their applications for electrocatalytic reactions. Beyond that, the challenges and perspective insights are also added in the final section to highlight the future direction of this important field.

Abstract:Renewable energy and sustainable development have attracted considerable attention due to the rapid growth of energy consumption and environmental pollution. The further development of electrocatalytic water splitting can promote the development and application of next‐generation sustainable energy systems. However, the lack of an in‐depth understanding of the dynamic restructuring process occurring on the catalyst surface in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has limited the further development and improvement of OER‐related theories. Therefore, real‐time monitoring and analysis of the dynamic surface reconstruction process has a great significance for deeply understanding the intrinsic catalytic mechanism of OER. Herein, the latest progress on the in situ methods for characterizing the surface reconstruction of various transition metal‐based OER electrocatalysts in recent years is summarized. Many commonly methods used in situ characterization techniques have been reviewed to reveal the correlation between structure, surface reconstruction, and intrinsic activity.

Abstract:Electrocatalysis is critical in improving the energy conversion efficiency, decreasing carbon emissions, and promoting the development of the green energy industry. A deep understanding of the electrocatalytic processes at nanostructured electrochemical interfaces（electrodes） is required to elucidate the electrocatalytic mechanism and facilitate the rational design of electrocatalysts. Electrocatalytic surfaces, which are structurally and compositionally heterogeneous, are usually analyzed using classical macroscopic electrochemical methods that lack the high spatial resolution and temporal sensitivity required for localized electrochemical measurements. In this regard, advances in electrochemical scanning probe microscopy, including electrochemical scanning tunneling, electrochemical atomic force, scanning electrochemical, and scanning electrochemical cell microscopies, offer significant opportunities to study electrocatalytic phenomena at nanometer and ultimately atomic scales during the reaction process. In this review, we first introduce the basic principles, features, and advantages and disadvantages of each technique of these scanning probe microscopies and outline the key advancements of each technique, particularly in investigating electrocatalysis. Subsequently, hybrid techniques of probe microscopy with synergistic effects are introduced. Then, we summarize the recent progress in the application of in-situ characterization methods in electrocatalysis, including hydrogen evolution/oxidation, oxygen evolution, and CO2 reduction reactions, focusing on the structure-activity correlation, structure evolution/stability, adsorption of the reactants or intermediates, preferred reaction pathways, and selectivity. Finally, the challenges and future developments of in-situ scanning probe microscopy in electrocatalysis are discussed.

Abstract:Investigation of electrocatalytic reactions and processes at molecule level is of essential importance in the successful development of electrocatalyst. It is critical to understand the detail pathways and mechanism of complex electrocatalytic processes in order to control the reaction and suppress the formation of byproducts. Based on its fingerprint and surface selection rules, electrochemical in-situ FTIR spectroscopy (in-situ FTIRS) is a powerful method to acquire real-time information about the chemical nature of adsorbates and the solution species involved in electrochemical reactions. These unique features make this technique well-suitable and widely applicable in electrocatalytic reactions.In this paper, we review recent progresses of in-situ FTIRS and its application in the investigation of electrocatalytic reactions and processes. First, we focus on the in-situ FTIR studies of electrocatalytic oxidation of small organic molecules. Next, in-situ FTIR characterization of electrocatalysts through employing a probe molecule, i.e. CO, is reviewed. Finally, the application of in-situ FTIRS to analyze some important electrochemical processes such as CO2 electroreduction, biomolecule reaction and Lithium ion battery is reviewed. The body of work has advanced the knowledge of electrode process and summarized the frontier in study of electrocatalytic reactions and processes at molecular level. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Pulsed electrocatalysis has emerged as a promising technology to effectively improve reaction kinetics and tailor product selectivity. While most research focuses on the evolution of electrocatalyst active sites, the dynamic response of the interfacial microenvironment during pulsed electrocatalysis still remains unknown. Here, we reveal the in situ dynamic regulation of the interfacial microenvironment induced by pulsed electrocatalysis in the oxygen reduction reaction process, from the interface reactant delivery to intermediate formation dynamics. At the diffusion layer, the coupling of pulsed electrocatalysis and hierarchical pore structure was proven to break the limitation of proton transfer, resulting in favorable H2O2 production kinetics. At the electrode/electrolyte interface, the pulsed electric field would stimulate the cation effect to activate C–*OOH and reduced the reaction energy barrier, giving rise to more favorable *OOH formation thermodynamics. This work provides new insights into exploring in situ regulation of the interfacial microenvironment, which is expected to be extended to different electrochemical processes.

Abstract:Gas-involved electrochemical reactions provide feasible solutions to the worldwide energy crisis and environmental pollution. It has been recognized that various elements of the reaction system, including catalysts, intermediates, and products, will undergo real-time variations during the reaction process, which are of significant meaning to the in-depth understanding of reaction mechanisms, material structure, and active sites. As judicious tools for real-time monitoring of the changes in these complex elements, in situ techniques have been exposed to the spotlight in recent years. This review aims to highlight significant progress of various advanced in situ characterization techniques, such as in situ X-ray based technologies, in situ spectrum technologies, and in situ scanning probe technologies, that enhance our understanding of heterogeneous electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction reaction, nitrogen reduction reaction, and hydrogen evolution reaction. We provide a summary of recent advances in the development and applications of these in situ characterization techniques, from the working principle and detection modes to detailed applications in different reactions, along with key questions that need to be addressed. Finally, in view of the unique application and limitation of different in situ characterization techniques, we conclude by putting forward some insights and perspectives on the development direction and emerging combinations in the future.

Abstract:The water-splitting reaction, including the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, as well as the electrochemical oxygen and CO2 reduction reactions offer promising solutions to address the global energy scarcity and the associated environmental issues. However, the lack of deep insight into the reaction mechanisms and clear identification of the catalytic active sites hinder any breakthrough for the development of efficient electrocatalysts with high performance and durability. Operando characterization techniques allowing in situ monitoring the surface oxidation state and local atomic-structure transformation are capable of probing the active sites and promoting the fundamental understanding of the reaction mechanism in these systems. Herein, the recent applications of various operando characterization techniques in identifying the active sites and capturing the geometric structure, oxidation state, and local atomic-structure evolution of the catalysts during water electrolysis and O-2/CO2 electroreduction are thoroughly summarized. The challenges and outlook in developing operando techniques to further extend the understanding of the underlying mechanism during electrochemical energy-conversion reactions are discussed.

Abstract:It has been widely acknowledged that most electrocatalysts would undergo a structural reconstruction during the water splitting as well as carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction reactions. Recently developed in situ and/or operando methods are gaining increasing interest as judicious tools for investigations of heterogeneous electrocatalysis. In this Perspective, recent applications of various in situ characterization techniques in tracking the structural reconstruction of the catalysts, identifying real active sites, and recording intermediates formed during water electrolysis and CO2 reduction reaction are thoroughly summarized. Finally, on the basis of the unique capabilities as well as limitations of each in situ or operando technique, we established an "in situ probing map" for the corresponding in situ technologies in liquid-solid interfaces and offer guidelines for the successful development of next-generation efficient catalysts.

Abstract:Recently, the electrocatalysis has attracted increasing attention for the sustainable development of society, which has been applied for energy harvesting/storage and pollution control. Therefore, various electrocatalysts have emerged over the past two decades to improve the efficiency and reduce the cost for commercialization. However, a deep understanding of dynamical processes in the electrochemical reactions remains deficient, leading to the waste of effort in the design of electrocatalysts. As the reaction occurs on the surface of electrocatalyst, surface-sensitive technologies are essential to give an in-situ characterization for the dynamical process and guidance on the design of novel catalysts. Fortunately, in-situ/operando Raman technique can provide molecular-level fingerprint information on the surface of material, intermediates, and solvents under working conditions. This review elaborately summarizes recent advances of in-situ/operando Raman studies in probing different electrocatalytic systems. We systematically discuss the development, advantages, and configurations now available for applying these Raman techniques firstly. Then, the focus moves to their applications in five types of electrocatalytic reactions to gain a comprehensive understanding on the mechanisms. Finally, the challenges and perspectives on the future developments of in-situ/operando Raman techniques for electrocatalysis are presented.

Abstract:In-depth understanding of the real-time behaviors of active sites during electrocatalysis is essential for the advancement of sustainable energy conversion. Recently, the concept of dynamic active sites has been recognized as a potent approach for creating self-adaptive electrocatalysts that can address a variety of electrocatalytic reactions, outperforming traditional electrocatalysts with static active sites. Nonetheless, the comprehension of the underlying principles that guide the engineering of dynamic active sites is presently insufficient. In this review, we systematically analyze the fundamentals of dynamic active sites for electrocatalysis and consider important future directions for this emerging field. We reveal that dynamic behaviors and reversibility are two crucial factors that influence electrocatalytic performance. By reviewing recent advances in dynamic active sites, we conclude that implementing dynamic electrocatalysis through variable reaction environments, correlating the model of dynamic evolution with catalytic properties, and developing localized and ultrafast in-situ/operando techniques are keys to designing high-performance dynamic electrocatalysts. This review paves the way to the development of the next-generation electrocatalyst and the universal theory for both dynamic and static active sites.

Abstract:<p>Highly efficient electrocatalysts play an integral part in developing renewable energy conversion and storage technologies. Despite considerable efforts devoted to synthesizing electrocatalysts with superior performance, the identification of active moieties and understanding of reaction mechanisms under practical conditions still remain elusive. Herein, the substantial progresses in unraveling the local electronic and atomic structure optimizations of nanocatalysts for gas‐involved electrocatalysis, disclosing real active sites, and clarifying their relationships with intrinsic activities by combining advanced characterization techniques with computational simulations are summarized. The continuous development of in situ and ex situ characterization tools, particularly at multi‐scale resolution, to monitor or even directly observe the active center structure is systematically discussed, which is divided into four main categories based on the type of active sites: atomically dispersed active sites, vacancies, heteroatom doping sites, and edge sites. Current challenges and perspectives in both fundamental area and industrial application are finally proposed for the future research direction of next‐generation electrode materials. The aim of this review is to provide mechanistic insights into the real catalytically active structure with the assistance of newly developed characterization techniques, guiding the rational design and structure engineering of advanced functional materials with outstanding activity, selectivity, and durability.</p>

Abstract:Taking 50 years of effort, ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS) has become a useful characterization tool for studies in heterogeneous catalysis and electrocatalysis. This achievement is realized not by mere improvement of instrumentation but through interactions between the desire to explore new scientific phenomena and the advancement of new techniques. Here we review a brief history of APXPS development and its applications in catalysis and electrocatalysis. With the selected recent case stories, we would like to illustrate the intertwining between "tool driven" and "science driven" breakthroughs. Looking forward from here, we also discuss new demands and current frontiers of APXPS investigations. It is a dynamic environment that we need for understanding real behavior of catalyst under varying conditions and of electrocatalysts with on-demand energy. Therefore, a precise control of reaction condition and efficient detection with improved spatial and temporal resolution are essential. Finally, designing reactors that are customized or dedicated for a given study is among future development of the field.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic conversion of carbon dioxide to valuable chemicals and fuels driven by renewable energy plays a crucial role in achieving net-zero carbon emissions. Understanding the structure-activity relationship and the reaction mechanism is significant for tuning electrocatalyst selectivity. Therefore, characterizing catalyst dynamic evolution and reaction intermediates under reaction conditions is necessary but still challenging. We first summarize the most recent progress in mechanistic understanding of heterogeneous CO2/CO reduction using in situ/operando techniques, including surface-enhanced vibrational spectroscopies, X-ray- and electron-based techniques, and mass spectroscopy, along with discussing remaining limitations. We then offer insights and perspectives to accelerate the future development of in situ/operando techniques.

Abstract:The electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide into organic fuels and feedstocks is a fascinating method to implement the sustainable carbon cycle. Thus, a rational design of advanced electrocatalysts and a deep understanding of reaction mechanisms are crucial for the complex reactions of carbon dioxide reduction with multiple electron transfer. In situ and operando techniques with real-time monitoring are important to obtain deep insight into the electrocatalytic reaction to reveal the dynamic evolution of electrocatalysts' structure and composition under experimental conditions. In this paper, the reaction pathways for the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) in the generation of various products (e.g., C1 and C2) via the proposed mechanisms are introduced. Moreover, recent advances in the development and applications of in situ and operando characterization techniques, from the basic working principles and in situ cell structure to detailed applications are discussed. Suggestions and future directions of in situ/operando analysis are also addressed.

Abstract:Electrocatalysis has been the cornerstone for enhancing energy efficiency, minimizing environmental impacts and carbon emissions, and enabling a more sustainable way of meeting global energy needs. Elucidating the structure and reaction mechanisms of electrocatalysts at electrode–electrolyte interfaces is fundamental for advancing renewable energy technologies, including fuel cells, water electrolyzers, CO2 reduction, and batteries, among others. One of the fundamental challenges in electrocatalysis is understanding how to activate and sustain electrocatalytic activity, under operating conditions, for extended time periods and with optimal activity and selectivity. Although traditional ex situ methods have provided a baseline understanding of heterogeneous (electro)catalysts, they cannot provide real-time interfacial structural and compositional changes under reaction conditions, which calls for the use of in situ/operando methods. Herein, we provide a selective review of in situ and operando characterizations, in particular, the use of operando synchrotron-based X-ray techniques and in situ atomic-scale scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) in liquid/gas phases to advance our understanding of electrode–electrolyte interfaces at macro- and microscopic levels, which dictate the charge transfer kinetics and overall reaction mechanisms. The use of scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) enables direct probing of the local activity of electrocatalysts at the nanometer scale. In addition, differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) and the electrochemical quartz crystal balance (EQCM) enable the simultaneous identification of multiple reaction intermediates and products for mechanistic studies of electrocatalyst selectivity and durability. We anticipate that continuous advances of in situ/operando techniques and probes will continue to make significant contributions to establishing structure/composition-reactivity correlations of electrocatalysts at unprecedented atomic-scale and molecular levels under realistic, real-time reaction conditions.

Here, the nucleation, growth, attachment, diffusion, corrosion and other nanoscale dynamics related to the formation of zero-dimensional (0D), one-dimensional (1D), and two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials are discussed. The current challenges and potential opportunities for in situ techniques towards observation of electrocatalyst formation including high resolution, fast imaging and beam effect are also described.

Abstract:Catalysts can effectively accelerate the reaction kinetics process and are recognized as the core to realize the conversion and supply of carbon-free energy. However, the active sites of catalysts, especially nanocatalysts, usually undergo dynamic structural evolution under realistic working conditions, which may be induced by various reaction effects such as the applied voltages, electrolytes, or adsorbed intermediates. Therefore, in-depth and systemic insights into the nature of the active sites involved under the working conditions are prerequisites for correlating structure-performance relationships. However, uncovering and identifying active sites under operation conditions are still formidable scientific and technical challenges, which are severely hindered by the complex physical and chemical processes occurring on the active sites. Meanwhile, complementary and important information could be missed by conducting only the conventionally employed ex situ microscopic and spectroscopic measurements. Accordingly, it is highly desirable for us to develop the ever-increasing in situ synchrotron-based techniques to identify the nature of active sites, which renders the rational design of functional catalysts achievable.In this Account, we elaborately highlight the substantial achievements in cutting-edge in situ X-ray spectroscopy (XAS) techniques by presenting several representative carbon-neutral electrocatalytic examples performed in our group to broadcast the principles and virtues of identifying the active sites and tracing intermediate species during electrocatalytic water splitting and electrocatalytic CO2 reduction (ECR). Specifically, we believe that the interactions between the active sites and the support as well as the adsorption behaviors of intermediates are considered to be the important factors that govern the performance in the water splitting reaction. Meanwhile, the structural rearrangement of alloy catalysts driven by the cathodic potential significantly governs the activity and selectivity toward ECR. More importantly, the directions and suggestions for addressing the current limitations and pitfalls that we may encounter in the course of executing in situ experiments are also provided. Accordingly, it is necessary to use multiple in situ synchrotron-based techniques to obtain the comprehensive details. Furthermore, bridging the gap between the real energy devices and half-reactions could help us to approach the realistic mechanism. Beyond that, developing the rapid time resolution of in situ XAS will overcome the challenge of timescale mismatch to capture the faster structural kinetics of catalysts. Therefore, this Account is aimed to increase the awareness and appreciation of conducting in situ investigations on energy conversion reactions, which would be a guideline for us to explore catalytic scopes that remain challenging.
